How can I use AI without an internet connection? Prepare it while you are online: install an on-device feature or local-model runtime, download the model, verify that it is cached, and run the exact task with Wi‑Fi and mobile data disabled. Built-in options are simplest when your phone or PC supports them; local runtimes give computer users more model choice. Offline AI can be slower or less accurate than a cloud service, and an app may still require a connection for search, synchronization, updates, or other features. Test before a flight, outage, or remote job rather than assuming that a downloaded model makes the entire app offline.

What does using AI offline actually mean?

“Offline AI” means the inference—the step that turns your prompt and local data into an answer—runs on the device instead of on a vendor’s server. The model files and the application must already be present locally. A model download normally needs internet access; Microsoft describes its Foundry Local runtime as using a downloaded, cached model for later on-device inference.

There are three different situations that are often confused:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fully local inference: the prompt, model processing, and response stay on the device. This is the strongest fit for an outage or a privacy-sensitive task.
  • On-device features inside a larger app: a phone feature such as summarization may work locally while search, account sync, cloud history, or other tools still need a connection.
  • Offline-capable app with online dependencies: a local model may answer, but functions such as semantic search, embeddings, or service-backed suggestions can fail. Visual Studio Code documents this limitation for its local-model path.

Therefore, “the model is local” is not the same as “every feature in the app works offline.” Judge each task, not just the product name.

How do I prepare AI before losing internet access?

Preparation is the difference between a useful offline assistant and an empty interface that only displays an error. Complete these steps while connected.

  1. Choose the exact task. Decide whether you need drafting, summarization, coding help, transcription, or another function. Different features can have different network requirements even within one app.
  2. Check device and operating-system eligibility. Confirm the phone model, Windows edition, macOS or iOS version, available RAM, storage, and language support. Do not assume that a newer app automatically enables local inference.
  3. Install the runtime or feature. Use the platform’s supported local provider or built-in AI feature. On computers, local providers such as Ollama or LM Studio can supply a model to compatible development tools.
  4. Download the model completely. Keep the device on a stable connection and power. A model that appears in a catalog is not necessarily cached; wait for the download to finish and verify that the runtime lists it as available locally.
  5. Put working data on the device. Copy documents, reference files, project folders, and any required templates to local storage. A local model cannot fetch a file that exists only in a cloud drive once the connection is gone.
  6. Run the real workflow with networking disabled. Turn off Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use airplane mode, then perform the same prompt and file operation you expect to use later. This exposes hidden dependencies before they matter.
  7. Record a fallback. Save the model name, provider, app version, and a short set of prompts that worked. If quality is insufficient, keep a smaller or simpler task ready rather than relying on an untested “general” assistant.

Keep some free storage beyond the model’s stated size for temporary files, application data, and generated output. If the download fails, reconnect and complete or restart it before testing again; an incomplete cache cannot provide dependable offline inference.

Which offline AI option fits my device?

The best route depends on whether you already own compatible hardware and whether you value convenience or model choice. This comparison uses the capabilities documented by each platform.

Platform or workflow Offline path Documented requirements or availability Important limitation
Windows computer Foundry Local or another local runtime; Windows also lists Phi Silica for Copilot+ PCs and more than 20 open-source local LLMs for Windows 10 and later. Model availability and speed vary by device. Copilot+ PC specifications include 16 GB RAM, a 256 GB SSD, Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, and an NPU rated at least 40 TOPS. Those Copilot+ figures are for the Copilot+ PC class, not a universal minimum for every local model.
Android phone or tablet Android AICore can run supported Gemini Nano features locally. AICore is available on Android 14 and newer, with feature support determined by the device manufacturer and model. Only supported features are local; availability differs across devices.
Apple device On-device Apple Intelligence models downloaded after setup. Eligibility depends on the device family, operating-system version, supported language, and available storage listed by Apple. Feature and language availability vary, so a compatible-looking device is not enough.
VS Code coding workflow Bring your own local model through a provider such as Ollama. VS Code documents a completely offline local-model path. Semantic search, inline suggestions, and functions that depend on embeddings or Copilot services are unavailable through that path.

Use the built-in option when it already supports your task; it usually requires less setup. Choose a local runtime when you need to select models, keep a project-specific model, or work on a computer whose built-in assistant is cloud-dependent.

How can I run local AI on a Windows computer?

Windows offers both device-integrated and runtime-based choices. Foundry Local is the clearest preparation pattern: acquire a model online, cache it, and then run inference locally.

