CoinGlass is the best starting point for most traders who need a cross-exchange view of Bitcoin open interest (OI) and funding. It combines exchange-by-exchange OI, historical and weighted funding, rankings and heatmap-style monitoring. Choose Coinalyze for a Bitcoin-focused derivatives workspace and a documented API, TradingView when derivatives indicators should share a chart with price, CryptoQuant when you need OI and funding beside exchange-flow and on-chain data, and Velo Data when very fast updates, exchange filters and configurable normalization matter more than a simple dashboard.

This guide explains what the metrics measure, how each service calculates or presents them, where their data can diverge, and how to build a monitoring workflow without mistaking an analytics dashboard for an execution venue.

Quick answer: which Bitcoin OI and funding tool should you use?

Tool Best fit Defining strength Main qualification
CoinGlass Broad market monitoring Multi-exchange OI, funding history, rankings and weighted views in one dashboard Aggregated figures are a monitoring layer; confirm the rate and contract on the exchange where you would trade
Coinalyze Focused Bitcoin derivatives analysis and API use BTC OI, funding, liquidations, basis and per-exchange charts, plus public API documentation The BTC aggregate chart is not real-time; its Markets page is the real-time view
TradingView Chart-first workflows Derivatives indicators can be placed beside price, volume and other studies in Supercharts Check whether the selected symbol is aggregated or tied to one venue
CryptoQuant Derivatives combined with on-chain research Funding, OI, liquidations and premium indices alongside a large on-chain dataset The Basic API tier is limited to daily data, 30 days of history and 10,000 credits per month (current documentation, accessed 2026)
Velo Data Active, configurable monitoring Live chart updates up to 10 times per second, exchange filters and multiple funding normalizations Displayed funding may be updating or predicted; normalize intervals before comparing it with an exchange quote

What open interest and funding rates actually tell you

Open interest is outstanding derivatives exposure

Open interest is the notional exposure in futures or perpetual-futures contracts that remains open. A venue reports its own contracts; an aggregator combines contracts from several venues. A rise in OI means new exposure is being opened or positions are being transferred into the measured set, while a fall means positions are being closed or otherwise removed. OI does not identify whether longs or shorts are dominant: every futures contract has both sides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aggregators may convert coin-margined and stablecoin-margined contracts into a common US-dollar value. Coinalyze, for example, defines its aggregated BTC OI as both contract types converted to USD. That conversion makes venues easier to compare but introduces a quote-currency and price dependency that is not present in a raw contract count.

Funding is a payment on perpetual futures

Perpetual contracts do not expire, so exchanges use periodic funding payments to keep their mark price near spot. When funding is positive, perpetuals generally trade above spot and longs pay shorts. Negative funding generally indicates the opposite payment direction. The exact formula, cap, interval and premium calculation are exchange-specific, so the same BTC market can show different rates at the same moment.

A displayed aggregate is often open-interest weighted: a large venue contributes more to the aggregate than a small venue. Volume-weighted calculations use a different influence measure. A rate without its interval is incomplete; 0.01% per eight hours is not the same economic figure as 0.01% per hour.

How to read OI and funding together

  • Price up, OI up, funding rising: new leveraged exposure is entering while longs are increasingly paying. This can support momentum but leaves the market more vulnerable to a long squeeze.
  • Price down, OI up, funding falling: short exposure is building or becoming more expensive for longs to hold. A sharp reversal can force short covering.
  • Price up, OI down: a move may be driven by position closures rather than fresh leverage.
  • Funding extreme while OI is ordinary: the rate may be concentrated on one venue or contract; inspect venue-level data before treating it as a market-wide signal.

These are positioning clues, not standalone entry signals. Use liquidation, basis, spot volume and, where available, exchange-flow data to test the story.

CoinGlass: best broad multi-exchange dashboard

CoinGlass is the clearest first stop when the question is “What is happening across Bitcoin futures venues right now?” Its official endpoint documentation covers futures OI history, aggregated OI history, exchange lists, funding-rate history, OI-weighted and volume-weighted funding, accumulated funding and funding-arbitrage data. The exchange-list endpoint returns a coin’s OI across multiple exchanges and documents a 10-second cache/update frequency.

Use CoinGlass for

  • Comparing BTC OI and funding by exchange instead of relying on one venue.
  • Seeing whether an aggregate move is broad or concentrated on a single exchange.
  • Reviewing historical funding, accumulated payments and weighted-versus-unweighted views.
  • Scanning rankings or heatmap-style screens before opening a detailed chart.

Practical CoinGlass workflow

  1. Open the Bitcoin derivatives or futures area and select the OI view.
  2. Start with the exchange list, then sort by OI to identify which venues dominate the aggregate.
  3. Switch to funding history and choose the weighting method that matches your question. Use OI weighting for a market-size view; inspect individual venues for execution decisions.
  4. Set the same time window for price, OI and funding before interpreting a move.
  5. When you are ready to place a trade, copy the exact contract, funding interval and current rate from the intended exchange. CoinGlass does not execute the order.

