For most people, Ollama is the simplest way to run local AI across Windows, macOS, and Linux when you are comfortable with a terminal and want a localhost API. LM Studio is the better choice when you want a graphical interface for finding models, chatting, and starting a local server. Neither choice removes the need to match a model to your computer. Windows users must check GPU drivers and available VRAM, Apple Silicon users should size models to unified memory, and Linux users should expect more driver and runtime configuration. Plan storage as carefully as memory: the Ollama application needs at least 4 GB of disk space, while downloaded model collections can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes.

This guide compares the two approaches, gives platform-specific requirements, and lays out a setup path that avoids the most common performance and storage mistakes.

What is the best way to run AI locally?

The best setup depends on how you intend to use the model. Choose Ollama for a command-line workflow, scripts, development tools, Docker, or a background service with a local API. Choose LM Studio for visual model management, an integrated chat window, and point-and-click controls for loading and serving models. Both can run models on all three major desktop platforms, but the practical experience is determined by your processor, system memory, GPU or unified memory, drivers, and free storage.

Decision factor Ollama LM Studio
Primary interface Command line and local service Graphical desktop application
Best fit Automation, development, scripts, Docker, API clients Downloading, organizing, chatting with, and serving models visually
Local endpoint http://localhost:11434 Local OpenAI-like serving endpoint
Model/runtime emphasis Managed local model service with platform GPU paths GGUF models through llama.cpp; MLX is also available on Apple Silicon
Hardware concern Correct NVIDIA, AMD, ROCm, HIP, Vulkan, or Apple acceleration path Memory headroom, supported architecture, and the appropriate acceleration backend
Storage planning At least 4 GB for the application; models can occupy tens to hundreds of GB Model files also require substantial free space; exact capacity depends on what you download

There is no owner-dated cross-platform benchmark that establishes one tool as universally faster. Responsiveness varies with model size, quantization, context length, memory pressure, and the hardware and driver combination in your computer. Treat the first small model as a compatibility test rather than assuming a particular tokens-per-second figure.

How do Windows users run AI locally?

On Windows, start with Ollama if you want a native installation and a terminal or API workflow. Start with LM Studio if you prefer a visual application. In either case, verify Windows version, CPU architecture, RAM, GPU model, VRAM, and available disk space before downloading a large model.

Ollama on Windows

Ollama’s current Windows documentation requires Windows 10 version 22H2 or newer. The native application makes the ollama command available in Command Prompt, PowerShell, and other terminals, and exposes a local service at http://localhost:11434. NVIDIA acceleration depends on a compatible driver. AMD systems can use ROCm/HIP or Vulkan, depending on the hardware and driver support available for that system.

LM Studio on Windows

LM Studio supports Windows x64 and Windows ARM. On x64, the processor must support AVX2. Its published guidance recommends at least 16 GB of system RAM and at least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM. Those are recommendations rather than a guarantee that every model will fit: a larger model, longer context, or several loaded models can require substantially more memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Windows choice is practical?

  • Use Ollama when a script, editor plug-in, container, or other application needs a local service.
  • Use LM Studio when you want to browse and download models, change settings visually, and chat without learning shell commands.
  • If generation is unexpectedly slow, check the NVIDIA or AMD driver before changing models. A missing or incompatible driver can leave work on the CPU even when a capable GPU is installed.

Can you run an LLM on a Mac without sending data to the cloud?

Yes. A supported local application can load the model onto the Mac and generate responses on the computer rather than sending prompts to a hosted service. The practical limit is memory: Apple Silicon uses unified memory shared by the operating system, applications, and the model, so model size must be chosen with that total in mind.

LM Studio requirements on macOS

LM Studio supports Apple Silicon Macs from M1 through M4 and requires macOS 14 or newer. Intel Macs are currently unsupported. The application can run GGUF models through llama.cpp and can also use MLX on Apple Silicon, giving those Macs a runtime designed for their hardware.

Choosing a model for unified memory

LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more of RAM on supported macOS systems. An 8 GB Apple Silicon Mac may run a small model, but expectations should be modest: leave room for macOS and other applications, and expect larger models or long prompts to create memory pressure. Close memory-heavy applications before testing and increase model size only after a smaller model responds reliably.

Ollama on macOS

Ollama is also a practical command-line and service-oriented option on Apple hardware. Select a build and model that can use the Mac’s available acceleration and unified memory. If you need an application to call the model, its localhost service is often simpler than wiring a separate desktop chat program into your workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the easiest local AI setup for Linux?

For Linux, Ollama is usually the shortest path to a service, automation, or Docker-oriented setup; LM Studio is the easier path when you want a desktop GUI. Linux offers broad hardware choice, but GPU drivers and runtimes require more hands-on verification than on a managed desktop installation.

