Start with the PC you already own. Check the game’s requirements, close background tasks, update graphics drivers, lower resolution and demanding settings, and test again. If performance is still unacceptable, compare a console edition only when that exact game is available and reliable game-specific performance information exists. Cloud gaming is useful when the service currently carries the game, supports your device, and your network meets its latency and bandwidth needs. Wait for a patch only when the developer has identified the problem or announced a relevant fix; no general rule can predict whether an unnamed game will improve.
What is the best order to try the options?
Use this sequence to avoid spending money before you know whether the problem is local, platform-specific, or caused by the game itself.
- Establish a baseline on the PC. Confirm the game’s listed CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements. Record where the problem appears: low average frame rate, hitching, shader stutter, crashes, input delay or long loading. Requirements are a starting point, not a performance promise. Steam Support explicitly notes that simply meeting system requirements does not mean you will have high FPS or strong in-game performance.
- Remove common PC bottlenecks. Close unnecessary applications, free memory, install current graphics drivers, choose a sensible display resolution and adjust video options. Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify what helped.
- Check whether a console edition exists. Verify the exact game, edition, region and current store availability. Then look for current official notes or independent testing for that game on the specific console. A PC requirements page cannot establish how the console version performs.
- Check cloud gaming. Search the service’s live catalog, confirm that your device is supported, and test the network path to the service. Cloud gaming removes local rendering from your machine but introduces service, catalog and connection dependencies.
- Investigate patches before waiting. Read the developer’s official patch notes, known-issue tracker and announcements. Wait when a dated or clearly described fix is being evaluated; do not assume that a patch is planned merely because performance is poor.
This order gives the least expensive and most reversible changes priority. It also prevents a common mistake: buying another platform when a driver, memory or graphics-setting problem is the actual cause.
How can I troubleshoot the PC version before changing platforms?
Steam Support recommends a practical sequence because performance varies across hardware and software combinations. Work through these checks while keeping notes about the setting, scene and result.

1. Compare your hardware with the game’s requirements
Open the game’s store or support page and compare your processor, graphics card, system memory and operating-system requirements with the listed minimum and recommended specifications. Check free storage as well, because a nearly full drive can complicate updates and shader-cache work. Treat “minimum” as a launch threshold rather than a promise of a stable frame rate.
2. Eliminate background resource pressure
Close browsers with many tabs, launchers, recording tools and other applications you do not need while playing. In the operating system’s task manager or equivalent monitor, look for sustained CPU, GPU, memory or disk use from another process. Freeing memory can reduce paging and hitching, but it cannot repair inefficient game code.
3. Update graphics drivers and restart
Install the current driver for your GPU from the manufacturer’s supported update channel, then restart the computer. A restart also clears transient resource pressure after a long session or a sequence of updates. If a new driver introduces a problem, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback method rather than repeatedly changing unrelated game settings.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute4. Use an appropriate resolution
Resolution has a direct effect on the number of pixels the GPU must render. If the game is running at a monitor’s maximum resolution, test a lower in-game resolution or a supported resolution scale. Compare the same demanding scene before and after; a lower resolution that barely changes frame rate suggests the bottleneck may be the CPU, streaming system or game engine instead.
5. Reduce the settings that cost the most
Start with options such as shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, view distance, crowd density and anti-aliasing. Lower presets are not automatically the best answer: change individual options when possible, preserving texture quality if the GPU has enough video memory. Apply the changes, reload the affected area and test for several minutes because some stutters appear only while assets stream.

