On a Windows 11 PC, the quickest supported check is in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Under Device settings, look for Use LE Audio when available. If the switch appears, Windows currently recognizes the computer as LE Audio-capable; turn it on to use the feature. If the switch is missing, Microsoft says the computer does not currently support LE Audio, although a manufacturer driver update may change that on some models.

This check applies to Windows 11, not every operating system. Your headphones or earbuds must also explicitly support Bluetooth LE Audio (or identify support for the TMAP profile), and the PC needs the right Windows version, Bluetooth radio, audio codec, and manufacturer drivers. A generic Bluetooth or Bluetooth LE label is not enough.

How do I check whether my Windows 11 computer supports Bluetooth LE Audio?

Use the Bluetooth device settings page on the actual computer you intend to use. The presence or absence of one Microsoft-documented switch is the practical user-facing test.

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Choose Bluetooth & devices in the left navigation.
  3. Select Devices.
  4. Scroll to Device settings.
  5. Find Use LE Audio when available. If it is present, switch it on.

After enabling the setting, pair a compatible headset or earbuds through the normal Bluetooth controls. The switch indicates that Windows has the necessary support available at that time; it does not turn a non-compliant headset into an LE Audio device.

What does each result mean?

  • Switch is present: The Windows 11 installation currently exposes LE Audio support. Enable it, then verify that the audio accessory also lists LE Audio or TMAP support.
  • Switch is absent: Microsoft’s guidance is that the Windows device does not currently support LE Audio. Hardware limitations, an unsupported audio subsystem, or missing or incompatible drivers can cause this result.
  • Switch appeared after an update: Recheck the setting after restarting. Manufacturer-provided Bluetooth and audio drivers can change the support status on some computers.

Do not infer support from a Bluetooth icon, a product page that says only “Bluetooth LE,” or a Bluetooth version number. Those labels describe pieces of the system, not the complete LE Audio implementation.

What Windows 11 requirements must be present?

Microsoft’s requirements span the operating system, two hardware functions, and their drivers. All of them matter because LE Audio is a coordinated audio stack rather than a radio-only feature.

Requirement What to verify Why it matters
Windows edition and release Windows 11, version 22H2 or newer Microsoft identifies this as the supported Windows baseline.
Bluetooth hardware Compatible Bluetooth Low Energy radio The radio must support the Bluetooth LE functions used by LE Audio.
Audio hardware A compatible audio codec in the PC LE Audio needs an audio path that can process the supported codec.
Manufacturer software LE Audio-capable drivers for both the Bluetooth LE radio and the audio codec Generic or incomplete drivers may leave the feature unavailable even when the hardware is capable.
Remote audio device Headset or earbuds that explicitly support Bluetooth LE Audio or declare TMAP support LE Audio requires compatible support on both the Windows device and the accessory.

Windows 10 does not support LE Audio, and Microsoft also lists Windows 11 version 21H2 as unsupported. Installing an LE Audio headset on either of those operating-system versions cannot satisfy the PC-side requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The version requirement is a floor, not a guarantee. A computer running a newer Windows 11 release can still lack the feature if its radio, codec, firmware, or drivers do not expose the required capabilities.

What each requirement rules in or out

The operating-system check eliminates unsupported Windows releases, but it does not certify a particular computer model. Windows 11 can run on many systems with very different Bluetooth controllers and audio designs. Two laptops on the same Windows release may therefore show different results.

The radio and codec are separate checks. The Bluetooth controller handles wireless transport, while the audio subsystem must provide a compatible path for the codec. Microsoft specifically calls for manufacturer drivers for both, so installing only a Bluetooth package may leave the LE Audio switch unavailable.

Firmware and host software also matter. Bluetooth SIG documentation describes a Bluetooth implementation as a combination of controller hardware and host software. The complete feature is exposed only when those layers, the audio codec, and their drivers work together.

Is Bluetooth LE the same thing as Bluetooth LE Audio?

No. Bluetooth LE is the low-energy transport and radio foundation; LE Audio adds the audio specifications and software layers needed to carry, manage, and discover audio streams.

The Bluetooth SIG describes a Bluetooth implementation as a combination of host software and a hardware controller. A computer can therefore have a Bluetooth LE-capable controller while lacking the host, codec integration, or drivers needed for LE Audio. Checking only the radio label cannot establish end-to-end audio support.

Which LE Audio components explain the difference?

  • LE isochronous channels: Bluetooth LE transport mechanisms designed for timed audio data.
  • LC3 codec: The Low Complexity Communication Codec specified for LE Audio audio streams.
  • Generic Audio Framework: Profiles and services that handle stream management, capability discovery, and related coordination.

These layers must work together on the computer and the accessory. That is why Microsoft exposes a complete support check in Windows Settings instead of asking users to decode a Bluetooth version number.

The Bluetooth Core Specification 6.1, dated April 29, 2025, is a specification release, not a promise that every device using that number supports LE Audio. Product makers can implement different subsets, and Windows still needs the appropriate host integration and drivers. Treat a core-version reference as background information, not as the result of the Windows compatibility test.

