Best overall: the GL.iNet Beryl 7 (GL-MT3600BE). It combines dual-band Wi-Fi 7, two 2.5GbE ports, USB-C power delivery, USB 3.0, and the highest documented router-level VPN throughput in this group. Choose the GL.iNet Beryl AX for a smaller, cheaper Wi-Fi 6 option, or the GL.iNet Mudi 7 if you need built-in 5G, eSIM support, and battery power rather than dependence on hotel or airport Wi-Fi.

These recommendations are based on manufacturer specifications, intended use, portability, and listed US prices—not independent head-to-head testing. Real-world performance will depend heavily on the upstream hotel, airport, café, tethered-phone, or cellular connection.

What a travel router actually does

A conventional travel router does not create internet access from nothing. It takes an existing connection—such as hotel Ethernet, hotel or airport Wi-Fi, USB tethering, or a phone hotspot—and shares it through a private local network for your laptop, phone, tablet, streaming device, or work equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In repeater or WISP mode, the router joins the venue’s public network and creates a separate subnet for your devices. This can be more convenient than signing every device into a hotel network individually, and it can place a router-level VPN between your devices and the upstream connection. A cellular model such as the Mudi 7 can also obtain its upstream connection from a SIM or eSIM plan.

GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 Opal Travel Router, AC1200 Dual-Band Wi-Fi | AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi, 3 gigabit ports, OpenWrt with OpenVPN and WireGuard, 30+ VPN services, pocket 145g
  • 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
  • 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
  • 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
  • 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

That distinction matters: a non-cellular travel router still depends on the quality, speed, congestion, login requirements, and terms of the network it joins. A fast Wi-Fi 7 router cannot make a slow or overloaded hotel connection fast.

All Wi-Fi and VPN figures above are manufacturer-stated maximums or ratings. They should not be treated as independent test results or promised internet speeds.

1. GL.iNet Beryl 7: best overall

The Beryl 7 is the strongest all-round choice for frequent flyers and travellers who want a current, capable router without moving up to a cellular device. Its dual-band Wi-Fi 7 hardware is paired with two 2.5GbE ports, USB 3.0, and USB-C power delivery. That combination gives it useful flexibility in hotel rooms: it can work with wired Ethernet, repeat a wireless connection, share a tethered connection, and support multiple local devices.

Its biggest advantage over the less expensive Beryl AX is processing headroom for a router-level VPN. GL.iNet lists client-mode maximums of up to 1,100 Mbps for WireGuard and 1,000 Mbps for OpenVPN-DCO. Those figures are especially relevant to remote workers who want the router—not each individual laptop or phone—to run the VPN.

Do not read those numbers as a promise that a hotel connection will reach 1 Gbps. The cited figures are manufacturer tests on a local network, and actual performance varies with configuration, VPN server distance, upstream congestion, encryption settings, and the VPN provider. Server mode can also be slower.

Buy it if: you frequently use hotel Ethernet or Wi-Fi, want strong VPN headroom, connect several devices, or want 2.5GbE and USB-C PD for longer-term flexibility.

2. GL.iNet Beryl AX: best value

The Beryl AX remains the sensible value pick when Wi-Fi 6 is sufficient. At 196 g, it is compact enough for regular travel, while still offering a 2.5GbE WAN port, a 1GbE LAN port, USB 3.0, and router-level VPN support.

Its documented wireless rating is up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2,402 Mbps on 5 GHz. GL.iNet lists up to 300 Mbps for WireGuard client mode and 150 Mbps for OpenVPN client mode. That is considerably less than the Beryl 7’s cited VPN performance, but it is adequate for many hotel connections and ordinary remote work.

The Beryl AX is a better buy than a very old AC750 travel router if you want modern Wi-Fi, wired flexibility, and a practical VPN option without paying for Wi-Fi 7. It uses USB-C at 5V/3A rather than documenting the USB-C PD feature highlighted on the Beryl 7 and Slate 7.

Buy it if: price, size, and value matter more than Wi-Fi 7 or maximum VPN throughput.

3. GL.iNet Slate 7: best if you want touchscreen controls

The Slate 7 is aimed at travellers who value an integrated touchscreen and a larger, more feature-oriented design. It has dual-band Wi-Fi 7, two 2.5GbE ports, USB-C PD, 1 GB of RAM, and 512 MB of flash storage.

Its 295 g weight and $169.99 listed US price make it less attractive than the Beryl 7 for most flyers. The touchscreen may nevertheless justify the difference if you want to inspect or change settings directly on the router instead of relying on a phone or computer.

