How to use it when you are stuck
- Create one project for the work. Put the manuscript and the supporting notes that belong to it in the same project so you are not switching between unrelated windows.
- Break the next deliverable into a section. Name it for the smallest useful unit, such as “Opening scene,” “Methods limitation,” or “Act two confrontation,” rather than creating a vague section called “Write.”
- Use the outline to identify one decision. If several sections are out of order, rearrange them first. If the order is acceptable, stop outlining and draft the next section.
- Attach only the research needed for that section. Keeping relevant references close reduces the urge to search the entire project before writing a sentence.
- Set a modest word or character target. A target for one sitting is easier to start than an ambition to finish a chapter. Change the target when the work changes; do not treat it as a judgment of quality.
- Export after the words exist. Formatting and delivery choices are downstream tasks. Resolve them after the draft has enough substance to evaluate.

Microsoft’s product information documents spelling and grammar checking and AI-assisted writing features. Those tools can help when your block is uncertainty about correctness, phrasing, or how to revise a sentence. They do not replace deciding what you mean; use them after you have supplied enough of your own draft for the suggestions to be useful.
How to use it without turning editing into avoidance
- Open a new document and write a deliberately rough first paragraph. Do not begin by selecting styles, building a table of contents, or perfecting the page layout.
- State the next concrete point in a heading or sentence. A visible prompt such as “Explain the limitation” gives the editor a job to support.
- Turn on spelling and grammar review after a short draft exists. Correct obvious errors, but keep the drafting flow separate from line-by-line polishing.
- Use AI-assisted writing only for a defined request. Ask for a rewrite, an outline of the material you supplied, or alternatives for a sentence; review every suggestion against your intended meaning.
- Save and share in the format your recipient expects. Confirm the exact Word and Microsoft 365 edition if a feature, account, or device requirement affects your workflow.

- Name the smallest useful next action. Choose one scene, one paragraph, or one source note. If you cannot name it, the task is still too broad.

Configuration is useful only when it removes a concrete obstacle in the current section.
“I am outlining forever.”

For Ulysses, confirm that the library is using the documented iCloud synchronization path and that you are working in the same Apple account on each device. Do not create parallel copies while synchronization is unresolved. For other applications, verify the storage and account behavior of your specific edition before relying on cross-device continuity.
“Export has become the project.”
Export is a delivery step, not a substitute for drafting. Scrivener and Ulysses both document multiple export paths; use them after the section has enough text to review. If the destination requires a particular format, make a small test export and inspect it before formatting the entire project.

- Keep the original project intact. Make a copy or export a readable version before moving material; do not dismantle the only working file.
