The best VPN for a foldable phone depends on what you value, not on the hinge. Android foldables use the same VPN framework as other Android phones, so a service with a dependable Android app, kill switch, modern protocols and useful split tunneling will work on a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip. Mullvad is the strongest privacy-first choice; Windscribe offers the most flexible low-cost plan; IVPN is practical for short periods; and Proton VPN Free is the best starting point at no cost. ExpressVPN and NordVPN are better fits when simple setup, streaming or polished mobile features matter. Streaming access, prices and app behavior can change by country and date, so treat every provider claim as time- and region-dependent.

Does a VPN work on a foldable phone?

Yes. A foldable phone uses Android’s standard VPN stack; the hinge, inner display and cover display do not require a special protocol or a foldable-specific app. Android 7.0 (API level 24) and later supports always-on VPN, an option to block traffic outside the tunnel, and per-app allowlists or disallowlists.

That means a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip can protect traffic from apps on either screen in exactly the same way as a conventional Android handset. The larger inner display does make split tunneling and multitasking easier to manage, but it does not change encryption or routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android’s platform documentation states that it can start a VPN when the device boots and keep it running while the device is on. If you change a per-app allowlist or disallowlist, Android requires a new VPN connection before the change takes effect.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Which VPN is best for a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip?

These are the leading choices for 2026 Android foldables. Ratings and feature descriptions come from current Android/mobile reviews; prices shown are the specific figures reported by those reviews and are not universal promotions.

VPN Best for Android and privacy features Important limitation Price or device note
Mullvad Privacy-first users No email required, WireGuard, kill switch; ranked by RTINGS as its best Android and best privacy VPN. Privacy is prioritized over consistently bypassing streaming blocks. Current price not stated in the cited reviews.
Windscribe Custom low-cost plans WireGuard and OpenVPN; Build-a-Plan lets you select locations and allows unlimited simultaneous connections. Free service has location and data limits. Build-a-Plan was listed at $3 USD per month by RTINGS in 2026 for two locations, unlimited connections and uncapped data.
IVPN Short-term use Kill switch, obfuscation and ad blocking; Standard plan supports up to five devices. Weekly billing is expensive for long-term use compared with a recurring annual commitment elsewhere. $2 USD per week for Standard, according to RTINGS in 2026.
Proton VPN Free Unlimited free data No ads, unlimited data and a kill switch. Fewer locations; RTINGS reports that the free plan does not support OpenVPN. Free plan; paid features and locations vary.
ExpressVPN Simple setup and streaming-focused use Auto-connect on untrusted networks, Android split tunneling, fast connection setup and broad streaming tests in mobile reviews. Streaming results can change with the service, country and time. Current price and device allowance were not stated in the cited material.
NordVPN All-round mobile features AES-256, NordLynx, OpenVPN, NordWhisper, Threat Protection Lite and an Android kill switch. Protocol and streaming availability can differ by network and region. Current price and device allowance were not stated in the cited material.

Why Mullvad is the privacy pick

Mullvad minimizes signup information by not requiring an email address. It uses WireGuard and includes a kill switch, two useful properties on a phone that moves between home Wi-Fi, cellular data and public hotspots. RTINGS places it first for both Android and privacy. Choose it when reducing account data and maintaining a straightforward encrypted tunnel matter more than accessing every streaming catalog.

When Windscribe makes more sense

Windscribe’s Build-a-Plan is useful if you need only two locations rather than a large global list. RTINGS’ 2026 listing describes a $3 monthly plan with those two selected locations, uncapped data and unlimited simultaneous connections. The free tier is more restricted, so check its current location and data allowances before relying on it as your only service.

Who should choose IVPN

IVPN is aimed at temporary needs such as a trip, conference or short project. The Standard plan was listed at $2 per week in RTINGS’ 2026 review and supports up to five devices, with a kill switch, obfuscation and ad blocking. For year-round use, calculate the weekly total rather than assuming a short-term price is economical.

What Proton VPN Free can and cannot do

Proton VPN Free removes two common free-service problems: it has unlimited data and no advertising, and it includes a kill switch. Its smaller location selection can increase congestion or make a nearby server unavailable. RTINGS also reports no OpenVPN support on the free plan, so users who specifically require OpenVPN should check the current plan documentation before installing.

When ExpressVPN or NordVPN is the better fit

Mobile reviews describe ExpressVPN as quick to connect, able to auto-connect on untrusted networks and equipped with Android split tunneling. NordVPN adds several protocol choices—NordLynx, OpenVPN and NordWhisper—alongside AES-256, Threat Protection Lite and an Android kill switch. These services are sensible when a polished interface, streaming experiments or multiple protocol options outweigh a minimal-account approach. Neither service can guarantee that a particular streaming catalog will remain reachable.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What should you compare before subscribing?

