For most PS5 players, Performance Mode is the best starting point for Nightmare Mode: Ubisoft says it targets 60 FPS, which favors responsive play when parry timing is tighter and enemy attacks are harder to read. Choose Balanced if you have a 120Hz display and prefer its 40-FPS target, or Fidelity if visual detail matters more than responsiveness. Then remap uncomfortable combat inputs, set aim assistance to a level that feels manageable, and adjust visual and audio cues to your needs. Ubisoft does not name a universally best graphics mode; the recommendation is based on its published mode targets and Nightmare’s documented changes.
What makes Nightmare Mode harder?
Nightmare Mode is a survival-focused difficulty described in Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.0.8. Its changes affect combat, stealth, naval encounters, and underwater sections, so the best setup is one that helps you recognize threats and respond consistently—not simply one that maximizes visual effects.
- Ground combat: enemies deal 1.8x damage, parry timing is reduced, and the white glint that warns of enemy attacks is removed. Ranged enemies shoot more often. The one-shot-kill safety feature is disabled, so an attack can kill Edward even when he still has substantial health.
- Stealth: enemies detect Edward much more quickly, but take longer to investigate. They can hear him when he moves faster than a walk. To remain hidden in a high spot, Edward must be at least 6m above an enemy; the previous threshold was 4m.
- Naval and underwater play: ship damage is increased. Sharks deal more damage, urchin and jellyfish damage is doubled, underwater oxygen depletes faster, and harpooned wildlife deals more damage.
These adjustments make clear attack cues, comfortable controls, and an appropriate difficulty balance especially valuable. That is a practical recommendation based on Ubisoft’s description, not a claim that any setting removes Nightmare’s challenge.
Which graphics mode should I use on PS5?
Start with Performance if responsive camera movement and timing matter most. Fidelity favors image quality at a lower frame-rate target, while Balanced is intended for a 120Hz display.

| Mode | Ubisoft’s stated target | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | 60 FPS | Players prioritizing smoother gameplay and responsive inputs | Prioritizes smoothness over the visual emphasis of Fidelity |
| Balanced | 40 FPS for 120Hz displays | Players with a compatible 120Hz display who want an alternative to the 60-FPS Performance target | Requires a 120Hz display to match its intended target |
| Fidelity | 30 FPS | Players who prioritize visual quality over responsiveness | Lower frame-rate target than Performance |
Ubisoft says ray-traced global illumination is enabled in all three modes; ray-traced reflections are added in Fidelity. The targets are Ubisoft’s documented figures, not a guarantee that every scene will hold a specific frame rate. There is no official Ubisoft ranking of the modes. Performance is a sensible general starting point for Nightmare because the mode prioritizes smoother gameplay and the difficulty reduces parry timing, but display preference and comfort should decide the final choice.
When should I switch to Fidelity?
Choose Fidelity if the image-quality priority matters more to you than the quicker-feeling response you may prefer for combat. If you find attacks harder to read or camera movement uncomfortable at the lower target, return to Performance and adjust visual effects before giving up clarity for image detail.
Is Balanced worthwhile without a 120Hz display?
Ubisoft documents Balanced as targeting 40 FPS for 120Hz displays. If your display does not support 120Hz, Performance or Fidelity is the clearer fit among the documented modes; the available data does not establish a separate Balanced target for other displays.
What should PC and handheld players change?
There is no single PC preset that fits every system. Ubisoft says the PC version supports upscaling technologies, frame generation, software ray tracing for hardware without dedicated ray-tracing support, and graphics presets for handheld devices. Its scalable engine means the appropriate configuration depends on the hardware and display.
Use the available presets as a starting point suited to your device, then favor settings that keep combat readable and controls comfortable. Ubisoft’s documentation does not establish universal PC settings or comparable performance figures for specific hardware, so avoid treating any one preset as a guaranteed Nightmare recommendation.
One specific PC patch caveat concerns cutscenes: Title Update 1.0.6 fixed an issue that could lock them at 30 FPS when Graphics settings were changed to Custom from a Low preset. If you encounter that problem, check that the game is updated and avoid assuming a Custom profile inherited from Low behaves like a clean manual configuration.