Buy it if: the touchscreen is genuinely useful to you and you prefer its physical design. Otherwise, the Beryl 7 offers a stronger value proposition based on the cited specifications and price.

4. GL.iNet Mudi 7: best self-contained 5G option

The Mudi 7 is a different category of product. It can use 5G NR, an eSIM, or physical SIMs, and it includes dual-SIM dual-standby support, a 5,380 mAh battery, and a stated runtime of up to 13.5 hours. It also supports tri-band Wi-Fi 7, including 6 GHz, and has 2.5GbE.

TP-Link WiFi Travel Router (WiFi 5) | Support Multiple Modes, WiFi Router/Hotspot/Bridge/Range Extender/Access Point/Client Modes, Dual Band, 1 USB 2.0 Port
  • Travel Sized Design: Conveniently small and light to pack and take on the road, creating Wi Fi network via Ethernet
  • Dual Band AC750 Wi Fi: Strong, fast connection for HD streaming on all your devices. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, & obstacles such as walls.
  • One Switch for Multiple Modes: Perfect for Wi Fi at Home, your hotel room or on the road
  • Flexible Power: Micro USB port to an adapter, portable charger or laptop
  • Industry leading 2 year warranty and unlimited 24/7 technical support. Keep your WiFi performing at its best by keeping the firmware updated through the Tether App.

This makes it the most compelling option when the main problem is unreliable or restricted hotel internet. You can use a compatible cellular plan as the router’s WAN connection and share it with your travel devices. It is also useful for road trips, temporary work locations, and destinations where you have planned reliable mobile coverage but cannot count on venue Wi-Fi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, 5G support is not global by default. The Mudi 7 has distinct North American and European band variants. Check the exact regional model against both your carrier’s bands and the countries you will visit. You also need to budget for a SIM or eSIM data plan, and the $419.99 listed US price is substantially higher than the non-cellular choices.

Buy it if: an independent cellular WAN, battery power, and SIM/eSIM flexibility are more important than low price or minimum size.

5. Cudy TR3000: a compact alternative

The Cudy TR3000 is worth considering if you want a non-GL.iNet option with modern core connectivity. Its documented features include Wi-Fi 6 rated at up to 2,402 + 574 Mbps, 2.5GbE and Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, USB-C power, and VPN client/server support. At 160 g, it is also lighter than the Beryl AX.

The qualification is support and workflow confidence. Before treating it as interchangeable with the Beryl models, verify its current firmware, retailer support, captive-portal process, and price. Those details can matter more on the road than a theoretical wireless rate.

6. TP-Link TL-WR902AC: only for basic use

The TL-WR902AC can still make sense for uncomplicated hotel Ethernet or WISP use on a tight budget. It supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5, with a stated 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 433 Mbps on 5 GHz, plus router and hotspot modes.

It is not the right recommendation for someone specifically seeking current Wi-Fi, fast VPN processing, or high-throughput local networking. Its AC750 class is a clear step behind the newer Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 choices.

How to choose the right travel router

Start with the WAN connection

  • Hotel Wi-Fi or Ethernet: choose Beryl 7, Beryl AX, or Slate 7.
  • Phone hotspot or USB tethering: the same non-cellular models can be suitable, provided your phone and plan support the intended tethering method.
  • Independent mobile data: start with Mudi 7, then confirm regional bands, carrier compatibility, SIM/eSIM support, and data-plan cost.

Pay for VPN performance only when you need it

If every connected device will run its own VPN app, the router’s maximum VPN throughput may be less important. If you want one VPN configuration at the router for laptops, phones, tablets, TVs, and other devices, the Beryl 7’s much higher stated client-mode figures make it the more appropriate choice.

Do not buy Wi-Fi 7 for the label alone

Wi-Fi 7 can provide newer hardware and more local-network headroom, but it cannot overcome a slow upstream network. A hotel that supplies a congested Wi-Fi 5 connection remains the bottleneck. The Beryl 7 is attractive because Wi-Fi 7 comes alongside 2.5GbE, USB-C PD, and stronger stated VPN processing—not simply because the name contains “Wi-Fi 7.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider power and wired ports

USB-C PD on the Beryl 7 and Slate 7 can help reduce charger clutter, especially if your travel kit already uses USB-C power. The Beryl AX uses USB-C at 5V/3A. Two 2.5GbE ports are useful when a hotel provides wired internet or when you want to connect a wired device locally, although the upstream connection may still be slower.

Using a travel router with hotel and airport captive portals

A captive portal is the web page that asks you to accept terms, enter a room number, provide a code, or sign in before internet access is granted. A travel router can work with these systems, but compatibility is not universal.

