For most families, DAKboard is the easiest Raspberry Pi dashboard: it is managed in a browser and connects to major calendar, weather, and task services without maintaining a server. Choose Home Screens if you want a free, self-hosted dashboard with chores, meals, profiles, and a visual editor. Choose MagicMirror² if you are comfortable editing configuration files and want the deepest maker-level customization. OpenFrame is another promising open-source family dashboard, but its project maturity and release history need closer verification.

This guide compares setup effort, hosting, calendar and weather support, reminders, privacy, display behavior, hardware, and recurring cost so you can select a system that will remain useful after the novelty of a wall display wears off.

Which Raspberry Pi dashboard is best for a family calendar?

Use DAKboard when low maintenance and broad online-service support matter most. Use Home Screens for a no-subscription, self-hosted family hub with chores and meal planning. MagicMirror² is the better fit for technically confident users who want to assemble their own interface from modules. OpenFrame deserves consideration when you want an open-source family dashboard with Home Assistant and messaging integrations, but it is less documented than the other choices.

What hardware do you need for a Raspberry Pi wall dashboard?

At minimum, plan for a Raspberry Pi, a reliable power supply, storage, an HDMI display, and a way to mount or secure the screen. A wired Ethernet connection is preferable during installation; Wi-Fi is usually adequate once the dashboard is running.

Recommended baseline

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 2GB RAM: DAKOS, the operating system used by DAKboard displays, explicitly supports Pi 4B and recommends the 2GB version or higher. DAKOS also supports Pi 3B, 3B+, 3A+, Pi 5, and Pi Zero 2W.
  • HDMI monitor or wall display: Home Screens specifically targets a Pi 4 or Pi 5 connected to any HDMI screen. Choose a display with a viewing angle and brightness suitable for the room rather than relying only on diagonal size.
  • Quality power and storage: Use the board maker’s recommended USB-C supply for Pi 4 or Pi 5 and a reputable microSD card. An unreliable supply or worn card can look like a software problem.
  • Optional touch capability: A touchscreen is useful for checking chores or advancing a schedule. A passive display is simpler and safer in a hallway because family members cannot accidentally alter settings.

Exact board revisions, power supplies, storage capacities, display prices, and availability change. Verify those details when buying rather than assuming every Pi 4 listing includes the same accessories.

How does DAKboard work, and what does it cost?

DAKboard is a cloud-managed service: you configure screens in a web browser, while a Raspberry Pi, tablet, smart TV, or ordinary browser loads the finished dashboard. That architecture is the lowest-friction option for households that want to change calendars or reminders without logging into the Pi.

DAKboard plan differences

Plan Screen and calendar limits Included capabilities Calendar refresh Price (USD)
Free One predefined screen; up to two calendars Photos, weather, news/RSS, branding 60 minutes $0
Essential Two custom screens; up to five calendars All integrations, custom CSS, templates 30 minutes $6 per month or $5 per month billed annually
Plus Three custom screens; unlimited calendars 500 MB media library, screen loops, scheduling, faster refresh 15 minutes $10 per month or $8 per month billed annually

Prices and limits above were checked October 25, 2026. Annual figures are the effective monthly rate when paid annually, not a separate month-to-month price. The refresh interval is important: a change made in a calendar may not appear immediately, especially on the free plan.

What calendars, weather, and tasks can DAKboard display?

  • Calendars can come from Google Calendar, Apple iCloud Calendar, Microsoft Office 365 Calendar, Facebook Events, or an ICS feed.
  • Task integrations include Todoist, Microsoft To Do, Google Tasks, Trello, and Asana.
  • Weather choices include Weatherbit, Apple Weather, OpenWeatherMap, and Weather Underground, with alerts and air-quality information.
  • Scheduled Text can place a message on screen and optionally play an audio reminder, which is useful for school departures, medication prompts, or trash collection.

How to set up DAKboard on a Pi

  1. Install the supported DAKOS image on a suitable Pi and connect the board to the display, network, and power.
  2. Create or sign in to a DAKboard account from another computer or phone.
  3. Register the display shown by DAKOS, then select a screen layout or create a custom screen on a paid plan.
  4. Add calendars using the provider’s sign-in flow or an ICS URL. Give the dashboard read-only access whenever the provider offers that choice.
  5. Add weather, photos, RSS news, and task integrations. Configure Scheduled Text entries for reminders that should appear at a specific time.
  6. Set screen orientation, brightness, sleep behavior, and refresh preferences on the display device. Test the screen at the wall location before mounting it permanently.