How do I make attacks and movement easier to read?
Adjust visual effects that interfere with recognizing an attack before reducing the overall image quality. Ubisoft documents controls for motion blur, screen shake, camera effects, and VFX, including highlights, docking spaces, areas of interest, and telegraphed attacks.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- If blur makes movement difficult to follow, turn motion blur off or reduce its effect.
- If camera movement is distracting, reduce or disable screen shake and camera effects.
- If combat warnings blend into the scene, adjust available VFX for highlights and telegraphed attacks to improve visibility.
These adjustments can help with visual comfort and cue recognition, but they do not restore Nightmare’s removed white attack glint. Treat them as ways to make the remaining visual information easier for you to process, not as a substitute for learning enemy behavior.
How do I remap controls for Nightmare combat?
Ubisoft’s documented path for controller remapping is: pause the game, open Options → Controls → Controller → Customize Controls, then edit the Character or Combat tab. You can restore a page to its defaults with Reset Page.
- Open the control editor. Pause, choose Options, select Controls, open Controller, and choose Customize Controls.
- Choose the context. Edit the Character or Combat tab, depending on the action you want to change.
- Move frequent combat actions to comfortable inputs. Prefer buttons that do not require a painful hold or an awkward stick click, especially for actions you use often under pressure.
- Set the input behavior. Ubisoft documents Press, Hold, Double Tap, and Toggle. Use the behavior that fits the action and your comfort; keeping Hold for an action that could activate accidentally may be preferable to Toggle.
- Check the result in play. If the new layout causes accidental inputs or slows a familiar action, return to Customize Controls and adjust it. Use Reset Page if you want to discard changes to that page.
The control options go beyond a single global layout. Ubisoft documents remapping by gameplay context, left-handed button swaps, changes between hold and toggle behavior, and separate X- and Y-axis inversion for ship, on-foot, aiming, camera, and map navigation. It also lists configurable deadzones and thresholds for triggers and analog sticks. These options let you adapt different kinds of play without assuming that one stick or trigger setup suits every activity.
What deadzone should I use?
Start with the default deadzones and raise them only enough to address stick drift. Ubisoft documents adjustable deadzones and thresholds, but does not publish universal numerical values; the useful setting depends on your controller and whether its sticks register movement while untouched.

Which aim-assistance level is best?
Set Aim Assistance to the lowest level that still lets you aim comfortably. Ubisoft documents four choices—Off, Light, Moderate, and Full—but does not designate one as the correct setting for Nightmare.
| Setting | When it may suit you |
|---|---|
| Off | You prefer entirely manual aiming and do not need targeting assistance. |
| Light | You want some help while keeping more manual control. |
| Moderate | Light assistance is not enough, but you still want aiming to feel substantially manual. |
| Full | Precision, fatigue, or motor-control barriers make lower assistance difficult to use. |
Nightmare makes missed or delayed reactions more consequential: ranged enemies shoot more often and one-shot protection is disabled. That is a reason to choose assistance that you can use reliably, not a reason to force yourself to play with less help. Full assistance is a valid accessibility choice; Off is a preference, not a badge of difficulty.
Which accessibility settings matter most?
Accessibility options can be used to make Nightmare more manageable without framing them as cheats. Ubisoft documents options across controls, difficulty, visuals, audio, captions, and underwater play. The exact availability of every option in every platform menu is not established, so check the options present in your game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdjust difficulty by activity
Difficulty can be set separately for naval, ground, activity, and stealth gameplay. If one type of encounter is the main barrier, adjusting its category gives you an alternative to changing unrelated parts of play. The available information does not specify every platform’s menu flow for making these changes.
Reduce underwater intensity if needed
Underwater intensity can be reduced, including options to turn off the oxygen limit and shark attacks completely. Because Nightmare makes oxygen deplete faster and sharks deal more damage, these adjustments may be useful if the underwater pressure is the part that prevents you from continuing comfortably.
Change visual and reading options
Colorblind presets are available for Red-Green Blindness and Blue-Yellow Blindness. HUD elements can be turned off individually or together, while text and icon sizes, opacity, and backgrounds can be adjusted. QTEs can be skipped, and blood and gore can be turned off. These are separate choices: for example, increasing HUD text size does not require you to enable every HUD element.

