NordVPN is the strongest all-round starting point for Spain in 2026, while IPVanish is a fast alternative and Proton VPN is a good choice when privacy policy and open-source technology matter most. Independent 2026 comparisons also measured strong speeds from Hotspot Shield, Private Internet Access and CyberGhost. The right pick depends on whether you need a Spanish IP address, reliable access to a particular streaming service, protection on public Wi-Fi, many simultaneous devices or the lowest long-term cost.
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server and replaces your normal public IP address with the server’s address. That can reduce exposure on airport, hotel and café Wi-Fi, help you appear to be connecting from Spain while abroad, or let you test how a Spanish service behaves from another country. It does not make illegal activity lawful, guarantee anonymity or defeat every streaming block.
Which VPN is best for Spain in 2026?
For most readers, begin with NordVPN, then compare IPVanish and Proton VPN against your own city, devices and services. Security.org’s October 12, 2026 comparison gave NordVPN a 9.7/10 security score and reported an average download speed of 220 Mbps. IPVanish scored 9.3/10 and averaged 229 Mbps. A separate September 1, 2026 guide selected Proton VPN after testing in several Spanish cities, so it deserves consideration when privacy design is your priority.

What should you check before choosing a Spanish VPN?
Do not choose on speed alone. Check the following in this order.
Privacy policy and independent verification
Read the current privacy policy and identify what connection, diagnostic and payment data is retained, for how long and under which legal jurisdiction. Independent audits, transparency reports or claims tested in court are more useful than an unqualified “no logs” slogan. A VPN provider can still see metadata while your traffic passes through its servers, so trust and accountability matter.
Spanish exit locations
Confirm that the service currently offers a Spanish exit IP and identify the city if that matters. The 2026 comparison listed Madrid and Barcelona for NordVPN, Madrid and Valencia for IPVanish, and Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia for CyberGhost. Server lists can change; an app’s current location list is the authoritative check.
Streaming compatibility
Test the exact service you pay for. RTVE, Movistar Plus+ and other platforms can change licensing rules, block known VPN addresses or require account and payment details from a particular country. A Spanish IP alone does not guarantee playback, and free VPN addresses are commonly blocked.

Speed and latency
Use the same protocol, server city and test website when comparing providers. Download speed affects large files and video quality; latency matters more for video calls, cloud desktops and online games. A nearby Spanish server is usually a better first test for a Spain-based user, while a server near your physical location may be faster when you are traveling outside Spain.
Security controls
- A kill switch that stops traffic if the encrypted tunnel drops.
- Modern protocols such as WireGuard or an equivalently maintained option.
- Strong encryption and protection against DNS leaks.
- Split tunneling when a local banking or work app must bypass the VPN.
- Tracker, phishing or malicious-site blocking, if included and configurable.
- Automatic updates and clear support documentation.
Practical terms
Compare the number of simultaneous connections, supported operating systems, router support, customer-service channels, money-back period and renewal price. A low introductory rate can become expensive at renewal, while a device limit can force a family to buy a second subscription.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs using a VPN legal in Spain?
Using a VPN for lawful privacy and security is generally legal in Spain. Spanish government consumer guidance describes a VPN as a tool that creates a secure internet connection and protects data while browsing. That permission does not legalize fraud, copyright infringement, unauthorized access or any other prohibited conduct.
Spain’s consumer information on open internet access explains that an internet provider may block, slow or deny content only for legal obligations, network security or exceptional congestion. This is a network-neutrality explanation, not a blanket authorization to bypass a service’s contract or licensing terms. Read the terms of the site you use, especially for streaming and workplace systems.
How does a VPN protect you on public Wi-Fi in Spain?
On an airport, hotel, train or café network, the VPN encrypts traffic from your device to the VPN server, making casual interception of that link much harder. Andalucía’s public guidance specifically advises trying a VPN when using public Wi-Fi and recommends downloading programs and apps only from official websites.

A VPN does not protect you from a fake login page, malware you install yourself, a compromised account or data you voluntarily give to a website. Keep your operating system, browser and security software updated, use multifactor authentication and verify the network name with staff.

