Short answer: Choose NASA Spot the Station for official International Space Station (ISS) alerts and guided viewing, Heavens-Above for the most complete pass predictions and satellite detail, or ISS Detector if notifications for the ISS and a wider range of objects are your priority. Every prediction depends on your observing location and current orbital data, and no app can guarantee a visible pass when clouds, daylight or buildings intervene.
The three apps solve slightly different problems. NASA’s app is intentionally ISS-focused and easy to follow. Heavens-Above is the deeper tool for observers who want sky charts, orbital information and many satellites. ISS Detector puts alerts first and combines several data services, although the detailed third-party description available for it is older than the NASA and Heavens-Above documentation. Check the current listing for your phone before installing.
Best satellite tracking apps at a glance
| App | Primary strength | Objects covered | Prediction and guidance detail | Location and connectivity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NASA Spot the Station | Official ISS alerts and guided sightings | International Space Station | Pass date and time, duration, visibility information, maximum height, appearance and disappearance directions, augmented-reality view and compass | Uses device GPS for its augmented-reality feature; push alerts for a preferred location | Beginners whose main goal is seeing the ISS |
| Heavens-Above | Detailed predictions and live sky context | ISS, most visible satellites, radio satellites and additional orbital objects listed by the service | Live sky chart, precise pass tables, magnitude limits, countdowns, orbital details, animated sky and ground tracks | Uses phone geolocation; calculations run locally, with a data connection needed only every few days; the next 24 hours can be stored locally | General stargazers and advanced satellite observers |
| ISS Detector | Notification-oriented forecasting | ISS and other objects | Alerts and forecasts assembled from several external data services; exact current feature set should be checked in the app store | Location and weather inputs are used for forecasts; current behavior may differ from the older documentation | People who want reminders rather than detailed orbital analysis |
“Live” does not mean that an app is continuously measuring a satellite with your phone. It means the app presents a current position or a computed pass using your location and updated orbital information. A pass prediction is a forecast of when an object should cross your sky; visibility still depends on the Sun, clouds, haze, terrain and obstructions.
How to choose the right app
Choose NASA Spot the Station for a simple, official ISS experience
NASA Spot the Station is the clearest choice when the International Space Station is the only target that matters. NASA describes it as an official app for tracking ISS viewings and receiving notifications as the station passes over your location. The app was released for iOS and Android in 2023. In a NASA update from December 2024, the service had more than 770,000 users in 227 countries and territories.

Its focus keeps the interface approachable: set a location, allow notifications, open an upcoming pass and follow the directions. The app can show the pass duration, maximum elevation and the compass directions in which the station will appear and disappear. An augmented-reality interface, built-in compass and real-time photo or video sharing are also documented by NASA.
Choose Heavens-Above for many satellites and deeper predictions
Heavens-Above is the strongest all-purpose option when “satellite tracking” means more than the ISS. Its official app listing documents a live sky chart, precise predictions for the ISS and most visible satellites, radio-satellite passes, orbital details, and animated sky and ground tracks. You can set a magnitude limit so the list is not overwhelmed by objects too faint for your observing conditions, and use a countdown to the next pass.
Heavens-Above also suits travel or locations with unreliable connectivity. The service says its calculations run locally and require a data connection only every few days. Its mobile documentation says the next 24 hours of predictions can be stored on the phone. That is different from an app that must contact a server every time you open a pass list, although you still need occasional connectivity to refresh the underlying information.
Choose ISS Detector when alerts are your priority
ISS Detector is designed around forecasts and notifications for the ISS and other objects. A European data-portal use-case document describes it as combining NASA, Heavens-Above, the Minor Planet Center and yr.no weather data. That combination can make an alert more useful than a time-only reminder because weather information and object data are considered together.
The cited description is older than the NASA and Heavens-Above material, so treat it as a guide to the app’s approach rather than a guarantee of every current menu or supported object. Confirm the present operating-system support, subscription or purchase options, object list and notification controls in the current app-store listing.