The main risk is false precision: a fast aggregate can conceal a stale or exceptional venue print. Treat the 10-second cache as the endpoint’s update behavior, not a guarantee that every underlying exchange tick arrives simultaneously.

Coinalyze: focused Bitcoin charts and a documented API

Coinalyze is a strong choice when Bitcoin derivatives are the center of your workspace rather than one panel in a broader market terminal. Its BTC page combines aggregate OI, funding, liquidations, basis and per-exchange contract charts. The aggregate OI definition includes coin-margined and stablecoin-margined contracts converted to US dollars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important real-time distinction

Coinalyze explicitly notes that its displayed aggregate BTC chart is not updated in real time and directs users to its Markets page for real-time views. Do not use the aggregate chart to verify an imminent funding payment; use the real-time market view and then confirm the exchange’s own funding clock.

API use

The API documentation exposes current, predicted and historical funding-rate endpoints as well as OI data. It states that public use is free when the source is cited. That makes Coinalyze practical for a small dashboard, research notebook or alert script, provided you preserve the contract identifier, quote currency and timestamp in your stored data.

Recommended Coinalyze routine

  1. Use the Markets page for the current BTC contract and note the venue and contract type.
  2. Open OI, funding, liquidations and basis on the same time scale.
  3. Compare the aggregate with the per-exchange series to find concentration.
  4. For automation, call the current or predicted funding endpoint only after recording the interval and response timestamp.
  5. Use historical endpoints for trend analysis, not as a substitute for the exchange’s settlement record.

TradingView: put derivatives beside the price chart

TradingView is the natural choice if your analysis already lives in Supercharts. Add the funding-rate indicator through Indicators → Fundamentals → Derivatives, then place it alongside BTC price, volume, moving averages or market-structure tools.

Choose the right series

TradingView distinguishes aggregated funding from non-aggregated data. Aggregated data gives a broader market view; a venue-specific series is more useful for short-term analysis of one exchange. The symbol name and indicator settings determine which you are seeing, so read the instrument description instead of assuming every “BTC funding” line is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chart setup that avoids common mistakes

  1. Open Supercharts and load the BTC spot or perpetual chart that matches the market you are studying.
  2. Select Indicators, open Fundamentals, choose Derivatives, and add the funding-rate study.
  3. Check whether the funding plot is aggregated or tied to a particular venue.
  4. Match the chart timeframe to the funding interval; do not compare an annualized display with an eight-hour exchange quote.
  5. Save the layout and add an alert only after confirming what event the alert watches (crossing a level, not necessarily a payment settlement).

TradingView is excellent for visual context, but the feed’s symbol definitions and update behavior vary. For an actual order, verify the rate, mark price and next payment time at the exchange.

CryptoQuant: derivatives interpreted with on-chain data

CryptoQuant fits researchers who want to ask questions such as whether rising BTC OI coincides with exchange inflows, reserve changes or other network signals. Its Data API includes price, OHLCV, funding rates, OI, liquidations and premium indices, plus more than 200 on-chain metrics across more than 490 assets in the current API documentation (accessed 2026).

What the BTC market-data guide provides

The BTC guide documents an OI endpoint for Bitcoin perpetuals across derivative exchanges and a funding-rates endpoint. This lets you join derivatives positioning to exchange-flow or reserve series in one analysis rather than exporting screenshots from separate dashboards.

Basic API constraints

The documented Basic free tier provides 10,000 credits per month, daily resolution and 30 days of history. Those limits are suitable for low-frequency research and prototypes, not high-frequency monitoring. Confirm the current allowance and resolution before designing a polling schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suggested CryptoQuant workflow

  1. Choose the BTC perpetual OI and funding series and record their resolution.
  2. Add the exchange-flow, reserve or premium metric that represents your market hypothesis.
  3. Align timestamps and timezone before calculating correlations or event windows.
  4. Keep venue coverage consistent across the period; a changing exchange set can look like a positioning change.
  5. Use a higher-resolution or broader-history plan only when the decision genuinely needs it.

CryptoQuant’s advantage is context, not necessarily the fastest derivatives tick. Use it to test a narrative about positioning and flows, then use a real-time venue or dashboard to verify execution conditions.

Velo Data: fastest configurable monitoring and normalization

Velo Data is aimed at users who want a live, configurable screen rather than a fixed summary. Its documentation describes chart updates of up to 10 times per second, exchange filtering, OI shown in dollar or coin terms, and funding normalized to 1-hour, 8-hour, 24-hour or annual views.