LM Studio on Linux

LM Studio is distributed as an AppImage and supports x64 and ARM64 Linux. Its listed requirement is Ubuntu 20.04 or newer. The AppImage format avoids a traditional package installation, but you still need a compatible desktop environment and enough permissions to run it.

Ollama and Linux GPU paths

Ollama documents NVIDIA, AMD ROCm, and Vulkan paths. Install and verify the vendor driver and the relevant runtime before selecting a large model. If the application falls back to CPU execution, the model may still work but can feel unresponsive; confirm acceleration with a small model before treating a larger model’s speed as representative.

Which Linux workflow should you choose?

  • Choose Ollama for a headless machine, a background service, Docker, shell scripts, or an application that calls a localhost endpoint.
  • Choose LM Studio for an interactive desktop workstation where model discovery and chat controls matter more than shell automation.
  • Keep a known-good small model available as a diagnostic. It separates driver or runtime problems from a model that simply exceeds your memory budget.

How much RAM, VRAM, and storage do local models need?

There is no single memory number for every model. Requirements rise with model size, context length, the runtime, and whether some layers are placed on a GPU. The most useful published baseline is LM Studio’s recommendation of 16 GB or more of system RAM on supported Windows and macOS systems, plus at least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM on Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System RAM and unified memory

System RAM holds the operating system, the runtime, and model data that is not kept entirely in VRAM. On Apple Silicon, the same physical unified memory is shared by CPU and GPU work. A computer can therefore start a model while still becoming unusable when the model, context, and other applications compete for that memory.

Dedicated VRAM

Dedicated VRAM can accelerate supported operations, but capacity is a hard limit for how much of a model can fit on the GPU. Windows guidance for LM Studio recommends at least 4 GB; larger models may need more or may have to spill work into system RAM. That spill can preserve compatibility while reducing responsiveness.

Disk capacity

Ollama states that its binary needs at least 4 GB of disk space, while model files can occupy tens to hundreds of gigabytes. LM Studio model downloads have the same practical consequence: free space disappears quickly when you keep several model variants. Store models on a spacious internal drive or a fast external SSD, and leave working room for the operating system, updates, and temporary files. A 2 TB USB-C external SSD is a sensible capacity target when you expect to keep multiple models, but the right size depends on the models you actually use.

A safe sizing method

  1. Record installed RAM or unified memory and, on Windows or Linux, dedicated VRAM.
  2. Reserve memory for the operating system and normal applications instead of treating all installed memory as available to the model.
  3. Begin with a small instruct model and a normal-length prompt.
  4. Watch for swapping, failed loads, or severe lag before trying a larger model.
  5. Keep enough free disk space that downloading an updated model does not fill the drive.

How do you install and test a local AI setup?

A short hardware check and a deliberately small first model prevent most wasted downloads. Use the following sequence on any platform, then apply the platform-specific requirements above.

  1. Check the operating system. Confirm Windows 10 22H2 or newer for Ollama on Windows. For LM Studio, confirm supported Windows x64 or ARM, macOS 14 or newer on Apple Silicon, or Ubuntu 20.04 or newer on supported Linux x64 or ARM64 hardware.
  2. Identify the architecture and accelerators. Note whether the machine is Windows x64 or ARM, Apple Silicon, or Linux x64/ARM64. Record the GPU, VRAM, and installed driver. On Linux, verify the NVIDIA, AMD ROCm, or Vulkan path you intend to use.
  3. Measure free storage. Allow at least 4 GB for the Ollama application and substantially more for model files. Choose an internal drive or fast external SSD with room for additional models and normal system use.
  4. Install one application. Install Ollama from its official platform installer when you want command-line and service access, or install LM Studio for a GUI workflow. Avoid downloading several runtimes before one has been tested.
  5. Download a small instruct model. A smaller model reduces the chance that memory pressure, a missing driver, or a slow drive is mistaken for a software failure.
  6. Run a repeatable prompt. Ask for a short list or a brief explanation. Note load time, response responsiveness, and whether the computer begins swapping or becomes difficult to use.
  7. Increase size gradually. Change one variable at a time: model size, context, or acceleration setting. Stop when the machine no longer has comfortable headroom.
  8. Connect applications only after the chat test works. Point scripts and development tools at Ollama’s localhost service or LM Studio’s local OpenAI-like endpoint. A working interactive test makes endpoint troubleshooting much easier.

How do Ollama and LM Studio compare for applications and automation?

Both can serve a model locally, but they encourage different operating styles. Ollama behaves like a local service that developers can call from scripts and tools. LM Studio exposes a local OpenAI-like endpoint while keeping model selection and server controls in a GUI.

Choose Ollama for a service-first workflow

  • Command-line access is convenient for shell scripts, repeatable jobs, and development environments.
  • The localhost endpoint at http://localhost:11434 gives local applications a predictable target.
  • Documented NVIDIA, AMD ROCm, and Vulkan paths make it suitable for varied Linux and Windows hardware when drivers are correctly installed.
  • A background-service approach works well for headless or Docker-based deployments.