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the travel router’s private Wi-Fi network.
  2. Put the router into repeater or WISP mode.
  3. Scan for and join the hotel’s or venue’s Wi-Fi network.
  4. Open a browser on the connected device and complete the venue’s portal.
  5. Confirm that the router itself has working internet access.
  6. Only then enable your normal VPN policy and test the devices you intend to use.

If the portal does not appear, GL.iNet’s documented public-hotspot login workflow includes options such as MAC-address handling and MAC cloning. Some venues register the first device they see, limit the number of devices, or require staff to whitelist a router’s MAC address. In those cases, contact the venue rather than assuming the router is defective.

Public-hotspot login mode is a connection convenience, not a privacy mode. GL.iNet notes that it can suspend some services and switch DNS to automatic, which may expose DNS activity to the hotspot provider. After completing the login, check that the upstream connection works and then apply the VPN and DNS settings you actually want.

VPN, privacy, and security caveats

A compatible travel router can run a VPN client for devices connected to it. If you need traffic blocked whenever the VPN tunnel fails, configure an appropriate kill switch. GL.iNet distinguishes between a per-tunnel kill switch and Enhanced Kill Switch, which blocks traffic that does not match a VPN tunnel.

A travel router does not automatically make public Wi-Fi anonymous, and it does not guarantee that every connection is encrypted at all times. Privacy depends on the VPN service, tunnel state, DNS and routing policy, device configuration, and what the upstream network can observe before the tunnel is established.

Before using any router on a trip:

  • Change default administrator credentials.
  • Set a unique Wi-Fi network name and strong passphrase.
  • Install current firmware before departure.
  • Configure and test the VPN while you still have reliable internet access.
  • Decide whether devices should be blocked from the internet if the VPN fails.
  • Carry a backup connection method, such as phone tethering, if the trip depends on connectivity.

Which model should each type of traveller buy?

  • Frequent flyer: buy the Beryl 7 for the best balance of portability, wired flexibility, current wireless hardware, and VPN headroom.
  • Family sharing one hotel connection: buy the Beryl 7 or Beryl AX. A single router is easier than registering every family device, though the hotel may still limit or approve connected equipment.
  • Remote worker using a router-level VPN: prefer the Beryl 7 because its manufacturer-stated client-mode VPN maxima are substantially higher than the Beryl AX’s.
  • Traveller who cannot rely on hotel Wi-Fi: buy the Mudi 7 only after validating the regional cellular version, carrier bands, coverage, and data plan.
  • Occasional traveller on a strict budget: consider the Beryl AX. The TL-WR902AC is suitable only if your needs are basic and you accept older Wi-Fi 5 hardware.
  • Traveller who wants controls on the device itself: choose the Slate 7 for its integrated touchscreen.

Price, availability, and buying checklist

The US manufacturer-store prices in the research used for this guide were observed on August 10, 2026: $129.99 for Beryl 7, $98.99 for Beryl AX, $169.99 for Slate 7, and $419.99 for Mudi 7. Prices can change by country, promotion, tax, warehouse, plug type, regional radio version, and bundle.

Before ordering, confirm:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a travel router provide internet without Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or mobile data?

Usually no. A conventional travel router needs an upstream connection such as hotel Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB tethering, or a phone hotspot. A cellular model such as the Mudi 7 can use a compatible SIM or eSIM data plan as its upstream connection.

Can a travel router bypass a hotel captive portal?

It can often connect through one, but it cannot guarantee compatibility. Join the hotel network in repeater or WISP mode and complete the portal from a device connected to the router. Some venues register a MAC address, limit devices, or require staff approval.

Is the Beryl 7 faster than the Beryl AX in real-world hotel use?

The Beryl 7 has substantially higher manufacturer-stated client-mode VPN maxima and newer Wi-Fi hardware, but real-world hotel internet speed depends on the venue’s upstream connection. The specifications do not constitute an independent head-to-head test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a travel router make public Wi-Fi completely private?

No. Privacy depends on a correctly configured VPN, DNS and routing settings, kill-switch behavior, and the state of the tunnel. Do not assume that a travel router automatically makes all traffic anonymous or encrypted.

The Bottom Line

For most travellers, buy the GL.iNet Beryl 7. It is the best documented all-rounder here for hotel Wi-Fi and Ethernet, multiple devices, wired flexibility, and router-level VPN use. Save money and space with the Beryl AX, choose the Slate 7 for its touchscreen, and choose the Mudi 7 only when built-in 5G and battery-powered independent connectivity justify its much higher price.