DAKboard markets a five-minute, no-code setup. That is a vendor claim, not an independent timing result; the actual time depends on account permissions, network access, and display preparation.

Is Home Screens the best free self-hosted choice?

Home Screens is the strongest fit when you want a visual editor and family workflows without a subscription. It is free, open source, self-hosted, and advertises 45 modules, including calendars, chores, meals, photos, weather, profiles, scheduling, phone remote control, and plugins.

Home Screens installation path

  1. Prepare a Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5 and an HDMI display. Install the project’s supported image or installation method on a fresh microSD card.
  2. Boot the Pi, connect it to your home network, and open the Home Screens interface from the display or a device on the same network.
  3. Use the drag-and-drop editor to place calendar, weather, chores, meals, and photo modules. Create profiles if different family members need separate views.
  4. Configure schedules so the display changes layout or content by time of day. A daytime family view and a quieter overnight view can use the same screen.
  5. Pair the phone remote-control feature if you want to make quick changes without reaching the wall display.
  6. Back up the configuration and the microSD card after the dashboard is working. Self-hosting means you, rather than a vendor, are responsible for recovery.

What is the privacy trade-off?

Home Screens does not require cloud hosting and states that it has no subscriptions or usage limits, but its FAQ says anonymous telemetry is enabled by default. The reported data includes an install ID, platform and processor, display resolution and orientation, counts of displays, screens, modules, and profiles, plus module-type counts. Review the project’s current settings and disable telemetry if that option is available and important to your household.

How MagicMirror calendars work

The built-in calendar module reads public iCal calendars and can combine multiple calendars. You normally add calendar URLs to the modules array in the configuration file, then restart MagicMirror². Because the core module expects a public feed, protect private events by using a provider’s read-only or tokenized feed rather than publishing a calendar that exposes sensitive details.

How MagicMirror weather works

The weather module supports current and forecast views. Documented providers include OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, WeatherAPI, Environment Canada, Weatherbit, and others. Its default weather update interval is 600,000 milliseconds, or 10 minutes; change that value only when you understand the provider’s request limits and terms.

Adding chores and reminders

MagicMirror² does not present a built-in family task system in its core documentation. Chores, shopping lists, and reminders generally require selecting, installing, and maintaining community modules. Check each module’s compatibility with your MagicMirror² version, authentication method, and screen resolution before making it part of a family’s daily routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical MagicMirror setup

  1. Install a supported Raspberry Pi operating system and MagicMirror² locally.
  2. Open the configuration file and define the default modules you need, such as clock, calendar, weather, and news.
  3. Insert your calendar feed URLs and weather-provider settings, including location and API credentials where required.
  4. Install community modules one at a time for chores, reminders, touch controls, or household services. Restart and test after each addition.
  5. Configure the Pi to launch the dashboard automatically and hide the desktop or cursor if the screen is intended to be passive.
  6. Document your configuration and back up the module list so a card failure does not require rebuilding the display from memory.

The benefit is control: you can change layout, code, data sources, and behavior. The cost is ongoing maintenance whenever a provider changes an API or a community module stops working.

What is OpenFrame, and is it ready for a family display?

OpenFrame describes itself as a free, open-source family dashboard for Raspberry Pi and other screens. Its feature list includes shared calendars from Google Calendar, Outlook, or CalDAV; photos; weather; Home Assistant; reminders; an AI assistant; and Telegram-based remote management.

It is worth watching if your home already uses Home Assistant or CalDAV and you prefer an open project. However, the project page does not provide a detailed release history or pricing table. Treat it as an emerging option: test the current image, confirm that your calendar authentication works, and verify how updates and backups are handled before making it the only family information source.

Which dashboard handles calendars, weather, and reminders best?

Calendar breadth

DAKboard has the broadest named provider coverage for ordinary households, including Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook Events, and generic ICS feeds. MagicMirror² is flexible when you can obtain a public iCal feed. Home Screens and OpenFrame may be better when your family prefers self-hosted data, but the exact provider support depends on their current modules and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather accuracy and update behavior

A dashboard does not create its own forecast; it displays the provider’s data. DAKboard lets you choose among several providers and adds alerts and air quality. MagicMirror² gives you provider choice but updates every 10 minutes by default. For any system, set the correct location, units, and time zone, and remember that a stale display can result from either the provider’s forecast or the dashboard’s refresh schedule.

