For head-tracked headphone monitoring in Wwise, use headphone panning, enable Allow 3D Audio and Allow System Audio Objects on the System Audio Device, route positional content to an Audio Objects bus, and keep each sound at 100% 3D spatialization. Turn on Listener Relative Routing, then choose 3D Spatialization = Position or Position + Orientation. On Windows, set System Minimum Object Requirement to 16 when the endpoint exposes fewer than 30 dynamic objects; the default 32 can prevent objects from being emitted. Finally, verify the path in Wwise’s Audio Object 3D Viewer and make sure no second platform spatializer is processing the signal.

These settings preserve the position metadata that a head-tracking endpoint needs. Head tracking changes the listener’s orientation as the listener turns; it does not correct a sound that was routed through an ordinary mixing bus or converted to a channel mix too early.

What is the recommended Wwise signal path for head-tracked audio?

The reliable path is positional sound → Audio Objects bus → Master Audio Bus/System Audio Device → platform spatial audio endpoint. The endpoint receives each object’s location, spread and related metadata instead of only a pre-mixed speaker signal. A head-tracking system can then update the listener orientation while the endpoint renders the scene.

Do not route those sounds through a conventional mixing bus before the Audio Objects bus. Mixing can destroy positional metadata before it reaches the System Audio Device.

Should I use headphone or speaker panning in Wwise?

Use Headphone panning when the intended monitor is a head-tracked headphone endpoint. Wwise documents separate Speaker and Headphone panning rules; Speaker is the default on most platforms, while portable platforms such as Android and iOS default to Headphone.

How to choose the rule in Authoring

  1. Open Audio > Main Mix Channel Configuration.
  2. Audition the project with the panning rule you intend to ship or monitor.
  3. Listen for the behavior of your objects while changing listener orientation, rather than judging a static left-right balance alone.

The authoring choice is not necessarily the final runtime choice. If the project must select a rule dynamically, use AK::SoundEngine::SetPanningRule at runtime and make the selection match the active endpoint.

When Speaker panning is still appropriate

Speaker panning remains the documented default on most platforms and is appropriate when the output is being rendered as a speaker layout rather than a headphone-monitoring path. Head tracking is most useful when the endpoint interprets a listener’s orientation, so confirm the endpoint’s capabilities before assuming that changing the panning rule alone enables tracking.

How do I configure the Windows System Audio Device?

Windows sends Wwise’s Main Mix to Microsoft Spatial Sound when the endpoint has Spatial Sound enabled. If Spatial Sound is disabled, Wwise falls back to a WASAPI stream without 3D Audio, so the object path cannot behave as intended.

  1. In Wwise, select the System Audio Device.
  2. Enable Allow 3D Audio.
  3. Enable Allow System Audio Objects.
  4. In Windows, enable Spatial Sound for the output endpoint you are using.
  5. Run a test with a positional source and inspect whether an Audio Object appears in Wwise’s viewer and meters.

The Windows default channel configuration is 7.1.4. That channel layout is the Main Mix configuration; it does not replace the need to send eligible positional content as Audio Objects.

Why the Windows endpoint setting matters

Allowing 3D Audio tells Wwise that the endpoint may perform spatial rendering. Allowing System Audio Objects permits Wwise to hand over dynamic object metadata. If either capability is unavailable, a project can still produce sound while silently losing the object-based path needed by the platform renderer.

How should I route sounds to preserve object metadata?

Create an Audio Objects bus under the Master Audio Bus and send positional sounds directly into that object path. Keep effects and summing stages that turn objects into a channel mix out of the route before the System Audio Device.

Object-bus setup

  1. Under the Master Audio Bus, add an Audio Objects bus.
  2. Assign the positional sound’s output to that bus.
  3. Confirm that the bus remains an object path rather than being folded into a conventional mixing bus.
  4. Leave the System Audio Device as the endpoint receiving the object stream.

The purpose is preservation, not merely organization: once positional metadata has been replaced by a speaker-channel mix, the endpoint no longer has the original object position to render.

What to check when an object is missing

  • The sound is actually routed to the Audio Objects bus.
  • The System Audio Device has both 3D Audio and System Audio Objects enabled.
  • Windows Spatial Sound is enabled for the selected endpoint.
  • The sound’s 3D spatialization mix is not below 100%.
  • The object count has not exceeded the endpoint’s available capacity.

Should I choose Position or Position + Orientation?

Choose Position when the source’s location is all the scene needs. Choose Position + Orientation when the source has a meaningful facing direction and the renderer should receive that orientation as well.

