Bluehost can run a live Node.js application on its Self-Managed VPS or Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) offerings, but its managed shared Web Hosting is not intended for custom server-side Node.js configuration. If you only need to publish files generated by a Node-based build tool, shared hosting may be sufficient because the Node process runs during development or deployment, not on the production server. An API, SSR application, WebSocket service, worker, or other long-running process needs a plan where you control the runtime and server. Bluehost’s current guidance, updated October 15, 2026, points those workloads toward VPS or VDS rather than shared hosting.

What does “Node.js hosting” actually mean?

The phrase covers two different deployment models. Your choice becomes much clearer once you identify which one you have.

Static files built with Node.js

Frameworks and tools can use Node.js to compile a project into HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and other assets. After that build completes, a web server only needs to deliver those files. The production host does not need to keep Node.js running, expose an application port, or support background processes. A static marketing site, documentation site, or single-page application that is uploaded as compiled files can therefore fit an ordinary shared environment, subject to that plan’s storage, bandwidth, and deployment features.

A live server-side Node.js process

An application that handles requests with Express, performs server-side rendering, maintains sessions, runs scheduled workers, consumes queues, or holds WebSocket connections needs a Node runtime on the server. It also needs a way to keep the process alive, restart it after failure, expose the correct port, install dependencies, and often configure a reverse proxy and TLS. Those requirements are what Bluehost’s shared product guidance distinguishes from a simple static upload.

  • Hybrid application: a static frontend may be easy to host while its API, SSR layer, or workers require a separate runtime-capable server.

Does Bluehost shared hosting support Node.js applications?

Bluehost describes its Web Hosting as a managed shared environment and says it is better suited to workloads that do not require custom Node.js server configuration. Its October 15, 2026 guidance does not position shared Web Hosting as the place to configure a custom server-side Node process. Read the provider’s explanation at Can You Use Node.js on Shared Hosting? and its overview of the product at What is Shared Hosting at Bluehost.

This is a product-specific qualification, not a claim that no shared host anywhere can run Node.js. Some shared providers expose a managed Node selector or a tightly constrained application feature. The cited Bluehost material does not establish such a selector for its Web Hosting plans, so you should not assume that a cPanel option, a particular framework, or a requested Node version will be available.

Signals that shared hosting is a poor fit

  • A process must remain running after you close an SSH session.
  • You need root access, custom system packages, native build tools, or a nonstandard service configuration.
  • Your application uses background workers, queues, cron-driven jobs, or multiple cooperating services.
  • You require WebSockets, a custom listening port, or long-lived connections.
  • Traffic is sustained or bursty enough that CPU, memory, process, or concurrency limits could terminate or throttle the application.
  • You need to choose how processes restart, how logs are collected, or how a reverse proxy routes traffic.

These are workload signals, not guaranteed limits for every shared configuration. Confirm the exact plan’s resource and process policies before treating any shared environment as suitable.

Which Bluehost products are intended for a live Node.js server?

Bluehost documents two self-managed paths: Self-Managed VPS and VDS. Both give you substantially more control than managed shared hosting, and both transfer more setup, patching, security, and monitoring responsibility to you.

Self-Managed VPS

Bluehost says a Self-Managed VPS provides root and SSH access so you can configure Node.js, frameworks, and other server software. Its setup documentation includes an OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js application option; you can select that option while purchasing a VPS. The instructions are at Purchase a Self-Managed VPS with OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js Installation.

With this model, you decide how the runtime is installed and maintained, how applications bind to ports, and which process manager or proxy you use. Bluehost mentions PM2 together with Nginx or OpenLiteSpeed as possible tools, but the provider’s page does not promise a particular Node.js version, framework, dependency, or performance level. Verify those details for the plan and operating-system image you intend to use.

Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS)

Bluehost presents VDS as an option for workloads that need dedicated, isolated compute. Its documentation allows you to select OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js during purchase or install that stack later. See Purchase a Virtual Dedicated Server with OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js Installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Dedicated” in this context describes the provider’s resource-isolation positioning; it is not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of faster application code. Your result still depends on the selected CPU and memory allocation, your database and storage design, concurrency, and how well the application is operated.

How do shared hosting, VPS, and VDS compare for Node.js?

The practical distinction is control versus operational responsibility. The table uses only distinctions Bluehost states or that follow directly from its product descriptions; check the plan page for configuration-specific details.

Choose shared Web Hosting only for a static deployment

Shared hosting can be reasonable when your build pipeline produces static files and no Node process is needed at runtime. Build locally or in continuous integration, upload the output directory, and configure the web root and redirects. Keep API calls pointed at a separately hosted service if the frontend is not self-contained. Confirm storage, bandwidth, SSL, deployment access, and rewrite-rule support for the exact shared plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a Self-Managed VPS when control is the deciding factor

A VPS is the practical starting point when you need root and SSH access, custom packages, a particular reverse-proxy arrangement, PM2 or another process manager, scheduled workers, or several services on one machine. It also suits teams comfortable with Linux updates, firewall rules, secrets management, log rotation, backups, and incident response. A VPS does not remove resource limits; size the instance for peak memory, CPU, connection count, and build activity.

Consider VDS when isolation matters

VDS is worth evaluating when noisy-neighbor risk and dedicated compute are more important than the simplest operating model. This can matter for sustained traffic, latency-sensitive services, or workloads that run multiple cooperating processes. Compare the actual allocated resources and support terms rather than assuming that the VDS label alone guarantees a particular response time.

Separate frontend and backend when that reduces risk

A static frontend can remain on a simple web host while an API, SSR service, worker, or WebSocket gateway runs on a VPS or VDS. This split limits the blast radius of backend changes and lets you scale the runtime separately. It also introduces cross-origin, authentication, deployment, and monitoring work, so document those boundaries before production.