6. Separate frame-rate problems from other failures
- Low frame rate throughout a scene: lower resolution and GPU-heavy effects, then check whether the GPU is fully loaded.
- Short freezes while moving through the world: monitor memory and disk activity, close background programs and allow shader or asset processing to finish after updates.
- Crashes or rendering errors: verify that the driver and operating system meet the game’s support requirements, and record the exact error for the developer’s support channel.
- Input delay during otherwise smooth play: test a local frame-rate cap and different display modes, then compare with a wired controller or mouse connection if available.
These symptoms can overlap, so change one variable at a time. If the same severe issue remains after requirements, resource, driver, resolution and graphics checks, a platform change or a developer fix becomes more reasonable.
What should I check on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck users should treat compatibility status and system software as additional variables. Valve’s categories are not frame-rate guarantees, but they are a useful first filter.
Read the compatibility category
- Verified: the game works by default with the expected controls and configuration.
- Playable: the game works but may require manual configuration, such as an on-screen keyboard or a graphics adjustment.
- Unsupported: Valve has identified a problem that prevents normal play.
- Unknown: the game has not been tested by Valve.
Apply the standard checks
- Install available SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck.
- Check the game’s Deck Verified status and read any listed notes.
- For Steam games, consider trying a different Proton version when the game’s support information or community reports point to a compatibility issue.
- Lower resolution, texture, shadow and effect settings if the game is close to playable but unstable.
- Retest in the same scene after each change; handheld thermal and power limits can make a setting that works at the start of a session fail later.
Microsoft’s documented Xbox Cloud Gaming setup for Steam Deck uses a community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak. Microsoft says it does not actively maintain that Flatpak and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS. The instructions are intended for enthusiasts comfortable making system modifications, so this route is not equivalent to a fully supported native Deck application.
Is a console edition automatically better optimized?
No. A console version may offer a more controlled hardware target, but the PC requirements page does not prove that its console counterpart runs well. Judge the exact game and edition using current performance information, not the assumption that a console port must be smooth.
Confirm that the game is actually available
Check the publisher’s current platform list and the console store for the edition you would buy. Distinguish a native current-generation release from backward compatibility, a streaming version or a differently titled edition. Availability can vary by country and can change when licenses or subscriptions change.

Look for game-specific evidence
Prioritize the developer’s patch notes, technical support notices and performance modes for that game. Independent testing can help when it identifies resolution targets, frame-rate behavior, crashes and the patch version tested. Make sure the date and platform match your planned purchase; a launch review may not describe the current build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAccount for the cost and trade-off
A console route may require new hardware and a separate game purchase. It can also trade visual settings and upgrade flexibility for a fixed configuration. The right comparison is the total cost and expected experience for this particular game, not a general PC-versus-console claim.
When is cloud gaming the better choice?
Cloud gaming is most attractive when your local PC cannot render the game acceptably, the service currently includes it, and your connection to the service is stable. The remote server runs the game and streams video to your device, so local GPU performance matters less; network quality and service availability matter more.
Verify the catalog before subscribing
Search the cloud provider’s live catalog for the exact title, edition and region. Catalogs are not permanent, and a game that appears in a search result may be unavailable on your plan or platform. Check whether the service requires a separate game license, a subscription tier or a supported storefront account.
Check device support
Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming guide lists Xbox One and later, Windows PCs, Mac computers, Chromebooks, supported gaming handhelds, Steam Deck in beta and Android phones and tablets. Access can be through an app or a browser depending on the platform, and Microsoft’s list is subject to change. Confirm the current requirements for your device before paying.

