The best subwoofer for a Toyota Tacoma depends on four checks before you buy: model year, cab style, factory audio system, and available space behind the rear seat. For a 2016–2023 Double Cab, the Metra TY-TAC1-10 is the clearest fit-specific starting point because it is a loaded, ported enclosure with a front-firing VIBE 10-inch shallow driver and a behind-seat mounting design. Buyers who need a broader upgrade can consider Metra’s TY-PPKT-1 complete system, while dual-driver or alternate loaded enclosures suit different space and amplifier plans. None can honestly be called the universal winner: the cited specifications are manufacturer claims, not independent listening tests, and 2024+ Tacoma JBL and non-JBL systems require different integration paths.
Which Toyota Tacoma subwoofer is the best choice?
Choose the option that matches your exact Tacoma rather than the one with the largest watt number. The table below separates documented fit, what you receive, and the limitation that must be checked before purchase.
| Option | Documented application | What it includes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metra TY-TAC1-10 with VIBE BLACKAIR10D2S-V3 | 2016–2023 Tacoma Double Cab | Loaded single 10-inch, ported, front-firing enclosure; behind-seat mounting; 300 W RMS, 900 W peak; dual 2-ohm voice coils | Confirm the enclosure fits your truck and that your amplifier can drive the dual-2-ohm load. A loaded box is not a complete vehicle sound-system upgrade. |
| Metra TY-PPKT-1 | 2016–2023 Double Cab with a non-amplified factory system | Amplifiers, six speakers, DSP, vehicle-specific integration parts, and the TY-TAC1-10 enclosure | The product description does not establish fit for amplified or JBL trucks. |
| Skar L-VS-1X10TOY-TACOM-2016-UP-DBLCAB | Listing states 2016–2023 Tacoma Double Cab | Loaded single 10-inch enclosure | Verify the current listing, dimensions, fit, amplifier needs, stock, and price before ordering. |
| MB Quart MBTAC-SUB-1 | 2016–2023 Tacoma, all trims according to the manufacturer | Dual 10-inch sealed enclosure, described as 600 W, designed for behind-seat installation | Requires an MB Quart Tacoma Stage 6 system or an aftermarket amplifier. |
If you want the most straightforward documented match for a 2016–2023 Double Cab and already have an amplifier plan, start by checking the TY-TAC1-10. If you are replacing the rest of the audio system in a non-amplified truck, the TY-PPKT-1 is the more complete route. The dual-driver MB Quart enclosure is aimed at a different system architecture, not a drop-in recommendation for every Tacoma.
How do I verify that a subwoofer fits my Tacoma?
“Fits Tacoma” is not enough information. Confirm the year, cab, factory audio, mounting location, and electrical requirements in that order.

1. Identify the model year and generation
The strongest fit-specific products in this comparison are documented for 2016–2023 Double Cab trucks. Do not extend those claims to a 2024 or newer Tacoma, an Access Cab, or a Single Cab without a current vehicle-specific fit guide. Older Tacoma references found in archived material are leads only; current compatibility and availability were not established.
2. Confirm the cab style
Rear-seat volume, trim panels, and mounting points differ between cab configurations. Measure the space behind the seat with the seat in its normal driving position, including the height and angle of the seatback. Check that the enclosure will not interfere with seat travel, seat belts, storage, or the rear-panel fasteners.
3. Determine whether the factory system is amplified
A non-amplified system and a factory-amplified or JBL system do not present the same signal or wiring connections. The TY-PPKT-1 is specifically described for non-amplified 2016–2023 Double Cab models. Treating that package as compatible with a JBL truck without confirmation can lead to missing signals, incorrect turn-on behavior, or a system that cannot be integrated cleanly.

For the TY-TAC1-10, Metra lists 300 W RMS, 900 W peak, and dual 2-ohm voice coils. RMS is the useful continuous power figure for matching an amplifier; peak is a short-duration specification and should not be used as the main sizing target. Dual 2-ohm coils can be wired in different ways, so verify the final impedance your amplifier supports before connecting anything.
What is included with a loaded Tacoma subwoofer enclosure?
A loaded enclosure contains the speaker and the box, while an unloaded enclosure requires you to purchase a driver separately. The TY-TAC1-10 combines a ported enclosure with a VIBE BLACKAIR10D2S-V3 10-inch shallow-mount driver, so it is not an empty box waiting for a subwoofer.
That distinction does not mean the enclosure is a complete upgrade by itself. You may still need an amplifier, a signal interface, power and ground wiring, a fuse, speaker wiring, and installation hardware. Factory radio integration is especially important when the truck has a JBL or other amplified system.

