The best radio app for most iPhone and iPad owners is TuneIn Radio because it combines live broadcast stations, international internet radio, news, sports, podcasts, and audiobooks in one place. But it is not the best choice for every listener. Use Apple Music first if you want to try your iPhone’s built-in radio features, iHeart for many U.S. commercial stations and sports, NPR for public radio, Radio Garden for discovering stations around the world, and OpenTune or Receiver if avoiding accounts, subscriptions, or app-level advertising matters most.
There is one important limitation: these apps stream audio through Wi-Fi or cellular data. They are not independent over-the-air AM/FM receivers. Whether a station plays also depends on its internet feed, licensing, sports rights, location, and App Store region.
Quick recommendations
- Best overall: TuneIn Radio — the broadest all-purpose starting point, with ads and rights restrictions.
- Best built-in Apple option: Apple Music — live Apple stations and some broadcast stations can work without an Apple Music subscription.
- Best for U.S. local commercial radio and sports: iHeart — strongest for participating iHeart-owned stations, but sports and commercial-free listening are rights- and plan-dependent.
- Best simple tuner: RadioApp or Simple Radio — fewer distractions than full audio platforms.
- Best for global discovery: Radio Garden — find stations by rotating a globe.
- Best public-radio app: NPR — live NPR and participating member-station programming in the U.S.
- Best privacy-oriented option: OpenTune — no-login and no-ad claims, with the caveat that its privacy statement is developer-provided and the app is newer.
- Best one-time purchase: Receiver — custom streams, favorites, Apple ecosystem features, and no sign-in requirement for a listed $3.99 purchase.
- Best for exclusive subscription channels: SiriusXM.
- Best for personalized music: Pandora — an algorithmic music service, not a replacement for your local live station.
First, decide what you mean by radio
Radio apps do not all provide the same kind of audio. Comparing Pandora directly with TuneIn, for example, is misleading unless you know whether you want a live broadcaster or an automatically generated music station.
| Type | What you hear | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Live broadcast radio | A station’s current stream, including DJs, talk shows, news, sports coverage, and usually the station’s commercials. | TuneIn, iHeart, Simple Radio, RadioApp, Audacy |
| Internet radio | Live online stations from other cities or countries. Some are terrestrial broadcasters; others exist only online. | TuneIn, Radio Garden, radio.net, myTuner |
| Personalized radio | A playlist or station generated around an artist, song, genre, or listening history. It may feel like radio but is not a live broadcast. | Pandora, Apple Music stations, iHeart artist stations |
| Subscription radio | Exclusive channels and programming offered through a paid service. | SiriusXM |
| Public radio | NPR programming, local public-radio feeds, news, and podcasts from participating stations. | NPR, some Apple Music and TuneIn listings |
| Online-only radio | Stations created specifically for internet streaming, often with unusual music formats or independent presenters. | Live365 |
Most of the apps in this guide need an internet connection. They do not turn an iPhone or iPad into a conventional AM/FM tuner. The practical test is simple: if the app requires a live stream, it cannot receive a station when Wi-Fi and cellular data are both unavailable.

Detailed recommendations
1. TuneIn Radio: best overall
TuneIn is the safest first download for someone who wants one general-purpose radio app. Its U.S. App Store listing advertises more than 100,000 live stations from more than 197 countries, along with news, sports, podcasts, and audiobooks. Those figures are TuneIn’s catalog claims, not an independent count, and a large directory does not guarantee that every listing is current or playable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Search by station name, call sign, city, or frequency, or browse by local radio, music, news, sports, language, and location. TuneIn is particularly convenient when you regularly switch between a local station, an international broadcaster, and a sports or news channel.
The limitations are important. Free listening includes advertising, some sports and news content requires Premium, and stations can be unavailable because of incompatible stream formats, unreliable feeds, network problems, territorial restrictions, or licensing restrictions. TuneIn Premium is listed at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year after a trial in the checked snapshot, but its benefits do not mean that every station commercial disappears. Its Premium page describes selected commercial-free news and sports content, audiobooks, and reduced advertising.
Choose TuneIn if: you want the broadest all-around directory. Do not choose it solely because of the station count; confirm that your important local station, team, or program actually plays in your location.
2. Apple Music: best built-in option for iPhone and iPad owners
Apple’s Music app is easy to overlook because it is already installed. A user signed in with an Apple Account can listen to Apple’s live radio stations and supported broadcast stations without subscribing to Apple Music. Availability varies by country and station.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On iPhone, open Music → Radio and choose a live Apple station. To find a broadcaster, open Music → Search and search by station name, call sign, frequency, or nickname. On iPad, open Music, select Radio in the sidebar, or use Search with the same station details. Apple documents these steps for iPhone and iPad.
