For the easiest practical local build, pair a Mineflayer bot with a private Minecraft Java server and Ollama. The bot reads the world through Mineflayer, sends a compact description of the situation to a local language model, and lets deterministic code carry out movement, gathering, crafting, combat and recovery. You can keep the model and bot on your own computer, with the server on the same machine or another trusted device on your LAN.
Choose MineAI with a local llama.cpp server when you want a more configurable ReAct loop, memory and generated skills. Choose Voyager when your goal is to reproduce a research system for open-ended learning, not when you need a fully offline assistant: its documented setup calls GPT-4 through an API and depends on Fabric and older tested Minecraft versions. The guide below compares these paths, gives a safe setup order, and explains how to keep an autonomous character from turning a test world into an unrecoverable mess.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich local AI Minecraft approach should you choose first?
Most people should start with Mineflayer plus Ollama. It has the fewest moving parts, keeps model inference local, and lets you begin with ordinary chat commands and short survival tasks. The other options are valuable for specific goals rather than as universal upgrades.
| Approach | What stays local | Setup level | Best use | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mineflayer with Ollama (for example, Minecraft-Agent or Embark-Ai) | Bot and model; the server can run on localhost | Moderate: Node.js, a Java server and a downloaded model | First working character, chat commands and survival behaviors | Behavior quality depends heavily on the local model and version compatibility |
| MineAI with llama.cpp | Entire model path can be local; a stronger cloud model is optional | High: Node.js, Python 3.11, Fabric 1.21, llama.cpp and WebSocket components | Developers who want a ReAct loop, memory and skill generation | More processes to configure, monitor and tune |
| Voyager | Bot, server and game can be local, but model calls use the GPT-4 API | High: Python, Node.js, Fabric, Minecraft and an API key | Research reproduction and lifelong skill-library experiments | Not fully offline; the README’s tested versions are older |
| Paper/Mineflayer companion (MCAI) | Local server and bot; Ollama can be used for dialogue | Moderate | Deterministic companion commands with optional AI conversation | It is explicitly an early alpha, and advanced Nether and villager systems are parked |
A local model does not automatically make an agent reliable. The robust design is a small language-model decision layer surrounded by ordinary, testable game code. That separation matters more than choosing a fashionable model name.

How does an AI-controlled Minecraft character work?
The character is an application connected to a Java server, not a model that directly presses keys. Mineflayer supplies the bridge between the game and code; it exposes observations such as inventory, nearby blocks, entities, health and chat, and provides routines for movement and world actions.
Observation and intent
On each cycle, the bot builds a concise state description: its position and health, visible resources, inventory, nearby entities, current goal and recent errors. The model then chooses an intent, such as follow the player, find oak logs or return to base. Sending the whole world to the model is both expensive and confusing, so state should be filtered to what the current task needs.
Recommended Free Tools
Deterministic execution
Code, rather than free-form model text, should perform movement, collection, crafting, combat and block changes. A structured action can be validated against a whitelist, checked for required items and handed to pathfinding or a crafting routine. If a route fails, the executor can retry, choose a safe location or report an error without allowing the model to invent an arbitrary command.
Memory, skills and feedback
Short-term memory holds the current task and recent observations. Longer-term memory can record a successful procedure, a discovered location or a failed approach. MineAI and Voyager-style systems extend this idea by turning successful procedures into reusable skills. Every action should return an outcome—completed, blocked, dangerous or timed out—so the next decision is based on environment feedback instead of optimism.
When does a multi-agent swarm help?
A local-LLM swarm design can assign specialized roles such as scout and farmer, coordinate them through shared context and maintain a central stash. This can make a large project easier to reason about when one generalist bot has too many responsibilities. It also multiplies CPU and RAM use, introduces coordination failures and makes it harder to determine which agent caused a bad action, so a single bot is the better starting point.

What do you need before installing a local agent?
Prepare the game, server, runtimes and model endpoint before connecting an autonomous character. The documented projects target Minecraft Java Edition and a reachable Java server or world; they are not Bedrock add-ons.
Minecraft and a disposable world
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and use the exact game and server version named by the project you selected.
- Keep a separate test world. A fresh world in Creative and Peaceful is useful for validating a connection before survival experiments.
- Bind the server to localhost or a trusted LAN address. Do not port-forward an experimental bot to the public internet.
- Keep a backup of the world before enabling autonomous building, mining or combat.
Runtime versions
- Current local projects generally expect Node.js 18, 20 or newer, depending on the repository.
- Paper or Fabric servers in the 1.21 era require Java 21.
- MineAI’s documented path additionally requires Python 3.11.
- Pin Minecraft, Fabric or Paper, Mineflayer and Node.js versions together. A protocol change can break a bot even when its JavaScript has not changed.
A local model endpoint
Ollama is the simplest path in the reviewed projects: install it, download a model that fits your available RAM or VRAM, and leave its endpoint reachable only from the machine or trusted LAN. llama.cpp offers more control over model files, context and server settings, but requires more manual configuration. The documentation does not establish a single minimum hardware specification; select a model size your machine can load while leaving resources for the game and server.
