For browser-only protection, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Windscribe, TunnelBear, Browsec, and CyberGhost are the main options worth comparing. The right choice depends less on a universal winner and more on whether you need a simple location switch, free service, browser-security tools, or protection for every application on your device.
The most important limitation is scope: a Chrome VPN extension normally acts as a browser proxy and does not protect other browsers, desktop applications, games, email clients, or device traffic. For whole-device coverage, use a native VPN application instead.
Chrome VPN extensions versus full VPN apps
A VPN browser extension is software that runs inside Chrome and changes how the browser connects through a provider’s proxy or VPN service. Depending on the product, it may mask your IP address, route browser traffic through another location, reduce WebRTC-based exposure, spoof browser location signals, or block ads and trackers.
That is different from installing a VPN application for Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS. A native app can establish device-level coverage, so traffic from other browsers and applications can use the VPN connection as well. ExpressVPN explicitly supports both modes: its Chrome extension can operate as a standalone browser proxy or control the full VPN application when that app is installed. CyberGhost, by contrast, describes its Chrome extension as a limited proxy and recommends its desktop or mobile applications for broader protection.

Therefore, do not interpret a Chrome extension showing Connected as proof that every application on your computer is protected. It generally means that the supported Chrome traffic is using the extension’s connection.
Also, a VPN extension does not make you anonymous. Websites can still recognize logged-in accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, and other identifying signals. Incognito mode does not make you invisible to websites, employers, schools, or internet service providers.
This comparison is based primarily on official Chrome Web Store disclosures and provider documentation. It is a feature-and-use-case comparison, not a laboratory ranking. No independent speed, latency, streaming, leak-test, or reliability testing was available for this guide, so none of the products is presented as objectively fastest, safest, or best for Netflix.

Chrome Web Store user counts, ratings, versions, and update dates change frequently. The figures in the sections below are a research snapshot, not permanent product specifications.
Our picks by use case
NordVPN: best all-around feature set for many Chrome users
NordVPN is the strongest general-purpose pick in this comparison for readers who want more than a basic location switch. Its official Chrome Web Store listing describes IP masking, WebRTC-leak mitigation, Scam and Phishing Protection, unlimited VPN data, and URL exclusions. URL exclusions are useful when a particular site needs to connect normally while the rest of your browser uses the extension.
The listing required Chrome 122 or newer and a NordVPN account or subscription. In the supplied research snapshot, it showed 13 million users, a 4.2 rating from 8.9K ratings, version 5.6.5, and an update date of July 13, 2026.
Choose the NordVPN Chrome extension if you want a mature, widely adopted extension with browser-specific controls and security-oriented features. Do not treat NordVPN’s extension as equivalent to the company’s full-device VPN application: other applications remain outside the extension’s scope unless you install and use the native app.
Surfshark: best for bundled browser-protection tools
Surfshark is a good fit when your goal is broader browser hygiene rather than only changing your apparent location. Its listing describes IP masking alongside ad blocking, tracker blocking, cookie pop-up blocking, malware alerts, and phishing protection. That combination may reduce the number of separate browser extensions you need, although it does not eliminate the need to review permissions and privacy practices.

Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The research snapshot showed 1 million users, a 4.0 rating from 3.6K ratings, version 5.1.0, and an update date of July 17, 2026. Consider the Surfshark Chrome extension if built-in ad, tracker, cookie, malware, and phishing controls matter more to you than a minimal extension interface. The listing’s feature claims should not be converted into a claim that Surfshark is faster or more reliable than the alternatives.
Proton VPN: best documented free-plan option
Proton VPN is the clearest free starting point among the products documented in this comparison. According to its official listing, the free Chrome extension has no usage limitations, displays no ads, does not sell data to third parties, and has no bandwidth or speed restrictions. These are publisher claims, so readers should still review the current listing and privacy disclosure before signing up.
Proton separates free and paid capabilities. The listing identifies paid features including split tunneling, Secure Core, more server locations, and support for multiple browsers or devices. In other words, the free extension may be a practical way to start, but it should not be assumed to include the provider’s entire paid service.