How do I verify that my headset or earbuds support LE Audio?

Check the exact model’s technical specification, user manual, or support page. Look for the words Bluetooth LE Audio or a declared TMAP profile; a specification that says only “Bluetooth LE” is insufficient.

  1. Write down the precise model and revision of the headset or earbuds.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s specification for that model, not a generic family page.
  3. Search the connectivity or audio section for “LE Audio,” “Bluetooth Low Energy Audio,” or “TMAP.”
  4. Confirm that the claim applies to the operating mode you plan to use, since a product can support ordinary Bluetooth features without supporting LE Audio.
  5. Pair it only after the PC-side Windows setting is available and enabled.

Microsoft states that LE Audio must be supported on both the Windows device and the headset or earbuds. Buying an accessory with an LE Audio radio does not add the required PC drivers or audio codec, and a supported PC cannot provide LE Audio to an accessory that lacks it.

What does a TMAP declaration tell me?

TMAP is a profile designation used in the LE Audio ecosystem. A manufacturer’s explicit TMAP declaration is useful evidence that the model was designed for the relevant coordinated audio profiles; treat it as a model-specific specification to verify rather than assuming every product in a series has identical support.

How should I record the accessory evidence?

Save the specification page or manual section that names LE Audio or TMAP, along with the exact model number. Product families often contain revisions, regional variants, or separate charging-case bundles. Recording the model prevents a support representative or retailer from checking a different version with different capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the listing uses only broad phrases such as “Bluetooth wireless,” “Bluetooth 5,” or “Bluetooth LE,” ask the manufacturer whether the precise model supports LE Audio. Do not treat a retailer’s abbreviated connectivity list as a substitute for the maker’s technical specification.

Why is “Use LE Audio when available” missing?

An absent switch means the computer does not currently expose LE Audio support to Windows. Work through the checks below in order, because the cause may be software even when the underlying hardware is capable.

1. Confirm the Windows release

Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows specifications. The supported baseline is Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer. If the PC is on Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 21H2, Microsoft’s guidance is that LE Audio is not supported.

2. Install available Windows updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update, install applicable updates, restart, and return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. An operating-system update alone is not a universal upgrade path, but it ensures that the computer is running the current Windows components before you investigate the manufacturer software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the computer maker’s support page

Search by the exact computer model or service identifier. Look specifically for updates to the Bluetooth radio driver and the audio subsystem or codec driver. Microsoft’s requirement is manufacturer-provided LE Audio-capable drivers for both components, so updating only Bluetooth may not be enough.

4. Restart and check again

Driver installers can leave the old capability state in memory until Windows restarts. After restarting, repeat the exact Settings path and look under Device settings rather than relying on the Bluetooth quick-settings panel.

5. Ask the manufacturer about model-specific support

If the switch remains absent, provide the model identifier, Windows version, and the names of the installed Bluetooth and audio drivers. The manufacturer can determine whether the limitation is a missing driver, unsupported radio or codec hardware, or a model-specific design decision. Microsoft notes that some devices that currently lack support may gain it through a future manufacturer driver update, but no universal upgrade is promised.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?

  • Do not repeatedly pair and unpair the headset as a substitute for checking host support. Pairing cannot add a missing Windows capability.
  • Do not install a driver intended for a different model or radio. Use the computer maker’s package for the exact model or service identifier.
  • Do not stop after finding a Bluetooth update. The audio codec driver is a separate part of Microsoft’s stated requirement.
  • Do not assume that a switch appearing on one user account or one computer proves that every configuration in the product family supports LE Audio.

What does the Windows switch prove—and what does it not prove?

An available switch is strong evidence that the current Windows installation, radio, audio subsystem, and drivers expose LE Audio capability. It is the user-facing check Microsoft documents for Windows 11, so it is more useful than a Bluetooth version number or a generic product label.

It does not certify the remote accessory. You still need the headset or earbuds to list LE Audio or TMAP. It also does not guarantee that every future driver, firmware combination, or product revision will behave identically. The setting reports the computer’s current exposed capability, not a lifetime promise.

Conversely, a missing switch means “not currently supported,” not necessarily “physically impossible forever.” Microsoft says some devices may gain support through manufacturer driver updates. Until such a driver is released and the setting appears, however, treat the PC as unsupported for a purchase or deployment decision.

How should I compare computers and audio devices before buying?

Compare explicit LE Audio capability at both ends of the connection. Use the following checks instead of treating “Bluetooth 5,” “Bluetooth LE,” or a generic wireless-audio claim as a guarantee.

Comparison point Question to ask Evidence that is useful
PC operating system Is it Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer? The installed Windows version shown in Settings.
PC support status Does Windows show Use LE Audio when available? The switch under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Device settings.
Bluetooth radio Is the radio supported by an LE Audio-capable manufacturer driver? The computer maker’s driver package and model support documentation.
Audio subsystem Does the audio codec have the required manufacturer driver? The maker’s audio or codec driver information for that exact model.
Headset or earbuds Does the exact model list LE Audio or TMAP? The accessory’s own technical specification or manual.

