Blockchain analytics tools help investigators trace transaction flows, group addresses, and connect activity to provider-maintained records about known entities and services. They can reveal leads and support casework, but a ledger trace alone generally does not identify a wallet’s real-world owner or guarantee that funds can be recovered. Chainalysis, Elliptic, and TRM Labs describe different capabilities in their official materials; the available evidence supports comparing them against your agency’s needs, not naming an overall winner.
What blockchain analytics tools do
Blockchains record transactions publicly, but their addresses are generally pseudonymous. Analytics services organize ledger history and add investigative features. The OSCE’s 2026 Following the Money guide describes common functions such as clustering addresses believed to be controlled by the same entity, aggregating and visualizing fund flows, maintaining databases of clusters associated with known entities, and incorporating online or darknet intelligence related to wallet addresses.
An investigator can use a deposit address or other known address as a starting point to examine transaction history, counterparties, and potential exposure to services or entities. The results can help develop leads, support suspicious-activity reporting and casework, and prepare evidence or requests related to freezing or reissuing centralized stablecoins. The OSCE says blockchain forensic tools play a crucial role in enabling law enforcement to investigate illicit virtual-asset activity, arrest criminals, and seize illicit funds.

These functions are analytical aids, not identity proof. The ledger may show where assets moved, while the identity behind an address remains unknown. Investigators may need to identify a linked virtual asset service provider (VASP), then use appropriate legal process to obtain account or customer information. Identification, freezing, and recovery can therefore depend on evidence and cooperation beyond the analytics platform.

Where tracing can become difficult
Most virtual assets are traceable using public data, according to the OSCE guide, but that does not mean every route can be resolved. The guide identifies privacy coins as an exception and notes that tracing can be difficult through VASPs and other services, smart contracts, and apps that mix, trade, or convert assets. Cross-chain activity adds another practical constraint: a tool’s usefulness depends on whether it supports the relevant networks, assets, bridges, and activity.
Coverage figures and labels such as “cross-chain” should be treated as claims to test against actual case paths. Ask where the platform can follow a transaction, where an attribution is inferred rather than directly established, and where investigators must turn to a service provider or other external source. A graph can organize a chain of activity without establishing who controlled every address in it.

How the major providers describe their tools
The table summarizes claims in reviewed official provider materials and the OSCE’s provider list. It is not a performance ranking: these sources do not provide a consistent independent comparison or head-to-head accuracy test.
| Provider | What its reviewed material says | Questions to put to the provider |
|---|---|---|
| Chainalysis | Its law-enforcement page describes Reactor for tracing funds across blockchains, automated cross-chain analytics, training, expert case support, and SaaS, on-premises, or FedRAMP Full Authorization deployment. These are Chainalysis’s descriptions of its offerings. | Which chains and investigative paths are supported for your case types? How are deterministic links distinguished from probabilistic indicators? What audit, export, and deployment controls apply in your jurisdiction? |
| Elliptic | Its government page says its analytics follow activity across 65+ blockchains and 250+ bridge protocols, and describes entity attribution, exportable graphs and transaction data, and modular delivery into government-owned or air-gapped systems. The coverage counts are Elliptic’s vendor-published claims, not independently verified comparative figures. | How does coverage apply to your specific assets and bridge paths? What provenance and uncertainty accompany attributions? What data is included in exports, and how are updates delivered in secure environments? |
| TRM Labs | Its homepage describes TRM Forensics, threat intelligence, case services, training, and the Beacon Network, which TRM says notifies VASPs in real time when law enforcement flags illicit funds. Its homepage also publishes vendor-generated crime statistics and customer counts. | Which functions are available to your organization and jurisdiction? How does participation in the Beacon Network work? How are intelligence outputs explained and documented for a case? |
| Other providers named by the OSCE | The OSCE lists Merkle Science, Bitquery, Blockchain Intelligence Group, and Crystal alongside Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and Elliptic as examples of reputable providers; it does not rank them. | Check current product scope, chain coverage, attribution methods, references, security, and procurement terms directly. The reviewed material does not establish comparable details for these providers. |
Product details can change. For a serious evaluation, ask each vendor to demonstrate representative investigative paths from your workload and explain coverage, attribution confidence, source provenance, update practices, exports, and deployment constraints.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
Figures from vendor material can describe a product claim or a particular survey, but they should not be mistaken for a neutral measure of comparative tool quality.
- Elliptic coverage: Its government-facing page, accessed October 7, 2026, claims coverage of 65+ blockchains and 250+ bridge protocols. This is a vendor-published coverage claim, not an independently verified benchmark.
- TRM customer reach: Its homepage, accessed October 7, 2026, claims 600+ government agencies and financial institutions across 75 countries. This is TRM’s own customer claim.
- Law-enforcement survey: In a 2023 TRM Labs-commissioned survey of more than 300 US and international law-enforcement professionals, over 40% of surveyed cases involved cryptocurrency in 2023; respondents expected that share to reach 51% by 2027. The 2027 figure is an expectation reported by respondents, not a measured outcome, and 93% of respondents were from US organizations.
- Perceived value and collaboration: In that same 2023 survey, 87% of respondents who used blockchain analytics called the tools “very” or “extremely” important to success. Also, 92% identified collaboration with analytics providers and exchanges as key to solving cases, while 64% said they had partnered with blockchain analytics companies. These are survey responses, not independent proof that a given platform improves outcomes.
A 2023 academic paper on Bitcoin analysis describes the Elliptic++ dataset as containing more than 822,000 Bitcoin wallet addresses, 56 features per address, and 1.27 million temporal interactions. Its graph views include transaction-to-transaction flows, address-to-address interactions, address-transaction links, and user-entity clusters. This illustrates graph-analysis methods on a particular Bitcoin dataset; it does not validate any provider’s performance across all networks.

How to evaluate a tool for your cases
Use a structured evaluation rather than relying on a headline coverage number or a polished graph. For each candidate, work through the following checks with representative case material and the legal and security requirements of your organization.
- Map casework to coverage. List the chains, tokens, bridges, services, and transaction types your investigations actually involve. Ask the vendor to demonstrate those paths, including where the tool cannot continue.
- Inspect attribution and uncertainty. Ask how an entity label is sourced, reviewed, updated, and assigned confidence. Request the provenance behind labels and a clear explanation of which connections are deterministic and which are probabilistic indicators.
- Probe difficult routes. Test relevant examples involving bridges, mixers, smart contracts, swaps, and centralized services. Establish what the platform can resolve and when identification or further evidence requires legal process or cooperation from a provider.
- Check case and evidence workflow. Evaluate graph readability, collaboration features, notes, exports, evidence preservation, and whether another analyst can reproduce the steps and understand the basis for a conclusion.
- Confirm deployment and controls. Review available deployment options, access controls, data retention, and security conditions against your organization’s requirements, especially for government or air-gapped environments.
- Assess people and support as well as software. Compare training and case support alongside the platform. The TRM-commissioned 2023 survey suggests respondents considered training, tools, and private-sector coordination relevant; it is not a universal forecast or an independent comparison.
- Request current commercial terms. The reviewed sources do not publish comparable prices. Obtain current pricing and procurement terms directly from each provider.
Why investigators still need partners and process
Analytics can help turn public transaction data into a usable investigative picture, but attribution and action often depend on external information. If a trace points to a VASP, that service may hold identifying records that are not present on-chain. Exchanges, stablecoin issuers, and legal authorities may also matter when an investigation seeks identification, a freeze, or another intervention. A platform can support those steps; it cannot substitute for the required evidence, legal authority, or cooperation.