How do you build the easiest Mineflayer-and-Ollama character?
This sequence gives you a controlled first run without assuming that a particular repository’s folder names or scripts will remain unchanged.
- Choose a compatible project and versions. Read its setup notes, record the Minecraft version, server type, Node.js range and model endpoint it expects, and use those versions rather than the newest available by default.
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and the server. Accept the server’s license terms, start it once so it creates its files, and follow the server project’s documented launch command. Stop it before editing configuration.
- Create a private test world. Use a new seed, enable the game mode and difficulty you want for testing, and confirm that a normal Java client can join. Keep the server address and port on localhost unless a trusted second machine is required.
- Install Node.js and the bot project. Use the repository’s package-manager instructions, then verify that its Mineflayer and pathfinding dependencies install without warnings that indicate a version mismatch.
- Install and start Ollama. Download a model appropriate for your RAM or VRAM and verify that the local endpoint answers before starting the bot. Do not expose the endpoint through router port forwarding.
- Configure the connection. Set the server host and port, bot username, local model name and Ollama endpoint in the project’s configuration. Keep credentials and API keys out of source control, even though the basic Ollama path normally needs no cloud key.
- Start in the right order. Start the Minecraft server and wait until it accepts a client, then launch the bot. Watch the console for a successful login, spawn position, health reading and chat subscription before issuing a task.
- Exercise a narrow command set. Test follow, stop, gather wood, craft tools and return to base one at a time. Save the world after each successful milestone and terminate the bot if it repeats an unsafe action.
Keep the model’s role narrow at first. Ask it to select a known intent and arguments, not to emit JavaScript or unrestricted game commands. Add long-horizon planning, skill generation and combat only after timeout handling, death recovery and rollback are working.
When is MineAI with llama.cpp the better choice?
MineAI is appropriate when you want to study or modify the agent loop itself. Its documented stack combines Node.js, Python 3.11, Fabric 1.21, a llama.cpp server and WebSocket communication. The project describes a Voyager-inspired Python loop that can retain memory and generate skills, while still allowing a stronger cloud model as an optional component.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What the extra components provide
- llama.cpp server: a configurable local inference service with direct control over model files and serving parameters.
- Python loop: a convenient place to implement ReAct-style reasoning, memory, retries and skill generation.
- Fabric integration: game-side data and actions that complement Mineflayer’s bot-side view.
- WebSocket link: a persistent channel between the game integration and the controller.
The cost of that flexibility is operational complexity. You must start several processes, keep their ports aligned and diagnose failures across Java, Python, Node.js and the model server. Build a health check that reports whether each endpoint is alive, and log the last observation, selected action and tool result so a failed run can be reproduced.
Can Voyager run entirely on your own computer?
Not according to its documented setup. Voyager can use a local Minecraft server and bot, but its model calls use GPT-4 through an API, so it requires network access and an API key. Its setup also involves Python, Node.js, Fabric and Minecraft, with tested versions that are older than the current 1.21-era local projects. Treat it as a research reproduction rather than the shortest route to an offline companion.
Why researchers still use Voyager as a baseline
Voyager combines three ideas that are useful even when you build a different local bot:
- Automatic curriculum: the agent selects progressively harder objectives instead of receiving a fixed script for every task.
- Executable skill library: successful procedures are stored as code that can be reused and composed later.
- Iterative prompting and self-verification: the agent uses environment feedback, execution errors and checks of its own results to improve the next attempt.
The Voyager README reports that its experiments obtained 3.3 times more unique items, travelled 2.3 times longer distances and unlocked key technology-tree milestones up to 15.3 times faster than the prior state of the art. Those are the project’s reported experiment results, not a guarantee for a current local model, a different Minecraft version or your hardware.
Its own description calls Voyager “the first LLM-powered embodied lifelong learning agent in Minecraft that continuously explores the world, acquires diverse skills, and makes novel discoveries without human intervention.” Reproducing that behavior requires substantially more infrastructure than asking a Mineflayer bot to gather wood.

What is MCAI useful for?
The Paper/Mineflayer companion project, commonly referred to as MCAI, is a sensible option when you want predictable companion commands first and optional AI dialogue second. It connects a local Paper server and Mineflayer bot; Ollama can supply conversational responses. Because it is explicitly an early alpha, advanced Nether and villager systems should not be treated as complete features.
Use it for a companion that follows, stops, gathers or responds to chat while you keep game actions bounded. If your goal is open-ended learning, automatic skill libraries or research metrics, MineAI or Voyager is a closer fit.
How should you make the character safe and recoverable?
Reliability comes from boundaries around the model, not from a persuasive system prompt.
Validate every proposed action
- Accept only named intents such as
follow, gather, craft, storeandreturn. - Check arguments against the current inventory, distance, health and game mode before execution.
- Require confirmation for irreversible actions such as lava placement, TNT use, opening unknown containers or attacking a named player.
- Set timeouts for pathfinding, mining and crafting. A timed-out action should stop movement and return an error to the controller.
Design recovery before autonomy
- Give the bot a known safe location and a command that immediately stops it.
