For a first playthrough, play BioShock, then BioShock 2, optionally Minerva’s Den, then BioShock Infinite, followed by Burial at Sea Episode One and Episode Two. That order is a spoiler-conscious recommendation, not a technical requirement. BioShock Infinite tells a mostly self-contained Booker-and-Elizabeth story in Columbia, so you can begin its main campaign without finishing BioShock 2. The two Burial at Sea episodes should come after Infinite, and the original BioShock is best played before them.
Allow roughly 8–12 hours for an informal first-game estimate, 11–16 hours for a typical BioShock 2 run depending on edition and extras, and 10–16 hours for an informal Infinite estimate. The add-ons add several more hours, but the available figures are estimates rather than guarantees.

Use the release-and-story bridge order: BioShock → BioShock 2 → Minerva’s Den (optional) → BioShock Infinite → Burial at Sea Episode One → Episode Two. This lets you experience Rapture before Columbia and leaves the crossover-focused material until you have the necessary context.

1. BioShock
Start here even if you eventually want to focus on Infinite. It establishes Rapture, the setting and ideas that later entries reference. Playing it first also makes the callbacks in Burial at Sea easier to understand without requiring a plot summary that could spoil discoveries.
2. BioShock 2
BioShock 2 is another story set in Rapture, rather than a direct continuation of the first game’s playable character. The publisher describes it as a separate Rapture experience, so it is not a prerequisite for understanding Infinite; playing it second simply keeps the setting’s stories together.
3. Minerva’s Den (optional)
Play this single-player add-on after BioShock 2. It is a compact story in the same broad Rapture era and is best treated as extra content, not as a fourth main numbered game.

Infinite moves to Columbia and follows Booker and Elizabeth. Its main campaign has its own premise and can be started without completing BioShock 2. For a first run, however, placing it after the two Rapture games gives you a smoother progression from the original setting to the later, more connective material.
5. Burial at Sea Episode One, then Episode Two
Play both episodes in sequence after the main Infinite campaign. They revisit Rapture through the lens of Infinite and are not interchangeable with the numbered games. Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, said in the February 5, 2014 announcement for Episode Two that it involves “nearly every major character from the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite” (official announcement). That connection is why the episodes work best after both the original game and Infinite.
Can I play BioShock Infinite first?
Yes. You can begin Infinite without playing BioShock 2, and its Columbia campaign is designed around a new setting and lead characters. The trade-off is context: later Burial at Sea material reconnects elements from Infinite and the original BioShock, so starting with Infinite does not remove the need to play the original before those episodes.

If Infinite is the only game you own, play its main campaign on its own terms. When you later obtain the collection, return to the original BioShock before starting Burial at Sea, rather than treating the add-on as a standalone expansion.

How long does each BioShock game take?
Use the figures below for planning, not as promises. The sources use different editions and methods, and the informal ranges for the first game and Infinite came from an individual player rather than a representative sample.
BioShock: about 8–12 hours, tentatively
The available 8–12-hour range is one player’s informal estimate. It is not a publisher figure or an independently verified aggregate. Searching every room, listening to all optional audio, increasing the difficulty or replaying sections can push a personal run beyond that range.
BioShock 2: 11–24 hours depending on goals and edition
For BioShock 2 Remastered, HowLongToBeat figures displayed by IsThereAnyDeal list 11 hours for the main story, 14 hours with side content and 24 hours for completionist play (IsThereAnyDeal’s statistics page). Those are estimates, not a guaranteed completion time.
A separate Grouvee listing for the original BioShock 2 reports 13 hours for the main story, 16 hours with extras and 22 hours at 100%, based on 61 logged playthroughs when checked (Grouvee game page). Because the edition and sample differ, do not combine the two rows into one precise average.
Minerva’s Den: about 4–5 hours
HowLongToBeat figures displayed by IsThereAnyDeal give Minerva’s Den about 4 hours for its main story and 5 hours for completionist play (IsThereAnyDeal’s statistics page). It is short enough to finish between the larger campaigns, but it still adds meaningful story content to your schedule.