Family chores and reminders

Home Screens has chores, meals, profiles, and scheduling as named family-oriented features. DAKboard connects to established task services and can show scheduled text with optional audio. MagicMirror² can become a powerful chore board, but you must select and maintain community modules. OpenFrame advertises reminders and remote management, with fewer published implementation details.

What are the privacy and maintenance trade-offs?

Concern Cloud-managed DAKboard Self-hosted Home Screens or MagicMirror²
Where data is processed Dashboard configuration and connected feeds are managed through the service; the Pi acts as a display device. Software runs on your Pi, though individual modules may contact external calendar or weather providers.
Updates Service-side features and fixes are handled by the provider; your display still needs a working network. You choose when to update, and you must handle compatibility and rollback issues.
Outage behavior Loss of internet access can prevent fresh cloud content; cached behavior depends on the service and device. Local modules can continue displaying stored data, but external calendars and forecasts still need internet access.
Privacy controls Review every calendar and task permission granted to the account. You control the server, but review module code, feed URLs, API keys, and Home Screens’ default anonymous telemetry.
Recovery Re-registering a replacement display is usually simpler than rebuilding a local installation. Maintain image and configuration backups so a failed microSD card does not erase the household setup.

How do you choose the right option?

  1. Choose DAKboard if a nontechnical family member must be able to edit the screen, you use several calendar providers, or you want managed integrations and scheduled reminders.
  2. Choose Home Screens if avoiding subscriptions is a priority and chores, meals, profiles, and a visual editor matter more than a large commercial integration catalog.
  3. Choose MagicMirror² if you enjoy configuration, want to write or adapt modules, and accept responsibility for local maintenance.
  4. Evaluate OpenFrame if its Home Assistant, CalDAV, or Telegram features match your home, but run a trial and confirm project activity before committing.

How can you troubleshoot a Raspberry Pi dashboard?

  • Calendar is blank: confirm the feed is accessible, the account permission has not expired, and the Pi’s clock and time zone are correct. DAKboard may simply be waiting for its plan’s next refresh interval.
  • Events show at the wrong time: check the calendar’s time zone, the Pi’s system time, and daylight-saving settings. Avoid mixing a local calendar with a feed exported in a different zone unless you understand the conversion.
  • Weather is stale: verify network access and the provider API key, then compare the dashboard’s update interval with the provider’s own update cadence. MagicMirror² defaults to a 10-minute weather update.
  • Screen is cropped or rotated: set the display’s HDMI resolution and orientation in the operating system, then adjust the dashboard layout. Test portrait mode before mounting the display.
  • Touch actions are unreliable: use larger controls, reduce the number of interactive modules, and keep a passive read-only screen if children or visitors might change settings accidentally.
  • Pi repeatedly reboots: replace the power supply and inspect the microSD card before changing dashboard software. Power instability commonly produces symptoms that resemble application crashes.
  • A module breaks after an update: restore the last working configuration, check the module’s compatibility notes, and update one component at a time rather than replacing the entire installation.

Which Raspberry Pi dashboard should you buy for a family?

For a first wall display, start with a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with at least 2GB RAM and an HDMI monitor. DAKboard is the practical recommendation when you value a browser editor, broad integrations, and minimal maintenance. Home Screens is the best no-subscription alternative for a family that wants chores and meals in the same interface. MagicMirror² remains the most extensible platform for makers, while OpenFrame is a promising project to test when its integrations fit your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Raspberry Pi show Google Calendar and weather at the same time?

Yes. DAKboard can place Google Calendar and a supported weather provider on one screen. MagicMirror² can combine its calendar and weather modules locally, while Home Screens and OpenFrame provide corresponding modules or integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need internet access for a Raspberry Pi family dashboard?

You need internet access whenever the dashboard must fetch cloud calendars, weather forecasts, photos, or remote-task data. A self-hosted interface can remain visible during an outage if it has cached or local content, but external feeds will stop updating.

Can I use a touchscreen instead of a passive wall display?

Yes. A touchscreen can make chores, profiles, and schedules interactive, especially with Home Screens or suitable MagicMirror² modules. For a hallway display, a passive screen avoids accidental edits and usually requires less support.

How often should I back up a self-hosted dashboard?

Back up after the initial configuration and whenever you add or remove modules, calendars, or automations. Keep both a copy of the configuration and a restorable microSD image so you can recover from either a software mistake or card failure.
