The best alternative depends on who needs access. If a service is only for you or a trusted group, start with private network access rather than making it public. If anyone on the internet—or a third-party webhook provider—must reach it, compare public tunnel and reverse-proxy options by relay ownership, protocol support, TLS and domain handling, access controls, and the work you will operate yourself. The candidates below are a shortlist, not a verified ranking: current project documentation for their requirements and capabilities was not available to establish a fair winner.

What does “self-hosted alternative” mean in this case?

Cloudflare Tunnel is not self-hosted end to end. In Cloudflare’s documented setup, cloudflared runs near your service and makes outbound connections to Cloudflare; the setup does not require an inbound port or a publicly exposed origin IP. Cloudflare routes a public hostname to a local service, while the vendor operates the edge relay. Cloudflare Tunnel documentation describes the connection model, and its setup guide lists the prerequisites.

A self-hosted alternative generally means that you operate at least part of the public-facing path—often a relay or proxy on a public host—instead of relying entirely on a vendor-operated edge. It does not automatically mean every component is under your control: DNS, domain registration, certificate authorities, hosting, or a project’s control plane may still be third-party dependencies. Check the actual deployment architecture before treating “self-hosted” as a privacy or independence guarantee.

Also separate two different jobs. Private remote access is for a defined set of trusted devices or people. Public ingress is for anyone who can reach a public hostname, including external integrations. Choosing the wrong audience model can expose an administrative interface when a private connection would have met the need.

Should I choose private access or public exposure?

Choose private access when only your own devices or a trusted group should connect. Choose public ingress when anonymous users or an external service must initiate a connection. A publicly addressable service can still require authentication, but that is not the same as keeping it on a private network.

Private services: keep the audience small

For a home dashboard, development environment, or personal file service, a mesh VPN or private overlay is often the better category to evaluate. The access decision is then based on joining the private network rather than publishing a hostname for general internet access. Verify how the tool handles device identity, user removal, DNS, and access policies; the available evidence here does not establish a specific private-overlay product as the best choice.

Public services: plan for outside callers

A public website, demo, or webhook endpoint has to be reachable by callers that are not members of your private network. That requires a public ingress path, whether a vendor runs the relay or you operate one. For webhooks, check the sending service’s documented networking and authentication requirements; a private-only route will not work unless the sender can join or otherwise reach that private network.

Which self-hosted candidates should I shortlist?

Comparison pages identify frp, rathole, Pangolin, zrok, inlets, and Boringproxy as candidates. Those mentions are useful for creating a shortlist, but they do not establish current versions, deployment prerequisites, security controls, or a defensible overall ranking. Use the table to decide what to investigate, not as a specification sheet.

Candidate What the available comparisons say What to verify in current official documentation
frp Presented as a broad self-hosted reverse-proxy option with multiple protocols by the ngrok alternatives comparison and H2 Labs comparison. Client/server topology, supported protocols, authentication and access controls, exposed ports, project status, upgrade process, and license.
rathole H2 Labs describes it as a Rust-based self-hosted tunnel and positions it for constrained hardware. That description does not establish comparative performance. Current topology, resource requirements, security configuration, protocol support, release status, and license. Treat efficiency claims as unverified unless supported by comparable benchmarks.
Pangolin The comparison sources describe a self-hosted option with a web-interface or fleet-management positioning. The ngrok comparison mentions HTTP and raw TCP/UDP and lists community/enterprise licensing. Current edition boundaries, supported deployment, protocol details, security model, license terms, and which features require a commercial edition.
zrok Comparison pages surface it as an OpenZiti-based sharing option. Which modes can be self-hosted, what traffic uses public relays, how identities and access are managed, and the current setup and licensing requirements.
inlets The ngrok comparison identifies it as a Kubernetes-oriented self-hosted tunnel option and reports commercial licensing. Current product editions, supported Kubernetes and non-Kubernetes deployments, protocol coverage, security controls, and costs.
Boringproxy H2 Labs describes a server/client tool with a web UI; that is a secondary-source description, not confirmation of current project status. Whether the project is actively maintained, current installation guidance, supported protocols, access controls, and release/license details.

