What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For repeated large-file writes, a TLC SSD is a sensible alternative to investigate—but the NAND label alone does not tell you how fast a drive will remain once its write cache fills. Compare independent long-write results for the exact model and capacity, along with compatibility, cooling, endurance, warranty, and price per usable terabyte. Samsung’s 990 PRO is one TLC NVMe model to compare, not a proven sustained-write winner.
Why consider TLC instead of QLC?
QLC stores four bits in each memory cell; TLC stores three. In its review of the 8TB Samsung 870 QVO and Sabrent Rocket Q, AnandTech describes QLC writing as slower because its denser cells require more precise voltage control. That is a technology tendency, not a guarantee that every QLC drive will perform poorly in every workload. The specific drive, capacity, cache, and transfer conditions matter.
If your workflow repeatedly writes large files, TLC is a reasonable class to compare against QLC. It is not, by itself, proof of a particular sustained speed or a prediction of drive reliability.
What to check in sustained-write tests
Look beyond peak and short-burst speeds
Many SSDs use a fast write cache. A short benchmark or the manufacturer’s “up to” sequential-write figure may describe performance while that cache is available, rather than the rate after a long transfer exhausts it. Look for an independent long sequential-write test that shows behavior across different data-set sizes and beyond the cache. PCWorld’s Addlink S22 review, for example, discusses results across data-set sizes; those results apply to that model and setup, not to SSDs as a whole.

Match the test to your workload
Check the exact capacity you plan to buy. Cache behavior and performance can vary by capacity, and results depend on the workload, host system, cooling, and source-to-destination path. A benchmark on a different capacity or under different conditions may not predict your transfer rate.
For external transfers, the enclosure and host connection can also limit performance. The drive’s advertised interface speed is not a promise that the whole external setup will reach that speed.

How to compare candidate drives
- Post-cache write behavior: Prefer independent long-write results that show what happens after the fast cache is exhausted; do not treat a burst result as sustained performance.
- Exact capacity: Compare the capacity you need, since behavior and cache can differ between capacities of the same product line.
- NAND and endurance: Use the exact model’s endurance rating and warranty alongside its NAND type. Neither a TLC label nor a TBW number alone predicts how long a particular drive will last in your workload.
- Compatibility: Confirm the form factor, interface, host support, and physical clearance, including space for any heatsink.
- Thermals and setup: Consider cooling and the full data path, especially for long transfers or an external enclosure.
- Cost: Compare current price per usable terabyte and the capacity you actually need; no current retail price is established here.
Samsung 990 PRO: a TLC model to compare, not a sustained-write verdict
Samsung’s 990 PRO datasheet identifies Samsung V-NAND TLC, an M.2 2280 form factor, and a PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 / NVMe 2.0 interface. It lists maximum sequential read and write speeds of 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. Samsung’s launch announcement also identifies the drive as 3-bit TLC.
The 6,900 MB/s figure is a manufacturer-listed maximum sequential-write specification measured under Samsung’s specified test conditions and using its caching technology. It does not establish a post-cache sustained-write rate. The available datasheet does not provide a directly comparable post-cache rate, so the peak figure is not enough to call the 990 PRO a sustained-transfer leader. Check an independent long-write test for the exact capacity and a setup relevant to yours.

Capacity, endurance, and warranty
The datasheet gives the following product endurance ratings and a five-year limited warranty:
| 990 PRO capacity | Rated endurance |
|---|---|
| 1TB | 600 TBW |
| 2TB | 1,200 TBW |
| 4TB | 2,400 TBW |
TBW is the product’s rated write endurance, not a forecast of an individual user’s drive life. Confirm the warranty terms for the exact SKU you are considering.

Check fit and platform support
Before buying, verify that your system supports an M.2 2280 NVMe drive, has the required PCIe capability, and provides adequate heatsink clearance. A compatible drive can still be limited by the host or cooling during a long transfer. For an external workflow, account for the enclosure and host connection as well; no particular enclosure is established as a recommendation here.

- Identify the job: Estimate the largest repeated write and the capacity you need, including room for your files and workflow.
- Shortlist exact models and capacities: Treat TLC as a useful comparison class, not an automatic performance guarantee.
- Find long-write evidence: Seek an independent test showing behavior beyond cache for the exact capacity. Separate that result from peak sequential specifications and short-burst benchmarks.
- Confirm the setup: Check the drive’s form factor and interface against your system, then account for cooling and the source-to-destination path.
- Compare ownership terms: Review the exact SKU’s TBW rating and warranty, then weigh current price per usable terabyte against the capacity and sustained behavior you need.
If you are choosing the 990 PRO, the Samsung datasheet confirms TLC, interface, peak specifications, and capacity-specific TBW ratings, but not its post-cache sustained-write rate. The right capacity or best-value choice depends on your platform, budget, and a relevant long-write comparison.