Look beyond a review ranking. VPN apps, prices and blocking rules change, and the best choice for a privacy-focused user may be inconvenient for someone who needs a particular streaming service.

  • Privacy policy and audits: Read what account information is retained and whether an independent audit or court-tested policy supports the provider’s claims. A marketing statement alone is not an audit.
  • Kill switch and leak behavior: Confirm that the Android app can stop traffic when the tunnel drops. Test DNS and IP behavior yourself, because a kill switch that works on one operating-system version can behave differently after an update.
  • Protocol support: WireGuard generally offers a lightweight modern option. OpenVPN remains useful for compatibility and configuration choices, while proprietary protocols may connect faster on difficult networks. Proton VPN Free’s reported lack of OpenVPN is a plan-specific example.
  • Always-on and lockdown controls: Android can keep a VPN active after boot and block traffic outside it. These controls protect against accidental exposure but can also prevent banking, captive-portal or local-device connections until you temporarily disable them.
  • Split tunneling: Decide whether you need an allowlist (only selected apps use the VPN) or a disallowlist (everything except selected apps uses it). Excluded apps bypass the tunnel completely.
  • Streaming reliability: A provider may work with a service in one country and fail in another, or work one week and be blocked the next. Treat review results as snapshots, not guarantees.
  • Simultaneous connections: Count the foldable, tablet, laptop, television and any family devices that will share the subscription. Windscribe’s cited Build-a-Plan allowance is unlimited; IVPN Standard is up to five; other limits should be checked in the current plan terms.
  • Commitment and refunds: Compare weekly, monthly and annual billing, renewal prices and the refund window. A low introductory rate is not the same as a low recurring price.

What Android foldable models are covered?

Samsung’s 2026 specifications list the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8 as current examples. They run Android 17 with One UI 9 in that table and include 5G and Wi-Fi 7. The Z Fold8 has a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover display; the Z Flip8 has a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch cover display.

Those screen layouts affect convenience rather than VPN compatibility. You can start a connection on the cover screen, open the same app on the inner screen and keep the tunnel active while the phone changes orientation. A VPN still sees one Android device and one set of app-routing rules.

How do you install and secure a VPN on a foldable?

Use the provider’s current Android app from Google Play or its verified download page. The wording of Samsung and Android menus can vary slightly by One UI release, but the process is consistent.

  1. Check the subscription and app version. Confirm that the plan covers Android and that your account allows the number of devices you intend to connect.
  2. Install the app. Search Google Play for the provider’s official listing, check the developer name, and update Android before troubleshooting an older app.
  3. Sign in or create the account. If privacy is your priority, choose a provider whose signup requirements match your expectations; Mullvad, for example, does not require an email according to RTINGS.
  4. Approve the VPN connection request. Android shows a system permission dialog. Read the warning, then approve only the app you installed from a verified source.
  5. Choose a nearby server and connect. A nearby location usually reduces latency. Wait for the Android VPN icon before assuming traffic is protected.
  6. Turn on the app’s kill switch. The label may be “Network Lock,” “Kill switch” or similar. Read whether it blocks all traffic or only traffic while reconnecting.
  7. Configure Android always-on protection when appropriate. On stock Android, open Settings, Network & internet, VPN, select the service and enable Always-on VPN. On Samsung, the equivalent is commonly Settings, Connections, More connection settings, VPN; menu names can differ by One UI version.
  8. Consider lockdown. Android’s “Block connections without VPN” option prevents accidental unprotected traffic but can stop local services and captive-portal sign-in. Enable it only if that trade-off suits your routine.
  9. Test the result. Check the displayed public IP, run a DNS leak test, disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi, switch to cellular data, and confirm that the kill switch behaves as expected.

How does split tunneling work on Samsung foldables?

Split tunneling sends selected apps through the VPN while other apps use the ordinary connection. It is useful when you want a browser or streaming app protected but need a game, banking app, printer, smart-home controller or local-service app to see your normal network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the VPN app and find Settings, Connection or Split tunneling.
  2. Choose an allowlist or disallowlist mode. In allowlist mode, only selected apps use the tunnel; in disallowlist mode, selected apps bypass it.
  3. Add the apps deliberately. On a Fold device, include both the app you use on the cover screen and any companion app that handles links or authentication.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the VPN. Android documentation requires a new VPN connection after changing the per-app list.
  5. Test each app on both displays. An excluded banking app should show your normal network, while the protected browser should show the VPN address.

Do not use split tunneling merely to make a speed complaint disappear. Every excluded app loses the VPN’s encryption and location masking, so record the reason for each exception and remove it when no longer needed.

Can you stream Netflix and other services on a foldable with a VPN?

