The best settings are the ones that let your chosen model complete your actual task without exhausting available VRAM: choose a model and quantization that fit, use only as much context as you need, and adjust GPU offload if the model will not fit entirely on the GPU. There is no universal setting that works for every GPU, model, runtime, and workload. Model weights are only part of memory use, so leave room for context and runtime allocations, then verify where the model actually loaded.
What settings matter most when VRAM is limited?
Start with four choices: model size, quantization, context length, and GPU offload. They interact. A smaller or more aggressively quantized model can use less memory, a shorter context reduces memory demand, and partial GPU offload can make a model load when the GPU cannot hold it all. Each choice has a trade-off: quantization can affect answer quality, reducing context can limit how much material the model can consider at once, and CPU placement may change performance in ways that depend on the setup.
There is no single context length, quantization, or GPU share that can be recommended for every machine. The useful target is not maximum model size or maximum context; it is a configuration that fits the task, leaves enough memory for the runtime and other GPU use, and produces acceptable results.

- Context: a longer context can help with long documents or tool-heavy work, but increases memory demand.
- Offload: GPU offload determines how much of the model is placed on the GPU rather than elsewhere. LM Studio exposes a control for adjusting it.
- Other allocations: the VRAM shown for a graphics card is not necessarily all available to the model. Other applications and desktop graphics can already be using some of it.
NVIDIA’s Run Local LLMs guide groups its model recommendations into 8–16 GB, 16–24 GB, and 24–48 GB VRAM bands. These are recommendations in that guide, not a guarantee that every model in a band will fit: quantization, context, runtime, and the memory actually available on a system all matter.

How do I find a configuration that fits?
Use a short tuning loop: check available memory, choose a model and quantization, set an initial context window, estimate or load the configuration, inspect placement, and change one setting at a time. That makes it easier to identify whether the limiting factor is the model, context, GPU offload, or other GPU use.
- Check available VRAM, not just the card’s advertised capacity. Close or account for other GPU workloads, and remember that desktop graphics can also occupy memory. Plan to leave room for runtime allocations rather than treating the model’s weight size as the complete requirement.
- Choose a model suited to both the task and the machine. A larger model is not automatically the right choice if it forces an unsuitable configuration. NVIDIA’s VRAM bands can help frame a starting point, but are not a compatibility guarantee for a particular model, context length, or runtime.
- Start with a moderate quantization and test the output. Lower-precision weights use less memory. NVIDIA names NVFP4 and Q4_K_M as balance examples in its own guidance; they are examples, not universal best choices. If answers are not good enough for your task, compare a less aggressive quantization if memory permits.
- Set context to the task’s actual needs. Start with enough room for the prompt and conversation history. Increase it for work that genuinely needs more material in view, such as a long document, only if memory allows. Do not assume a large context is free or useful for every prompt.
- Estimate before loading when your runtime supports it. LM Studio provides an estimate-only option for its load command. Include the intended context length and GPU setting when estimating, so the estimate reflects the configuration you plan to use.
- Load, inspect placement, and adjust one variable at a time. If memory use is too high or the model does not load, try a smaller model, a more memory-efficient quantization, a shorter context, lower GPU offload, or closing other GPU workloads. Check the resulting placement and context after changes.
How should I choose a quantization?
Choose the least aggressive quantization that still fits alongside the context and runtime needs of your task. More aggressive quantization can reduce weight memory, but it can also reduce response quality; there is no quantization that is best for every model and workload.
Quantization changes the precision used for model weights. That can make a model practical on a GPU with less VRAM, but memory savings are not the only criterion. A configuration that fits but gives unsuitable answers is not a good fit for the task. If output quality matters, evaluate the same kinds of prompts you expect to use rather than judging only by whether the model loads.
NVIDIA cites NVFP4 and Q4_K_M as examples of balanced options in its guide. Treat those as starting points from that guidance, not a guarantee of equal quality, equivalent memory use, or universal suitability across models and runtimes. The available evidence does not establish a single quantization ranking or a quality score for all tasks.
How much context can I use with my GPU?
Use the shortest context window that covers the prompt and the material the task needs. Increase it only when a longer document, conversation, or tool workflow requires it and your available memory can accommodate the increase.

Context is part of the memory budget, not just a setting for how much text the model can consider. Ollama’s documentation notes that larger context raises memory requirements and that parallel requests also increase memory use in proportion to configured context and parallelism. A context setting that works for one request may therefore be too demanding when an Ollama server handles more parallel requests.
LM Studio exposes a --context-length option on lms load. For an Ollama server, its context-length documentation describes OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH and other runtime or request controls. The linked Ollama page is on the project’s mutable main branch; exact behavior can vary by installed version, so check the documentation that applies to your runtime rather than assuming a setting is identical across releases.

