There is no single best social media management tool for every business. For an established company that needs publishing, approvals, a unified inbox, reporting, customer care, and reputation management, Sprout Social is the strongest overall choice. Hootsuite is the better enterprise-scale option, Buffer is the simplest affordable choice for small teams, Metricool offers exceptional value for analytics and multiple brands, and SocialPilot is especially attractive to agencies.

If you mainly publish to Facebook and Instagram, start with Meta Business Suite before paying for a third-party platform. A scheduler becomes worth the cost when you need cross-network planning, approvals, client access, consolidated reporting, social listening, or a serious customer-care workflow.

This comparison reflects documented product features and U.S. pricing available for an August 10, 2026 snapshot. Prices are generally annual-billing prices before tax and can change, so verify the vendor page before subscribing. The recommendations are editorial judgments based on feature coverage and pricing structure, not claims of independent hands-on testing.

Quick recommendations

Tool Best for Public starting price Why choose it Main qualification
Planable Teams and agencies that need client approval before publishing From about $33 per workspace per month annually Per-workspace pricing, realistic post previews, optional, required and multi-level approval, client review without an account, public API and MCP No white-label; analytics, inbox, and listening are add-ons
Sprout Social Established businesses and mature social teams $79/seat/month annually for Essentials; Standard is $199/seat/month Strong publishing, inbox, approvals, analytics, review management, reporting, and integrations Expensive, particularly when several employees need seats
Hootsuite Enterprise-scale operations and broad monitoring $99/user/month annually Broad network support, inbox, listening, competitor benchmarking, bulk scheduling, AI, and enterprise add-ons Advanced enterprise capabilities may require higher tiers, add-ons, or a sales-led plan
Buffer Solo operators and small businesses Free; Essentials from $5/channel/month annually Simple interface, transparent per-channel pricing, scheduling, analytics, inbox, and approvals on Team Per-channel costs rise as the number of channels grows; limited listening and customer care
Metricool Analytics, competitor tracking, ads, and multiple brands Free; Starter from $25/month Strong value across scheduling, reporting, competitor analysis, ads, Google Business Profile, API, and MCP access X and advanced analytics can be add-ons; some advanced reports are plan-gated
SocialPilot Agencies and budget-conscious client teams $25.50/month annually for Essentials Account-based pricing, approvals, bulk scheduling, white-label reports, and multiple users on higher tiers Not a full social-listening or enterprise customer-care platform
Later Visual brands, Instagram, TikTok, creators, and UGC $18.75/month annually Visual planning, link-in-bio, creator and UGC workflows, approvals, and visual analytics Many Instagram-native features still require notification publishing
Agorapulse Community management and social inbox work $79/user/month annually Unified inbox, assignments, saved replies, moderation, reports, competitor benchmarking, and ROI reporting Per-user pricing and shared profile limits can become expensive
Sendible Agencies needing unlimited users and client workspaces See current vendor pricing Workspace-based organization, unlimited users, publishing, reports, approvals, and broad network coverage No Instagram direct messages; Google Business Profile reporting is unavailable
Loomly Editorial calendars and controlled approval workflows $49/month annually Strong calendar, post ideas, previews, roles, approvals, analytics, and client-facing workflows Less suitable when deep listening or advanced customer care is central
Zoho Social Businesses already using Zoho CRM or Zoho Desk Regional pricing; see vendor page Broad channel coverage plus CRM, Desk, lead-generation, approval, and agency features Pricing varies by region; the free edition has limited scheduling functionality
Native platform tools Businesses focused on one or two networks Free First-party publishing, permissions, insights, and platform-specific features No unified cross-network calendar, inbox, or reporting layer

The short version: choose Sprout Social as the primary recommendation for an established business, Buffer as the lower-cost alternative when simplicity matters, Meta Business Suite as the free/native option, and Hootsuite or Sprout’s higher tiers as the upgrade path when social becomes an enterprise customer-care, governance, or listening operation. If analytics and multiple brands are the real priority, substitute Metricool for Buffer.

What social media management software actually includes

Social media management is a broad category. Some products are excellent schedulers but weak at customer care; others are inbox and listening systems with publishing attached. Before comparing logos, separate the jobs the software must perform.

