The most dependable way to stream lossless music to a hi-fi is to connect a compatible source to your amplifier by wire: use a network streamer’s optical, coaxial or analogue output, or connect a computer or supported mobile device to a DAC or receiver. First check that your music service, playback device and chosen connection all support lossless playback. A lossless subscription or file alone does not guarantee that the signal stays lossless on its way to your speakers.
What “lossless” means for a hi-fi setup
Lossless audio preserves the encoded audio data rather than discarding information to reduce file size. Services describe quality using both a codec, such as FLAC or ALAC, and format figures such as bit depth and sample rate. Those figures describe the audio format; they do not by themselves establish that one track will sound better than another, or that a higher number will be audible in your room.
Think of playback as a chain: service and track → app or Connect protocol → network or cable → playback device and its software → DAC → amplifier → speakers or headphones. Any stage can affect what reaches the system. A service may offer a high-resolution version of a track, for example, while the selected casting route, device firmware or DAC supports a lower ceiling.

“Lossless,” “CD quality” and “hi-res” are not interchangeable promises about the result. Apple describes Lossless as up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless as up to 24-bit/192 kHz on supported routes. TIDAL uses High for 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and Max for up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC. Spotify’s lossless offering is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. These are service format ceilings, not guarantees for every track or every connection.

Choose a route that fits your equipment
Start with the amplifier or receiver you already own. Find its available inputs, then select a source that has a matching output and supports your preferred music service. You do not need to replace a working stereo simply to add streaming.
Network streamer into an existing amplifier
A dedicated network music streamer is often the easiest permanent addition when the hi-fi does not already stream from the services you use. Connect its digital output to a compatible digital input on the amplifier or receiver, or use its analogue output if the amplifier lacks a suitable digital input. Common digital connections include optical and coaxial; check the actual sockets and supported formats on both devices before buying anything.
The streamer must support the specific service and the service’s current lossless mode, not merely advertise a high maximum sample rate. Check its supported services, control options, output type and current firmware. Some devices offer service-specific Connect control, while others rely on the manufacturer’s app or another playback system. Those routes can have different format limits even on one device.

If a computer is already near the stereo, a wired USB connection to a compatible DAC or receiver can be a practical route. Use the service’s desktop app or supported playback method, select the intended output device, and confirm that the DAC or receiver accepts the format you want. A computer’s operating system, app audio settings and DAC all matter; a format available from the service does not ensure that the computer sends it unchanged.

This route can avoid adding a network streamer, but it may be less convenient for everyday listening if the computer is noisy, far away, shared, or needs to remain awake. For Apple Music, Apple’s support guidance notes that an external DAC may be needed to listen above 48 kHz on iPhone or iPad, Android, and some Mac and PC setups.
Phone or tablet connected by wire
A phone or tablet can serve as the source if its connection to the DAC, receiver or powered speakers is supported. Apple’s US support guidance documents lossless playback through supported wired headphones, receivers or powered speakers, and explains that some higher-rate playback requires an external DAC. Android device and accessory compatibility varies, so confirm the route’s support rather than assuming that a USB adapter or a phone’s advertised audio capability settles the question.
Apple TV 4K into an AV receiver
For an Apple Music listener with a compatible home-theater setup, Apple documents Apple TV 4K connected to an AV receiver over HDMI as a playback route. The cited Apple guidance limits Hi-Res Lossless on this route to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) or later. Check the exact Apple TV generation and receiver chain; the existence of an HDMI connection alone does not mean every component supports every format.

Wireless protocols and Bluetooth
Wi-Fi-based streaming and casting are not automatically lossless. AirPlay, Chromecast, a service’s Connect feature and a manufacturer’s own app are distinct routes, and their limits depend on the service, device and software. Check the service’s supported-device information and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and firmware.