Check whether the model fits

Start with Microsoft’s local LLM list. It explains which models and Windows versions are available and warns that performance depends on the hardware. A model that technically loads may still respond too slowly for your workload if memory, graphics capability, or the NPU is insufficient.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are evaluating a Copilot+ PC, Microsoft’s minimum specifications are 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, and an NPU with at least 40 TOPS, as listed in its Copilot+ comparison. These numbers describe that product category; they do not mean every local model needs an NPU or exactly those specifications.

Download and cache a model

  1. Install the supported local-model runtime or Windows feature while connected.
  2. Choose a model that fits your available memory and storage.
  3. Start the model download and wait for the runtime to report completion.
  4. Close and reopen the runtime while still connected so you can verify that the model appears in its local cache.
  5. Disconnect Wi‑Fi and Ethernet, then send a test prompt and, if relevant, summarize a file stored on the computer.

Foundry Local may attempt to refresh catalog information when it starts. Microsoft says its cached catalog supports offline use, so a catalog-refresh attempt does not necessarily prevent an already cached model from running. If the model itself is missing, reconnect and download it; catalog behavior cannot substitute for the model files.

Keep expectations realistic

Local Windows models can be useful for rewriting, extraction, brainstorming, and other bounded tasks. They do not automatically provide live web answers, current cloud documents, or every feature of a cloud assistant. Treat a response as generated from the model and the files you supplied, not as a real-time search result.

How can I use AI offline on Android?

On supported phones and tablets, Android AICore provides local processing for selected features through Gemini Nano. Google gives text summarization and smart replies as examples of offline-capable functions, but says support varies by device and manufacturer. Read Google’s AICore explanation for your device’s availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare an Android device

  1. Confirm that the device runs Android 14 or newer and that the manufacturer supports the required AICore feature.
  2. Install pending system and component updates while online.
  3. Allow the on-device model or feature package to finish downloading; keep the phone on power and Wi‑Fi for the initial setup.
  4. Open the exact feature you plan to use and complete a real example, such as summarizing a local note or generating a supported reply.
  5. Enable airplane mode and repeat the test. Check that the feature still produces a result rather than merely opening its interface.

Android’s local capability is feature-specific. A phone can summarize text offline while an assistant action that calls a web service, searches a site, or retrieves a cloud file remains unavailable. Store source text and attachments locally if the task depends on them.

When a local runtime is better

If the built-in feature does not cover your work, an Android development workflow can use a local provider such as Ollama or LM Studio. Google’s Android Studio guide describes installing a provider, downloading a model, starting the inference environment, and selecting that provider in the IDE. The same guide cautions that local models can be less accurate, slower, and less feature-rich than cloud Gemini models; test the particular model and prompt rather than assuming equivalent results.

How does Apple Intelligence work without a connection?

Apple says eligible Apple Intelligence models download after setup and recommends Wi‑Fi and power to speed that download. Whether a feature works offline depends on the exact device family, operating-system release, language pairing, available storage, and feature. Verify those conditions in Apple’s “How to get Apple Intelligence” support page before depending on it.

Prepare and verify

  1. Update the device to the required operating-system version and set a supported language combination.
  2. Complete Apple Intelligence setup while connected to Wi‑Fi and power.
  3. Wait for the on-device model download to finish and confirm that the device has enough free storage.
  4. Test the specific writing, summarization, or other supported feature with a local document.
  5. Disable Wi‑Fi and cellular data and repeat the task. Note which actions remain local and which request a connection.

Do not generalize from one Apple Intelligence feature to all others. Eligibility and availability can differ by region, language, hardware generation, and software version.

How do I code with an AI assistant when I am offline?

Visual Studio Code supports a bring-your-own-key (BYOK) local-model path that can run completely offline, including through a local provider such as Ollama. This is useful when the repository and model are already on the computer, but it is not a full replacement for every cloud coding feature.

Set up the local coding path

  1. Install the local provider and download a coding-capable model while connected.
  2. Open VS Code’s language-model configuration and select the local provider.
  3. Load a repository that is stored on the computer; avoid references that resolve only through a remote service.
  4. Ask a bounded question first, such as explaining a local function or proposing a unit-test outline.
  5. Turn off all network interfaces and repeat the request to confirm that the selected model, not a cloud fallback, handled it.

Know what will not work

VS Code states that semantic search, inline suggestions, and features relying on embeddings or Copilot services are unavailable through this offline local-model route. You can still use the model for conversational explanations or transformations that fit its local context, but a missing feature is a service dependency—not necessarily a broken model. Keep a conventional editor workflow and local documentation available for code navigation when those services are disabled.

How much hardware and storage does offline AI need?

