Which service should you use?
These services solve different problems. Directories point you towards promotions offered by other organisations; giveaway networks connect people nearby; surplus-food services help participating businesses pass on food. Choose by what you want and whether you can collect locally, rather than assuming one app is best across the UK.

MoneySavingExpert’s guide, updated 21 April 2026, recommends joining both Freecycle and Freegle because local groups differ, and checking frequently because popular posts can be claimed quickly. That advice also applies to other local listings: activity in your town matters more than a service’s national profile.
Where can you find free samples by post?
Use a freebie directory to discover sample promotions, then follow its listing through to the organisation actually supplying the sample. Latest Free Stuff describes its listings as handpicked; Freebie Supermarket says it checks UK offers daily and organises them into categories. These are directory descriptions, not a guarantee that every listed offer is still open or that a sample will arrive.

Before submitting details, check the provider’s own terms for postage, eligibility, stock limits, deadlines and any purchase or referral requirement. Treat the provider’s page as authoritative: a directory can help you find an offer, but the provider controls whether you qualify and whether stock remains.
How do you find free stuff near you?
Search Freecycle, Freegle and Olio with your location set appropriately, then check listings regularly. MoneySavingExpert advises checking both Freecycle and Freegle since groups vary by area. Listings are not a nationwide catalogue, so a quiet feed does not mean the service is broken; it may simply reflect local activity.

Be prepared to arrange collection promptly and agree practical details with the person offering an item. Never assume a particular object or food listing will be available in every town. Olio describes both free food from local shops and items shared by neighbours, including books, toys and toiletries; volunteers may collect surplus food from local businesses for nearby sharing.

Olio’s description covers food shared by local shops and neighbours, alongside non-food items. A recipient does not pay for the food listing as described, but must still check the individual post and arrange collection according to its details.

Discounted surprise bags: Too Good To Go
Too Good To Go lets users browse participating venues and buy a surprise “magic bag” of surplus food. Buckinghamshire Council describes each bag as costing a third of its retail price; that is the council’s description, not an independently tested comparison, and the bag’s contents are a surprise. The council page also reports 6.6 million UK users without giving a reference date, so that figure should not be read as a current user count.
The practical distinction is simple: Olio is described here as free sharing, while Too Good To Go involves payment for discounted food. Check the venue, collection window, contents information and price shown in the app before you commit.

How to check that a freebie or discount is genuine
A listing’s label is not enough to establish that the offer is free or worthwhile. For example, a reward may require a purchase or qualifying action, and a promotion may lead into a paid subscription. London for Cheap’s guide, with live offers last checked 3 October 2026, separates completely free offers from those requiring payment or another action.
- Read the original offer terms. Confirm what is included, who is eligible, whether the offer is still open and when it expires.
- Look for the real cost. Check for postage, a minimum spend, a paid add-on or a qualifying purchase. If you only want the free item, do not proceed until the total cost is clear.
- Check recurring-payment terms. Before entering payment details for a trial or reward, look for the renewal date, ongoing price and cancellation method. The London for Cheap guide advises checking renewal terms, using the official company page and reviewing optional marketing boxes.
- Do not pay surprise release fees. The same guide warns against unexpected delivery or prize-release fees. Verify any charge on the provider’s official page rather than trusting an unexpected message or link.
- Compare the discount with the usual price. The UK government warns that a discount can be misleading if the promotional price is the same as the price before the promotion. Compare the actual price with the seller’s ordinary price, not just a crossed-out figure.
The Prime Minister’s Office said on 9 August 2026 that Citizens Advice had found over 13 million people (26% of UK adults) accidentally took out a subscription in a year. The release does not state which year that finding measured, so it should not be treated as a dated annual rate. A free trial or “reward” that asks for payment details deserves particular scrutiny.

Some products are not legitimate public freebies: UK government guidance says businesses must not offer free samples or promotional giveaways of vaping and nicotine products to members of the public, including through third-party promotions. Avoid offers of that kind.
What to expect from these services
There is no supported national ranking by success rate or value for these services. Freebie stock, local posts, expiry dates and promotional conditions change; check the provider before claiming an offer. Directories can make discovery easier, while local networks depend on nearby participation, and a discounted food bag is not the same thing as a free sample.