NASA Spot the Station: setup and everyday use
Set up a location and alerts
- Install the official Spot the Station app from the iOS or Android store. Verify that the publisher is NASA.
- Allow location access if you want the app to use your phone’s position for local sightings and augmented reality. If you deny GPS, select or enter the observing location offered by the app instead.
- Enable notifications. Select the location for which you want upcoming-pass alerts; a pass calculated for a different city may occur at a noticeably different time or elevation.
- Open an alert before the event and read the date, start time, duration, maximum height and appearance/disappearance directions.
- At the appointed time, use the compass or augmented-reality view to place the station in the correct part of the sky. Keep the phone pointed steadily and compare the overlay with the open sky rather than with a roof or tree line.
What the NASA alert tells you
The useful information is more than a notification saying “ISS overhead.” NASA documents location-specific sighting details: when the pass starts, how long it remains visible, its maximum height above the horizon, and the directions from which it appears and disappears. These fields let you decide whether a balcony, garden or nearby hill has enough of the sky exposed.
Notifications are particularly helpful for occasional observers. Instead of checking a calendar every night, you can wait for an alert and then verify the weather and horizon yourself. The app’s photo and video sharing options are convenient if you want to record an observation, but they do not improve the prediction or make a cloudy pass visible.
Strengths and limits
- Strengths: official NASA branding, ISS-specific guidance, push notifications, GPS-based location handling, augmented reality and compass assistance.
- Limits: it is centered on the ISS rather than a broad catalog of satellites; an alert cannot account perfectly for a newly obstructed horizon, local fog or rapidly changing cloud cover.
- Best fit: a first-time observer, a classroom or family group, or anyone who wants the simplest route from an alert to an ISS sighting.
Heavens-Above: detailed pass predictions and sky charts
Configure the observing site
- Open Heavens-Above and grant geolocation access, or choose an observing site manually. Check the map pin, especially if you are outside your home area.
- Set the limiting magnitude to match your conditions. A darker site and clear sky support fainter objects; a bright urban sky may require a brighter limit so the list remains practical.
- Choose the object category, such as ISS, visible satellites or radio satellites, then open the pass table for the desired date.
- Use the countdown to identify the next event. Open the detailed row to inspect the pass path, altitude and direction rather than relying only on the start time.
- Switch to the live sky chart or animated sky/ground track when you need to understand where the object will move relative to the horizon and your location.
Why its local calculations matter
Heavens-Above states that calculations are performed locally on the device. A data connection is needed only every few days, and the mobile documentation says the next 24 hours of data can be saved locally. This arrangement is useful at a campsite, on a flight-free rural trip or anywhere with intermittent service, provided you refresh the data before leaving connectivity.
Local calculation does not mean the data are permanently current. Orbital predictions change as new information becomes available, so connect periodically and refresh before planning a special observation. If the phone has an incorrect location, an old prediction set or an unsuitable magnitude limit, a technically precise calculation can still be unhelpful.
Features for experienced observers
- Live sky chart: shows the current or selected sky view so you can relate a pass to constellations and horizon directions.
- Pass predictions: provides detailed times for the ISS and most visible satellites listed by the service.
- Magnitude controls: filters objects by expected brightness, reducing clutter when you only want realistic naked-eye targets.
- Orbital information: supplies context for an object beyond a simple notification.
- Animated tracks: sky and ground-track animations show movement over your location and across the Earth.
- Radio-satellite information: helps listeners and radio observers find passes that are not primarily visual targets.
ISS Detector: alerts assembled from several data services
What makes it different
ISS Detector’s defining idea is aggregation. The European data-portal use-case document says the app combines NASA and Heavens-Above information with Minor Planet Center data and yr.no weather data to produce forecasts and alerts for the ISS and other objects. In practical terms, the app is aimed at answering “Should I go outside soon?” rather than presenting the largest set of orbital charts.

- Find ISS Detector in your current app store and confirm the publisher and supported operating system.
- Set the observation location and permit the location access needed for local predictions.
- Review which object types generate notifications; do not assume that every satellite category is enabled by default.
- Check how the app obtains weather information and whether alerts can be limited to clear or nearly clear conditions.
- Open a sample pass and compare its time and direction with another established source before relying on it for a planned event.
Because the detailed description available for ISS Detector predates the latest NASA and Heavens-Above documentation, current app-store notes should take precedence for interface names, supported objects and any paid features.
Understanding live positions and pass predictions
Position versus pass
A live-position view answers “Where should the object be now?” A pass prediction answers “When will it be above my horizon, and for how long?” The first is useful when you are already outside with a sky chart open. The second is what you need to schedule an observation. Heavens-Above exposes both concepts through its live chart and pass tables; NASA Spot the Station emphasizes the scheduled ISS pass and guided direction; ISS Detector emphasizes the alert that brings you outside.
Time and duration
Use the start time as the moment to begin looking, not as a guarantee that the object will be immediately obvious. A pass may begin low on the horizon, where trees or buildings hide it, and become easier to see as it climbs. Duration describes the predicted visible interval under the service’s conditions; it is not a promise that your eyes will detect the object for every second.
Maximum height and direction
Maximum height, sometimes shown as an altitude above the horizon, tells you how high the object climbs. A high pass is generally easier to observe than one that skims the horizon, because more of its path is above local obstructions. Appearance and disappearance directions give you the compass bearings for the start and end of the visible path. Use these bearings to choose the side of a building or garden with the widest view.