  • Scheduling and publishing: creating posts, selecting times, adapting copy and media for each network, and publishing automatically or through a mobile notification.
  • Content calendar management: viewing campaigns, drafts, scheduled posts, holidays, assets, and publishing status in one calendar.
  • Social inbox and community management: handling comments, mentions, direct messages, reviews, assignments, saved replies, moderation, and response-time workflows.
  • Social listening: monitoring public conversations, keywords, locations, sentiment, brand mentions, competitors, and unusual spikes. Monitoring owned comments and messages is not the same as broad social listening.
  • Analytics and reporting: collecting native metrics, comparing networks, tracking campaigns, exporting reports, measuring paid and organic performance, and connecting activity to traffic or revenue.
  • Approval workflows: routing drafts to managers, clients, legal, or compliance reviewers. A basic approval button is not necessarily a legal archive or formal regulatory review system.
  • Asset governance: storing images, video, captions, brand guidance, permissions, and reusable content in libraries.
  • AI assistance: generating copy, images, replies, alt text, recommendations, sentiment summaries, or analytics explanations. AI features do not by themselves prove quality, accuracy, brand safety, or return on investment.
  • Commerce and link-in-bio: connecting posts to landing pages, product destinations, tracked URLs, or a visual storefront.
  • Business integrations: connecting to CRM, help-desk, marketing automation, advertising, reporting, API, Zapier, Make, Looker Studio, or MCP workflows.
  • Reputation and review management: collecting and responding to reviews, often particularly important for local and multi-location businesses.
  • Enterprise operations: SSO, role-based access, auditability, employee advocacy, social selling, crisis controls, data retention, and support.

A tool that publishes to 12 networks may still be a poor fit if it lacks the inbox, approval history, reporting export, or CRM integration your team actually needs.

Detailed reviews

1. Planable: best for approval-driven content workflows

Planable is a social media management tool built around review and approval rather than around publishing volume or listening. Each client or brand occupies a separate workspace, every post renders as a channel-accurate preview of the live network, and content routes through a defined approval stage before publication. It supports Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, and Threads.

Current pricing

  • Free trial: 50 posts in total, no time limit, no credit card. This is a capped trial rather than a permanent free plan.
  • Basic: from about $33 per workspace per month with annual billing; four channels per workspace.
  • Pro: 10 channels per workspace, adding grid view, required approval, and internal comments hidden from clients.
  • Enterprise: unlimited channels, multi-level approval, and list view; custom pricing.
  • Add-ons: analytics with competitor benchmarking across five networks, social listening, and the social inbox are priced separately from the base plan.

Pricing is charged per workspace rather than per seat or per channel, so adding a strategist, an external reviewer, or the client themselves does not change the bill. That is the structural difference from the per-seat products below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose it

Planable is defensible when the bottleneck is sign-off rather than publishing throughput. Approval is a workspace setting rather than an enterprise upgrade: optional and required sign-off are available on paid plans, and multi-level sign-off — legal followed by the client, for example — is on Enterprise. Clients and approvers review from a shareable link without creating an account or consuming a seat, and internal comments remain invisible to clients. Calendar, feed, and grid views cover both planning and feed-level review, and CSV import handles up to 400 posts per upload. A public API, Zapier, Slack, and Canva integrations, and MCP connections to Claude and ChatGPT allow drafting, editing, and approval under the same permissions a person holds.

Limitations

There is no white-label option at any tier, so an agency that needs the platform to carry its own brand should look elsewhere. Social listening, competitor benchmarking across five networks, and the social inbox are add-ons rather than base-plan features, so model those into the monthly cost rather than assuming the headline price covers them. Collaboration and approval are the product’s core, which means a solo operator scheduling to two channels would not use most of what they were paying for.

Best alternative: Loomly for a comparable editorial-calendar and approval emphasis, or SocialPilot when account-based agency pricing and white-label reports matter more.

2. Sprout Social: best overall for established businesses

Sprout Social is the strongest default recommendation when social media is both a marketing channel and a customer-care or reputation-management function. It combines publishing, a consolidated inbox, approval workflows, asset libraries, bulk scheduling, campaign tagging, URL tracking, review management, competitor reports, network reports, Google Analytics reporting, and customer-care workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current pricing

  • Essentials: $79 per seat per month with annual billing, or $99 monthly; up to five social profiles.
  • Standard: $199 per seat per month annually; five social profiles.
  • Professional: $299 per seat per month annually; unlimited social profiles.
  • Advanced: $399 per seat per month annually; unlimited social profiles.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

Standard adds a consolidated inbox, collaboration, keyword and location monitoring, AI-generated alt text, and review management. Professional adds message tagging, competitor, tag, and paid insights, plus AI post assistance. Advanced adds AI-assisted replies, sentiment, API and help-desk integrations, customer-care reporting, and message-spike alerts. Check the current pricing and feature comparison for the exact packaging before purchase.

Why choose it

Sprout is a good fit for a business that needs one operational system for content, engagement, reporting, customer support, and reputation. It is particularly defensible when several people need permissions and approvals, executives need polished reports, or customer-care data must connect to help-desk workflows.

Limitations

The price is the decisive limitation. Essentials may be adequate for a small profile set, but a team that needs more than five profiles or advanced operational features can quickly move into the $299 or $399 per-seat tiers. A solo operator should not buy Sprout merely to schedule posts. Confirm which listening, API, customer-care, and integration features are included in the quoted plan rather than assuming the product’s broad feature list applies to every tier.

Best alternative: Metricool for analytics and multiple brands at a much lower starting price, or Agorapulse when the central need is inbox and community management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Hootsuite: best for enterprise-scale social operations

Hootsuite is a strong choice for larger organizations that need broad account coverage, publishing, inbox management, listening, competitor benchmarking, bulk scheduling, AI assistance, and enterprise controls. Its Standard documentation lists support for Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, and Pinterest, with publishing, analytics, inbox, listening, AI insights, and best-time-to-post features.