When a specification is vague, ask the manufacturer whether the exact model supports LE Audio with the operating system and driver package you intend to use. Do not substitute a generic Bluetooth headset for a model with an explicit LE Audio declaration when LE Audio is the requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical comparison worksheet

  1. Record each computer’s exact model and Windows release.
  2. Open the documented Settings path on each machine and note whether the switch is present.
  3. List the Bluetooth and audio driver package versions supplied by the computer maker.
  4. Record the exact headset or earbud model, revision, and the page that names LE Audio or TMAP.
  5. Mark a system compatible only when both the PC-side switch and accessory declaration are present.

This method prevents a common buying error: selecting a computer because its advertisement mentions a recent Bluetooth version, then discovering that the model’s audio codec or driver package does not expose LE Audio.

Can I use the same check on macOS or Linux?

No equivalent click-by-click procedure is established here for macOS or Linux. The Use LE Audio when available switch is a Windows 11 control documented by Microsoft; its absence or presence should not be generalized to other operating systems.

For another platform, consult that operating system’s current documentation and the computer manufacturer’s model-specific support information. Check the accessory specification separately, because the two-device requirement remains relevant even when the host operating system uses a different interface.

What are the most common compatibility mistakes?

  • Confusing Bluetooth LE with LE Audio: A low-energy radio does not prove that the audio profiles, codec integration, and host software are present.
  • Checking only the headset: The PC must also pass its Windows support check and have the required drivers.
  • Checking only the PC: A visible Windows switch does not grant LE Audio capability to an accessory that does not list it.
  • Using an old Windows release: Windows 10 and Windows 11 version 21H2 are outside Microsoft’s stated support boundary.
  • Updating one driver: Microsoft calls for LE Audio-capable drivers for both the Bluetooth LE radio and the audio codec.
  • Assuming a Bluetooth version number settles the question: Version numbers do not reveal whether the complete LE Audio host and controller layers are implemented.
  • Relying on a family name: Revisions and regional configurations can differ, so verify the exact computer and accessory model.
  • Assuming an operating-system update guarantees support: The manufacturer’s radio and audio drivers remain part of the requirement.
  • Using the quick-settings panel as proof: Microsoft’s documented check is the Device settings page, not merely the Bluetooth icon or pairing screen.

What is the final decision process?

Use this short sequence whenever you need a defensible answer about a computer’s support:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the computer runs Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  3. Look under Device settings for Use LE Audio when available.
  4. If it appears, enable it and verify the exact headset or earbuds specification for LE Audio or TMAP.
  5. If it does not appear, install Windows and manufacturer Bluetooth and audio updates, restart, and check again.
  6. If the switch is still absent, treat the computer as not currently supporting LE Audio and ask the manufacturer whether a compatible driver or hardware limitation explains the result.

This approach separates what Windows can verify from what only the accessory specification can establish. It also avoids the most common false positive: seeing Bluetooth LE hardware and assuming that the complete LE Audio stack is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Windows update by itself add Bluetooth LE Audio support?

Not necessarily. Microsoft identifies manufacturer-provided drivers for both the Bluetooth LE radio and the audio codec as part of the requirement, so a future computer-maker driver may be needed even after Windows is fully updated.

Does a TMAP label guarantee that every feature of my earbuds will work on Windows?

No single label replaces checking the exact model and the PC together. TMAP is a useful declared profile indicator, but Windows must also expose its LE Audio setting and have compatible radio, codec, and drivers.

What information should I include when contacting my computer manufacturer?

Give the exact model or service identifier, Windows 11 version, whether the LE Audio switch appears, and the installed Bluetooth and audio driver names or versions. That lets support distinguish an outdated driver from a hardware limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two computers with similar Bluetooth specifications have different LE Audio support?

The Bluetooth controller is only one part of the implementation. Differences in the audio codec, host software integration, firmware, and manufacturer driver packages can make the complete LE Audio capability available on one model but absent on another.

Is Bluetooth 5 or Bluetooth 5.3 enough to prove LE Audio support?

No. A Bluetooth version number does not establish that the computer has the required LE Audio host software, LC3 codec integration, profiles, or manufacturer drivers. Use the Windows setting and the exact accessory specification instead.

What if my computer has Bluetooth LE but the setting is missing?

Treat it as not currently supporting LE Audio. Bluetooth LE identifies the radio capability, while LE Audio also needs compatible host software, audio hardware, and drivers. Check Windows and manufacturer updates, then ask the maker about the exact model.

Can I use an LE Audio headset with a computer that lacks the Windows switch?

The headset alone cannot satisfy the PC-side requirement. Microsoft says LE Audio must be supported on both the Windows device and the headset or earbuds; without the switch, the computer does not currently expose that support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the switch guarantee that every LE Audio headset will work?

No. The switch indicates current PC-side support. The accessory still needs an explicit LE Audio or TMAP declaration, and compatibility can vary by exact model and revision.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and look under Device settings for Use LE Audio when available. If it is missing after Windows and manufacturer Bluetooth and audio driver updates, treat the computer as not currently compatible. Then verify that your exact headset or earbuds model explicitly lists Bluetooth LE Audio or TMAP.
