If Baldur’s Gate 3 spoiled you with companions who remember your choices, challenge your ethics, and earn intimacy through personal quests, start with Dragon Age: Inquisition or Dragon Age: Origins. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the best long-running alternative, while Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader add even denser role-playing systems. What makes romance feel as deep as Baldur’s Gate 3?
In BG3, romance is not a bar that rises when you hand over gifts. Companions have approval, personal quests, boundaries and private agendas. They can challenge your decisions, leave camp when pushed too far, confront other partners and appear beside you in the finale or epilogue. Sources including GamePulse and TechTudo describe the system as broadly player-sexual: almost every companion can be pursued regardless of the protagonist’s gender, although individual scenes still have requirements.
The useful test is reactivity plus stakes. A deep route changes dialogue when you help or betray someone, responds to your character’s identity or ideology, and gives the relationship a place in the ending. A large list of possible spouses is not enough; Skyrim, for example, offers quantity with thinner courtship. Which games are the closest romance-first alternatives?
1. Dragon Age: Inquisition — the nearest modern fantasy match
Inquisition is the strongest starting point if you want a party that talks between missions, reacts to your political choices and develops relationships over a long fantasy campaign. Its approval-based arcs branch through dialogue and loyalty decisions. Romanceable characters include Sera, Josephine, Cassandra, Cullen, Blackwall, Dorian, Iron Bull and Solas, among others. The trade-off is age. Polygon’s 2026 coverage notes that the combat and presentation show their years beside BG3. The original platforms were PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC; the Ultimate Edition remains sold on Steam. Pick it when character conflict matters more than modern visuals or seamless controls.
3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition — the best slow-burn relationship across multiple games

4. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — the systems-heavy CRPG answer
Wrath of the Righteous is for players who want tabletop-style character building alongside romance. GameSpot’s 2026 description counts 25 classes, 12 characters and nine Mythic Paths. You can play in turn-based mode or real time with pause, and your Mythic Path—such as Angel, Demon, Lich, Azata, Aeon or Trickster—can reshape a relationship.
Daeran, Arueshalae, Lann, Wenduag, Sosiel and Camellia have routes that react to alignment, gender and major quest decisions. Arueshalae’s redemption and Camellia’s darker impulses show why this is not a simple affection meter. The rules are more complicated than D&D 5e, so expect more planning, modifiers and build choices than BG3. It is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, PC and Switch.
5. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader — romance with campaign-level political risk
Rogue Trader applies Owlcat’s dense party tactics to a grimdark science-fiction setting. Companions such as Cassia, Jae, Yrliet, Heinrix and Marazhai have romance paths that intersect with the game’s Iconoclast, Dogmatic and Heretical moral alignments. TechTudo reports that these relationships can affect the fate of entire factions and produce unexpected endings, making the stakes broader than a private epilogue.
The Void Shadows and Lex Imperialis expansions added romance options and faction-warfare mechanics according to 2026 coverage. Choose Rogue Trader when you want turn-based combat and consequential role-playing, but prefer a morally oppressive setting to medieval fantasy. Its tone is much harsher than BG3, and the cited coverage does not establish a complete platform list, so check the current storefront for your device.
6. Cyberpunk 2077 — cinematic intimacy instead of a party camp
Cyberpunk 2077 is the best alternative when production value and personal intimacy matter more than controlling a full adventuring party. Judy, Panam, River and Kerry have multi-stage questlines about grief, exploitation and survival. Standing by a character during those quests can turn friendship into romance; partners may share an apartment key, send messages and influence available endings. Rogue and Meredith Stout provide additional encounters, but not every encounter is a full relationship.

Which narrative RPGs have strong romance but less party similarity?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 offers mature, carefully written romance through Geralt’s relationships with Yennefer of Vengerberg and Triss Merigold. There is no approval meter and no created protagonist: key conversations test loyalty and honesty through story flags. Romance also intersects with the wider fate of Ciri, giving the choices context beyond dating.
This is a fixed-hero action RPG, not a BG3-style camp where every party member can be pursued. It launched on 19 May 2015 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with versions for Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series. Pick it for narrative intimacy and world-building, not for build freedom or a broad companion roster.
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal uses a school-year calendar and Confidant ranks. Romance usually becomes available at rank nine, and dating more than one person is possible; Valentine’s Day can expose that decision. The structure creates anticipation and routine rather than BG3’s camp improvisation, and its high-school setting has a different age and tone from adult fantasy companions.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

You choose a route, recruit from a route-dependent pool and build relationships before an S-Support near the final battle. Same-gender options exist for both versions of Byleth, but not every S-Support is explicitly romantic; some represent a close partnership.
It is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and a tactical strategy game rather than a free-roaming CRPG. Choose it if your favorite BG3 moments were getting to know a party over time and seeing bonds reflected after the war.

Are Dragon Age: The Veilguard and newer games worth it for romance?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has a complete romance roster—Bellara Lutare, Neve Gallus, Taash, Davrin, Lace Harding, Lucanis Dellamorte and Emmrich Volkarin—but its romances are milder than Inquisition’s and mostly affect late-game dialogue. It is better understood as a more action-oriented Dragon Age than as an Inquisition replacement for relationship depth.
The Blood of Dawnwalker, released in 2026 by Rebel Wolves, offers named romances with Anca, Lacra and Crake. Those relationships change events during the story but not the ending, and missions advance time rather than an always-running clock. It is available for PS5, Xbox Series, Steam and GOG. Treat it as a promising new action-RPG option, not a proven BG3-scale companion simulation.
What should I play if I loved BG3’s combat more than its dating?
Choose these for the mechanics, with a romance caveat:
- Divinity: Original Sin 2: Larian’s earlier party RPG has reactive quests, environmental physics and co-op that many players find even more playful than BG3. Romance exists, but 2026 romance roundups do not treat it as a headline feature.
- Solasta: Crown of the Magister: a strong 5e combat trainer with less companion writing. Reports of a Solasta II exist, but its release details were not confirmed in the cited first-party material.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: a linear 2025 grief-focused RPG with little party-creation freedom, praised for its story but not built around dating.
- Disco Elysium: exceptional dialogue and role-playing without conventional combat or a romance system.
Wasteland 3 should not be sold as a romance substitute: Polygon explicitly states that it has no romance system. These games may satisfy the tactical or writing itch, but they do not reproduce BG3’s companion intimacy.
Do romance choices change the main story or ending?

Inquisition and Mass Effect offer many inclusive routes, while Three Houses provides same-gender options for both Byleths. Pathfinder’s routes have alignment, gender and other eligibility rules, and Cyberpunk’s major romances are more tightly gated by V’s gender or body configuration. Always check the specific companion requirements rather than assuming an entire game shares one rule.
