Short answer: a VPN is not a reliable way to stop Sky Broadband throttling. Sky currently describes its broadband packages as unlimited and says products on sale are not subject to traffic management. Sky Broadband Connect is the specific exception identified in its network-management guidance: customers share available capacity, so speeds can dip at busy weekday evenings and weekends. A VPN can still be worthwhile on a Sky connection for privacy on public Wi-Fi, secure access to a workplace network, or protection when travelling, but it adds another route between you and the internet.
The four services below are a UK-market shortlist rather than a Sky-specific speed ranking. No published test establishes that any one VPN is fastest or most reliable on a Sky line. Choose by protocol support, kill-switch behaviour, privacy evidence, device and router compatibility, and the full subscription cost—not by a promise to defeat congestion.
Can a VPN stop Sky throttling my broadband?
No. A VPN cannot increase the capacity of your Sky line, repair a fault, improve weak Wi-Fi, remove local congestion, or make a distant VPN server faster. It encrypts traffic and sends it through a VPN server, which can add latency or reduce throughput.
Sky’s current usage guidance says its broadband packages are unlimited and that products currently on sale are not subject to traffic management. Sky separately identifies Sky Broadband Connect as subject to a network-management policy in which available bandwidth is shared among customers online at the same time. That can mean lower speeds during weekday evenings and weekends, but it is a package-specific capacity policy rather than evidence that every Sky customer is being throttled.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before buying a VPN, identify the exact package on your bill or in your Sky account. If you have a standard current package, a VPN is unlikely to solve a speed complaint. If you have Sky Broadband Connect, busy-period slowdowns may reflect shared capacity that a VPN cannot remove.
Which four VPNs are worth comparing for Sky customers in 2026?
The shortlist combines the providers that appear in two current UK market guides while omitting any claim of Sky-line testing. Top10VPN’s UK guide, updated 8 September 2026 after reporting tests of 59 services, lists NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and PrivadoVPN. Tom’s Guide’s UK list, updated 12 February 2026, names NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access. Because the fourth-place choice differs, there is no universally agreed fourth provider.
For a four-service comparison that reflects both lists without treating either as an authority on Sky performance, this article covers NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access. The ranking context is general UK VPN coverage; it does not measure performance over a Sky Broadband connection.

| NordVPN | Named by both UK guides | NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec; automatic kill switch documented by the provider | Not stated |
| ExpressVPN | Named by both UK guides | Not stated in the available material | Not stated |
| Proton VPN | Named by both UK guides | DNS-leak protection, kill switch and always-on VPN; provider describes a no-logs policy and an audit | Not stated |
| PrivadoVPN | Named in Top10VPN’s UK guide | Not stated in the available material | Not stated |
| Private Internet Access | Named in Tom’s Guide’s UK list | Not stated in the available material | Not stated |
“Not stated” means the cited material does not establish that comparison point; it is not a finding that a provider lacks the feature. Check each provider’s current specifications, supported platforms, server locations, logging explanation and renewal price before subscribing.
What should you compare before choosing a VPN for Sky Broadband?
Use the following checks in order. They distinguish a VPN that fits your privacy or work-access need from one marketed as a cure for an ISP speed problem.
Connection reliability and protocol choice
Protocols determine how the encrypted tunnel is negotiated. A modern, well-supported protocol may connect quickly, while OpenVPN can be useful when compatibility matters. NordVPN documents NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec. The provider descriptions do not prove which protocol will be fastest on your particular Sky line, so test more than one when the application allows it.
Kill switch and leak controls
A kill switch blocks traffic when the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that an application continues over the ordinary Sky connection. Proton VPN documents DNS-leak protection, a kill switch and an always-on VPN. NordVPN documents an automatic kill switch. Confirm whether the setting applies system-wide or only to selected applications, and test it before relying on it for work.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Privacy policy and audit evidence
Read the provider’s current logging explanation and look for a clearly described independent audit. Proton VPN’s provider material describes a no-logs policy and an audit. A policy or audit is evidence about stated controls, not a guarantee of anonymity: your account, payment method, browser fingerprint and the websites you visit can still identify you.
Device, router and simultaneous-use support
Count the devices you actually use: phones, computers, tablets, streaming boxes and any router installation. Device limits and router support vary by plan and provider, and the available evidence does not establish a common limit for these four services. A router-compatible VPN can cover devices that cannot run an app, but router installation is optional; you can use an app on one device without replacing the Sky Hub.
