Listmonk is the best starting point for a fast, lightweight self-hosted newsletter operation; Mautic is the stronger choice when behavioral automation is the priority. phpList remains a practical fit for mature, long-lived lists, while Sendy suits AWS users who accept a proprietary application and an Amazon SES dependency. MailWizz, SendPortal, Dada Mail and NuevoMailer fill agency, Laravel, shared-hosting and small-business niches respectively.

Every self-hosted option trades a hosted provider’s convenience for control. You must provision the server, apply security updates, configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC, process bounces, maintain suppressions, monitor uptime and protect your sending reputation. The right choice therefore depends as much on your team’s operational capacity as on the feature list.

What does self-hosted email marketing software actually include?

Self-hosted email marketing software is an application you install on infrastructure you control, rather than a service where the vendor runs the application and delivery stack for you. You own the database, subscriber records, campaign configuration and upgrade schedule, but you also own the operational work.

Most products in this category are list managers or campaign senders. A smaller group adds visual automation, lead scoring and behavior-based journeys. Some are thin wrappers around an external relay such as Amazon Simple Email Service (SES), so self-hosting the interface does not mean you are delivering mail directly from your own server.

What you still have to operate

  • Linux or shared-hosting installation, database and storage.
  • Security patches, backups, access controls and secret management.
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for the sending domain.
  • SMTP or API relay configuration, queue monitoring and retry behavior.
  • Bounce processing, suppression lists, unsubscribe handling and complaint monitoring.
  • Uptime, IP or domain reputation and incident recovery.

Geekflare summarized the trade-off in its August 17, 2026 update: “self-hosting means you’re the one responsible for installation, security patches, uptime, and setup.” That responsibility does not disappear when the software is free.

Which of the eight products should you choose?

Use the product’s operating model as the first filter. A newsletter manager is simpler to run than a full automation suite, and a paid wrapper can be economical only when its relay and licensing assumptions fit your volume.

The eight-product frame used by Geekflare contains Sendy, MailWizz, phpList, Listmonk, Mautic, SendPortal, Dada Mail and NuevoMailer. Keila is included here as an additional current open-source alternative because its AGPL workflow and smaller footprint address a different need from the older list managers.

Is Listmonk the best choice for a lightweight newsletter server?

Choose Listmonk when you need high-throughput one-way newsletters, a small dependency set and direct control over the deployment. Its official documentation describes it as “a self-hosted, high performance one-way mailing list and newsletter manager.”

Why teams choose it

  • It is a standalone binary with PostgreSQL as its only dependency.
  • It is free and licensed under AGPLv3.
  • Binary and Docker installation paths make it practical for a VPS or container workflow.
  • The project lists version 7.0.0-beta.1 as released on October 20, 2026.

Where it stops

Listmonk is intentionally narrower than an automation suite. If your requirement is a branching journey driven by page visits, form events or lead scores, Mautic is a more natural fit. Listmonk is strongest when the editorial workflow is “maintain lists, prepare a campaign, send it, and process the resulting delivery events.”

When is Mautic worth the extra operational complexity?

Mautic is the choice when automation graphs and behavioral journeys matter more than a minimal server footprint. The reviewed comparisons position it as the deepest automation option among the open-source choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Mautic for

  • Multi-step journeys that react to subscriber behavior.
  • Campaign logic that needs more than scheduled broadcasts.
  • Teams prepared to maintain a larger application stack and its background jobs.

Plan for the workload

Automation creates more moving parts: event capture, scheduled processing, queue reliability, database growth and testing of every branch. Budget time for staging, backup verification and monitoring rather than treating Mautic as a drop-in newsletter binary.

Is Keila a credible modern alternative?

Keila deserves consideration when you want a modern AGPL newsletter product without adopting the larger footprint associated with a full automation suite. Comparisons describe it as EU-origin, with moderate automation and a relatively small operational footprint.

It is a sensible shortlist candidate for teams that find a basic list manager too limited but do not need Mautic’s depth. Confirm current release activity, integrations and documentation against the project’s own materials before committing to a production migration.

What are phpList’s strengths for established lists?

phpList is best aligned with organizations that value maturity and continuity over a modern automation canvas. It is presented as a long-lived open-source list manager suitable for nonprofit and legacy environments.

Choose it when

  • Your subscribers and sending history already live in a conventional list-management workflow.
  • Editors need reliable announcements rather than complex behavioral orchestration.
  • Migration risk from an older installation is more important than adopting the newest interface.

