Stainless steel
Stainless steel is a common choice for insulated designs. Stanley says the steel it uses is 18/8, or grade 304 food-grade stainless steel. Stanley advises hand washing unless the specific product is identified as dishwasher-safe. SIGG also discusses 18/8 steel and cautions that people with chrome or nickel allergies should take that into account.
Glass
KeepCup presents tempered glass as a taste-focused option, and SIGG says glass does not absorb odors or flavors. Glass may be less suitable for rough handling or places where drops are likely. The available manufacturer material does not establish comparative breakage rates, so consider how you will carry and use the cup rather than treating glass as universally fragile or durable.

Tritan copolyester
Eastman describes Tritan as BPA- and BPS-free, shatter-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and resistant to odor or taste carryover. Those are Eastman’s material claims. Eastman also offers Tritan Renew, which it describes as a 50% certified recycled-material option; its recycled content is certified using ISCC mass-balance allocation. Check the specific tumbler’s own material and care information: a material-level claim does not automatically describe every finished product.
How much insulation do you need?
If you drink soon after filling, insulation may matter less than capacity, grip, or ease of cleaning. If you want a drink to stay hot or cold for hours, compare the individual model’s construction and maker-stated retention claim. Will an insulated tumbler fit in a car cup holder?
Capacity alone cannot answer that. Check the tumbler’s base diameter and height, and include the handle when checking width. A wide upper body can still have a narrower base, while a handle may prevent a tumbler from sitting in a holder even when its base fits. Manufacturer claims of cup-holder compatibility refer to the named model; they cannot guarantee a fit in every car. If possible, compare the product’s dimensions with your holder before buying.

Does the lid need to be leak-proof?
Match the lid to how you carry the tumbler. If it will travel in a bag, look for an explicit leak-proof claim and confirm that the lid is fully closed as instructed. “Splash-resistant” describes a different level of protection and should not be treated as leak-proof. For drinking while driving or walking, consider whether the opening is practical to use safely; a straw or sip opening is not a substitute for securing the lid during transport.
How do you clean a tumbler straw and lid?
- Find the care instructions for the exact model. Manufacturer guidance varies: some products call for hand washing, while selected products are described as dishwasher-safe.
- Take removable parts apart when the instructions say to. Clean the lid, straw, and seals as well as the cup body, paying attention to crevices where drink residue can remain.
- Use a straw brush when the model has a straw. Rinse it after cleaning and let components dry as directed before reassembly.
- Check dishwasher guidance for each part. Do not infer that a dishwasher-safe material makes the entire assembled tumbler dishwasher-safe.
- Reassemble and inspect the seal. Make sure removable parts are seated correctly before carrying the tumbler.
Care directions can differ even among products from the same category. For example, Stanley advises hand washing unless a specific product is marked dishwasher-safe; Tritan’s material properties do not replace the finished product’s own care instructions.

Check use restrictions before filling
Restrictions are model-specific. Gatorade warns against using the Crossover with hot or carbonated liquids. Asobu’s cited stainless-steel instructions say not to use its products in a microwave or on a stovetop and caution against carbonated beverages. 24Bottles says its Travel Tumbler is not intended for carbonated water. Do not apply one model’s restrictions to every tumbler; read the instructions for the product you own.
Also distinguish insulated from single-wall bottles. 24Bottles says its Urban Bottle is non-insulated, may condense with cold drinks, and is not recommended for hot liquids because the vessel may become hot to handle.

- For hot or cold drinks over time: Start with an insulated model and compare only its own manufacturer-stated claims. Then check size, lid, and care.