Wwise setting Use it when Metadata emphasis
Position The source only needs to be located in the scene. Source location.
Position + Orientation The source’s facing direction matters to the spatial result. Source location and orientation.

Both modes still require Listener Relative Routing and a 100% Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix for the object path described here. Head tracking updates the listener side of the relationship; it does not make a non-positional source positional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should 3D Spatialization Mix be set to 100%?

A 100% setting keeps the sound fully in the object-based spatialization path. Lower values blend in speaker-panned content, which can reduce how much of the source is carried as an object and make endpoint behavior harder to diagnose.

Set the property named Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix to 100% on each positional sound. Use the same value while testing so that a missing object is not confused with an intentional dry or channel-panned blend.

What object-capacity setting should I use on Windows?

Wwise defaults System Minimum Object Requirement to 32, but many spatial engines expose fewer than 30 dynamic objects. Audiokinetic recommends lowering the requirement to 16 so System Audio Objects are available on most such engines.

Setting or capability Documented value Meaning
Wwise default System Minimum Object Requirement 32 The minimum object capacity Wwise initially expects.
Audiokinetic recommendation for many engines 16 Allows System Audio Objects when an endpoint exposes fewer than 30 dynamic objects.
Endpoint situation prompting the change Fewer than 30 dynamic objects The endpoint may fail the 32-object requirement and withhold object output.

This is a capacity setting, not a sound-quality control. After changing it, profile CPU use and active object counts in the target configuration. The correct value depends on what the endpoint actually supports; setting it to 16 does not create additional hardware capacity.

How do I verify that Wwise is sending head-tracked-ready objects?

Use an automation path that moves the source or listener away from the origin, trigger the sound, and inspect the object in Wwise’s Audio Object 3D Viewer and meters. This catches routing and metadata problems before they are mistaken for headset or head-tracking failures.

  1. Create an automation path that moves away from the origin.
  2. Use Emitter With Automation or Listener With Automation for the test.
  3. Trigger the positional sound while the path is moving.
  4. Open the Audio Object 3D Viewer.
  5. Check the displayed object position, spread and metadata.
  6. Watch the meters to confirm that the object is active during movement.

A static test can pass even when coordinates are not updating. Movement gives you a visible change to correlate with the sound and makes it easier to distinguish a listener-orientation issue from a missing-object issue.

What a successful verification establishes

  • The sound reaches an Audio Objects route.
  • The object carries changing position information.
  • The selected spatialization mode is being applied.
  • The endpoint path is active rather than a fallback channel stream.

It does not establish a universal sound-quality winner. No independent listening test, latency benchmark, measured CPU result or comparative sound-quality study is established for these settings across every engine and endpoint.

How does head tracking fit into the Wwise setup?

Head tracking changes listener orientation; it does not remove the need for correct Wwise positional routing. Wwise must still send an object with valid position metadata, and the endpoint must accept 3D Audio and System Audio Objects.

A reported announcement dated October 22, 2026 describes Audeze and Audiokinetic integrating native head-tracking support for the Audeze Maxwell 2 ANC headset in Wwise. The report describes real-time, self-calibrating head tracking and monitoring over USB-C or low-latency wireless USB-C. Compatibility, firmware requirements, regional availability and stock should be verified at the time you deploy; the announcement alone does not establish that every Wwise version or endpoint supports the same feature set.

For a compatible headset, validate the complete chain: the headset is the selected output, its firmware and tracking mode are current, Windows Spatial Sound is enabled for that endpoint, and Wwise’s object viewer shows moving positional data. If the object moves correctly in Wwise but the acoustic image does not respond to head movement, investigate endpoint integration rather than changing the source’s Position setting at random.

How do I prevent double spatialization?

Use one intentional spatializer. If Wwise applies custom spatialization and the platform applies another spatial-audio effect afterward, the signal can be spatialized twice and produce artifacts. Apple specifically warns that two spatializers can create double spatialization and artifacts.

  1. Identify whether the Wwise project is delivering object metadata for platform rendering or applying a separate spatializer plug-in.
  2. Check the operating system and endpoint for an additional spatial-audio effect.
  3. Disable the platform spatializer when Wwise is doing custom spatialization, unless the integration documentation explicitly requires both.
  4. Retest with the automation path and Audio Object 3D Viewer.

The choice is architectural: native Wwise/System Audio Objects rely on the endpoint renderer, while a plug-in spatializer may render inside the Wwise signal path. Do not enable both simply because each option is available.

Which implementation should I choose?

The following comparison separates the decisions that are often conflated under “spatial audio.”