Current pricing

  • Standard: $99 per user per month annually; up to 10 social accounts.
  • Professional: $199 per user per month annually; unlimited social accounts.
  • Advanced: $399 per user per month annually; unlimited social accounts.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

Standard includes unlimited scheduling, AI content assistance, a unified inbox, direct-message automation, seven-day brand and competitor mention search, sentiment analysis, and benchmarking against five competitors. Advanced adds bulk scheduling for up to 350 posts, saved replies, routing and tagging, scheduled reports, and benchmarking against 20 competitors.

Enterprise capabilities documented by Hootsuite include SSO, advanced Talkwalker-powered listening, advanced analytics and inbox features, employee advocacy, social selling, Salesforce integration, compliance integrations, and a generative AI chatbot. Those capabilities may require a custom agreement or add-on.

Why choose it

Hootsuite makes more sense than a lightweight scheduler when multiple departments, many accounts, monitoring, benchmarking, and enterprise governance are involved. It is also a reasonable upgrade for a company that has outgrown a simple calendar but does not want to assemble separate publishing, listening, and reporting systems.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations

Hootsuite is usually excessive for a business that only needs a few scheduled posts and basic analytics. The pricing is per user, so a team can spend substantially more than the headline price. Enterprise listening, compliance, Salesforce, and advanced security should be quoted rather than inferred from the Standard plan.

Best alternative: Sprout Social for a more integrated customer-care and reputation-management workflow, or Buffer for a much simpler small-team setup.

4. Buffer: best simple and affordable choice for small businesses

Buffer is the easiest recommendation for an owner-operator or small marketing team that wants a clean publishing workflow without enterprise complexity. It supports LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, YouTube, X, Google Business Profile, Instagram, Mastodon, TikTok, and Facebook.

Current pricing

  • Free: up to three channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, and one user.
  • Essentials: $5 per month for one channel with annual billing; unlimited scheduled posts, advanced analytics, first-comment scheduling, hashtag management, and one user.
  • Team: $10 per month for one channel with annual billing; unlimited team members, access levels, content approvals, advanced analytics, and community inbox.

Buffer’s free plan includes AI assistance, insights, API access, and a community inbox, but the 10-post-per-channel limit makes it a starter plan rather than an unlimited free scheduler.

Why choose it

Per-channel pricing is easy to understand when a business manages only a few profiles. Buffer is a sensible first paid tool for a three-channel business, especially if the workflow is mainly planning, scheduling, and reviewing basic performance. Team adds access levels and approvals without forcing a large enterprise subscription.

Limitations

Per-channel billing becomes less attractive as the number of channels increases. Buffer is not the right choice for deep listening, sophisticated crisis response, extensive customer-care routing, or enterprise governance. Its Instagram publishing is also subject to the same platform restrictions that affect other third-party tools.

Best alternative: Metricool when competitor analysis, ads, Google Business Profile, and historical reporting matter more than the simplest interface.

5. Metricool: best value for analytics and multi-brand management

Metricool packs scheduling, analytics, competitor tracking, reporting, advertising, inbox features, Google Business Profile, and automation access into a comparatively affordable product. It supports Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Facebook Ads, Google Ads, and TikTok Ads.

Current pricing

  • Free: $0; one brand, up to 20 scheduled posts per month, five competitor profiles, 30 days of analytics, AI assistant, and MCP access.
  • Starter: from $25 per month; up to 10 brands, unlimited publishing, up to 100 competitor profiles, LinkedIn connection, PDF and PowerPoint reports, and unlimited analytics history.
  • Advanced: from $54 per month; up to 50 brands, team and client management, roles, approvals, custom report templates, Looker Studio, API, and Zapier.
  • Custom: tailored pricing.

X is listed as a $10-per-month add-on per connected account, and Advanced Analytics is also an add-on. Channel and feature limits vary by plan, so count the brands, X accounts, reports, and connections before comparing the headline price.

Why choose it

Metricool is one of the strongest value recommendations for marketers who care about cross-network analytics, competitor comparisons, paid campaigns, reports, and multiple brands. The permanent free plan is useful for testing, although its posting and history limits are substantial. Advanced is especially relevant to agencies and teams needing roles, approvals, custom reports, Looker Studio, API, and Zapier.

Limitations

Metricool is not a substitute for a high-end social-care or listening platform. Some network actions are constrained by APIs, and X and advanced analytics can increase the bill. A business should also confirm whether each Google Business Profile location counts as a separate brand; Metricool documents that it does.

Best alternative: Buffer for a simpler publishing-first workflow, or Sprout Social for more sophisticated customer care and governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. SocialPilot: best predictable agency value

SocialPilot is well suited to agencies and freelancers that need client approvals, account-based pricing, multiple users, bulk scheduling, analytics, and white-label reports. Its own comparison material positions the product as a publishing, management, reporting, and agency-workflow platform rather than a full social-listening system.

