There is no universal winner. Choose the network that supports the apps and assets you need, then compare the exact bridge route and its costs, exit process, proof system, sequencer arrangements, and upgrade controls. Blast’s native-yield pitch may matter to some users, Arbitrum offers a distinct platform and developer options, and Optimism and Base use OP Stack technology—but shared software does not make their governance or security configurations identical.

Start with the apps and assets you actually need

Before choosing a network, check that the specific decentralized app is deployed there and that it supports the exact token you plan to use. A token with the same ticker can have different representations on different networks. Check whether it is native to the network, issued through a canonical bridge, or brought over by a third-party bridge, and confirm that the app has usable liquidity for that version.

Availability and liquidity can change. Verify them in the app and bridge you intend to use rather than assuming that a popular app or asset is supported everywhere. If your existing assets are already on one of these networks, include the cost, time, and risks of moving them in the comparison.

How the four networks differ

Network What distinguishes it in the available documentation What to verify before choosing
Blast Blast’s developer page describes it as “an L2 with native yield for ETH and stablecoins” and says it shares gas-fee revenue with developers. These are project claims about product features, not independent guarantees of returns or safety. Check the current deposit and yield arrangements, the risks and terms attached to any return, and the relevant independent risk assessment. Do not treat a quoted or advertised yield as guaranteed or permanent.
Arbitrum Arbitrum’s documentation covers Arbitrum One, Nova, app deployment, bridging, and a platform for dedicated chains. Its Stylus tooling allows Rust and other languages to compile to Wasm alongside EVM development, which may be relevant to builders. Its Nitro documentation describes fees as including an L2 execution component and an Ethereum data component. Confirm which Arbitrum network an app or asset uses; Arbitrum One, Nova, and dedicated chains are not interchangeable. For a transaction, inspect the actual fee rather than relying on a generic claim that Arbitrum is cheap.
Optimism OP Mainnet is a network; the OP Stack is modular technology used to build networks. Optimism’s documentation covers OP Stack architecture, fault proofs, bridges, and interoperability. When evaluating a particular OP Stack network, check that network’s own proof operation, upgrade authority, governance, bridge, and operational arrangements. OP Stack reuse alone does not establish that two networks have the same configuration or risk.
Base Base has used OP Stack technology. Its current configuration should be assessed as Base’s own network, not inferred from Optimism’s. L2BEAT’s 2026 Base page reports milestones and configuration changes, illustrating that its arrangements can evolve. Consult current Base documentation and an independent assessment for its fault-proof, upgrade, and governance details. Base’s bridge guide includes launch-era descriptions that should not be repeated as a statement of its current state.

These distinctions identify what to investigate; they do not establish a universal ranking. In particular, Blast’s yield feature does not by itself make it the best place to hold or use funds, and OP Stack compatibility does not make Base and OP Mainnet equivalent.

Use this decision process before moving funds

  1. Confirm app and token support. Check the app’s network selector and documentation, then verify the token’s network and representation. Confirm that the liquidity and route you need are available now.
  2. Compare the transaction you will actually make. Estimate the relevant app transaction and the full cost of getting funds to the network, including bridge charges. Arbitrum’s documentation distinguishes L2 execution fees from Ethereum data fees; a fee comparison should use a representative transaction and a dated quote, not an old headline figure.
  3. Identify the exact bridge and route. Record the sending and receiving networks, token representation, expected completion, and withdrawal route. Compare security assumptions, convenience and time, connectivity, ability to pass messages or complex data, and cost—not speed alone.
  4. Check how state disputes and exits work. Find out who can propose or challenge state, whether proofs are operating and permissionless, what exit windows apply, and what users can do if a sequencer or proposer stops working.
  5. Review upgrade and governance powers. Check who can change contracts, whether changes are delayed, whether a council or other authority can pause or override them, and what exit options exist if governance acts against users’ interests.
  6. Recheck the facts at the time of use. Fees, bridge routes, proof configurations, and governance arrangements can change. Use the current network and bridge documentation and an independent risk assessment rather than carrying forward a comparison written for an earlier configuration.

Why an Ethereum L2 still has network-specific risks

Ethereum.org explains that optimistic rollups publish transaction batches to Ethereum and use Ethereum contracts for settlement and dispute handling. Publishing data on Ethereum allows others to reconstruct rollup state, but it does not remove every operational or governance risk.

State validation and proof operation

Check whether the system’s dispute or proof mechanism is operating, who is allowed to use it, and what happens if the relevant participants fail to act. A description of a design or a promised future milestone is not, on its own, evidence of the current live configuration.

Sequencers, censorship, and outages

Sequencers and other operators may censor transactions, go offline, or delay users. The practical question is what forced-inclusion or other fallback route exists on that particular network, how to use it, and how long it takes. Do not assume an L2 has the same fallback merely because it shares software with another chain.

Data availability, exits, and upgrades

Ethereum data publication is important because it can let users reconstruct state, but it is only one part of the assessment. Also consider withdrawal paths and their waiting periods, bridge contracts, upgrade authority, pause powers, and the consequences if an upgrade or governance decision is malicious or mistaken.

L2BEAT provides comparisons of technical risk categories, proof configuration, and maturity stages. Its stage framework is not a complete security verdict: a stage label alone does not answer whether a network suits your use case or whether a particular bridge route is safe for you. Its live pages can change, so any stage or metric should be checked and dated when quoted.

Choose a bridge route, not just a destination network

Ethereum.org’s bridge guidance distinguishes native bridges, validator- or oracle-based bridges, generalized message-passing bridges, and liquidity networks. These designs can differ in who or what must be trusted, how messages are handled, and how assets move. A third-party route that is faster or cheaper may make different trust assumptions than another route to the same network.

Which network fits which user?

Consider Blast if its yield feature is central to your use case

Blast’s stated native-yield feature for bridged ETH and stablecoins may be relevant if that is specifically what you are evaluating. Review current terms and independent risk information before depositing; the product description does not establish a guaranteed return, its persistence, or that it is risk-free.

Consider Arbitrum if the apps or tools you need are there

For users, the decisive question is usually whether the required apps, assets, and liquidity are available on the specific Arbitrum network they plan to use. Builders may also care about the platform’s dedicated-chain options or Stylus support for Rust and other Wasm-targeting languages, alongside EVM development. Neither feature substitutes for checking the project’s dependencies and the network’s current costs and operating arrangements.

Consider OP Mainnet or Base based on their own app and risk details

Both may be candidates where the apps and assets you need are available, but compare them as separate networks. OP Stack is shared infrastructure, not proof that OP Mainnet and Base have identical governance, upgrade powers, proof operation, or exits. Check current network-specific documentation and independent assessments for the details relevant to your funds.

For builders, weigh the stack and the operating environment

A network choice affects more than transaction fees. Compare supported development tools, app dependencies, RPC and indexing availability, bridging and interoperability requirements, and chain-specific governance. Arbitrum Stylus or OP Stack compatibility may be important for a particular project, but neither settles the choice without examining the application’s needs and the network’s own configuration.

For products that depend on cross-chain messages or assets, map the full route and its trust assumptions, not just the destination chain. A technically compatible stack does not guarantee the bridges, liquidity, infrastructure, or governance your application requires.