- Save the world at milestones and keep a second copy outside the server’s active world folder.
- Detect death, respawn and loss of equipment as explicit states rather than treating them as ordinary movement failures.
- Record prompts, observations, selected intents, tool output and exceptions so you can replay the cause of a bad decision.
Expand the curriculum gradually
Start with tasks whose success is easy to verify. Only after those are stable should the bot chain them into plans, write reusable skills, explore caves or fight hostile mobs. This progression also reveals whether a weak result comes from the model, pathfinding, version incompatibility or an incomplete game routine.

| Stage | Example task | Pass condition | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Connection | Join, report position and answer a chat message | Console and in-game response arrive without repeated reconnects | Server address, protocol and chat handling |
| 2. Movement | Follow a player, stop and return to a marked base | Bot reaches the target or reports a blocked route | Pathfinding, interruption and timeout logic |
| 3. Gathering | Collect a small, named quantity of wood | Inventory count increases and bot returns safely | Block sensing, tool use and inventory checks |
| 4. Crafting | Craft planks, a crafting table and basic tools | Expected recipes complete with required ingredients | Recipe selection and state verification |
| 5. Recovery | Handle a blocked path, missing item or death | Bot stops, explains the failure and follows a fallback | Error reporting and safe-state transitions |
| 6. Planning | Gather, craft and store resources as one short plan | Each subtask is checked before the next begins | Memory, sequencing and model feedback |
What commonly breaks, and how do you fix it?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bot cannot join | Minecraft, server and Mineflayer protocol versions do not match | Use the exact version combination documented by the project; do not upgrade one component in isolation. |
| Login succeeds but observations are empty | The bot spawned before the world finished loading or the integration lacks the required server mod | Wait for the server’s ready state, then verify the project-specific Fabric, Paper or plugin component. |
| Model requests never complete | Ollama or llama.cpp is stopped, the endpoint is wrong or the model does not fit available memory | Test the local endpoint independently, correct the host and port, and choose a smaller model if loading fails. |
| Character walks into obstacles | The model is issuing movement text directly or pathfinding errors are ignored | Convert model output to a validated intent and make the executor return a structured failure on timeout or collision. |
| Bot repeats the same failed action | Errors are not fed back into the loop or there is no retry limit | Store the error, increment an attempt counter, change strategy after a small bounded number of retries and stop safely. |
| World is damaged during testing | Autonomy was enabled before backups and action restrictions were in place | Stop the server, restore the last clean world copy and re-enable only the smallest tested intent set. |
| Behavior changes after an update | A Minecraft, Java, Node.js, Fabric, Paper or Mineflayer version changed | Pin versions, keep the working environment, and test upgrades in a cloned world. |
What does a local setup cost and where are the trade-offs?
Minecraft Java Edition for PC is a prerequisite for the documented agents. Ollama and llama.cpp are local model runtimes, so the basic inference path does not require a per-request cloud service, but you still need storage, memory and processing capacity for the model alongside the game and server. No single hardware minimum is established by these projects; model size and context settings determine whether your machine can run comfortably.
Voyager has a different cost profile because GPT-4 API calls are part of its documented architecture. It is therefore not an offline option and can incur usage charges from the API provider. MineAI can remain local or be configured with an optional stronger cloud model, giving you a quality-versus-privacy choice at the expense of another service dependency.
| Decision | Local choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inference | Ollama or llama.cpp | Privacy and no API round trips, but output quality and speed depend on your hardware and model. |
| Server location | Localhost | Smallest attack surface and simplest networking, but the bot and server must share a machine or trusted LAN. |
| Controller design | One Mineflayer process | Easier debugging and lower resource use than a swarm, with fewer specialized roles. |
| Learning strategy | Deterministic skills first | Less improvisation initially, but much easier verification and recovery. |
How do you choose between these options?
Choose Mineflayer with Ollama if your success criterion is a working local character that can chat, follow, gather and craft. Choose MineAI with llama.cpp if you are prepared to operate several runtimes and want to experiment with ReAct reasoning, memory or generated skills. Choose Voyager if reproducing an embodied-learning research baseline matters more than offline operation. Choose MCAI if you want a simple companion with deterministic commands and accept its early-alpha status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can these AI Minecraft agents run on Bedrock Edition?
The documented projects target Minecraft Java Edition and a reachable Java server or world. A Bedrock installation would need a separate bot bridge or compatibility layer, so it is not a drop-in substitute for the setups described here.
Do I need a dedicated graphics card for a local model?
The projects do not specify a universal GPU minimum. Pick a model that fits the RAM or VRAM available after the game and server are running; if a model cannot load reliably, reduce its size or use a different runtime configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does running the model locally mean the whole setup can work without internet?
Ollama and llama.cpp can serve inference from your own machine, but downloading Minecraft files, runtimes and model weights normally requires internet access. Voyager is different because its documented GPT-4 calls remain dependent on an external API during operation.
How can I preserve a world after an autonomous bot crashes?
Stop the server before copying its world folder, keep milestone copies outside the active server directory, and test restoration in a clone. A disposable test world lets you roll back experiments without risking a long-running survival save.