Why the TY-TAC1-10 is a practical fit-specific option
Its front-firing, ported design and behind-seat application address the two constraints Tacoma owners usually face: limited cabin space and the need to retain the rear seating area. The 10-inch shallow driver reduces enclosure depth compared with many conventional subwoofers, but you still need to verify the actual enclosure dimensions against your truck.

The 300 W RMS and dual 2-ohm specifications describe the hardware. They do not prove a particular loudness level, tonal balance, or reliability in your truck; no independent comparative listening or laboratory performance result was established for these products.
Should I choose a sealed or ported enclosure?
Choose sealed when compact, controlled bass and a simpler enclosure design matter most; choose ported when you want the enclosure to use its tuning for more output in a specific low-frequency range. The choice is a trade-off, not a universal quality ranking.
Ported: TY-TAC1-10 approach
A ported enclosure uses an opening and an internal tuning volume to reinforce bass around a target range. That can produce more output from a given amplifier in the tuned region, but the enclosure needs the correct air volume and port clearance. Do not block the port with cargo or seat material, and do not assume a different driver will perform correctly in the same box.
Sealed: MB Quart approach
The MBTAC-SUB-1 is described as a dual 10-inch sealed enclosure for behind-seat installation. A sealed box has no port to protect and can be easier to integrate physically, but it uses two drivers and therefore consumes more space and demands an amplifier that can handle the system’s impedance and power requirements. Its stated 600 W figure is a manufacturer description, not an independently measured output result.

How do I match the subwoofer to an amplifier?
Match RMS power, final impedance, channel configuration, and signal compatibility. Start with the subwoofer’s continuous rating, then wire the voice coils according to the amplifier’s supported load rather than choosing an amplifier by peak watts.

Use RMS ratings for the design target
For the TY-TAC1-10, the relevant published figure is 300 W RMS. The 900 W peak number should not be treated as a continuous power requirement. A properly set amplifier that delivers suitable clean power is safer than an oversized amplifier driven into clipping.
Understand dual voice-coil wiring
The TY-TAC1-10 uses dual 2-ohm voice coils. Depending on the wiring arrangement, the final load can differ, and the amplifier must be stable at that load. Verify the wiring diagram supplied with the driver and the amplifier’s minimum impedance before connecting power.
Plan the signal path
An aftermarket head unit may provide a dedicated subwoofer output, while a factory radio may require a line-output converter or a vehicle-specific interface. Amplified and JBL systems can use different signal levels and turn-on logic. Use the exact integration instructions for your trim instead of assuming that a generic RCA connection will work.

Several products in this comparison are specifically designed for behind-seat installation, including the TY-TAC1-10 and MBTAC-SUB-1. Whether one fits your truck depends on cab, year, seat position, trim panels, and the enclosure’s actual depth, so measure before ordering.
Measure the usable space
- Place the seatback at the position you use while driving.
- Measure from the rear wall or panel to the closest point of the seatback, not just the widest opening.
- Record the available width and height, including raised sections, hinges, and seat-belt hardware.
- Leave room for the power, ground, signal, and speaker connectors so cables are not crushed when the seat is returned.
- Check that the enclosure does not block access to emergency equipment, jack storage, or seat-release mechanisms.
A shallow driver helps with depth, but “shallow” does not guarantee clearance in every trim. Use the manufacturer’s dimension drawing and compare it with your measurements.
Is the Metra TY-PPKT-1 complete kit worth considering?
It is worth considering when you own a 2016–2023 Double Cab with a non-amplified factory system and want a coordinated replacement rather than a subwoofer-only addition. The kit includes amplifiers, six speakers, DSP, vehicle-specific integration components, and the TY-TAC1-10 enclosure.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Because the components are intended to work as a matched package, the kit can reduce the guesswork involved in selecting separate speakers, amplifiers, and signal interfaces. The trade-off is scope: it requires replacing or integrating much more of the truck’s audio system than a standalone loaded enclosure.