For every candidate, the specific supported protocols, port requirements, current edition limits, and operational prerequisites are not stated in the comparison evidence cited above. Do not infer that a product supports your use case merely because a comparison calls it a tunnel or reverse proxy. Check its official documentation and release notes before choosing it.

How do I compare tunnel and proxy options fairly?

Start with the traffic and audience you need, then compare the architecture that carries it. The same product category label can hide meaningful differences: one setup may depend on a vendor relay, another on a VPS you maintain, and a third may be intended for private sharing rather than public ingress.

  • Audience: Can only approved devices or users connect, or can any internet client reach the hostname? Identify whether authentication happens before traffic reaches the application.
  • Relay ownership: Find out whether a vendor or you operate the public endpoint. If you operate it, establish where it runs and who handles outages and updates.
  • Network prerequisites: Determine whether the origin needs a public IP or inbound firewall rule, whether a relay needs publicly reachable ports, and what outbound traffic the origin must be allowed to make. If you are behind carrier-grade NAT, verify that the chosen topology works without inbound reachability at the origin.
  • Protocols: Confirm support for the exact traffic you need—such as HTTP(S), SSH, arbitrary TCP, or UDP—in the current edition and deployment mode. “Tunnel” alone does not promise support for every protocol.
  • Hostname and TLS: Check whether you can use a custom domain or only a provider hostname, where TLS terminates, how certificates are issued and renewed, and whether traffic is encrypted between each hop.
  • Access policy: Look for identity-based rules, authentication before the app, least-privilege routing, and a workable way to revoke access. Do not assume a public URL is protected just because the origin is not directly exposed.
  • Operations: Account for software updates, monitoring, configuration backups, relay availability, recovery after a host failure, and incident response. A self-run relay makes these your responsibility.
  • Cost and dependency: Include the public host, domain, bandwidth or egress charges, and any paid software edition, then identify dependencies on a vendor’s control plane or relay. No candidate-by-candidate price comparison is established by the cited sources.

What does Cloudflare Tunnel provide as the baseline?

Cloudflare’s documentation describes an outbound-only connection from infrastructure to Cloudflare, routing a hostname to a local origin without requiring an inbound origin port or public origin IP in the documented setup. The setup guide lists a Cloudflare account, a domain on Cloudflare, and an internet-connected server as prerequisites for publishing an application. Its examples include local HTTP and HTTPS service URLs.

The same guide notes that non-HTTP services such as SSH, TCP, and RDP require a client-side cloudflared setup. That distinction matters: publishing a web app to a browser and providing access to a TCP service are not necessarily the same configuration. Cloudflare’s setup guide was last updated September 30, 2026; check the live documentation for current product behavior.

Can Tailscale Funnel replace a self-hosted public relay?

Tailscale Funnel is a public-ingress option, but it is not a self-hosted relay: its documentation says public requests pass through Tailscale relay servers to a resource on a device in a tailnet. Tailscale distinguishes Funnel, which makes a resource public, from Serve, which shares a resource within the tailnet.

The Funnel documentation specifies tailnet-domain names, listener ports 443, 8443, and 10000, and TLS. It describes an encrypted proxy with TLS termination at the destination device and says bandwidth limits are not configurable. The page also lists requirements involving MagicDNS, HTTPS certificates, and an applicable node attribute. These are details of Tailscale’s own documented option, not universal requirements for self-hosted candidates. Confirm the current feature status and plan availability in the Tailscale Funnel documentation; availability and beta status can change.

How do I choose and deploy an option without exposing more than intended?

Use this sequence before moving a service. It avoids choosing a tool based only on its name or a broad feature claim.