Before a new deployment, verify the current release, supported runtime and migration documentation. A mature product can still require careful planning when server runtimes and mail-transfer requirements change.

Does Sendy make sense if you already use Amazon SES?

Sendy is a proprietary, one-time-license application commonly used as a thin Amazon SES wrapper. It can reduce application licensing cost for an AWS-centered operation, but SES remains a required external dependency and you still manage the server.

What the wrapper changes

The application gives you a campaign and list interface while SES handles the underlying relay. You still need to configure authentication, monitor bounces and complaints, maintain suppressions and work within SES account and regional rules.

Who should avoid it

Do not choose Sendy solely because the license is paid once. If you need vendor-managed uptime, hands-off deliverability or deep behavioral automation, a self-hosted SES wrapper does not solve those requirements.

Is MailWizz suitable for agencies?

MailWizz is positioned as a commercial self-hosted platform for agencies and larger campaign operations. Its appeal is a more packaged campaign environment than a minimal newsletter binary, while retaining control of the installation.

Commercial terms and current license limits should be checked on the vendor’s site before purchase. For an agency, evaluate account separation, client permissions, reporting, queue capacity and the number of sending identities you must operate; those practical limits determine whether the platform scales for your workflow.

What should you know before deploying SendPortal?

SendPortal is described as a free, open-source Laravel-based sender with a modern interface. It can fit teams that already operate Laravel applications and prefer a familiar framework.

Framework familiarity does not guarantee current project health. Verify maintenance activity, supported PHP and Laravel versions, upgrade instructions and the status of its queue and bounce components before ranking it above a more established option.

When is Dada Mail the practical answer?

Dada Mail targets straightforward announcement-list use and, according to comparison coverage, can run on ordinary shared hosting. That makes it relevant when a full VPS would be disproportionate to a small list and simple editorial process.

Shared hosting reduces infrastructure work but also limits queue control, scheduled jobs, logs and reputation isolation. Confirm that your host permits the required sending method and that you can set SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the domain before installation.

Who should consider NuevoMailer?

NuevoMailer is described as a small-business-oriented proprietary application with a one-time license. It may appeal to an owner who wants a packaged interface without subscribing to a hosted platform.

Because pricing and support can change, verify the current license scope, update policy, PHP or server requirements and vendor response expectations. A one-time purchase is not the same as perpetual security maintenance.

How do the eight products differ in automation, portability and maintenance?

The main decision is not a single feature checkbox; it is how much of the marketing system you want the application to represent.

List managers and newsletter senders

Listmonk, phpList and Dada Mail concentrate on lists, templates, scheduling and broadcasts. They are easier to reason about and migrate when your data model is mostly subscribers, segments and campaign history.

Automation platforms

Mautic adds the deepest behavior-driven workflow. Keila occupies a middle position with moderate automation and a modern AGPL approach. These systems demand more careful job scheduling, testing and database maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delivery wrappers and packaged commercial tools

Sendy delegates delivery to SES. MailWizz and NuevoMailer provide commercial self-hosted packages, so license terms and vendor support become part of portability planning. SendPortal’s Laravel foundation can be attractive to a framework-oriented team, but its current maintenance should be checked.

Maintenance is a buying criterion

Mailtrain illustrates the risk of choosing by feature screenshots alone. The reviewed 2026 comparison reports its last release in June 2021 and last commit in December 2022, recommending it mainly for existing installations. Re-check release pages immediately before adopting any project because maintenance status changes.

What does self-hosted email marketing cost?

The software license is only one line in the budget. A dated 2026 market comparison estimates hosting at roughly $5–$20 per month and Amazon SES at about $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Those are market estimates, not guaranteed quotes; region, traffic, account status, storage, backups and relay policies can change the total.

Cost item Published figure Qualification
Small VPS hosting About $5–$20 per month 2026 comparison estimate; provider, region and capacity vary
Amazon SES sending About $0.10 per 1,000 emails 2026 comparison estimate; account, region and message volume affect billing
Hosted platform for 50,000 subscribers About $150–$300 per month Geekflare 2026 estimate for a typical hosted platform

Self-hosting can therefore be materially cheaper at scale, especially with free software and an efficient relay. It can also become more expensive when you add administrator time, managed backups, monitoring, a higher-capacity VPS, paid support, development work and the cost of recovering from a deliverability incident.

How do you deploy a self-hosted email platform safely?

Use this sequence regardless of which application you select. Product-specific installation commands belong in the project’s current documentation; the operational order is more stable than any one command.