Choose LM Studio for a desktop-first workflow

  • The GUI makes it easier to find, download, load, and switch among models without memorizing commands.
  • Chat and serving controls are visible in one application, which is useful for experimentation and demonstrations.
  • GGUF through llama.cpp is supported across its platforms, with MLX available on Apple Silicon.
  • The local OpenAI-like endpoint lets compatible applications use the running model without a cloud account.

Do not select solely by interface. A GUI cannot compensate for insufficient memory, and a command-line service cannot bypass an incompatible driver. Compare the two on installation effort, acceleration support, memory and storage headroom, and the way your applications need to connect.

What local AI pitfalls should you expect, and how do you fix them?

Most failures fall into four categories: unsupported platform, missing acceleration, insufficient memory, or exhausted storage. Diagnose the category before downloading another model.

The application will not install

Recheck the operating-system version and architecture. Ollama on Windows needs Windows 10 22H2 or newer. LM Studio requires a supported architecture; Windows x64 requires AVX2, macOS requires macOS 14 or newer on Apple Silicon, and Linux support is listed for x64 and ARM64 with Ubuntu 20.04 or newer as the stated Ubuntu baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model loads but is extremely slow

Verify the GPU driver and runtime first. On Windows, check the NVIDIA or AMD driver path; on Linux, check NVIDIA, ROCm, or Vulkan setup. Then retry a smaller model. If the smaller model is responsive but the larger one is not, memory capacity or model size—not installation—is the likely constraint.

The model fails to load

Free system memory and disk space, close other applications, and reduce model size or context. A model file can be present while the machine still lacks enough working memory to load it comfortably. Confirm that the drive has room for temporary files and additional model metadata.

The computer becomes unusable during generation

Stop the run, close memory-heavy applications, and return to the smaller test model. On an 8 GB Mac in particular, leave more headroom because unified memory is shared with macOS. Increase size only when the smaller configuration remains stable during an ordinary workload.

A client cannot connect to the local model

Confirm that the application or server is running, then use the exact localhost endpoint exposed by that application. For Ollama, the documented address is http://localhost:11434. For LM Studio, copy the endpoint shown by its local serving controls rather than assuming another port.

Linux server or Docker workflow Ollama A service-oriented design and documented GPU paths suit automation.
Windows with uncertain GPU setup Either, after driver verification Driver compatibility determines acceleration more than the front-end choice.

What is the most reliable upgrade path?

Upgrade the bottleneck you can measure. If models fail to load or the system swaps, add RAM or move to a machine with more unified memory. If a model fits but generation is slow, investigate GPU support and VRAM before buying storage. If downloads repeatedly fill the drive, add a fast, spacious SSD; storage capacity does not make an oversized model fit in memory.

For many Windows and Linux desktops, 16 GB or more of system RAM is a practical starting point because it matches LM Studio’s recommendation. A discrete GPU with more than the minimum VRAM can help supported workloads, but the exact benefit depends on the runtime and driver. On Apple Silicon, choose a machine with more unified memory when you expect to use larger models; an external SSD can solve capacity, not memory pressure.

Is running AI locally worth it?

Local AI is worthwhile when you value a workflow that stays on your computer, need a model available without a hosted service, or want a predictable local endpoint for development. It is less attractive when your computer has very little memory, limited storage, or no supported acceleration and you expect large models to feel instantaneous. Start with Ollama for the simplest service and API path, or LM Studio for the simplest GUI path, then let your hardware—not marketing claims—determine the model size you keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a local model work when the computer is offline?

After the application and model files are downloaded, generation can run on the computer without sending the prompt to a cloud service. You still need occasional connectivity for installing software, downloading models, and receiving updates, depending on how you maintain the setup.

What is the difference between GGUF and MLX in a local setup?

GGUF is the model format LM Studio runs through llama.cpp across its supported platforms. MLX is an additional Apple-Silicon option in LM Studio, using a runtime designed for that hardware; it is not a requirement for Windows or Linux.

Is an 8 GB Apple Silicon Mac enough for local AI?

It can run a smaller model, but LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more and explicitly calls for modest expectations on 8 GB machines. Keep other applications closed, use a small model first, and treat any severe swapping as a sign to reduce the workload.

Should I buy more RAM or a larger SSD first?

Buy or add RAM when models fail to load, the system swaps, or memory pressure makes the computer unusable. Choose a larger SSD when model downloads consume your free space; storage expansion will not solve a model that exceeds available working memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same local model from several applications?

Yes, when the runtime is serving a local endpoint and the client supports that interface. Ollama documents its localhost service at http://localhost:11434, while LM Studio provides a local OpenAI-like endpoint shown in its server controls; configure each client with the endpoint exposed by the running application.