Understand Velo’s funding display

Velo explains that funding spend is calculated as funding rate multiplied by OI. Its displayed funding can represent an updating or predicted rate rather than only the last completed payment interval. That is useful for estimating carrying cost, but it is not interchangeable with an exchange’s settled rate unless the interval, prediction status and contract are identical.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Build a Velo monitoring layout

  1. Filter the exchange set to the venues you actually trade or hedge.
  2. Choose dollar OI for portfolio-scale exposure or coin OI when you want to remove some price-driven distortion.
  3. Select one funding normalization, preferably the same interval used by your execution venue.
  4. Place price, OI, funding and liquidations in the same layout.
  5. Label panels as updating, predicted or settled so a quick glance cannot confuse them.

Velo is particularly useful for active monitoring, but its speed does not remove the need to check exchange-specific contract rules and payment schedules.

How to compare funding readings without fooling yourself

Two dashboards can both be correct and still show different numbers. Before comparing them, standardize every item in this checklist:

  • Contract: perpetual versus dated future; inverse or linear; coin-margined or stablecoin-margined.
  • Venue set: one exchange, a named group or the provider’s full coverage.
  • Weighting: OI-weighted, volume-weighted or simple average.
  • Interval: hourly, eight-hour, daily or annualized.
  • Status: predicted, currently updating or last settled payment.
  • Quote currency: BTC, USD, USDT or another unit.
  • Timestamp: timezone, last update and whether the value is cached.

For a fair comparison, write the normalized value and its metadata into your notes or database. A naked percentage is not reproducible.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The aggregate says positive funding, but my exchange is negative.”

Inspect venue-level funding. Aggregate weighting can let a large exchange dominate, while a smaller venue has a different premium, formula or contract mix. Trade decisions should use the intended venue’s rate.

“OI rose, so longs must be winning.”

OI counts both sides of every contract. Combine it with price, liquidation direction, basis and funding; OI alone cannot identify directional winners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The rate looks huge, but the cost is modest.”

Check whether the dashboard annualizes or normalizes the figure. Multiply the rate by the position notional and the number of payment intervals you will actually hold. Velo’s funding-spend framing is useful for this calculation, but use the exchange’s settled schedule for final accounting.

“The chart did not move during a fast market.”

Check the product’s freshness statement. CoinGlass documents a 10-second cache/update frequency for its exchange-list OI endpoint; Coinalyze says its aggregate BTC chart is not real-time; CryptoQuant Basic is daily; Velo documents updates up to 10 times per second. These are different products, not contradictory readings.

“My backtest changes when I rerun it.”

Record the exchange list, contract IDs, quote currency, weighting method and timestamp with every observation. Aggregators can add venues, revise history or change normalization, and those changes alter a historical series.

Choosing a tool by your actual workflow

Pick CoinGlass if you need breadth first

Use it when your first question is where OI and funding are concentrated across exchanges, and when rankings or heatmaps help you narrow the investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Coinalyze if Bitcoin derivatives are your primary research surface

Choose it for a compact BTC workspace, per-exchange contract detail and an API that supports current, predicted and historical funding queries.

Pick TradingView if chart context drives every decision

Choose it when you want funding on the same screen as price and technical studies, and you are willing to verify the exact symbol and aggregation mode.

Pick CryptoQuant if positioning must be explained by flows

Choose it when OI and funding are only two columns in a larger on-chain investigation. The free Basic limits favor daily, short-history studies rather than tick monitoring.

Pick Velo Data if latency and custom filtering are decisive

Choose it for live layouts, exchange selection and explicit funding normalization, while labeling predicted or updating values before using them in a trade plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable daily monitoring routine

  1. Scan breadth: use CoinGlass or an equivalent multi-exchange view to identify unusual OI or funding and the venues driving it.
  2. Verify the contract: open the venue-specific series in Coinalyze, TradingView or Velo and confirm linear/inverse type, quote currency and interval.
  3. Add context: check liquidations, basis, spot volume and, when relevant, CryptoQuant exchange-flow or reserve data.
  4. Normalize: convert funding to the same interval and document weighting, status and timestamp.
  5. Plan risk: estimate funding spend on your actual notional, define an invalidation level and account for liquidation distance.
  6. Execute and recheck: confirm the exchange’s live mark price, funding rate and next payment time immediately before submitting an order.

No dashboard guarantees a fill, an accurate liquidation estimate or a stable funding rate. The safest setup uses an aggregator for discovery, a focused chart or API for analysis and the execution exchange for final confirmation.

The Bottom Line

Start with CoinGlass for broad BTC derivatives monitoring. Move to Coinalyze for focused charts and API work, TradingView for chart-integrated indicators, CryptoQuant for on-chain context, or Velo Data for high-frequency configurable views. Whichever tool you choose, compare like with like and verify the final funding terms on the exchange where the position will exist.