The snapshot showed 2 million users, a 4.2 rating from 3.5K ratings, version 1.3.5, and an update date of June 16, 2026. Select the Proton VPN Chrome extension if you want to try a documented free option before paying. Check which locations and controls are available on the free plan in your region at the time of installation.
ExpressVPN: best for browser proxy mode with a path to full-app control
ExpressVPN stands out because its extension can be used in two different ways. The official listing says it can work as a standalone VPN proxy without the desktop application, or it can control the full ExpressVPN app when that app is installed. That makes it particularly suitable for someone who wants browser-only use today but may later want device-wide coverage.
The extension lists location switching, HTML5 location spoofing, WebRTC blocking, Smart Routing rules, and connection-mode switching. HTML5 location spoofing affects browser location signals; it should not be confused with complete device location control. Smart Routing rules can help decide how particular browser traffic is handled, but they do not automatically extend protection to unrelated applications.
ExpressVPN requires a subscription. The snapshot showed 1 million users, a 4.5 rating from 2.8K ratings, version 8.0.10.1876, and an update date of July 21, 2026. The ExpressVPN Chrome extension is the most logical choice here if the distinction between browser-only proxy mode and full-app VPN control is important to you.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windscribe: best for a clearly stated free data allowance
Windscribe gives free-plan shoppers a concrete limit to compare. Its official Chrome Web Store listing states that the free plan provides 10 GB per month when the user confirms an email address. Pro plans provide unlimited data and access to a larger server network, according to the listing.
The extension also describes IP masking, location spoofing, ad and tracker blocking, and published source code for the browser extension. Published source code can improve transparency, but it is not by itself proof that every part of a service has been independently audited or that the service is risk-free.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The snapshot showed 2 million users, a 4.6 rating from 21K ratings, version 4.2.8, and an update date of May 26, 2026. Choose the Windscribe Chrome extension if a stated 10 GB monthly free allowance is more useful to you than an unspecified or changing free tier. Confirm the email requirement, available locations, and current Pro terms before relying on it for regular use.
TunnelBear: best for simplicity
TunnelBear’s Chrome listing takes a straightforward approach. It presents the extension as lightweight and simple, with browser-traffic encryption, public-Wi-Fi protection, reduced tracking, blocked-site access, and connections to 20 countries. This makes it appealing to users who do not want to configure URL rules, split tunneling, or a large collection of browser-security controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The same listing explicitly directs users to TunnelBear’s Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android apps when they need to encrypt all traffic from the device. That warning is important: the Chrome extension is not a substitute for those apps when you need coverage for other programs.
In the supplied snapshot, TunnelBear had 1 million users, a 4.6 rating from 33.2K ratings, version 4.3.0, and an update date of June 30, 2026. Pick the TunnelBear Chrome extension when a simple browser interface is your priority. The high rating indicates user sentiment in the store, not independently verified security or performance superiority.
Browsec: best for a large, basic free extension
Browsec is aimed at readers who want a familiar, uncomplicated free extension. Its listing describes IP changing, multiple free virtual locations, traffic encryption, and premium access to additional locations and settings. It also has a large installed base in the research snapshot: 8 million users, a 4.5 rating from 39.8K ratings, version 3.93.7, and an update date of July 8, 2026.
There is a privacy qualification that should not be skipped. Browsec’s Chrome Web Store privacy disclosure says the extension handles personally identifiable information. That statement does not, by itself, explain what is collected, why it is collected, how long it is retained, or with whom it may be shared. Read the current disclosure and the provider’s privacy policy before installation, especially if you plan to grant access to all websites.
Recommended Free Tools
The Browsec VPN for Chrome is reasonable for basic free browser use when its available locations meet your needs and you are comfortable with the current data-handling disclosure. Do not use its user count or rating as a substitute for a privacy audit.