  1. Define the sending job. Decide whether you need one-way newsletters, recurring announcements, transactional messages or behavior-based journeys. This determines whether a list manager or automation suite is appropriate.
  2. Choose the relay. Select an SMTP or API provider, confirm its acceptable-use rules and decide how bounce and complaint events will reach the application.
  3. Prepare the host. Create a least-privilege service account, firewall the server, enable automatic security updates where appropriate, configure encrypted administration and schedule tested backups.
  4. Install the application and database. Follow the current release documentation. For Listmonk, that means the standalone binary or Docker path plus PostgreSQL; other products may require PHP, Laravel or additional workers.
  5. Authenticate the domain. Publish SPF for the relay, generate DKIM keys, add a DMARC policy and verify alignment with the visible From domain. Keep DNS changes documented so they can be restored.
  6. Configure queue and bounce processing. Set retry intervals, hard-bounce handling, unsubscribe behavior and suppression rules before importing a large list.
  7. Import and clean subscribers. Move only permissioned contacts, preserve consent metadata and remove invalid or previously suppressed addresses.
  8. Run a staged send. Test rendering, links, unsubscribe flow, headers and bounce events with a small internal segment before increasing volume.
  9. Monitor after launch. Watch queue depth, delivery responses, complaints, hard bounces, CPU, memory, database growth and disk space. Keep an incident procedure for pausing campaigns.

How do you protect deliverability when you run the server?

Authentication records are necessary but not sufficient. Reputation is shaped by permission quality, complaint rates, bounce hygiene, sending consistency and the behavior of the relay or IP that actually delivers the message.

  • Use confirmed opt-in where the audience and jurisdiction justify it.
  • Honor unsubscribes immediately and synchronize suppressions across every campaign.
  • Do not repeatedly send to hard-bounced addresses.
  • Separate marketing mail from password resets or other critical transactional messages when your relay supports it.
  • Start with a controlled volume and increase gradually instead of surprising a new domain or relay account.
  • Keep a visible postal identity and a working reply path so recipients can identify the sender.

A self-hosted application can queue a message successfully while the relay rejects it, defers it or places it in spam. Monitor both layers.

What should you check before committing to a project?

Perform a short operational review rather than relying on screenshots or a feature checklist.

  • Release activity: identify the latest stable release, supported runtimes and the cadence of security fixes.
  • Upgrade path: confirm database migrations, rollback options and whether configuration survives upgrades.
  • Data export: test export of subscribers, consent fields, templates, campaign history and suppression data.
  • Integration surface: list the APIs, webhooks, forms, analytics and relay connectors your workflow actually needs.
  • Documentation and community: look for complete installation, backup, queue and troubleshooting guidance.
  • Operational fit: estimate who will patch the host, investigate bounces and respond when a campaign must be stopped.

Which choice is best for each common scenario?

  • Fast, technical newsletter deployment: Listmonk.
  • Complex behavioral automation: Mautic.
  • Modern AGPL workflow with moderate automation: Keila.
  • Long-running nonprofit or legacy lists: phpList.
  • AWS and SES-centered sending: Sendy.
  • Agency-oriented commercial operation: MailWizz.
  • Laravel-based team: SendPortal, after verifying maintenance.
  • Simple announcement list on shared hosting: Dada Mail.
  • Packaged small-business application: NuevoMailer, after verifying current support and licensing.

Make the final decision only after a pilot that exercises import, unsubscribe, bounce, suppression, backup restore and a staged send. Those tests reveal more than a feature list whether the software fits your team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use self-hosted software without running my own mail server?

Yes. Applications such as Sendy are commonly paired with an external relay, and most other platforms can be configured for SMTP or an email API. You still operate the application, event processing and compliance controls even when another provider performs delivery.

How can I migrate away from a self-hosted email platform later?

Export subscribers together with consent timestamps, custom fields, unsubscribe status and suppression history, not just email addresses. Run a restore test and preserve campaign templates separately so a future migration does not reactivate people who previously opted out.

Should marketing and transactional messages share one sending identity?

Keeping them logically separate makes incidents easier to contain and reporting easier to interpret. If a campaign triggers complaints, you do not want password resets or account notices competing with the same reputation and suppression stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the first maintenance task after a successful launch?

Schedule a recurring review of application releases, operating-system patches, backups, queue health and DNS authentication. A working first campaign does not prove that the installation can recover from a failed upgrade or a full disk.