Total first-term and renewal cost
Promotional prices, billing intervals, tax treatment and renewal rates change. Compare the full amount due for the first term with the recurring renewal price, cancellation rules and refund window. No current price was established for this comparison, so do not treat an advertised introductory figure as the long-term cost.
How do the four shortlisted VPNs differ?
NordVPN
NordVPN is included by both cited UK guides and has the broadest documented protocol set in the available material: NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec. It also documents an automatic kill switch. That combination gives you options when a Sky connection, workplace firewall or public network behaves differently across protocols.
Choose NordVPN if protocol flexibility and a documented automatic kill switch are priorities. Do not interpret its appearance in UK rankings as proof of a speed advantage on Sky; no Sky-specific measurement is established here. Check current device limits, router instructions, server availability in the United Kingdom and renewal price on the provider’s own pages.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN appears in both UK guides, making it one of the services with the most consistent shortlist presence. The available material does not specify a protocol, kill-switch implementation, device limit, router model support or current price for this article.
It is therefore best assessed by reading its current technical documentation and testing the application during the refund period, if one is offered. Test on the same Sky device and connection you normally use, and record performance with the VPN off before deciding that a slower result is acceptable.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN appears in both UK guides. Its provider documentation describes DNS-leak protection, a kill switch and an always-on VPN, as well as a no-logs policy and an audit. DNS protection helps keep name-resolution requests inside the intended tunnel; always-on mode is designed to reconnect or maintain the tunnel rather than silently falling back to an ordinary connection.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Proton VPN when leak controls and the provider’s published privacy evidence matter more than an unverified speed claim. Confirm how always-on mode interacts with local-network access, printers and workplace software before enabling it on every device.
PrivadoVPN
PrivadoVPN is the fourth provider in Top10VPN’s UK guide. The available material does not establish its protocol selection, kill-switch behaviour, audit status, device limit, router support or current UK price, so those items must be checked directly before purchase.
Its inclusion illustrates why a shortlist should state its method. One guide’s fourth choice is not automatically a universal recommendation, and neither guide tested the service over a named Sky package.
Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access is the fourth provider in Tom’s Guide’s UK list. The available material does not provide a feature specification or Sky-specific result for it. Treat the listing as market context, then verify current privacy documentation, supported protocols, device policy, router instructions and renewal terms.
How can I test whether Sky or the VPN is causing slow speeds?
Establish a controlled baseline before changing providers or blaming throttling. The same device, location and connection should be used for every comparison.
- Identify the package. Check whether your account says Sky Broadband Connect or another current package. Record the time of day and whether the slowdown occurs only on weekday evenings or weekends.
- Use a wired baseline. Connect a computer to the Sky Hub by Ethernet where possible. Disable the VPN, close downloads and cloud synchronisation, and run several tests at the same time of day. Wi-Fi signal quality can otherwise be mistaken for an ISP problem.
- Repeat over multiple periods. A single result cannot separate congestion from a temporary server, device or household-load issue. Note the download rate, upload rate, latency and the service or website being tested.
- Connect the VPN nearby. Select a UK endpoint or the provider’s automatic location, then repeat the same tests. Compare the result with the wired, VPN-off baseline rather than with an advertised maximum.
- Change one variable. If the result is poor, try another UK server and a different supported protocol. Do not change the device, Wi-Fi band and server at the same time; you will not know which change mattered.
- Check the endpoint. A workplace VPN can be slow because traffic passes through the employer’s network and servers. Sky says employer-side server load or data limits can affect performance, and an employer may restrict VPN use.
- Record the pattern. If only one website or app fails while the VPN is active, that points to a compatibility or destination issue rather than proof of Sky throttling. If every service is slow with and without the VPN, investigate the line, Hub, Wi-Fi and local congestion.
Why does my VPN work slowly or fail on Sky?
The VPN server or protocol is overloaded
Encryption and an additional network hop introduce processing and distance. A busy remote server can be slower than the direct route. Try a different nearby endpoint and protocol, then compare again with the VPN off.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The workplace network is the bottleneck
When you connect to an employer’s VPN, your traffic may travel through the company’s gateway, security appliances and servers before reaching its destination. Sky specifically notes that this path, employer limits or server load can slow the connection. Your IT team may need to check capacity or permitted use.
A website or app rejects the VPN address
Some services challenge shared VPN addresses or mis-handle location changes. If switching the VPN off makes the site accessible, Sky advises contacting the VPN provider. Do not label that behaviour ISP throttling without testing another VPN server and the direct connection.