There is no fixed context length in the available guidance that can be prescribed for every GPU. The practical limit depends on the chosen model, quantization, other memory use, and runtime configuration. If a model begins failing or consuming too much memory after you increase context, restore a smaller window and reassess whether the task actually needs the additional text.
How do I adjust GPU offload in LM Studio?
LM Studio’s lms load command supports an estimate-only mode and a --gpu control. The GPU control accepts a fraction from 0 to 1, or the values off and max, allowing you to estimate and then adjust how much of the model is offloaded.
For example, use the documented estimate-only form with the model key you intend to load:

The estimate helps answer whether the chosen model and settings appear loadable before inference. It does not replace checking what the runtime actually loaded on your machine.
How can I tell whether the model is using the GPU?
Inspect the runtime’s reported processor placement after loading. Ollama documents ollama ps as a way to see processor placement and context, which lets you check whether the model is on the GPU, CPU, or split across them.
A model that spills to CPU has not necessarily failed to load, but the effect on performance depends on the hardware and configuration. There is no measured speed penalty established here for a specific setup, so do not assume a particular slowdown from placement alone. If memory use is too high, reduce context, use a smaller or more quantized model, lower GPU offload, or close other GPU workloads; then run ollama ps again to check the new placement and context.
For the exact runtime controls and placement guidance, see the Ollama project’s context-length documentation. Since that page tracks the mutable main branch, the behavior described may differ from an older installed version.

Which local runtime should I use?
Choose based on how much configuration control and inspection you need. NVIDIA describes LM Studio and Ollama as accessible options for trying or connecting local models, and llama.cpp as a more configurable backend for control over speed, memory use, and hardware.
| Need | Option or control | What it helps with |
|---|---|---|
| Preview whether a model and settings appear loadable | LM Studio lms load --estimate-only |
Estimate resource needs before starting inference. |
| Set context and GPU offload in a load command | LM Studio --context-length and --gpu |
Adjust the context window and GPU share. |
| Set context for an Ollama server | OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH or documented request/runtime controls |
Configure context while accounting for the higher memory demand of larger values. |
| Check processor placement and context | Ollama ollama ps |
Inspect where the model is loaded and the context allocated. |
| Prioritize configuration control | llama.cpp | NVIDIA describes it as the more configurable choice for control over speed, memory use, and hardware. |
| Prefer an accessible desktop or app workflow | LM Studio or Ollama | NVIDIA describes these as approachable options for trying or connecting local models. |
Runtime choice does not establish a universal speed or quality ranking. Exact results depend on hardware, runtime version, model, and settings. To compare two options fairly, use the same hardware, model, prompt, and runtime version where possible, and assess memory fit, output quality for the task, CPU/GPU placement, and configuration effort. No benchmark is available here to rank their speed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I change if my model does not fit in VRAM?
Change the least costly setting for your task first, then verify the outcome. If the model is failing only after you enlarge context, reduce context; if the model itself is too large for the available budget, consider a smaller model or a more memory-efficient quantization.
- Check for competing GPU use. Other applications or desktop graphics may be consuming VRAM that the model needs.
- Reduce context to what the task requires. A shorter window lowers memory demand, though it may not suit work that genuinely needs more text in view.
- Choose a smaller model or more aggressive quantization. These can lower weight memory, but a more aggressive quantization can affect answer quality.
- Reduce GPU offload. In LM Studio, adjust the
--gpuvalue or useofformaxas appropriate to the intended placement; check the current command documentation for syntax. - Estimate and inspect again. Use LM Studio’s estimate-only load option before loading where useful, and use
ollama pswith Ollama to inspect placement and context.
Do not change every setting at once if you need to diagnose the constraint. Change one variable, repeat the estimate or load, and inspect placement. That gives you a more useful signal about whether the issue came from context, weight memory, GPU offload, or other workloads.
How should I compare two settings or models?
Compare them against the same job, not by a single label or an assumption that the largest configuration is best. A useful comparison asks whether each option fits at the context length you need, whether its output is good enough for the task, how much is on the GPU versus CPU, and how much configuration effort it takes.

| Comparison question | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Does it fit at the intended context length? | A model that loads only with a context too short for your work may not meet the need. | Model, quantization, context, and whether it loaded as expected. |
| Is the output quality acceptable? | Lower memory use can come with a quality trade-off. | How it handles representative prompts for your task. |
| Where is the model placed? | GPU/CPU placement is a useful operational distinction, but not a standalone speed score. | The processor placement reported by the runtime. |
| How much configuration does it require? | Greater control can help tuning but may take more effort to manage. | Whether estimates, context controls, and placement checks are available in the workflow you chose. |
Do not declare one runtime or setting faster or better without measurements on the same hardware, model, prompt, and runtime version. A comparison across different conditions cannot isolate the effect of the setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much VRAM should I leave free for a local LLM?
There is no fixed reserve amount established for every machine. Make sure your estimate and test reflect memory already used by desktop graphics or other workloads, and confirm the actual configuration after loading rather than treating model weight size as the full VRAM requirement.
Can I compare two models just by their quantization labels?
No universal quality or memory equivalence between labels is established here. Compare the actual model configurations on representative prompts for your task, and judge both memory fit and output quality.
Why does an estimate differ from what happens after loading?
An estimate is a preview of whether a selected model and settings appear loadable, not a guarantee of actual placement or memory use. Other GPU activity and runtime behavior can affect the result, so inspect the loaded configuration and adjust it if needed.