Customize motion, captions, and narration
Motion blur, screen shake, camera effects, and VFX can be customized or disabled. Subtitles, speaker names, emotion labels, closed captions, and gameplay captions are configurable. Screen narration is available in menus and gameplay, with voice and speed controls. Audio options include separate volume controls, Focus Mix, and configurable dynamic range.

Ubisoft provides specific menu paths for color presets and captions. Subtitles are enabled by default, while narration has voice and speed controls in the available screen-narration options.
Choose a colorblind preset
- Open Options → Interface → Color Preset.
- Select Default, Red-Green Blindness, or Blue-Yellow Blindness.
Title Update 1.0.7 fixed multiple colorblindness issues. That update also addressed missing menu narration and gameplay captions, so update the game before deciding that one of these systems is unavailable or malfunctioning.
Configure captions and subtitles
- Open Options → Audio → Captions.
- Adjust subtitles and, as needed, speaker names, emotion labels, closed captions, and gameplay captions.
Subtitles are on by default. The additional caption controls help you decide how much dialogue and sound information appears on screen.
Set narration to your preference
Screen narration is documented for menus and gameplay, and its voice and speed can be adjusted. If the narration is too fast or difficult to follow, change those controls rather than assuming it has to remain at its default presentation.
Should I keep haptics and game audio on?
Keep haptics if they help you notice combat or naval events; reduce them if vibration causes distraction, fatigue, or sensory overload. Ubisoft says vibration feedback is enabled by default with a supported controller, and documents its controls under Options → Controls → Controller.

In that menu, gameplay, cinematics, and interface vibration can each be turned off or set to Default or Light. You can therefore reduce one type of vibration without necessarily changing the others. A supported controller is required for vibration feedback; Ubisoft’s documentation also identifies the DualSense wireless controller as relevant to haptics and adaptive triggers on PS5.
For audio, the game provides separate volume controls for voice, music, foley FX, gameplay FX, menu audio, ambient audio, and sea shanties, along with Focus Mix and dynamic-range settings. Use the separate controls to emphasize information you need or reduce sounds that compete with dialogue and other cues, rather than assuming that one overall volume adjustment is the only option.
What is a good starting setup for different players?
Use these profiles as starting points, then change one category at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps. They are recommendations derived from Ubisoft’s documented options, not officially prescribed presets.
- For timing and responsiveness: choose Performance on PS5, remap frequently used combat actions to comfortable buttons, and set aim assistance to Light or Moderate if you want help without relying on full assistance. Reduce motion blur or camera movement if either makes attacks harder to follow.
- For visual detail: choose Fidelity if you are comfortable with its 30-FPS target. Keep any visual effects that help you read the scene, and reduce effects that add distracting movement or blur.
- For a 120Hz display: try Balanced for its documented 40-FPS target. If the result does not feel as comfortable for your timing, compare it with Performance rather than assuming one mode is best for everyone.
- For controller comfort: remap actions by Character or Combat context, change Press/Hold/Double Tap/Toggle behavior where appropriate, and increase deadzones only enough to deal with drift. Consider left-handed swaps, axis inversion, or camera assistance if they make control more accessible.
- For reduced sensory load: lower or turn off haptics, motion blur, screen shake, or camera effects as needed; adjust captions, narration, audio mix, and HUD readability to suit your preferences.
- For difficult underwater sections: reduce underwater intensity if necessary, including turning off the oxygen limit or shark attacks if those are the specific barriers.
Nightmare’s challenge comes from several different systems, so a setup that helps one player may not help another. The most useful configuration is the one that preserves the parts of the difficulty you want while making controls, information, and sensory effects workable for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change settings after starting a Nightmare save?
Ubisoft documents a pause-menu route for controller customization, but the available information does not establish that every graphics, difficulty, or accessibility option can be changed at every point in a save. If a setting is unavailable during play, check the game’s options menu outside the current activity rather than assuming the save is locked to its initial setup.
Do accessibility options disable Nightmare Mode?
Ubisoft lists accessibility options alongside the game’s difficulty systems, but does not state that every option is available on every platform or that all preserve an identical challenge. Treat each setting as an accommodation to evaluate in your own game, not as a promise about how every encounter will behave.
What if captions or menu narration seem to be missing?
Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.0.7 addressed missing menu narration and gameplay captions, as well as multiple colorblindness issues. Check that the game has received that update before troubleshooting the relevant option further.
