AirVPN has the clearest documented option for keeping reserved ports, Proton VPN has port forwarding on paid plans but usually changes the port when you reconnect, and PIA offers it only on supported server locations. Mullvad is not an option for this feature: it disabled new forwarded ports on May 29, 2023. Which VPN fits depends on whether you need a stable port, a particular server location, or support for your operating system and app—not on a universal speed or privacy ranking.
What port forwarding does—and when you need it
A VPN’s firewall typically blocks unsolicited inbound connections. Port forwarding creates a route through that firewall so incoming traffic on a selected port can reach an application on your device. It can help a peer-to-peer client receive connections or seed files, and it can provide a way to reach a self-hosted service behind the VPN. Proton VPN describes possible gaming benefits too, but the provider documentation cited here does not establish a measured performance improvement.
For remote access to a home server or computer, a VPN provider’s port forwarding is only one part of the setup: the service must be listening on the forwarded port, and the provider must support forwarding on the server you use. PIA addresses the related use case in its remote-access support article.

How to choose between the supported options
Choose based on your app and operating system
Proton VPN’s cited guide documents forwarding in its Windows, macOS, and Linux GUI apps. It also documents manual OpenVPN and WireGuard setup, but says forwarding cannot be used at the same time as moderate (Type 2) NAT. For AirVPN or PIA, confirm that the app and server combination you plan to use supports the feature; the available PIA guide establishes only its supported-location restriction.
Decide whether the port must stay the same
Proton says its assigned port usually changes when you reconnect. If your application needs a specific incoming port, you may need to update its listening-port setting after reconnecting. AirVPN documents account-associated reservations while a valid subscription is in force. PIA’s cited support material does not establish how long its forwarded ports persist.

Check server location, port count, and mapping needs
PIA’s feature is limited to supported locations, and the cited guide does not provide a complete current location list. Proton requires a P2P-marked server for the documented setup. AirVPN lets users reserve up to five ports at once, requires remote ports of 2048 or higher, and allows a remote port to map to a different local port. Choose only after confirming the relevant server is available in a geography you can use.
Set up and troubleshoot a forwarded port
The exact setup steps vary by provider and application. Once forwarding is enabled, check each part of the path rather than relying on a port checker alone:

- Connect to a server eligible for forwarding—for Proton, one marked for P2P.
- Find the assigned or reserved port in the provider app or account settings.
- Set the application’s listening or incoming port to match the forwarded port. If Proton assigns a new port after reconnecting, update the application setting.
- Keep the application running and listening while you test connectivity. A port checker can report closed or filtered when no application is listening, even if forwarding is enabled.
A checker’s result alone does not prove a service is configured correctly or that it is safe to expose. Verify the port and server details in the provider’s current documentation and the application’s settings.
Security considerations and provider-specific cautions
Forwarding makes an application reachable from outside the VPN tunnel on the selected port. The exposure depends on that application: a file-sharing client may expose shared files, while a poorly secured remote-access service could allow broader control. Use a trusted, maintained application and avoid forwarding ports you do not need. Proton’s security guidance discusses these application-specific risks.

AirVPN warns that a user cannot reach a listening service through the same VPN server’s exit IP from the machine running the service, or from another machine connected to that same VPN server. It also advises against forwarding the same service ports on the home router while connected through AirVPN, citing possible correlation attacks and unencrypted packets sent outside the tunnel. These are AirVPN’s cautions for the described setup, not universal rules for every provider or network.
What to verify before subscribing
- Whether your operating system, VPN app, and intended server support port forwarding.
- Whether the port is random, persistent, or reserved, and what happens after reconnecting.
- How many ports you can use and whether the remote and local port numbers can differ.
- Whether the service is listening during a connectivity check and what that service exposes.
Feature terms and eligible locations can change. Confirm current details in the providers’ official support pages before relying on them.