Current pricing

  • Essentials: $25.50 per month annually, or $30 monthly; seven social accounts, one user, and 500 AI credits.
  • Standard: $42.50 per month annually, or $50 monthly; 15 accounts, three users, inbox, analytics, collaboration, and manager approval.
  • Premium: $85 per month annually, or $100 monthly; 25 accounts, six users, bulk scheduling, advanced analytics, client approval, and white-label reports.
  • Ultimate: $170 per month annually, or $200 monthly; 50 accounts, unlimited users, advanced security, advanced white-label features, and a dedicated account manager.

Additional accounts cost $4 per month, and additional users cost $5 per month on applicable plans.

Why choose it

SocialPilot’s account-based model can be more predictable than per-seat pricing when an agency has several clients but a relatively small internal team. Premium is a particularly practical middle ground for 15 to 25 profiles, client approvals, and branded reporting.

Limitations

Do not describe SocialPilot as a replacement for Brandwatch, Talkwalker, Sprout Listening, or another dedicated monitoring product. Its strengths are publishing, reporting, and agency workflow. Teams that need complex customer-care cases, broad public listening, or extensive CRM integration should shortlist a second product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best alternative: Sendible when unlimited users and separate client workspaces matter most, or Metricool Advanced when analytics and API access are the priority.

7. Later: best for visual brands, creators, Instagram, and TikTok

Later is strongest for visual planning and creator-oriented workflows. It combines a visual calendar, link-in-bio tools, social sets, smart scheduling, approvals, UGC collection, brand mentions, competitive benchmarking, and visual analytics. Supported networks include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Snapchat.

Current pricing

  • Starter: $18.75 per month annually; one social set, eight profiles, one user, 30 posts per profile, three months of analytics, link-in-bio, and five AI credits.
  • Growth: $37.50 per month annually; two social sets, 16 profiles, two users, 180 posts per profile, social inbox, one year of analytics, approvals, UGC collection, and 50 AI credits.
  • Scale: $82.50 per month annually; six social sets, 48 profiles, four users, unlimited posts, custom analytics, competitive benchmarking, brand mentions, two years of analytics, and 100 AI credits.

Later’s Auto Publish supports Instagram professional profiles, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, and LinkedIn, but account type and content format determine whether automatic publishing is available.

Why choose it

Later is a strong fit when the content operation revolves around Reels, Stories, TikTok videos, creator submissions, UGC, visual previews, and a link-in-bio destination. Growth is more useful than Starter for teams that need approvals, UGC collection, inbox features, and more historical analytics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations

Instagram music, stickers, polls, quizzes, Story links, native effects, automatic captions, some audio, and other native features may require notification publishing. Instagram carousels are limited to 10 media items in Later. A text-heavy B2B team or customer-care department may get more value from Buffer, Loomly, Agorapulse, or Sprout.

Best alternative: Metricool for broader analytics and advertising, or Buffer for a less visual and more general-purpose scheduler.

8. Agorapulse: best lower-cost community-management alternative

Agorapulse is a good choice when replying to comments and messages is as important as publishing. It supports Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, TikTok, Bluesky, and Reddit.

Current pricing

  • Standard: $79 per user per month annually, or $99 monthly.
  • Professional: $119 per user per month annually, or $149 monthly.
  • Advanced: $149 per user per month annually, or $199 monthly.
  • Custom: tailored pricing.

The standard, professional, and advanced plans include 10 shared social-profile slots. Additional profiles cost $10 per month each annually or $15 monthly. Each additional user is charged at the same plan rate, according to Agorapulse’s pricing explanation.

  • Clear and Convenient: The bold, bright white and long-lasting characters make the keys on this PC or laptop keyboard easy to read and extra durable

Depending on tier, features include inbox management, organic comments, assignments, saved replies, moderation rules, reporting, ad reports, ROI analysis, and competitor benchmarking.

Why choose it

Agorapulse is a strong alternative to Sprout for a team that needs a practical unified inbox, assignments, moderation, response workflows, and team reports without immediately moving to Sprout’s higher per-seat pricing.

Limitations

Per-user pricing can become expensive for larger teams, while the 10 shared profile slots may not fit a multi-brand organization. Its official pages currently describe conflicting trial lengths: the pricing page advertises 30 days, while help documentation describes 15 days. Check the current terms at signup rather than relying on either figure.

Best alternative: Sprout Social for broader customer-care and reputation operations, or SocialPilot when client publishing and white-label reports matter more than inbox depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Sendible: best for unlimited users and separated client workspaces

Sendible organizes agency work around workspaces. Core includes one workspace, Plus three, Premium seven, Elite 15, and Enterprise 50. Each workspace includes six social profiles, and all plans include unlimited users. Supported networks include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, YouTube, WordPress, Threads, and Bluesky.