How do 2024-and-newer Tacoma JBL and non-JBL systems change installation?
They change the integration path, and the difference is documented even though a specific enclosure fit is not established here. The installation resource reviewed for 2024+ Tacoma lists separate powered-subwoofer connection diagrams for JBL and non-JBL trucks, plus separate amplifier diagrams.
That separation means you should not reuse a 2016–2023 wiring assumption on a 2024+ truck. Confirm the exact model year, trim, factory audio package, connector locations, signal type, and current vehicle-specific instructions. A wiring diagram can show how to integrate a signal; it does not prove that a particular behind-seat enclosure clears the newer truck’s interior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does installation involve?
Installation is more involved than placing a box in the cabin. A professional installation may require removing rear trim panels, routing power and signal wiring, securing the enclosure, and configuring gain and crossover controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Disconnect the battery. Follow the vehicle and amplifier safety instructions before touching factory wiring.
- Remove only the panels specified by the vehicle-specific guide. Metra’s instructions include rear-panel removal for its complete installation. Protect clips and keep fasteners organized.
- Route power through an appropriately fused path. Keep the fuse close to the battery and protect wiring from sharp metal, heat, moving seat hardware, and pinch points.
- Connect the signal interface. Use the correct factory-system integration method for non-amplified, amplified, or JBL equipment; do not splice by color alone.
- Wire the subwoofer coils and amplifier load. Confirm polarity and final impedance with the driver and amplifier documentation.
- Secure the enclosure. A behind-seat box must not move during braking or a collision, and it must not interfere with seat-belt operation.
- Test before reinstalling every panel. Check for clean output, no rattles, proper turn-on and shutdown, and no warning lights or loss of factory functions.
- Set gain and crossover conservatively. Use a clean signal and increase output gradually; excessive gain can create distortion and damage the driver.
Metra warns that incorrect installation can damage the vehicle or equipment. If you are unfamiliar with trim removal, air-bag-adjacent wiring, or amplifier power installation, use a qualified car-audio technician.

What problems occur after installation, and how can I fix them?
The subwoofer is silent
- Check the amplifier fuse, ground connection, remote turn-on signal, and battery voltage.
- Confirm that the factory system is not muted, faded entirely to the front, or using a signal interface that needs configuration.
- Verify voice-coil wiring and amplifier impedance stability.
There is bass but it is weak or thin
- Check polarity at the subwoofer and amplifier; reversed polarity can cause cancellation with the door speakers.
- Confirm that the port on a ported enclosure is not blocked by the seat or cargo.
- Adjust crossover and gain after confirming that the signal is clean.
There is a hum or alternator noise
- Inspect the ground point for bare, tight metal contact.
- Separate signal cables from high-current power wiring where practical.
- Check for damaged cables or an improperly installed line-output interface.
Panels rattle or the seat will not latch
- Stop using the system until the enclosure and wiring are secured.
- Look for trapped trim clips, loose fasteners, and cable runs crossing a seat hinge.
- Do not modify a seat-belt mount or obstruct a release mechanism to make an enclosure fit.
Are older Tacoma subwoofer listings still reliable?
Not automatically. Archived JL Audio fitment material and a discontinued MTX listing surfaced for older Tacomas, but current model availability and compatibility were not confirmed. Treat those references as starting points only and use a current manufacturer fit guide for your exact year and cab.
Older trucks may also have different factory radios, wiring, and seat structures than the 2016–2023 Double Cab applications documented above. Measure the vehicle and confirm the amplifier and integration requirements before adapting an older enclosure.
What should I check before ordering?
- Vehicle: exact year, generation, cab style, trim, and whether the truck is 2016–2023 or 2024+.
- Factory audio: non-amplified, amplified, or JBL; obtain the correct wiring diagram.
- Physical fit: enclosure width, height, depth, seat movement, panel clearance, and cable space.
- System type: loaded or unloaded enclosure, one or two drivers, sealed or ported design.
- Electrical match: RMS power, voice-coil impedance, amplifier minimum load, fuse, and wiring gauge.
- Included parts: driver, enclosure, amplifier, DSP, speakers, integration hardware, and mounting hardware.
- Installation: whether you can safely remove trim and route fused power, or need a professional.
- Availability: verify the current price and stock because listings and product availability can change.
The safest buying decision is the one that passes every check, even if it has fewer drivers or a lower peak-watt number. The documented products do not establish an independently tested sonic winner, so fit and system compatibility should decide the purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a Tacoma subwoofer without replacing the factory radio?
Often, yes, but the interface depends on whether the truck has a non-amplified, amplified, or JBL system. A factory-compatible line-output or integration device may be required, and its connector and signal requirements must match the exact trim.
Will a behind-seat subwoofer reduce rear-passenger comfort?
It can if the enclosure projects into legroom or changes the seatback angle. Test the seat in its normal position with passengers in mind, and leave clearance for seat belts, hinges, and storage access.
Do two 10-inch drivers always sound louder than one 10-inch driver?
Not necessarily. Output depends on enclosure design, amplifier power, impedance, cabin loading, and tuning; two drivers also consume more space and may require a different amplifier configuration.
How often should I recheck a newly installed subwoofer?
After the first few drives, inspect enclosure fasteners, power and ground connections, fuse seating, and cable clearance around the rear seat. Recheck immediately if you hear rattles, intermittent output, or a burning smell.