How do you set up Node.js on Bluehost VPS or VDS?

The exact screens and operating-system images can change, but Bluehost’s documented flow gives you a reliable high-level sequence.

  1. Define the runtime workload. List the services, expected concurrent connections, background jobs, database needs, WebSocket requirements, and peak memory use. Decide whether the frontend is static or server-rendered.
  2. Select a self-managed product. Use Self-Managed VPS when root/SSH control is sufficient; evaluate VDS when dedicated, isolated compute is a priority. Review the current CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, billing, renewal, and support details at checkout.
  3. Choose the Node-enabled image where offered. Bluehost documents an OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js option during VPS setup and at VDS purchase. For VDS, Bluehost also documents installing the option after purchase.
  4. Connect over SSH and verify the environment. Check the installed Node.js and package-manager versions, operating-system updates, available memory and disk, hostname, firewall, and DNS plan. The cited guidance does not specify a universal Node version, so confirm it on the selected image.
  5. Deploy the application. Transfer source or a build artifact, install production dependencies, configure environment variables outside the repository, and run the application under a non-root service account where practical.
  6. Keep the process alive. Configure a process manager such as PM2, which Bluehost names as a possible tool, or an equivalent service supervisor. Set restart behavior, startup-on-boot, log handling, and health checks.
  7. Put the web server in front. Configure OpenLiteSpeed or Nginx as the reverse proxy, map the public hostname to the internal application port, and enable TLS. Do not expose an internal service port directly unless your security design requires it.
  8. Test failure and recovery. Reboot the server, stop the process, exhaust a test connection limit, rotate logs, and verify that monitoring and alerts detect the failure before launch.

What responsibilities do you take on with a self-managed plan?

Moving from shared hosting to VPS or VDS changes who operates the stack. You should plan for:

  • Applying operating-system, Node.js, OpenLiteSpeed or Nginx, and dependency security updates.
  • Restricting SSH access, using keys and least-privilege accounts, and storing secrets safely.
  • Configuring firewalls, TLS certificates, DNS, backups, and restore tests.
  • Watching CPU, memory, disk, process count, request latency, error rate, and restart loops.
  • Maintaining a rollback strategy for application and dependency releases.
  • Checking license, support, and escalation boundaries when a problem involves your code rather than the underlying server.

If you do not have time or expertise for these tasks, the extra control of a self-managed product may be a liability. A managed platform that explicitly supports your Node workload can reduce operations work, even if its pricing or architecture differs.

What should you verify before paying?

Bluehost’s cited pages do not provide a complete, comparable current price and renewal table for every VPS and VDS configuration. Treat any advertised introductory amount as incomplete until you see the recurring billing term in checkout.

  • Runtime: Is the required Node.js major version available, and can you change it later?
  • Resources: What CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth, process, and connection allocations apply to the selected plan?
  • Networking: Are the ports, WebSockets, IPv4/IPv6 behavior, DNS controls, and TLS workflow compatible with your app?
  • Operations: Is the product self-managed, and what does support actually troubleshoot?
  • Lifecycle: What are the renewal price, billing interval, backup policy, migration process, and cancellation terms?
  • Compatibility: Has your team tested the framework, native modules, database drivers, and build tools on the chosen image?

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?

The site shows a static page but API requests fail

This usually means the frontend deployed successfully while its server-side API was never running or is pointed at the wrong hostname. Check the process supervisor, application logs, reverse-proxy upstream, DNS record, environment variables, and firewall before changing the frontend build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The process stops after you disconnect

A shell-launched process is not a production process manager. Run the service under a supervisor configured to start at boot and restart on failure, then test that behavior after a reboot.

Native dependencies fail during installation

Verify operating-system packages, compiler tools, Node.js version, architecture, and the lockfile. If the shared plan does not permit the required packages, move the service to a self-managed environment rather than trying to work around an administrative restriction.

Memory or CPU usage spikes

Capture process-level metrics and identify whether the cause is a build, worker, leak, connection surge, or database call. Reduce concurrency or worker count temporarily, then resize or redesign based on measured peak usage; VDS isolation alone does not diagnose an application bottleneck.

So, is Bluehost Node.js hosting right for you in 2026?

It is a reasonable fit when you are prepared to operate a self-managed VPS or VDS and your application needs a real Node.js runtime, persistent processes, custom packages, or long-lived connections. It is not the right fit to assume that managed shared Web Hosting will provide a customizable Node server. For a static build, shared hosting may be adequate; for a live service, select the plan whose documented access, resources, isolation, and support match your workload, then verify runtime details and recurring costs before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I host a React, Vue, or Angular site on Bluehost without running Node.js there?

Yes, if your deployment is the framework’s production build output rather than a server-rendered application. Generate the files in local development or continuous integration, upload them to the web root, and confirm that client-side routes are rewritten to the entry HTML file.

Does Bluehost specify which Node.js versions its VPS images include?

The cited setup pages document an OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js option but do not establish one universal Node.js version for every configuration. Check the selected image and verify the installed version over SSH before deploying dependencies that require a particular major release.

Is a VDS automatically faster than a VPS for Node.js?

No. Bluehost positions VDS around dedicated, isolated compute, but the supplied guidance contains no independent benchmark or universal performance guarantee. Compare allocated CPU, memory, storage, concurrency, and your application’s measured workload instead of relying on the product name.

Who handles security updates on a Self-Managed VPS?

You do. A self-managed plan means planning operating-system and runtime patches, firewall and SSH controls, dependency updates, backups, monitoring, and recovery tests; confirm with Bluehost which underlying infrastructure issues its support team covers.