A Sky Community employee announcement described a Hub 6 issue affecting some VPN configurations, said it was resolved and included interim MTU advice. That was model- and incident-specific. It does not show that Sky broadly blocks VPNs. If you have a Hub 6 and symptoms began after a firmware or network change, check current Sky support notices before changing MTU values.
Old filtering information is being applied to a current service
A legacy Sky Broadband Buddy manual lists VPN and proxy categories among filtering options. It is old documentation and should not be used to describe current Broadband Shield defaults. Check the current Sky guidance for the account and service you actually use.
How do I set up a VPN with Sky Broadband?
For most households, installing the provider’s app on each device is the least disruptive approach. A whole-home router configuration is optional and depends on supported firmware.
- Choose the service and plan. Confirm the app supports your operating system, the number of devices you need and the provider’s current refund and renewal terms.
- Install from the provider. Download the official application, sign in and allow the requested VPN profile or network extension. Avoid unofficial installers.
- Set safety defaults. Enable the kill switch and DNS-leak protection where offered. Use always-on mode only after confirming that printers, local file shares and required workplace tools still work.
- Select a location. Start with a UK server for ordinary browsing and work access. A nearby location generally gives the shortest route, but actual performance varies with load.
- Test essential services. Open your work applications, banking site, video calls and any smart-home controls. Test with the VPN connected and disconnected so you know how to recover if a service refuses the VPN address.
- Document recovery. Learn the app’s disconnect control and how to pause the kill switch temporarily if your provider’s support team instructs you. Re-enable protections after troubleshooting.
Installing a VPN on a compatible router can protect devices that cannot run an app, but it may reduce available router performance and complicate troubleshooting. Confirm the router’s firmware, provider instructions and supported protocol before attempting it; no specific model or compatibility list is established here.

What should I do if Sky broadband is slow even with the VPN off?
- Reboot the Sky Hub once, then retest over Ethernet.
- Check whether other household devices are downloading, backing up photos or streaming high-resolution video.
- Test close to the Hub and on Ethernet to separate Wi-Fi coverage from line performance.
- Compare results at quiet and busy times and keep a dated log.
- Check Sky’s service-status information and run the provider’s line diagnostics.
- Contact Sky if the wired baseline remains materially below the package’s expected service or if the connection drops.
A VPN should be disconnected while diagnosing the broadband line. Otherwise, an overloaded VPN server or protocol can obscure the underlying Sky result.

Is a VPN worth paying for on a Sky connection?
It can be, when the objective is privacy on untrusted networks, secure access to a workplace system or consistent protection while travelling. It is not good value if the only goal is to cure evening congestion, a faulty line or weak Wi-Fi. Those problems require package, network, equipment or support action rather than a different VPN server.
Use a short trial or refund period to test the locations and protocols you need. Compare the total first-term charge with the renewal amount, and cancel before renewal if the service does not meet your device, work-access or privacy requirements. No provider in this shortlist has a published Sky-specific speed guarantee.
What are the key limitations of this shortlist?
- The two UK guides use different fourth-place providers, so the list is a reasoned market shortlist, not an official ranking.
- The reported Top10VPN guide covered 59 services, but that testing does not establish results on a Sky line or package.
- Provider feature descriptions are not independent guarantees of speed, uptime or anonymity.
- Prices, server inventories, supported apps, device limits and router instructions can change; verify them before subscribing.
- Sky policy differs by package, and Sky Broadband Connect’s shared-bandwidth language should not be generalized to every customer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Sky know that I am using a VPN?
Sky can generally see that an encrypted connection to a VPN service exists, even though the VPN is intended to hide the contents of that traffic from the broadband provider. A VPN therefore changes who can observe destinations and metadata; it does not make the connection invisible or guarantee anonymity.
Can I use a VPN on the Sky Hub without installing apps?
Only if the particular Hub firmware and VPN service support a compatible router configuration. App-based installation on individual computers and phones is usually simpler; router support, setup steps and performance limits must be verified for the exact hardware.
Will a VPN increase latency for gaming and video calls?
It can, because packets travel through an additional encrypted server and may take a longer route. Choose a nearby endpoint, compare latency with the VPN off, and disable the tunnel for applications that require the lowest possible delay if your privacy policy allows.
Are free VPNs suitable for Sky Broadband?
A free service may impose data, server, speed or device limits, and its privacy and advertising practices need careful review. For work access or always-on protection, compare the provider’s logging explanation, leak controls and support terms rather than choosing solely on price.