Live Apple Music radio cannot be skipped or rewound. Curated genre stations, personalized stations, and the broader on-demand music catalog generally require an Apple Music subscription. Apple Music is therefore a good first test for one known station, but not a complete replacement for a worldwide station directory or a dedicated sports service.
3. iHeart: best for many U.S. commercial stations and sports
iHeart is a strong choice when the station you care about is owned by iHeart or participates in its service. It combines live stations with news, sports radio, podcasts, and personalized artist stations. The U.S. listing supports iPhone and iPad and lists iOS/iPadOS 15 or later.
The free tier is useful, but paid plans change the experience. iHeart Plus offers commercial-free broadcast radio on supported stations. All Access adds on-demand music and the ability to download music to an iPhone or tablet for offline listening. The current help page distinguishes Plus from All Access; the checked listing showed Plus at $6.99 and All Access at $12.99, subject to change.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Sports availability is not simply a matter of whether the local FM station carries the game. League rights, local-market rules, blackout policies, station participation, and the listener’s location can all change the result. If iHeart says it cannot verify your location, update the app, open Settings → Account → Use Current Location, allow location access, and retry. That corrects a location error but cannot override a genuine rights restriction. See iHeart’s live-sports guidance.
4. Simple Radio: best for straightforward station listening
Simple Radio concentrates on finding, saving, and playing stations rather than building a large music-and-podcast ecosystem. Its App Store listing claims more than 90,000 stations worldwide and supports iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. As with every station-count claim in this guide, treat that figure as a publisher estimate rather than a guarantee of active, unique streams.

- BATTERY RADIO PERFECT FOR CAMPING, SEVERE WEATHER, OR POWER OUTAGES: Use with batteries or plug--radio comes with an AC adaptor, and also takes 4 batteries (AA/LR6/R6)
- EARPHONE/ HEADPHONE COMPATIBLE: Plug in any headphones with a 3.5 millimeter jack for privacy as you listen to this small portable radio
- EASY-TO-SEE DESIGN: This AM FM radio features a large dial with a fluorescent pointer that allows for easy viewing, even in the dark
- SMOOTH TUNING: This Panasonic battery powered radio includes a digital tuner with AFC (Auto Frequency Control) that enables easy and stable tuning
- SIMPLE, EASY-TO-USE FM/AM RADIO PORTABLE WITH HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Portable handheld radio with digital tuner has a simple, easy-to-use interface, with antennas that pick up both AM and FM signals
Premium removes display advertising and adds a sleep timer. That does not automatically remove commercials or sponsorships inside the station’s own audio stream. It is a good fit if you want a familiar station list and uncomplicated controls, but it offers less for listeners seeking exclusive sports rights, offline music, or personalized listening.
5. RadioApp: best traditional-radio interface
RadioApp is designed to feel more like an analog tuner than a content-heavy media platform. Its current listing highlights a simple live-radio interface, up to 90 seconds of live rewind, Shazam integration, weather information, and expanded CarPlay controls.
Recommended Free Tools
The rewind feature is useful when you missed a sentence or song title, but it should not be confused with podcast-style replay. The app can only provide the controls and buffer supported by its feed. Station coverage also depends on whether the broadcaster’s internet stream is available to RadioApp. Choose it for the interface, not for a guaranteed larger catalog or sports-rights advantage.
6. Radio Garden: best for discovering stations around the world
Radio Garden’s globe is its defining feature. Rotate the map, select a city or town, and explore stations from that place. It is especially enjoyable for international listening, language practice, and finding the sound of a particular city.
Radio Garden is less suitable as a structured daily-radio tool. It is not designed around podcasts, sports rights, personalized music, or a comprehensive schedule workflow. Its official site describes a collection of more than 40,000 stations, while the App Store listing and catalog presentation can change. Treat the service as a discovery layer: once you find a station you love, save it and consider installing the broadcaster’s own app as a backup.
7. NPR: best for public radio in the United States
The current NPR app is the strongest dedicated choice for NPR programming and participating U.S. public-radio stations. Its App Store listing includes live radio, NPR One-style discovery, podcasts, AirPlay, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay. The current listing requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later.
Use NPR when news, public-affairs programming, and member-station content matter more than a huge international directory. Availability of a particular local station depends on participation and the station’s feed. NPR+ provides selected extras, but the free app remains the appropriate starting point for ordinary live listening.
The App Store privacy label says NPR may use identifiers, usage data, location, and search history for different purposes. These labels are developer-provided disclosures, not independent privacy audits.
