The best Steam analytics setup is layered, not a single dashboard. Use Steamworks for authoritative data from your own store account, GameDiscoverCo or VG Insights for external market estimates, and GameAnalytics or Unity Analytics for instrumented retention and in-game behavior. Keeping those data types separate prevents estimated competitor figures from being mistaken for Valve-reported results.

Which Steam analytics tool should you use?

Choose the tool according to the question you need to answer:

  • How many people wishlisted, bought, or removed my game? Use Steamworks Wishlist Reporting and the Regional Sales Report.
  • How large is a genre, how are competing games performing, and which audiences overlap? Use GameDiscoverCo for broad time series and audience intelligence, or VG Insights for a searchable Steam database and fast estimates.
  • Do players return after installing, where do they churn, and which features affect engagement? Instrument the game with GameAnalytics or Unity Analytics.

No service combines all three layers with equal authority. Steamworks is first-party store accounting for your own title. Market-intelligence products model games you do not own. Retention platforms measure events that your game sends, not store activity that Valve records.

What each data layer measures

Layer Typical questions What the data represents What it cannot establish
Steam store reporting Are wishlists growing? How many purchases followed a promotion? Which regions are responding? Your own Steam account’s wishlist and sales activity Competitor revenue or a universal wishlist-to-sales conversion rate
Market intelligence What are comparable games selling? Which genres, prices, and audiences look promising? Modeled estimates and public-market signals across games Valve’s exact accounting for another developer
In-game telemetry Do new players return on day 1, day 7, or day 30? Where do sessions or progression funnels fail? Events collected from your running game and grouped into cohorts Store wishlists unless you deliberately send that information as an event

Use a separate field or warehouse table for each layer. A first-party purchase count, an estimated competitor sale count, and a D7 retention percentage answer different questions and should never be blended into one “performance” number.

Steamworks: the authoritative baseline for your own game

What Steamworks reports

Steamworks Wishlist Reporting tracks additions, purchases, and deletions by users who have wishlisted your game. The Regional Sales Report adds country or regional breakdowns. This is the only tool in this comparison that directly represents the developer’s own Steam account data.

Wishlist reporting does not require an external analytics SDK. Your game needs a public Steam store page, after which you can use Steamworks reporting for launch planning, promotion readouts, regional demand analysis, and owned-game sales reporting.

How fresh the data is

Steamworks updates the reports daily for the previous date. The most recent day is therefore excluded while Valve processes the data. When building a daily chart, label the newest available point with its reporting date rather than treating the blank current day as zero activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical Steamworks export routine

  1. Open the Steamworks partner site and select the game’s reporting area.
  2. Export wishlist additions, purchases, and deletions for the same date range each week.
  3. Export the Regional Sales Report for the same period and retain the country or region dimension.
  4. Record list price, discount status, sale name, and campaign dates beside the metrics; these variables explain many changes in the time series.
  5. Store the raw export unchanged, then create a derived table for weekly totals, week-over-week changes, and promotion windows.
  6. Mark the latest day as pending until the previous-date update has arrived.

What Steamworks cannot forecast

Valve’s guidance is explicit: “Because everyone wishlists for different reasons, there’s no formula to accurately predict sales from wishlists.” A wishlist can represent a purchase intention, a reminder, curiosity, a free-to-play interest, or a price-watch behavior. The list itself does not reveal when or whether a person will buy.

Instead of applying a fixed conversion percentage, compare your own historical periods. Valve recommends looking back at wishlist data after a sale or promotional event and using trends to assess which communications generate interest. Compare additions, deletions, purchases, discount depth, traffic, and timing for each event. Treat the result as a planning signal for your game, not a universal law for another title.

GameDiscoverCo: market intelligence, time series, and audience overlap

What it covers

GameDiscoverCo’s official tool reference lists get_game_history, which provides Steam time series for sales, revenue, wishlists, reviews, hourly concurrent users (CCU), followers, price, active users, pre-release hype, and recommendation counts. The reference also lists tools for wishlist quality, regional breakdowns, related games, audience affinity, and fan snapshots.