CyberGhost: a limited-location option, not a leading privacy-feature pick
CyberGhost’s Chrome extension is the most constrained option in this shortlist. The official listing provides four selectable locations: the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania. That may be enough for a specific browsing need, but it is a poor fit if you need a wide choice of locations.
More importantly, CyberGhost’s listing explicitly warns that the extension does not protect against WebRTC leaks or Flash-based vulnerabilities. It recommends the native desktop or mobile applications for full protection across applications and devices. That makes the extension unsuitable for readers specifically looking for the broadest Chrome privacy feature set.

The snapshot showed 800,000 users, a 3.2 rating from 1.2K ratings, version 10.0.0, and an update date of September 22, 2025. The older date is a freshness caveat, not proof that the extension is unsupported. Check the live listing for current compatibility and maintenance information before installing. CyberGhost is worth considering only if its four locations and limited proxy behavior are sufficient.
How to choose a Chrome VPN extension
- Decide the coverage you actually need. If only Chrome tabs need the connection, an extension may be sufficient. If you need to cover another browser, a game, an email client, or all device traffic, start with a native VPN app instead.
- Compare the free-plan terms. Look for data limits, available locations, bandwidth restrictions, account or email requirements, and which controls are locked behind a paid plan. Proton’s listing states no usage limit for its free extension, while Windscribe states 10 GB per month after email confirmation. Those are materially different offers.
- Look for the specific browser control you need. URL exclusions, Smart Routing, auto-connect, split tunneling, location spoofing, and WebRTC controls are not interchangeable. Only count a feature when the provider explicitly documents it for the Chrome extension.
- Review security extras separately from VPN routing. Ad blocking, tracker blocking, cookie pop-up blocking, malware warnings, and phishing protection can be useful, but they do not automatically mean the extension offers stronger encryption or better anonymity.
- Inspect the privacy disclosure and permissions. Chrome treats extensions as privileged software. An extension may be able to read and change data on websites, and broad access can include sensitive banking or social-media pages. A high user count or store rating is not a security audit.
- Check maintenance signals. Compare the publisher name, version, update date, supported Chrome version, privacy disclosure, and user reports. A recent update is useful evidence of maintenance, but it is not proof of security quality.
Install and audit a VPN extension safely
- Find the provider’s official listing. Search from the provider’s own website when possible, then verify that the Chrome Web Store listing identifies the expected provider as the publisher. Avoid unofficial extensions using names or logos associated with Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Windscribe, TunnelBear, or other brands.
- Read the listing before clicking Add to Chrome. Check the supported Chrome version, features, account requirements, free-plan restrictions, update date, privacy practices, and requested permissions.
- Install only if the permissions make sense. Chrome’s permission guidance explains that access to all website data can include sensitive pages. If the extension offers narrower site-access choices, use the least access that meets your needs. A browser VPN that cannot function without broad access may still be legitimate, but the trade-off should be explicit.
- Review the installed extension. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions, then Manage extensions. Select the VPN extension’s Details page to review its permissions, site access, and Incognito setting.
- Set site access deliberately. Depending on the extension and Chrome version, options may include running on all sites, specific sites, or only when you click the extension. Restricting access can reduce exposure, but it may also prevent automatic protection on sites you did not include.
- Configure the connection. Select a location, enable documented leak or tracking controls if wanted, and use URL exclusions or routing rules when a known site does not work correctly through the proxy.
- Remember the scope. Test the behavior in Chrome, but do not assume that a successful browser connection covers other applications. Use the provider’s native app when whole-device coverage is the goal.
- Remove anything you no longer trust. From the same Manage extensions page, turn off or remove an extension that is unsupported, suspicious, redundant, or requesting access you are not comfortable granting.
Incognito mode: the setting many users miss
Chrome does not automatically allow every extension to run in Incognito. To enable one, open Chrome menu > Extensions > Manage extensions > Details, then turn on Allow in Incognito if that option is available and you understand the permission implications.
Allowing the extension in Incognito does not make Incognito traffic anonymous. Incognito mainly limits local browsing history and session data stored by Chrome. It does not hide activity from websites, your employer or school network, or your internet service provider. It also does not expand a browser extension’s coverage to other applications.