Brightness and magnitude limits
Heavens-Above lets you configure magnitude limits. The setting controls which objects appear in lists; it does not brighten a satellite. A lower-brightness object may require darker skies, better transparency or optical aid. Urban light pollution, haze and the observer’s own adaptation to darkness can make a listed object difficult to see even when the predicted path is correct.
Charts and animated tracks
A sky chart maps the pass against your local horizon and stars. An animated sky track is useful when you are unsure whether “northwest” means a short glance or a long sweep across the sky. A ground track shows the satellite’s route over Earth, which is a different view: it helps explain the orbital path but does not replace the local sky chart when you are standing outside.
How to plan an ISS observation from your location
- Choose the observing point. Select the place where you will actually stand, not merely the nearest city. A change of location changes the predicted time, path and height.
- Refresh the prediction. Connect to the internet before the event, particularly if you use Heavens-Above’s locally stored data or have not opened the app for several days.
- Pick a high, dark pass when possible. Prefer a pass with a high maximum elevation and a clear route away from the horizon. Avoid assuming that the longest listed duration is automatically the easiest if much of the path is behind buildings.
- Check daylight and weather. Confirm that the sky will be dark enough for the pass and that clouds, rain, mist or smoke are not expected to block it. Apps can supply weather information, but your local view is the final test.
- Arrive early. Be outside several minutes before the predicted start. Let your eyes adjust, identify the appearance direction and open the compass or chart before the station reaches that area.
- Watch for steady motion. The ISS usually appears as a bright point moving smoothly across the sky; do not expect flashing navigation lights or a detailed spacecraft shape with unaided eyes.
- Record responsibly. Use the NASA app’s sharing tools or your phone camera if desired, but keep screen brightness low so it does not ruin your night vision.
Location, connectivity and data freshness
| Question | NASA Spot the Station | Heavens-Above | ISS Detector |
|---|---|---|---|
| How is location handled? | Device GPS supports the augmented-reality experience and local alerts. | Phone geolocation and local calculations; a site can be selected for the observing position. | Location is used for forecasts; exact controls depend on the current app version. |
| Can predictions work without a continuous connection? | Alerts and feature behavior depend on the current app implementation; refresh before an event. | Yes, after data are refreshed; the service says a connection is needed only every few days and the next 24 hours can be stored locally. | Verify current offline behavior in the app listing; the cited description does not establish a specific cache period. |
| What should be refreshed? | Location and upcoming ISS pass information. | Orbital and pass data, especially after several days offline or before a planned event. | Object, weather and alert data according to the current version. |
Location permission is central because a pass is not a single global event. The same satellite can be below the horizon for one observer while visible for another. If you travel, change the selected site rather than assuming that a home-city prediction remains valid.
Troubleshooting missed or confusing passes
The notification arrived, but nothing was visible
- Check cloud, haze, rain, smoke and light pollution at the observing site.
- Confirm that the pass was not during bright daylight or close to local sunrise or sunset when contrast may be poor.
- Verify the compass direction and maximum height; a low pass may have been hidden by trees, buildings or terrain.
- Make sure the app’s location pin is correct and that the prediction was refreshed recently.
The app shows a time that differs from another app
Compare the selected locations, time-zone settings and object identity first. Then refresh both apps. Different data refresh times or visibility criteria can produce small differences, especially when one app is offline. Use the detailed pass fields—start, maximum height and end—rather than comparing a notification headline alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The augmented-reality overlay points the wrong way
- Calibrate the phone’s compass by following the device’s calibration prompt.
- Move away from magnetic cases, speakers, vehicles and large metal structures.
- Hold the phone level and allow the location sensor to settle.
- Use the written appearance direction or a sky chart as a cross-check; the overlay is a guide, not an independent measurement.
Heavens-Above lists too many objects
Lower the magnitude limit to show only brighter, more realistic targets for your sky. Filter by the object category and date, then open the pass details. A long list is not evidence that every item will be visible to the naked eye.

Accuracy, safety and realistic expectations
Orbital pass times are predictions, not guarantees. Updates to orbital information, an inaccurate location, an old offline data set or a blocked horizon can all change what you experience. NASA’s app, Heavens-Above and ISS Detector present useful guidance, but none can remove local weather and observing conditions from the equation.
Never walk into a road, restricted area or unsafe terrain while following a phone overlay. Set up in a legal location with a broad, stable view, reduce screen brightness and keep a flashlight pointed at the ground. If you are observing with children, establish the viewing position before the alert begins so attention stays on the sky rather than on moving around in darkness.
Which app should you install?
Install NASA Spot the Station when an official, beginner-friendly ISS alert is the outcome you want. Install Heavens-Above when you need precise pass tables, live sky context, multiple satellite categories or locally available predictions between data connections. Consider ISS Detector when notification convenience and weather-informed alerts matter most, while confirming its current features because the detailed independent description is older.
Whichever app you choose, set the exact observing location, refresh data before a planned event, read the altitude and direction fields, and check the actual sky. That combination—not the app name alone—is what turns a predicted pass into a successful sighting.