8. OpenTune: best for no-login, no-ad app experience
OpenTune is a newer privacy-oriented internet-radio app. Its listing claims more than 50,000 stations, custom stream URLs, CarPlay, AirPlay, Siri commands, VoiceOver support, no login, no ads, and no third-party trackers. That combination makes it appealing if you want a lightweight station player rather than a commercial audio ecosystem.
There are two qualifications. First, no app-level ads does not mean that the broadcaster’s stream contains no commercials or sponsorship messages. Second, the “no data collected” statement is the developer’s App Store privacy disclosure and has not been independently audited. OpenTune also has a smaller public review base and a newer product history than TuneIn, iHeart, or Pandora. It is a sensible privacy-first choice, but keep another app or the station’s website available for important stations.
9. Receiver: best one-time purchase for Apple users
Receiver is a paid internet-radio app with no sign-in requirement. The U.S. App Store listing shows a $3.99 purchase and advertises more than 40,000 stations, more than 25,000 podcasts, custom streams, iCloud-synced favorites, Siri Shortcuts, HomePod, AirPlay, CarPlay, Apple Watch, an alarm, and a sleep timer.
It is a strong choice for someone who values a focused Apple experience and would rather pay once than maintain a subscription. Its station directory is smaller by the publisher’s stated count than TuneIn’s, and the app does not give you SiriusXM-style exclusive channels or a major personalized-music catalog. The custom-stream feature is particularly useful when a station is missing from the main directory but publishes a compatible stream URL.
10. SiriusXM: best for exclusive subscription programming
SiriusXM is not a free radio directory and should not be compared with TuneIn as though both merely list local stations. It is a subscription service built around exclusive music, talk, sports, news, comedy, and personality-driven channels.

- Digital LCD Time Display with Backlight: with the large digital display on the digital radio, you can see exactly what station you tune to without having to guess. Screen backlight helps you see clock time and station clearly in the dark. Time format of this clock radio is 12Hr and 24Hr optional.
- AC Adapter or Battery Operated Radio for Home and Outdoor: the digital fm radio supports two power sources, either plug in the radio for indoor use while in kitchen, doing cleaning, cooking or reading without having to depend on batteries in stock, or using 4 AA alkaline batteries (not included) while working outside, doing yard work, walking the dogs, camping, hiking, beaching, drive in theaters etc. During power cut, the battery radio helps to let go of boredom and isolation, while emergency like bad storm or hurricane strikes, the small portable radio keeps you connected with the ourside world.
The app is free to download, but most content requires a plan. The U.S. App Store snapshot listed an App-Only purchase at $11.99; current plans, promotions, taxes, and feature limits can change, so check the official plans page before subscribing. Choose SiriusXM when its exclusive channels are the reason you want radio. Choose TuneIn, iHeart, or a station app when you primarily want ordinary local AM/FM streams.

Pandora creates personalized stations around artists, songs, and genres. It is a good fit for music discovery and background listening, but it is not primarily a live local-radio service. A Pandora artist station will not reliably deliver the same DJ, news bulletin, traffic report, or local commercial broadcast that you would hear on a terrestrial station.
The U.S. App Store listing describes personalized stations, six station modes, podcasts, CarPlay, and Pandora Plus and Premium plans. The checked listing showed Plus at $5.99 per month and Premium at $12.99 per month, and required iOS/iPadOS 18 or later. Plus and Premium support offline listening for qualifying content; that is downloaded music or other eligible content, not a continuously live station.
12. Live365: best for independent online radio
Live365 focuses on stations created by independent broadcasters, hobbyists, and professional programmers. It is worth trying when you want unusual music formats, specialty shows, or human-programmed stations that are not prominent in the major commercial-radio networks.
Live365 is online radio rather than a directory of every local AM/FM station. The App Store listing supports iPhone and iPad and presents music and talk from independent stations. It is a better match for discovery of niche programming than for guaranteed local news, major-league play-by-play, or a particular terrestrial station.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Also consider radio.net and myTuner
radio.net combines a large station-and-podcast directory with browsing by genre, location, and format. Its listing claims about 60,000 stations and shows a Prime option at $2.99 per month. The listing requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later in the checked snapshot.
myTuner is another broad directory for country, city, and genre browsing. Its listing claims more than 50,000 stations across 200 countries and territories and supports iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Multiple subscription options are shown, and the current listing requires iOS/iPadOS 15 or later.
These apps can be useful alternatives when TuneIn does not carry a station or when you prefer their browsing layout. Neither catalog figure should be treated as directly comparable: duplicates, multiple feeds, inactive entries, regional versions, and different counting methods can inflate totals.