There is no single minimum specification. Requirements change with model size, quantization, context length, operating system, and whether inference uses a CPU, GPU, or NPU. The documented examples below show why a model-by-model check is essential.

Storage calculations should include the model, runtime, updates, temporary files, and your working documents. An external SSD can provide capacity when internal storage is tight, but it cannot add unsupported memory or processing hardware; storage alone does not make an incompatible device capable of local inference.

What works offline, and what usually fails?

Before disconnecting, separate the task into local inputs, local inference, and network-dependent extras.

Usually workable after preparation

  • Generating or rewriting text with a cached local model.
  • Summarizing documents that are stored on the device.
  • Supported Android AICore features such as on-device summarization and smart replies.
  • Eligible Apple Intelligence features whose models have finished downloading.
  • Conversational coding help in VS Code through a configured local provider, within the model’s context and capability.

Common failure points

  • Downloading a model only when the connection is already unavailable.
  • Opening a feature that silently falls back to a cloud service.
  • Requesting web search, live information, cloud-drive files, or account data.
  • Using semantic search, inline suggestions, embeddings, or Copilot-backed functions in the VS Code offline path.
  • Running a model whose RAM or storage requirement exceeds the device’s resources.
  • Expecting cloud-level accuracy, speed, or feature coverage from a smaller local model.

When a prompt fails, first repeat it with all network interfaces disabled. If it works only when connected, identify the specific online dependency instead of assuming that the model cache is corrupt.

How private is offline AI?

Privacy depends on the implementation and the feature, not merely on the word “local.” Microsoft says Foundry Local inference inputs and outputs do not leave the machine. Google describes on-device processing for supported AICore features. Those statements apply to the named products and supported paths; they are not a guarantee for every local-model application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the surrounding app still sends telemetry, synchronizes conversation history, checks an account, or invokes a cloud tool. During a privacy test, disconnect the device, inspect what still works, and review the product’s own data settings. Keep sensitive source files local and avoid pasting secrets into a tool whose network behavior you have not verified.

How should I test and troubleshoot an offline setup?

Use a repeatable test before travel or an expected outage.

  1. Baseline online: run the exact prompt, file operation, and output format you need. Save the result so you can compare quality and speed.
  2. Disconnect completely: disable Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, and cellular data. A device that is merely off Wi‑Fi may still be online through another interface.
  3. Check the model selector: confirm that the app still shows the intended local model or provider, not an unavailable cloud endpoint.
  4. Repeat with a small input: use a short local document first. This distinguishes a network error from a memory or context-size problem.
  5. Test the full-size task: process the real document or repository only after the small test succeeds.
  6. Measure the trade-off: note response time, errors, missing features, and quality compared with the connected baseline.
  7. Reconnect deliberately: restore connectivity only after you know which parts of the workflow are genuinely local.

If the app cannot see the model, reconnect and verify the download and cache status. If it runs but is slow, try a smaller model or shorter context. If the answer is poor, narrow the task, provide clearer local context, or choose a model better suited to the job. If one feature fails while ordinary prompting works, consult that feature’s documentation for a service dependency.

Which approach should I choose for a trip, outage, or remote job?

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Already have a supported phone feature? Start with Android AICore or eligible Apple Intelligence because setup and maintenance are integrated with the operating system.
  2. Need flexible model choice on a computer? Use a local runtime and cache a model sized for the machine.
  3. Need coding help? Configure a local provider in VS Code, then plan for the loss of semantic search, inline suggestions, embeddings, and Copilot-backed features.
  4. Need dependable results for a critical task? Prefer a smaller, tested workflow over an ambitious model that barely fits. Keep local source files and a non-AI fallback.
  5. Need current web information? Offline AI cannot supply live data. Download the references you need beforehand or wait until a connection is available.

The reliable pattern is always the same: prepare while connected, verify the cache, test the exact feature with networking disabled, and document what still requires the cloud. That process matters more than choosing a particular model name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use offline AI with documents stored in cloud storage?

Only after the documents are downloaded to the device. A local model can process a local copy, but opening a file that exists solely in a cloud drive generally requires that service’s connection.

Should I download a large model or a small one for travel?

Choose the smallest model that passes your real task test. Larger models can require substantially more RAM and storage, while local-model guidance warns that speed and accuracy vary by device and model.

Will offline AI give current news or live web answers?

No. Without a network it cannot retrieve changing web content, account data, or cloud documents. Save authoritative reference material locally if your work depends on it.

How can I tell whether an app secretly switched to a cloud model?

Disconnect every network interface and repeat a short known prompt. Check the app’s selected provider or model, and treat any feature that stops working offline as network-dependent rather than assuming the local cache failed.