The platform includes publishing, content calendars, reports, monitoring, approvals on higher plans, and client or brand workspaces. That structure can be more natural for agencies than a single shared brand list.

Important limitations

  • Instagram direct messages are not supported.
  • Google Business Profile posts can be scheduled, but Sendible does not provide Google Business Profile reporting.
  • Instagram video carousels may require notification reminders rather than direct publishing.
  • Daily posting limits apply to comply with social-network policies.

Because the supplied current product facts do not include reliable public dollar figures for each Sendible tier, use the official pricing page for the live quote. The important comparison is the model: workspace limits, six profiles per workspace, and unlimited users.

Best alternative: SocialPilot for transparent public agency pricing, or Loomly for a stronger editorial calendar and approval emphasis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Loomly: best editorial calendar and approval workflow

Loomly is designed around content production rather than deep social listening. It offers calendars, post planning, content ideas, previews, roles, approvals, scheduling, analytics, and client-facing workflows.

Current pricing

  • Starter: $49 per month annually, or $65 monthly; 12 social accounts, three users, unlimited calendars, AI assistant, approvals, roles, scheduling, and advanced analytics.
  • Beyond: $249 per month annually, or $332 monthly; 60 accounts and unlimited users, with custom branding, custom roles, workflows, hashtag management, and calendar security.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing for 61 or more accounts.

Loomly is a good choice for a team that needs a controlled editorial process, client previews, and clear approval stages. It is less suitable when public conversation monitoring, complex inbox routing, or advanced customer care is the central requirement.

Best alternative: SocialPilot for agency pricing and white-label reports, or Agorapulse for inbox-led community management.

11. Zoho Social: best for businesses already using Zoho

Zoho Social is most compelling when the business already relies on Zoho CRM, Zoho Desk, or the wider Zoho ecosystem. Depending on plan, it supports Facebook Pages, X, Instagram Business Profiles, LinkedIn profiles and company pages, Google Business Profile, YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok, Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, WhatsApp Business, and Telegram Business.

Higher plans add bulk scheduling, inbox features, approvals, custom reports, roles, UTM parameters, Zoho CRM and Zoho Desk integrations, lead generation, client portals, and agency reporting.

Zoho states that pricing varies by region. Its help documentation also says the free edition does not support scheduling posts, so do not assume that the free tier is equivalent to a free scheduler. Verify the plan and regional currency on the current pricing page.

Best alternative: Metricool for a platform-neutral analytics value, or Sprout Social and Hootsuite for more mature enterprise social operations.

Free native tools: when you should not buy a third-party suite

Many small businesses pay for a scheduler before establishing whether they need one. Official platform tools are often sufficient when the business focuses on one or two networks and has no need for a shared cross-channel calendar.

Use it when: Facebook and Instagram are the main channels and native insights are enough.

Move to paid software when: you need LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, or Google Business Profile in the same calendar; client approvals; unified reporting; broader listening; or cross-network customer care.

Automatic publishing is conditional, especially on Instagram

The phrase supports Instagram is too vague to guide a purchase. A tool may support Instagram feed posts but not every Story feature, or it may support automatic publishing for ordinary media but require a human for a Reel containing native music.

Auto-publishing versus notification publishing

  • Auto-publishing: the management platform sends the post through the network’s approved connection without a person opening the native app.
  • Notification publishing: the platform prepares the media and caption, sends a phone notification, and requires a person to finish publication inside Instagram or TikTok.

Instagram automatic publishing generally requires a professional Business or Creator account. Personal accounts cannot use automatic publishing in Buffer, and Later documents the same professional-account requirement. See Buffer’s Instagram publishing limitations and Later’s Auto Publish requirements.

Native music, stickers, polls, quizzes, Story links, effects, automatic captions, some audio, product tags, collaboration posts, and other interactive features can force notification publishing. Later documents these Instagram restrictions, while Buffer documents additional cases including unsupported aspect ratios and certain Reel lengths. Metricool documents comparable restrictions for Instagram Stories, Reels, TikTok effects, music, and stickers.

Before subscribing, test the exact formats your team publishes:

Do not assume the scheduler can add platform-native audio or stickers after the post has been sent. Those elements commonly require final editing in the native app.

What to do when a post does not publish

  1. Check whether the item is marked auto-published, notification-based, queued, failed, or sent.
  2. Open the tool’s mobile app and confirm that push notifications are enabled.
  3. Open the scheduled item and complete the native-app publishing action.
  4. Add platform-native music, stickers, links, polls, or effects inside the social app if required.
  5. Verify the result natively on the network rather than trusting a generic sent status.
  6. Check the management tool for duplicate or failed status before rescheduling.

Metricool specifically says that after a manual-publishing notification has been sent, the post cannot simply be changed to automatic publishing. Its recommended recovery is to duplicate the post, enable auto-publishing on the duplicate, and remove networks where the item was already published. See Metricool’s troubleshooting guidance.