Its product description presents Steam and console sales, revenue, and wishlist estimates, together with games that players and wishlisters also play. That combination makes it useful for market sizing, competitor research, genre benchmarking, positioning, and discovering adjacent audiences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to read its numbers

GameDiscoverCo figures for games you do not control are estimates or modeled market data, not first-party accounting. Whenever you quote a value, retain the observation date, geography, platform, metric definition, and methodology note. A revenue estimate for a Steam-only period should not be compared directly with a cross-platform estimate or with gross list-price multiplication.

Best uses

  • Build a competitor time series before and after a launch or major update.
  • Compare price changes with estimated sales and review growth.
  • Find related games and audience affinities for trailers, demos, or cross-promotion research.
  • Assess pre-release hype and recommendation activity alongside your own wishlist trend.
  • Use regional and “games also played” views to prioritize localization or community outreach hypotheses.

VG Insights: searchable Steam comparisons and directional estimates

What it provides

VG Insights describes its service as interactive analysis of Steam games, with sales estimates, pricing information, and a games database with filters. It is particularly practical when you need to discover comparable titles quickly, scan genre or price bands, and assemble a directional market-sizing list.

How its sales estimates are produced

Its wishlist report explains that unit-sales estimates use more than one method, including an algorithm based on internal actual-sales data and the Boxleiter method. Those methods are estimation techniques; they are not Valve-reported sales ledgers.

Before using a VG Insights number in a model, record whether it is an estimate, the observation date, and the scope. Check whether the view includes discounts, downloadable content, bundles, or free-to-play revenue. If the page does not state a scope, write “not stated” in your notes instead of inferring one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best uses and limits

  • Fast discovery: Filter games by genre, price, tags, reviews, or other available database fields.
  • Directional sizing: Create a range of plausible performance for comparable games rather than a single forecast.
  • Ranking context: Compare titles on the same platform and observation date.
  • Limit: Do not present an estimate as exact sales, and do not use it to claim another studio’s confidential revenue.

GameAnalytics: retention, cohorts, funnels, and monetization behavior

Why store data is insufficient

Steam wishlists and purchases tell you about store intent and transactions. They do not tell you whether a player completed onboarding, reached a progression milestone, returned after the first session, or abandoned a particular feature. Those questions require events emitted by the running game.

Dashboards and metric definitions

GameAnalytics describes AnalyticsIQ as offering real-time monitoring, predefined and custom dashboards, cohorts, configurable retention, engagement matrices, funnels, monetization views, and health metrics. Its retention documentation defines retention as the daily percentage of users who installed on a specific day and returned N days later. Reporting can be configured across D1 through D90 windows.

For example, a D7 cohort report groups players by install day and measures the percentage who generated the defined return event seven days later. Define that return event before comparing builds; “opened the game,” “started a match,” and “completed a level” produce different retention results.

Events worth designing before launch

  • install or first launch, with a stable anonymous player identifier
  • session_start and session_end
  • tutorial or onboarding milestones
  • first match, level completion, or equivalent core-loop events
  • progression unlocks and failure points
  • feature exposure and feature completion
  • store views, purchases, refunds, and currency spending where applicable

Keep event names, parameter types, and versioning documented. A renamed event can make a new build appear to have lost retention when the dashboard is simply receiving a different signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to choose it

Choose GameAnalytics when you need cross-platform behavior tracking, configurable retention analysis, funnels, engagement matrices, and monetization optimization in one telemetry-oriented workflow. It complements, rather than replaces, Steamworks reporting.

Unity Analytics: Unity-native retention and performance views

Available dashboards

Unity Analytics provides predefined Game Performance, Retention, and Revenue dashboards. Views can be filtered by country, version, platform, and audience. Unity documentation defines player retention as “The average percentage of players who play your game each day since installing.” Its new-player retention views include D1, D7, D14, and D30.

What you must configure

Unity Analytics still depends on event collection. Instrument install, session, progression, and monetization events, then decide which audiences and versions should be compared. A retention dashboard cannot recover events that were never sent, and a platform filter cannot correct inconsistent event definitions between builds.