Do not choose Bluetooth when preserving a lossless signal is the priority. Spotify explicitly says Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for its lossless signal and compresses it before transmission. Apple also says the cited wireless connections to AirPods and Beats over Bluetooth are not lossless. Bluetooth may be convenient for casual listening, but it is not the route to use for lossless playback.
What each major service supports
| Service | Published lossless formats or ceiling | What to check in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music | Apple’s Europe support page says ALAC is used for most of the catalog, from 16-bit/44.1 kHz up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Lossless is up to 24-bit/48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless is up to 24-bit/192 kHz on supported playback routes. | Check the device and output route, and whether a DAC is needed above 48 kHz. The figures describe the catalog and formats, not a guarantee that each track or route reaches the maximum. |
| Spotify Premium | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Spotify announced a gradual rollout on September 10, 2025, and its October 6, 2025 update said availability had reached more than 50 markets. | Availability is for supported Premium users and compatible devices. Enable lossless quality on each device. For a third-party device, Spotify’s guidance says to use Spotify Connect and select lossless in the device’s quality settings. |
| TIDAL | Max: up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC. High: 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Low: AAC up to 320 kbps. | The track must be available in the selected format and the playback device must support it. Check the device’s DAC and use a wired or Wi-Fi route when preserving quality matters. |
These specifications come from Apple Support, Spotify’s September 10, 2025 announcement and current support guidance, and TIDAL Support. They are format ceilings, not independent listening tests. Apple warns that streaming lossless uses significantly more data and that lossless downloads use more storage, so consider your data plan and available device space when choosing quality settings.
Set up and verify the complete playback chain
- Write down the equipment and inputs. Identify the amplifier or receiver model, its available digital and analogue inputs, and the source you plan to use. For an existing streamer or DAC, note the exact model and firmware rather than relying on a product family name.
- Choose the service and playback device. Confirm that the service is available on the intended device and supports lossless there. For a third-party Spotify device, check current Spotify Connect compatibility and device firmware; support can depend on device, software, content and network conditions.
- Match the outputs and inputs. Connect optical to optical, coaxial to coaxial, USB to a supported USB DAC or receiver, or analogue output to an appropriate analogue input. If the amplifier has no digital input, choose a streamer or DAC with an analogue output. Do not assume a cable or adapter creates support for a format a device cannot decode.
- Enable the service’s quality setting. In Spotify, select lossless quality for the relevant device and configure the quality for Wi-Fi, cellular or downloads as appropriate. Spotify says users must enable the setting on each device. In TIDAL, choose the desired quality setting and verify that the selected track is available in that format. In Apple Music, select a lossless option in the app’s audio-quality settings where available, keeping the device and output route in mind.
- Use the intended route while listening. Select the wired connection, supported network streamer, service Connect route or documented HDMI route you evaluated. A phone may silently switch to Bluetooth, a cast target may use a different format ceiling, or another output may be selected. Confirm the active playback device in the app.
- Check the playback information. Where the app or receiving device reports the current quality or format, inspect it during playback. Compare the reported format with the service’s track availability and the device’s route specifications. A device’s advertised maximum is not proof that the current song is playing at that maximum.
Spotify Support recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for lossless playback. Treat that as Spotify’s recommendation, not a universal bandwidth requirement: actual reliability depends on network stability, household traffic, the playback device and the service’s current behavior. Wi-Fi is Spotify’s recommended wireless option; wired speakers or headphones and Spotify Connect are also recommended in its announcement.
Connection limits are specific to the device and route
One useful illustration is Cambridge Audio’s EVO specification table, initially published May 16, 2024 and revised August 20, 2025. For that product family, the table lists TIDAL Connect and selected app, Roon and USB routes up to 24-bit/192 kHz, while AirPlay 2 is listed at 16-bit/44 kHz and Chromecast at 24-bit/48 kHz. For Qobuz, it lists StreamMagic, Roon and USB up to 24-bit/192 kHz, with lower limits through AirPlay and Chromecast. These are EVO-specific figures, not general limits for all streamers or all versions of those protocols.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The EVO page’s Spotify entry may predate Spotify’s lossless rollout. Use Spotify’s current device guidance and verify the exact model’s firmware instead of inferring current Spotify support from an older manufacturer table. LUMIN product documentation, for example, lists Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay compatibility and Roon Ready among supported protocols and services. That is a useful reminder to inspect a product’s service list; it is not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every model or route.
When comparing streamers, put the relevant route beside the format ceiling. A maximum listed for USB does not establish the maximum for AirPlay or a service Connect feature. The same principle applies to a receiver’s DAC and a computer’s USB output. If the manufacturer does not state a maximum for the exact combination you intend to use, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming it matches another route.
Choose based on the system you already have
- Receiver or integrated amplifier with digital inputs: A network streamer with a matching optical or coaxial output can add network playback without replacing the amplifier. Confirm service support, current lossless mode, input compatibility and route-specific format.
- Amplifier with no digital input: Look for a streamer with analogue output, or use a compatible external DAC between a digital source and the amplifier. Check the DAC’s supported inputs and output level against the system.
- Computer beside the stereo: USB to a compatible DAC or receiver is a direct option. Verify the operating system, service app and DAC settings, particularly if you want a rate above 48 kHz from an Apple device.
- Apple Music and an Apple-centric home theater: A supported wired output is the clearly documented choice for an existing receiver or powered speakers. Apple TV 4K over HDMI is another documented path, with the generation qualification for Hi-Res Lossless noted above.
- Spotify: Turn on lossless on each relevant device and select a playback device that explicitly supports the feature. Spotify Connect or a wired route is preferable to Bluetooth for preserving the signal.
- TIDAL: Use a compatible streamer or wired DAC, and check the track and device when selecting Max. The word “Max” alone does not establish that a particular song is available at 24-bit/192 kHz.
Do not buy based only on a DAC chip name, a headline sample-rate number or a “studio quality” claim. The practical comparisons are service support, lossless support on the exact playback route, compatible outputs and inputs, control method, and dependable operation on your home network. A higher supported sample rate can be a useful compatibility specification, but the official service pages cited here do not establish that it will produce an audible improvement for every listener or track.