  1. Write down who must connect. List the people, devices, and external services that need access. If the list contains only trusted devices, evaluate private access first.
  2. Specify the traffic. Record whether the service needs browser-based HTTP(S), SSH, another TCP service, UDP, or more than one protocol. Include whether the caller is interactive or an automated third party.
  3. Choose relay ownership. Decide whether you want a vendor-operated edge or are prepared to run the public relay yourself. For a self-run relay, identify the public host, network exposure, firewall rules, and failure-recovery plan.
  4. Check the current official docs. For each shortlisted project, verify installation and topology, supported protocols, port and firewall requirements, authentication, TLS behavior, release status, and licensing. Do not rely on a comparison page for details it does not document.
  5. Design access before publishing. Put identity checks or application authentication in the intended path, limit routes to the necessary service, and avoid exposing unrelated administration ports. Confirm which component terminates TLS and how credentials or certificates are maintained.
  6. Test from the right network. Test private access from a device that should be authorized, and test public access from outside your LAN. Confirm that unauthorized requests are rejected and that the required protocol—not just the landing page—works.
  7. Prepare to operate it. Decide how you will monitor availability, apply security updates, back up configuration, rotate credentials, and restore service if the relay or origin fails.

What are the common mistakes when replacing Cloudflare Tunnel?

  • Making a private tool public for convenience. A public hostname changes the audience. If trusted-device access is sufficient, avoid public ingress unless a concrete requirement calls for it.
  • Assuming a self-hosted tunnel needs no public infrastructure. A public service still needs a reachable ingress path. In many self-operated designs, that means a publicly reachable relay or host even when the origin itself is behind NAT.
  • Confusing a working web page with protocol support. A browser test does not prove that SSH, arbitrary TCP, UDP, or a webhook flow works. Validate the exact protocol and client behavior.
  • Leaving authentication to the origin by accident. Determine where access checks occur and whether the application is reachable through any alternate route that bypasses them.
  • Ignoring maintenance and recovery. Running the relay shifts responsibility for updates, configuration, monitoring, and availability to you. Document a recovery path before relying on it.
  • Choosing from stale comparison claims. Features, project maintenance, licenses, and edition boundaries change. Verify them against official project documentation and release information before deployment.

Which option is best for my setup?

There is no well-supported universal winner among the named self-hosted candidates based on the available verified details. The practical choice is the one whose current official documentation matches your audience, protocol, network constraints, domain and TLS needs, access policy, and tolerance for operating a relay.

  • Only your devices or trusted users need access: investigate a private mesh or overlay approach before creating a public endpoint.
  • You need public access but do not want to operate the edge: compare vendor-operated tunnel services, including the baseline behavior documented by Cloudflare and Tailscale Funnel, and account for their domain, relay, and feature constraints.
  • You need public access and want to operate the relay: shortlist frp, rathole, Pangolin, zrok, inlets, or Boringproxy, then eliminate any candidate whose official docs do not confirm your required protocols, security model, deployment topology, and license.

Whichever route you choose, treat publication as a security boundary change, not just a DNS or proxy configuration. The relay is only one part of the decision; the intended audience and the controls around the application matter just as much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a webhook service call an endpoint that is only available on my private network?

Usually not unless the webhook sender can join that private network or has another supported route into it. Check the sender’s networking documentation before choosing a private-only design; a public callback endpoint may be required.

Does self-hosting a relay eliminate third-party dependencies?

No. You may still depend on a VPS provider, DNS registrar, certificate authority, or an external control plane. Map each dependency and decide which failures or policy changes you can tolerate.

Can I use one tunnel for HTTP, SSH, TCP, and UDP?

Do not assume so. Protocol support can differ by product, edition, and deployment mode, so confirm each required protocol in the current official documentation and test it with the actual client.

What should I do if I cannot find current official documentation for a candidate?

Treat that uncertainty as a selection risk rather than filling gaps with comparison-page claims. Confirm maintenance and security guidance from the project’s own channels; if you cannot, prefer a better-documented option for an internet-facing service.