Consent, privacy, and data-retention decisions belong in the implementation plan. Confirm what identifiers are collected, where data is stored, which regions require consent, and how deletion requests are handled before enabling production telemetry.

When to choose it

It is a natural choice for a Unity project when the team wants Unity-native event, audience, performance, and revenue workflows. It does not replace Steamworks’ first-party wishlist or store-sales reports, and usage-based costs should be checked for the project’s expected event volume.

A recommended implementation plan

1. Establish the Steamworks baseline

Start with a public store page and Steamworks reporting. Export a consistent weekly series containing wishlist additions, purchases, deletions, price, discounts, and regional splits. Keep the raw files and document the date convention so the previous-date reporting delay is not mistaken for a data outage.

2. Add one external market-intelligence source

Select GameDiscoverCo when broad time series, audience overlap, regional context, and related-game discovery are priorities. Select VG Insights when searchable database filters, quick competitor scans, and directional estimates are the immediate need. You can use both later, but begin with one methodology so the team learns how its estimates are constructed.

3. Define retention before instrumenting it

Write a metric specification that names the install cohort, return event, observation windows, timezone, platform, build version, and exclusion rules. At minimum, define D1, D7, and D30; add D14 or longer windows when the game’s content cadence makes them meaningful.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

4. Instrument the core loop before a playtest

Send install, session, onboarding, progression, feature, and monetization events from the first test build. Validate event delivery with a small internal cohort before relying on dashboards. If you wait until after launch, you lose the cleanest baseline for comparing tutorial and progression changes.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

5. Separate facts from estimates in storage

Use explicit columns such as data_authority, source_tool, observation_date, geography, platform, metric_definition, and methodology_notes. Mark Steamworks values as first-party and external market values as estimated. Do not average them together.

6. Review on a fixed cadence

Run a weekly store review for wishlists, purchases, deletions, price, discounts, and regions. Run a release review for retention by build, cohort, acquisition source, and progression step. Revisit competitor estimates only with their observation dates visible, because an estimate without a date is not a reproducible comparison.

How to evaluate a tool before adopting it

  • Authority: Is the value your account’s actual report, instrumented telemetry, or a modeled estimate?
  • Freshness: How often does the data update, and is there a reporting lag?
  • Coverage: Does it include wishlists, purchases, regional splits, CCU, reviews, revenue, cohorts, funnels, or only a subset?
  • Segmentation: Can you filter by country, platform, build, audience, cohort, discount window, and acquisition source?
  • Instrumentation effort: Do you need an SDK, event taxonomy, consent flow, and ongoing schema maintenance?
  • Exports and API: Can you retrieve raw data for a warehouse or spreadsheet, or are you limited to a dashboard?
  • Privacy controls: Can you document identifiers, consent, retention, deletion, and regional processing requirements?
  • Total cost: Confirm current plan limits, event-volume charges, export restrictions, and any feature gates before committing.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Applying a fixed wishlist conversion rate

There is no accurate universal formula. Use your own post-sale and post-promotion history to identify directional patterns, and report the assumptions around any scenario range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling an estimate “Steam sales”

Reserve that wording for your own Steamworks report. For GameDiscoverCo or VG Insights, say “estimated sales,” identify the observation date, and retain the scope and methodology.

Comparing unmatched scopes

A Steam-only estimate, a cross-platform estimate, and an estimate that includes downloadable content are not interchangeable. Align platform, geography, time period, product scope, and discount treatment before comparing them.

Confusing active users with retention

An active-user series can show scale or change over time. Retention is cohort-based: it asks what percentage of a defined install group returned at a defined interval. Use GameAnalytics or Unity Analytics cohorts for that question.

Changing event definitions midstream

If one build counts any launch as a return and another counts a completed match, the resulting D7 lines are not comparable. Version event schemas and annotate every definition change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring regional and reporting lag

Steamworks’ latest day is not yet available, and regional demand can differ sharply. Keep reporting dates and region labels attached to every export rather than filling missing values with zero.