- Install the VPN app before leaving home, using the provider’s official site or your device’s official app store.
- Sign in and enable the kill switch and automatic connection on untrusted networks.
- Connect before opening email, banking or work applications.
- Check that the app reports an active tunnel and that your public IP has changed.
- Disconnect when you return to a trusted network if local services stop working.
How do I set up a VPN on Windows, macOS, Android or iPhone?
Provider apps are usually simpler than manual configuration because they install certificates, protocols and leak protection for you. The labels differ slightly by version, but the workflow is consistent.
- Create an account and install the current app from the provider’s official download page or the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in, review diagnostic-data choices and allow the VPN profile when the operating system asks.
- Open Settings or Preferences, select a protocol. Start with the provider’s recommended modern protocol; switch only if a network blocks it or performance is poor.
- Turn on Kill switch, Auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi and DNS-leak protection where offered.
- Choose Spain, then a city such as Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia when available, and press Connect.
- Verify the tunnel in the app. Visit a reputable IP-checking page and run a DNS-leak test before handling sensitive work.
For a router, follow the provider’s exact firmware instructions and confirm whether the router supports the required protocol. Router installation protects devices that cannot run an app, but it can reduce available bandwidth for every device and makes split tunneling more complicated.
How can I use a VPN with RTVE, Movistar Plus+ and other Spanish streaming services?
Connect to a Spanish server, open the service in a private browser window or restart its app, and test the program you are entitled to watch. If playback fails, the service may have detected the VPN address, may require a Spanish account or may enforce rights restrictions that a VPN cannot change.
When a stream is blocked
- Check that your subscription and location rights cover the program.
- Try another Spanish city offered by the same provider.
- Clear the service’s cookies and restart the app; some apps cache the previous location.
- Disable split tunneling for the streaming app so it uses the VPN tunnel.
- Contact the VPN’s support team and the streaming service rather than repeatedly changing servers.
Do not assume that a free VPN is a safe workaround. Free services often have crowded addresses, weaker support and a higher chance of being blocked; some also monetize usage data. A paid plan is not a guarantee either, because streaming providers can block new address ranges at any time.

What speeds can I realistically expect?
The published 2026 measurements ranged from 212 Mbps for Proton VPN to 242 Mbps for Hotspot Shield, with CyberGhost at 226 Mbps, IPVanish at 229 Mbps, NordVPN at 220 Mbps and Private Internet Access at 216 Mbps. Those averages came from Security.org’s testing conditions and are not a universal ranking for every Spanish ISP, mobile network or device.
To make a useful home test, first record your normal speed without a VPN. Then connect to the nearest Spanish server, repeat the test three times at the same hour and compare latency as well as download speed. Repeat on a second city and protocol. If only one server is slow, change server; if every server is slow, check Wi-Fi interference, background downloads and the app’s protocol setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What problems do VPN users in Spain commonly encounter?
Websites show the wrong country
Clear cookies, reconnect and check for DNS or IPv6 leaks. If the site still sees your home country, its app may use location services, GPS or an account country rather than the IP address.
Banking or government sites reject the connection
Some financial and public-sector systems treat VPN addresses as higher risk. Temporarily use split tunneling or disconnect only for that trusted service, then reconnect before using public Wi-Fi. Never disable the kill switch on an unknown network simply to make a page load.

Cloud storage or work software breaks
Catalonia’s cybersecurity guidance warns that VPNs can add latency and cause cloud or compatibility problems. Select a closer server, use split tunneling for the affected application, or ask your employer which VPN and access route it supports.

Calls or games lag
Choose a nearby server, a faster modern protocol and a wired or strong 5 GHz connection. If latency remains unacceptable, bypass the VPN for that real-time application only when the network is trusted and the activity does not require the VPN’s location.
The connection drops
Update the app, switch protocol, try another server and confirm that the kill switch is behaving as intended. On restrictive hotel or workplace networks, captive-portal sign-in may need to be completed before the VPN can connect.
Which VPN is best for different Spain use cases?
| Your priority | Most sensible starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| General privacy and travel | NordVPN | Current privacy policy, Spanish city availability, device limit and renewal price |
| High measured throughput | IPVanish | Performance from your ISP, latency to the required service and support quality |
| Privacy-focused design | Proton VPN | Current plan features, Spanish exits and the protocol that works on your network |
| Lowest listed monthly figure | Private Internet Access | Whether the $2.03 figure is tied to a long-term promotion and what renewal costs |
| Video-heavy use | Hotspot Shield or CyberGhost | Streaming compatibility, data limits, server load and refund terms |
These are starting points, not endorsements that override your own tests. A provider with excellent national averages can still perform poorly on your particular route to a Spanish service.

How should I maintain a VPN safely?
- Install app and operating-system updates promptly.
- Review permissions after major updates, especially location and local-network access.
- Recheck the privacy policy and subscription renewal notice before each renewal.
- Remove old VPN profiles when changing providers to prevent routing conflicts.
- Keep a non-VPN fallback for emergency access to trusted banking, work or government services.
- Do not share one account beyond the provider’s permitted device or household terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VPN give me a Spanish IP address while I am abroad?
Yes, if the provider operates a Spanish exit server. Connect to Spain in the app and verify the resulting IP, but remember that websites may also use account, GPS, payment or device signals.
Will a VPN reduce my internet speed in Spain?
It can, because traffic takes an additional encrypted route. The effect varies with server distance, congestion, protocol and your base connection; measure your normal line and VPN connection under the same conditions.
Do I need a VPN on my home fiber connection?
Home networks are generally less exposed than public hotspots, but a VPN can still hide your public IP from sites and your traffic contents from the local network operator. It cannot replace secure passwords, updates or device-level malware protection.
Can I install one VPN subscription on a router and phones?
Often, but the allowed number of simultaneous connections and router support depend on the plan. Router-based connections may count as one connection or may require manual configuration, so check the provider’s current terms before buying.