BioShock Infinite: about 10–16 hours, tentatively
The 10–16-hour range is another individual player’s informal estimate, not a publisher or aggregate statistic. Exploration, optional encounters, difficulty and whether you reload earlier sections all affect the result. Treat it as a planning window for the main campaign rather than a measured standard.
Burial at Sea Episode One: about 2–4 hours
HowLongToBeat figures displayed by IsThereAnyDeal list 2 hours for the main story, 3 hours with side content and 4 hours for completionist play (IsThereAnyDeal’s statistics page). Episode One is therefore a short campaign compared with the numbered games.
Burial at Sea Episode Two: no dependable duration established
No independently verified playtime figure was established for Episode Two. Do not silently add an invented number to Episode One’s estimate; allow an extra session or two and let your pace determine the final time.
How long is the entire collection?
Plan for several dozen hours for the three main campaigns, then add the optional stories. A precise total would imply more certainty than the evidence supports because the BioShock and Infinite ranges are anecdotal, the BioShock 2 figures differ by edition and source, and Episode Two lacks a verified duration.
For scheduling, separate your goals:
- Main campaigns only: the original game, BioShock 2 and Infinite form the core multi-dozen-hour commitment.
- All included single-player stories: add roughly 4–5 hours for Minerva’s Den and 2–4 hours for Episode One, then reserve unmeasured time for Episode Two.
- Completionist runs: expect a much longer schedule because the published estimates count collectibles, optional areas and other extras differently.
Your difficulty choice and willingness to explore matter as much as the headline estimates. Someone following only critical paths may finish sooner than someone listening to every audio diary and searching every side room.
What does BioShock: The Collection include?
BioShock: The Collection is the broadest single purchase option when you want the trilogy and its story add-ons. The publisher’s announcement says the package includes two discs and all three games’ single-player content, specifically naming Minerva’s Den and both Burial at Sea episodes (publisher announcement).

That wording matters: the collection documentation describes single-player content, so do not assume it includes BioShock 2 multiplayer. Epic’s digital listing names the included editions as BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered and BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition. PlayStation identifies a PS4 edition, and the publisher announcement also identifies Xbox One.

Choose according to how much of the series you want and which platform you own, rather than assuming every listing contains the same extras.
Choose the collection for the full single-player set
The collection is the practical choice if you want all three campaigns, Minerva’s Den and Burial at Sea without assembling separate purchases. Check that the listing matches your console and format, and verify that a used physical copy contains both discs and any required packaging or codes.
Choose a single game to sample the series
A standalone original BioShock copy makes sense if you only want to test the first game before committing to the trilogy. It will not provide the later campaigns or their add-ons, so compare the narrower purchase with the collection’s included single-player content.
Match the platform and listing details
Physical PS4 and Xbox One editions and digital listings can differ by storefront, region and edition name. Confirm the exact platform, whether the copy is new or used, which remastered versions are present and whether the listed add-ons are included. Do not rely on an old price or an unspecified listing; availability and retailer terms change.
What can change your actual playtime?
- Exploration: optional rooms, audio diaries and environmental details reward a slower route.
- Difficulty: harder settings can add retries and increase the time spent on combat encounters.
- Optional objectives: side content and collectible goals are counted differently by each tracking site.
- Edition: remastered and original versions may be tracked separately, as shown by the two BioShock 2 sources.
- Replay goals: a second run for alternate choices, missed collectibles or a different build is outside a first-playthrough estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to finish BioShock 2 before starting BioShock Infinite?
No. BioShock Infinite introduces Columbia, Booker and Elizabeth and can be understood as its own main campaign. Finishing BioShock 2 first is an ordering preference for keeping the Rapture stories together, not a requirement.
Is Minerva’s Den part of the BioShock 2 campaign?

You can launch the episodes if they are installed, but the experience is better after the original game. Episode Two was described by Ken Levine as involving major characters from both the original BioShock and Infinite, making the original game useful context.