Measure the network path
For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA publishes these service targets:
| Streaming target | Published bandwidth |
|---|---|
| HD up to 60 frames per second | 15 Mbps |
| Full HD at 60 frames per second | 25 Mbps |
| Ultra-wide QHD or QHD at 120 frames per second | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 frames per second | 45 Mbps |
NVIDIA also calls for less than 80 milliseconds of latency to an NVIDIA data center. These are GeForce NOW service requirements, not universal guarantees: congestion, Wi-Fi interference, routing, data caps and household traffic can still affect image quality and control response.
Prefer a stable connection over a headline speed
NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If you use Wi-Fi, play near the access point, reduce competing traffic and test at the time you normally play. An Ethernet cable can remove wireless interference, but it cannot fix a distant or congested route to the cloud provider.
Understand the trade-off
- Advantages: little local rendering work, access from more device types and no need to tune the game’s PC graphics settings.
- Costs: a subscription or separate license may be required, the title can leave the catalog, and a weak network can cause blur, stalls or input delay.
- Practical limit: cloud streaming does not change the game’s own bugs. It only moves execution to the provider’s hardware, whose server build and patch state may differ from your local installation.
Should I wait for a patch?
Wait only when there is evidence that the developer is addressing your specific problem. A badly optimized release does not create an automatic patch schedule, and even a promised fix may target one platform, scene or crash rather than overall frame rate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What evidence is strong enough?
- An official patch note names the game’s performance issue, affected hardware or platform and the change made.
- A developer-known-issues page lists the symptom and gives a status such as investigating, fix scheduled or fixed in a named build.
- An official announcement identifies a release date or test period and explains which version receives the change.
What should you record before waiting?
Write down the game version, operating system, GPU driver, graphics settings, save location and the exact scene or action that fails. This lets you compare the same conditions after an update and report a reproducible issue if the problem remains.

How do you avoid waiting indefinitely?
Set your own review point based on the developer’s stated date or the next announced patch, then reassess. If no official communication exists, treat waiting as an uncertain option and use the PC troubleshooting, console or cloud checks instead. Do not present forum speculation as a commitment from the developer.
Which option fits each situation?
The following framework keeps the decision tied to evidence rather than platform preference.
| Option | Best fit when | Main checks | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep playing on PC after troubleshooting | The game is close to acceptable and settings or system configuration may be the cause. | Requirements, background processes, drivers, resolution, graphics settings and memory pressure. | You may need lower visual quality, and results vary by machine. |
| Console edition | The game is available on a console you own or are willing to buy. | Exact edition, current platform availability, game-specific performance and patch state. | New hardware or a separate game purchase may be needed; PC requirements do not establish console performance. |
| Cloud gaming | The service supports the game and you have a compatible device and good network path. | Current catalog, device support, bandwidth, latency, data caps and subscription terms. | Streaming quality depends on network conditions and service availability. |
| Wait for patches | Official developer communications indicate a relevant fix is planned, or a recent patch is being evaluated. | Official patch notes, known-issue tracker, date, affected platform and reported fix. | Timing and outcome are uncertain; improvement should not be promised without evidence. |
How can I make the final decision without guessing?
Use a simple evidence score rather than a platform slogan. Mark each candidate as confirmed, uncertain or ruled out.
- PC: requirements checked, drivers current, background load controlled, and a repeatable settings test completed.
- Console: exact edition available, current performance evidence found, and total hardware-plus-game cost acceptable.
- Cloud: title present in the current catalog, device supported, measured latency below the provider’s target and bandwidth suitable for your chosen stream.
- Patch: official communication names a relevant fix and gives enough timing information to justify waiting.
If only the PC path is confirmed, keep troubleshooting and report reproducible issues. If a console has strong game-specific evidence and you already own it, that is usually the lowest-friction alternative. If your hardware is the limitation but your network is excellent, cloud gaming can be a practical workaround. If the developer has made no commitment, waiting is a gamble rather than a recommendation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use cloud gaming on a phone or tablet?
Some services support mobile devices, but the exact operating-system version, browser or app, controller requirement and regional availability can change. Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming device list includes Android phones and tablets; verify the live requirements before subscribing.
Does a Steam Deck compatibility label predict frame rate?
No. Verified means the game works by default with the expected controls, while Playable may require manual changes; neither category promises a particular frame rate. Unknown means Valve has not tested the title, so you need current game-specific reports.
Will a console purchase keep my PC save files?
That depends on the game’s cross-save or account-sync policy, not on the fact that both versions share a title. Check the publisher’s support documentation for the exact game and platform before assuming progress transfers.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a faster internet plan fix every cloud-gaming problem?
No. Bandwidth is only one factor; latency to the provider, routing, Wi-Fi interference, congestion and data caps also affect streaming. A wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi may improve stability, but it cannot correct a catalog, service or game-side issue.