Expired or revoked connections

OAuth connections can break after a password change, administrator change, modified Business Manager permissions, a revoked app permission, or a changed Page relationship. When a scheduled post suddenly fails:

  1. Check the account-connection status in the management platform.
  2. Reauthorize the affected network.
  3. Confirm the correct Facebook Business Manager, Page, Instagram professional account, or business asset is selected.
  4. Verify that the connecting user still has the required administrator permission.
  5. Publish a low-risk test post.
  6. Review future scheduled posts for failed, draft, or notification status.

How to compare the real price

Entry pricing is not comparable until you model your own users, profiles, brands, locations, and required features. Social software commonly charges by seat, channel, profile, brand, workspace, or a mixture of these.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pricing models to identify

  • Per seat: Sprout Social, Hootsuite, and Agorapulse charge according to users or seats on many plans.
  • Per channel: Buffer’s paid plans are primarily priced per social channel.
  • Per brand or profile: Metricool and several other products count brands, profiles, or connected accounts.
  • Per workspace: Sendible bundles six profiles into each workspace and allows unlimited users.
  • Per account package: SocialPilot uses account limits with user limits by plan.
  • Per social set: Later groups profiles into social sets.
  • Regional or custom pricing: Zoho Social varies by region, while enterprise plans commonly require a quote.

Also account for extra profiles, users, workspaces, listening, advanced analytics, API access, Looker Studio, Zapier, white-label reports, AI credits, historical data, client reviewers, annual-billing commitments, tax, and currency conversion.

Illustrative cost scenarios

The following examples use public annual-billing prices where the dossier provides them. They are comparisons of plan structure, not a guarantee of a final invoice.

Business situation Potential fit Illustrative monthly price What the example means
One person, three channels Buffer Essentials $15 $5 per channel for three channels, annual billing; Buffer Free may be sufficient if 10 queued posts per channel is enough.
One person, eight channels Buffer Essentials $40 $5 per channel for eight channels, annual billing; Team would be about $80 if team approvals and inbox features are needed.
One person, eight profiles Hootsuite Standard $99 Up to 10 social accounts on one annual-billed user seat.
Three-person team, eight profiles Buffer Team $80 $10 per channel for eight channels annually; the Team plan includes unlimited team members, but confirm current packaging.
Three-person team, eight profiles Sprout Professional $897 Three seats at $299 annually; Professional is the listed tier with unlimited social profiles. Standard’s five-profile limit would not fit eight profiles.
Agency, 15 profiles, five users SocialPilot Premium $85 Premium covers 25 accounts and six users, with client approval and white-label reports.
Agency, 15 profiles, five users Agorapulse Standard About $445 Five users at $79 equals $395, plus five additional profile slots at $10 each; verify the exact account configuration and current billing.
Agency, 15 profiles, five users Sendible Plus Live quote required Three workspaces provide 18 included profiles, and users are unlimited; the supplied facts do not provide a reliable current dollar figure.
Enterprise, 25 profiles, three users Sprout Advanced $1,197 Three seats at $399 annually and unlimited profiles; confirm whether required listening or integrations are included or quoted separately.
Enterprise, 25 profiles, three users Hootsuite Advanced $1,197 Three users at $399 annually and unlimited accounts; enterprise listening, compliance, and other advanced requirements may need custom pricing.
20 Google Business Profile locations Metricool Advanced From $54 Metricool lists Advanced at up to 50 brands, but each Google Business Profile location is treated as a separate brand and add-ons or exact brand allocation must be checked.

These examples show why the cheapest advertised plan is not necessarily the cheapest workable plan. A five-person team may pay more for seats than a two-person team with the same profile count, while an agency can benefit from account-based or unlimited-user pricing.

Platform coverage: count capabilities, not logos

List every required channel before comparing products:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Instagram and Facebook
  • TikTok
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube
  • Pinterest
  • X
  • Threads
  • Bluesky
  • Google Business Profile
  • Snapchat
  • Reddit
  • WhatsApp or Telegram where relevant

Then ask what support means for each one:

  • Can the tool publish feed posts, Reels, Stories, carousels, Shorts, videos, and documents?
  • Does it support first comments, product tags, mentions, music, stickers, polls, links, and native effects?
  • Can it reply to comments and direct messages?
  • Does it report organic, paid, story, video, and conversion metrics?
  • Can it schedule ads or only organic posts?
  • Does it support business profiles only, or personal accounts too?
  • Is publication automatic, notification-based, or unavailable?

For example, Sendible supports Google Business Profile scheduling but not reporting in Sendible. Later supports a broad set of visual networks, but Instagram-native features can require manual completion. Metricool documents network-specific publishing, inbox, and reporting limitations because the underlying APIs do not expose every native action. See Metricool’s API limitations reference.

Cross-posting also requires platform-specific editing. Character limits, link behavior, hashtags, image dimensions, video duration, mentions, first comments, and calls to action differ by network. Metricool maintains a network character-limit reference; use it as a reminder to customize rather than blindly duplicate one caption everywhere.