Sometimes, but no provider can promise permanent catalog access. Streaming platforms identify and block VPN addresses, and the result depends on the country, server, account, app version and date. Mobile reviews report broad streaming tests for some services, while privacy-focused testing places Mullvad behind providers that emphasize reliable unblocking.

For a streaming trial, connect before opening the streaming app, choose a server in the account’s permitted country and clear or restart the app if it cached the previous location. If playback fails, try another server or protocol, then disconnect the VPN to determine whether the service or the network is at fault. Do not assume that a successful test on a Fold8 will remain successful on a Flip8; the phone model is rarely the deciding variable.

What is the best free VPN for an Android foldable?

Proton VPN Free is the strongest free starting point in the cited 2026 comparisons because it offers unlimited data, no ads and a kill switch. Its fewer locations can mean higher latency, and the reported absence of OpenVPN on the free plan limits protocol choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windscribe’s free tier is another option when its available locations and data allowance match your needs. It is not equivalent to the $3 Build-a-Plan listing: that paid plan’s two chosen locations, uncapped data and unlimited simultaneous connections are separate benefits. Avoid any free app that cannot clearly explain its ownership, data practices, protocol and advertising model.

Will a VPN slow down or drain a foldable’s battery?

Encryption and an always-on tunnel add some processing and radio activity, but the available data contains no independent battery or speed test conducted specifically on foldable phones. Results depend more on protocol, server distance, cellular signal, Wi-Fi congestion and the provider’s app than on whether the display folds.

To reduce unnecessary overhead, select a nearby server, use a modern protocol supported by your plan, and avoid reconnecting repeatedly while moving between Wi-Fi and 5G. If battery life changes sharply after installation, compare a full day with the VPN connected and disconnected, then inspect the app’s Android battery usage before changing security settings.

How do you fix common VPN problems on a foldable?

The VPN connects but apps have no internet

  • Disable lockdown temporarily and test a normal web page.
  • Turn off split tunneling and reconnect.
  • Switch from a congested server or proprietary protocol to WireGuard or OpenVPN when the plan supports it.
  • Sign in to a captive Wi-Fi portal with the VPN off, then reconnect.

Banking or local-device apps stop working

Those apps may reject a VPN address or need local-network access. Put only the affected app in the disallowlist, reconnect, and understand that its traffic is then outside the tunnel. Remove the exception when finished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection drops when the phone folds or unfolds

Folding should not terminate an Android VPN. Update the provider app, disable aggressive battery optimization for it, and test both Wi-Fi and cellular handoffs. If the drop occurs only on one network, compare another access point before changing protocols.

A streaming service shows the wrong country

Close and reopen the streaming app, verify the VPN server and account region, and try a different server. If several servers fail, the service may be blocking the provider rather than the foldable itself.

Websites still reveal the normal location

Check the public IP and DNS separately. Reconnect after changing servers, disable split tunneling for the browser, and check whether a browser’s own location permission or a logged-in account is providing location information independent of the VPN.

Which VPN should you buy?

Choose Mullvad when privacy and minimal signup information are the priority. Choose Windscribe when a small number of locations, unlimited connections and a clearly priced custom plan fit your household. Choose IVPN for a short, defined period. Choose Proton VPN Free when unlimited free data matters more than location choice. Choose ExpressVPN or NordVPN when a polished Android experience, streaming experiments or multiple protocol options justify checking their current subscription terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before paying, confirm the provider’s current Android features, simultaneous-device limit, renewal price, refund rules and availability in your country. Then install the app, enable the protections you can live with and test your own Wi-Fi, cellular and streaming routines rather than relying on a permanent ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one VPN account on both the inner and cover screens?

Yes. The screens are two interfaces to the same Android installation, so a single VPN connection covers apps regardless of which display is open. The relevant limit is the provider’s simultaneous-device policy, not the number of screens.

Should I leave a VPN on while making mobile payments?

Usually yes for an untrusted network, provided the payment app works with the VPN address. If a bank blocks the connection, use a narrowly scoped split-tunnel exception rather than disabling protection for every app.

Does a VPN hide my phone’s GPS location?

No. A VPN changes network routing and the public IP address; Android location services can still use GPS, Wi-Fi and nearby-cell data. Review each app’s location permission separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a foldable’s work profile use a different VPN?

Android work profiles are managed separately and an employer may enforce its own VPN or always-on policy. Personal VPN settings cannot override a company management rule, so check with the administrator before installing another service.

What happens if I change VPN providers while always-on is enabled?

Turn off always-on and lockdown for the old profile, remove or disconnect it, install the new provider, and then configure always-on again. Leaving the old profile active can block the new app from connecting or make ordinary traffic appear offline.