Decision axis Option A Option B Practical choice
Panning rule Speaker; default on most platforms. Headphone; default on Android and iOS. Use Headphone for head-tracked headphone monitoring; use Speaker for speaker-oriented output.
Object delivery Native Wwise/System Audio Objects. A plug-in spatializer. Keep one spatializer in control and avoid a second platform stage.
Source metadata Position. Position + Orientation. Use orientation only when the source’s facing direction matters.
Object requirement 32, Wwise default. 16, Audiokinetic recommendation for many engines with fewer than 30 dynamic objects. Use the value that the endpoint can satisfy, then profile CPU and object counts.
Endpoint support System Audio Device with 3D Audio and System Audio Objects. Endpoint without those capabilities. The object-based path requires the first set of capabilities.
Platform spatializer Disabled when Wwise custom spatialization is active. Active for endpoint rendering when Wwise sends objects. Do not process the same signal through two spatializers.

Why are my Wwise Audio Objects not reaching Windows Spatial Sound?

Work through the failure in order, starting at the endpoint and moving upstream. Sound coming from the speakers does not prove that the object path is intact.

Windows uses a non-spatial stream

Enable Spatial Sound on the selected Windows endpoint, then confirm Allow 3D Audio in Wwise. Without endpoint Spatial Sound, Wwise falls back to WASAPI without 3D Audio.

System Audio Objects are unavailable

Enable Allow System Audio Objects. If the endpoint has fewer than 30 dynamic objects, change the System Minimum Object Requirement from 32 to 16 and profile the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source was mixed too early

Inspect the routing tree. The positional sound must reach the Audio Objects bus under the Master Audio Bus without first passing through a mixing bus that converts it to channels.

The source is only partly spatialized

Check Listener Relative Routing and set 3D Spatialization to Position or Position + Orientation. Set Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix to 100% while diagnosing the route.

Two spatializers are active

Disable the platform effect when Wwise is performing custom spatialization, then repeat the moving automation test. Double processing can sound like a tracking or localization defect even when object metadata is valid.

What should I save as authoring defaults?

Save only settings that match the endpoint and routing architecture you will actually support. A practical default for a Windows head-tracked headphone project is Headphone panning, System Audio Device 3D Audio and System Audio Objects enabled, an Audio Objects bus under the Master Audio Bus, Listener Relative Routing, the appropriate Position mode, and a 100% spatialization mix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the object-capacity threshold as a permanent quality preset. It should follow endpoint capability, and any change should be checked with CPU and object-count profiling. Likewise, keep the platform spatializer decision explicit so a future operating-system or headset change does not silently add a second spatial stage.

What is the concise setup checklist?

  • Rule: Headphone panning for head-tracked headphone monitoring.
  • Endpoint: Allow 3D Audio and Allow System Audio Objects on the System Audio Device.
  • Windows: Spatial Sound enabled for the selected endpoint.
  • Routing: Positional sounds sent to an Audio Objects bus beneath the Master Audio Bus.
  • Source: Listener Relative Routing enabled.
  • Mode: Position for location-only sources; Position + Orientation when source orientation matters.
  • Mix: Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix at 100%.
  • Capacity: Set System Minimum Object Requirement to 16 when the endpoint exposes fewer than 30 dynamic objects; profile afterward.
  • Verification: Use Emitter With Automation or Listener With Automation and inspect the Audio Object 3D Viewer and meters.
  • Processing: Disable a second platform spatializer when Wwise is doing custom spatialization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a head-tracked headset if my project uses the Speaker panning rule?

The documented defaults do not make Speaker panning a head-tracking mode. For headphone monitoring, switch to Headphone panning and verify the endpoint’s 3D Audio and object capabilities; the headset’s tracking integration still has to be compatible with the Wwise and operating-system path.

Does changing the object requirement from 32 to 16 add more dynamic objects?

No. The setting changes the minimum capacity Wwise requires before exposing System Audio Objects. It does not expand the endpoint, so active-object counts and CPU usage still need to be profiled on the target system.

What should I record when reporting a spatial-audio failure?

Capture the Wwise panning rule, System Audio Device capability switches, Windows Spatial Sound state, object-bus route, spatialization mode, object requirement, endpoint model and whether a second spatializer is active. Include an Audio Object 3D Viewer result from a moving automation path so routing and endpoint symptoms can be separated.

Is the Maxwell 2 ANC integration available in every region and Wwise build?

That cannot be assumed from the October 22, 2026 announcement. Check the headset firmware, the Wwise version, regional availability and the current hardware program details before committing a production monitoring setup.