Analytics, reporting, and attribution

Third-party reporting is useful, but it should not automatically replace native analytics. Networks change metric definitions, expose different data through their APIs, update at different times, separate paid and organic activity differently, and limit historical data after a connection is established.

Stories, Reels, ads, deleted posts, and competitor data may also be handled differently. Use native analytics as the source of truth for platform-specific performance and use the management platform for cross-network trends, workflow reporting, consistent campaign tags, and exported reports.

A serious buyer should test:

  • Publishing success rate and clarity of failed-post errors
  • Time required to adapt one post for several networks
  • Approval turnaround and reviewer notifications
  • Inbox response time and escalation visibility
  • Native-versus-third-party metric differences
  • UTM parameters and conversion attribution
  • Scheduled PDF, PowerPoint, CSV, API, or Looker Studio exports
  • Competitor and campaign reporting
  • Historical-data retention after connection

Do not choose a tool solely because it promises AI captions. AI copy is easy to replicate; reliable publishing, permissions, clear failure states, reporting, integrations, and customer-care workflows are more consequential business capabilities.

Which tool fits each type of business?

Solo owner or very small business

Choose Buffer if simplicity, low cost, and scheduling across a few channels are the priorities. Choose Metricool if competitor tracking, analytics, Google Business Profile, advertising, or multiple brands matter more. Start with Meta Business Suite if the business mainly uses Facebook and Instagram.

A solo operator should generally avoid Sprout Social or Hootsuite unless social customer care, advanced reporting, governance, or reputation management directly justifies the cost.

Small in-house marketing team

Shortlist Buffer Team, Metricool Advanced, Later Growth, Loomly Starter, SocialPilot Standard, and Agorapulse Standard or Professional. Match the tool to the bottleneck:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Calendar simplicity: Buffer or Loomly
  • Analytics and competitor tracking: Metricool
  • Visual content and UGC: Later
  • Inbox management: Agorapulse
  • Budget-conscious approvals and collaboration: SocialPilot

Agency or freelancer

Shortlist SocialPilot, Sendible, Metricool Advanced, Agorapulse, Loomly, and Later Growth or Scale for visual clients. Prioritize the number of client brands, team members, external reviewers, white-label reports, separate workspaces, client permissions, and whether listening is included or requires another tool.

SocialPilot is usually the clearest value when predictable account-based pricing and branded reports matter. Sendible is attractive when unlimited users and separated workspaces matter more than Instagram direct messages or Google Business Profile reporting.

Enterprise or regulated organization

Shortlist Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Agorapulse Custom, and Zoho Social Premium or Agency if the organization already uses Zoho. Later Scale or an enterprise offering may be appropriate for a visual global brand.

Require evidence of SSO, role-based permissions, approval and audit trails, data retention and export, help-desk or CRM integration, customer-care reporting, crisis-publishing controls, listening and spike alerts, legal or compliance review, contractual support, and onboarding. Sprout documents enterprise security, permissions, API, help-desk, and customer-care capabilities in its security documentation. Hootsuite documents SSO, compliance integrations, Salesforce, advanced listening, and enterprise support on its Enterprise page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local or multi-location business

Prioritize Google Business Profile support, location-specific calendars, per-location permissions, review management, consolidated reporting, and the ability to retain location-level detail.

Metricool treats each Google Business Profile location as a separate brand, while combined reporting can be built through Looker Studio on Advanced. Sendible supports Google Business Profile scheduling but says reporting is not available in Sendible and must be accessed natively.

A transparent buying rubric

Use this weighting to score shortlisted tools. It is an editorial framework, not an industry standard.

Criterion Suggested weight What to inspect
Publishing reliability and format support 25% Auto-publishing, notification workflows, Reels, Stories, carousels, video, native features, failure reporting
Collaboration and approvals 20% Users, roles, permissions, drafts, external approvals, audit trails, client access
Inbox and customer care 15% Comments, DMs, assignments, saved replies, moderation, cases, review management
Analytics and reporting 15% Native metrics, exports, scheduled reports, competitor benchmarking, UTM and ROI support
Network coverage 10% Required networks and business-profile support, not merely a logo list
Total cost of ownership 10% Seats, profiles, workspaces, add-ons, AI credits, annual commitments
Security and integrations 5% SSO, API, CRM, help desk, DAM, Zapier, Make, MCP, and least-privilege permissions

How to choose in 15 minutes

  1. Write down every required network. Include Google Business Profile locations and less common channels such as Reddit, Snapchat, WhatsApp, or Telegram if they matter.
  2. Count profiles, brands, and locations. Determine whether each location is billed separately.
  3. Count internal users and external reviewers. A client who only approves content may still require access or a paid seat.
  4. Decide whether customer care is part of the job. If staff must assign messages, moderate comments, answer DMs, or manage reviews, a publishing-only tool is insufficient.
  5. Decide whether listening is required. Monitoring owned comments is not broad public listening. Ask which networks, keywords, competitors, locations, sentiment features, and historical periods are included.
  6. Identify the approval standard. Simple manager approval, client signoff, or formal legal and compliance review are different requirements.
  7. Choose the content priority. Visual brands should inspect Stories, Reels, UGC, link-in-bio, and native creative features. B2B teams may prioritize LinkedIn documents, approvals, and reporting.
  8. Check integrations. Verify CRM, help desk, UTM, API, Looker Studio, Zapier, Make, MCP, Salesforce, or employee-advocacy requirements.
  9. Model the bill. Include seats, profiles, workspaces, add-ons, white-label reports, extra analytics, and annual-billing commitments.
  10. Test the worst-case post. Schedule a post containing the native feature most important to your team and observe whether it publishes automatically, requires a notification, or fails clearly.