Common problems and what they mean
The extension says connected, but another application still uses my normal connection
This is normally expected behavior for a browser-only extension. Install and activate the provider’s Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS app if you need device-wide coverage. ExpressVPN is a special case in this comparison because its extension can control the full app when the app is installed; its standalone proxy mode remains browser-only.
The extension works in a normal window but not in Incognito
Open the extension’s Details page and enable Allow in Incognito. If you do not see that option or do not want to grant it, use a normal Chrome window or a native VPN app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA website breaks after I connect
Try another location, review the extension’s URL exclusions or routing rules, or temporarily disable the extension for that site if Chrome allows site-specific access. A site may depend on a local location, a login risk check, or traffic behavior that changes when a proxy is used. Do not infer from one broken site that the provider is universally unreliable.
I want protection from WebRTC exposure
Choose an extension whose current listing explicitly documents WebRTC controls, such as NordVPN’s stated WebRTC-leak mitigation or ExpressVPN’s stated WebRTC blocking. CyberGhost’s listing specifically warns that its extension does not protect against WebRTC leaks, so it should not be selected for that requirement.
The free plan stopped working
Check whether you reached a data limit, whether email confirmation is required, whether the location is premium-only, and whether the provider changed its plan terms. Windscribe’s documented free allowance is 10 GB per month after email confirmation; Proton’s listing states no usage limitation for its free extension, but paid features and locations remain separate.
How to identify an official Chrome VPN extension
Use these checks before installation:
- The publisher name matches the VPN provider, not merely the product name or logo.
- The listing is linked or referenced by the provider’s official website.
- The description, privacy practices, support information, and update history are coherent.
- The extension does not claim to be an unrelated free version of a major VPN while using a different publisher.
- The requested permissions are understandable for the stated features.
- The privacy disclosure explains data handling clearly enough for your risk tolerance.
Search results can contain third-party extensions using names such as Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Windscribe, or TunnelBear. A familiar name, large user count, or high rating does not prove that the listing belongs to the provider. If the publisher cannot be verified, do not install it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are VPN extensions for Chrome safe?
They can be useful, but safety depends on the provider, publisher identity, permissions, and data-handling practices. Chrome extensions may read or change website data, including information on sensitive pages. Install only an official listing, review the privacy disclosure and permissions, restrict site access where practical, and do not treat store ratings or user counts as security audits.
Does a Chrome VPN extension protect other applications?
Usually not. A Chrome extension normally provides browser-only proxy coverage. It does not automatically protect another browser, a game, an email client, or other desktop and mobile applications. Use the provider’s native VPN application for full-device coverage.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I use a free VPN extension in Chrome?
Yes, but free plans differ. Proton VPN’s listing states that its free extension has no usage limitations, while Windscribe states that its free plan provides 10 GB per month after email confirmation. Browsec offers a free extension with premium locations and settings available as upgrades. Check the current terms because limits and features can change.
Do Chrome VPN extensions work in Incognito mode?
Only after you separately enable the extension’s Allow in Incognito setting in Chrome’s extension details. Incognito itself does not make you anonymous or hide activity from websites, employers, schools, or internet service providers.
How can I tell whether a Chrome VPN extension is official?
Verify that the Chrome Web Store publisher matches the VPN company and that the provider’s official website points to the same listing. Review the listing’s permissions, privacy disclosure, version, update date, and support details. Avoid unofficial lookalikes using a well-known VPN’s name or branding.
The Bottom Line
Choose Proton VPN for the most clearly documented free starting option, Windscribe for a predictable 10 GB free allowance, Surfshark for bundled browser-security tools, NordVPN for a broad feature set, ExpressVPN if you may want full-app control later, and TunnelBear for simplicity. Browsec is a basic free option that warrants careful privacy-disclosure review, while CyberGhost is best treated as a limited four-location proxy. If your real goal is to protect every application on a computer or phone, skip the extension-only approach and use a native VPN app.