Common problems and what to check
The app says lossless, but the system may not be receiving it
Check the active output and the connection between source, DAC and amplifier. Then compare the selected route with the device’s specifications. If the route is Bluetooth, switch to a wired or supported Wi-Fi/Connect path. If it is casting, check the exact protocol and receiver model rather than relying on the source app’s setting alone.
The lossless option is missing
Verify that the account tier and region are eligible, that the app and receiving device are current, and that the feature is supported on that model. For Spotify, lossless is for supported Premium users and availability was described as a gradual rollout; the October 6, 2025 announcement update reported more than 50 markets, not universal availability. For third-party Spotify playback, check Connect support and the device’s own quality settings.
Playback quality changes between tracks
Services may not offer every track in the highest format, and the receiving device may not support every format. Check the track’s displayed quality and device status while it plays. TIDAL explicitly makes availability dependent on the track format and playback-device support; Apple’s catalog figures likewise describe “most” of the catalog rather than every track.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlayback stutters or stops
Check network stability, not only a speed-test peak. Reduce competing network use, move the streamer closer to a reliable Wi-Fi access point, or use Ethernet if the equipment supports it. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for its lossless feature, but that does not guarantee stable playback on a congested or unreliable network.
There is no sound after connecting a DAC or streamer
Confirm that the amplifier is set to the input the source actually uses, that the cable matches the ports, and that the source is sending audio to the intended output. For a digital connection, ensure the receiver or DAC supports the incoming signal. For an analogue connection, check that the streamer’s output is connected to a line-level input rather than an unsuitable input.
Data, storage and listening expectations
Lossless streams and downloads generally require more data or storage than compressed alternatives. Apple explicitly warns that lossless streaming uses significantly more data and that downloads require more storage. Spotify provides separate quality choices for Wi-Fi, cellular and downloads, which lets listeners make different trade-offs by situation. If cellular data or device capacity is limited, choose settings deliberately rather than assuming the highest quality is cost-free.
Finally, treat format labels as technical information, not a promise of a dramatic sonic change. The official specifications establish what a service or device can transmit, but they do not prove that higher resolution will sound better through every system. Reliable playback, a compatible route and a service you actually use are more useful buying criteria than chasing the largest sample-rate number.