Trial and implementation checklist

Do not evaluate a platform only by how attractive its calendar looks. During a trial or initial subscription, connect one representative account from each required network and test:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One ordinary image post
  • One Reel or TikTok video
  • One carousel
  • One Story with a native element such as music, sticker, poll, quiz, or link
  • One platform-specific caption variation
  • One approval workflow with an internal reviewer
  • One external client or guest approval, if relevant
  • One inbox assignment and saved reply
  • One moderation rule or escalation
  • One report export and one scheduled report
  • One UTM-tracked link
  • One deliberately invalid or unsupported post to see how clearly the tool reports failure
  • One account reconnection after changing the test user’s permission

Record how long it takes to prepare a post, adapt it for each network, obtain approval, respond to a message, export a report, and recover from a failed publication. Those operational times are more meaningful than a long feature list.

Common claims that need qualification

  • Best overall: an editorial conclusion, not an objective industry fact.
  • AI-powered: does not establish output quality, accuracy, brand safety, or ROI.
  • Unlimited: may exclude profiles, users, reports, API calls, AI credits, historical data, or fair-use allowances.
  • Supports a network: must be qualified by account type, format, publishing method, inbox coverage, and analytics coverage.
  • Free: may mean free forever, free with posting limits, free after a trial, or free only through native platform tools.
  • Enterprise-ready: should require evidence of SSO, permissions, security, auditability, support, and integrations—not merely a custom plan.
  • Social listening: should be distinguished from monitoring owned comments and messages.
  • Analytics: should specify whether metrics are native, modeled, historical, paid, organic, campaign-level, competitor-level, or exportable.
  • Auto-publishing: should always be qualified by account type and content format.

Comparison pages can also mix direct social-management suites with scheduling tools, visual planners, listening systems, brand-monitoring products, review-management services, content-creation software, and adjacent analytics products. Vendor-authored best lists are useful product references but are not neutral rankings; review directories such as G2’s category page measure user sentiment and category criteria rather than determining which tool fits your workflow, budget, or platform mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free social media management tool for a business?

Use the native tool for the networks you actually use. Meta Business Suite is the best free starting point for Facebook and Instagram, TikTok Business Suite suits TikTok-first businesses, LinkedIn Page admin is sufficient for many B2B teams, and YouTube Studio is the right choice for YouTube-led video operations. These tools provide first-party publishing and insights but do not create one cross-network calendar, inbox, or reporting system.

Is Buffer or Metricool better for a small business?

Choose Buffer when simple scheduling and transparent per-channel pricing are the priority. Choose Metricool when you need competitor tracking, Google Business Profile, advertising analytics, longer history, custom reporting, or multiple brands. Buffer is easier to start with; Metricool generally offers a broader analytics and reporting value proposition.

Can social media management tools automatically publish Instagram Reels and Stories?

Sometimes. Instagram professional accounts are generally required, and ordinary supported posts may auto-publish. Music, stickers, polls, quizzes, Story links, effects, product tags, collaboration features, unsupported media, and other native elements can require notification publishing, where a person finishes the post inside Instagram. Test the exact content formats your business uses before subscribing.

Do I need Sprout Social or Hootsuite for a small business?

Usually not. Buffer, Metricool, Later, Loomly, SocialPilot, or native platform tools are more appropriate when the job is mainly scheduling and basic reporting. Sprout Social or Hootsuite becomes easier to justify when the business needs multiple users, approvals, social customer care, listening, governance, enterprise security, CRM or help-desk integrations, or detailed executive reporting.

Why do third-party analytics not match native social-network analytics?

Networks expose different metrics through their APIs, revise definitions, update data at different times, separate paid and organic activity differently, and may restrict historical or Story data. Use native analytics for platform-specific truth and the management platform for cross-network trends, workflow reporting, campaign tags, and consistent exports.

The Bottom Line

Choose Sprout Social when social is a mature marketing, customer-care, and reputation function. Choose Hootsuite when enterprise-scale operations, broad monitoring, and governance matter most. Choose Buffer for a simple, affordable multi-channel workflow, or Metricool when analytics and multiple brands are more important. Choose SocialPilot for predictable agency pricing, Later for visual and creator workflows, and Agorapulse for inbox-led community management. If you operate on only one or two networks, use the native free tools until cross-network coordination or team governance becomes a real problem.