Which app is best for your specific goal?
For a local AM/FM station
- Start with the broadcaster’s own app if one exists. It is often the best source for station schedules, local alerts, show archives, and station-specific rights.
- Try Apple Music by searching the station’s name, call sign, frequency, or nickname.
- Try iHeart for iHeart-owned stations, Audacy for Audacy-owned stations, NPR for participating public-radio stations, and TuneIn, Simple Radio, radio.net, or myTuner as broad directories.
- If you cannot find it, search the station’s website for a Listen Live button. A terrestrial station may not have an internet stream, may use a different web feed, or may restrict that feed outside its market.
Do not search only by a nickname. A call sign or frequency often finds the correct listing when several stations use similar branding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor sports
Use the app that holds the relevant audio rights, not automatically the app with the biggest station directory. iHeart can be strong for participating stations and sports radio. Audacy can be useful for its markets and documents CarPlay support, but its listing says some play-by-play is limited to the designated market area. TuneIn’s sports coverage also changes by league, season, territory, and subscription tier.
A station carrying a game over the air is not proof that the same game can stream everywhere. You may receive sports talk nationally but local play-by-play only in the home market, a substitute program during a blackout, or no audio because another service has the rights. Check the team, league, station, or app before relying on a stream for a live game.
For news and public radio
Choose NPR for NPR and participating U.S. member stations. TuneIn is more flexible if you want NPR alongside international news, commercial talk, and other networks. A broadcaster-specific app can provide the best local schedule and archives for one station.
For stations from other countries
Use Radio Garden for place-based exploration, TuneIn for a broad all-purpose directory, and myTuner or radio.net for country, city, and genre browsing. Simple Radio is convenient for saving international stations. OpenTune and Receiver are useful when you have a custom stream URL or want fewer account and advertising layers.
Rank #4
- Strong Reception and Clear Loud Sound: the portable radio pull in both AM/FM signals despite you live in the middle of nowhere. Big loud speaker provides crisp clear sound quality, no static or cross-talk. An earphone jack enables you to enjoy your favorite show without distraction.

- AC Plug in Radio and Battery Powered Radio: the small radio supports two power souces, you can either use it as an am fm radios for home with the included adapter or take it for outdoor activities with 4 AA alkaline batteries (not supplied).
- Versatile Radio for Various Needs: the portable am fm radio with best reception serves as a great companion in occasions like home, kitchen, bedside, doing yard work; for power outage as emergency kit like hurricanes or storms; for outdoor use, like walking, jogging, camping etc.
- Ideal Small Gifts: pick up DreamSky transistor radio portable as a present to your loved one, gift it to your mom on Mother's Day, to your dad on Father's Day, to your parents or grandparents, to your husband, to your wife and kids on Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, Birthday.
International access is never guaranteed. A station can be listed but unavailable in the United States because of music licensing, sports rights, territorial rules, its IP location, or a broken stream. The BBC is a useful example: BBC Sounds closed to listeners outside the UK on July 21, 2025; international listeners are directed to BBC.com or the BBC app, where availability remains rights-dependent. See the BBC’s international availability update.
For personalized music discovery
Choose Pandora if you want a station built around an artist or song. Apple Music and iHeart also offer personalized or curated music features. Use TuneIn, Simple Radio, NPR, or a station app instead when you want a real-time broadcaster with a DJ, news, talk format, or local programming.
For CarPlay
CarPlay support is separate from ordinary iPhone or iPad compatibility. NPR, OpenTune, RadioApp, Receiver, myTuner, Simple Radio, Audacy, and other apps advertise varying levels of vehicle support. Apple says compatible third-party audio apps appear in CarPlay automatically, but only apps that support CarPlay are shown.
To arrange supported apps, open Settings → General → CarPlay, select your vehicle, and tap Customize. If an app does not appear, confirm that the vehicle supports CarPlay, the iPhone is connected, the app is updated and opened at least once, and any required sign-in or location permission is complete. Follow Apple’s CarPlay app guidance and Audacy’s setup instructions.
For Apple Watch
TuneIn, iHeart, Simple Radio, Receiver, and myTuner list Apple Watch support. That does not mean every station can stream independently from the watch, nor that every player feature is available there. Radio Garden is primarily an iPhone and iPad discovery app, while Apple Watch availability should be checked on the current listing for any app not explicitly advertising it.
For an older iPhone or iPad
Among the compared apps with a stated current minimum, OpenTune lists the lowest requirement at iOS/iPadOS 14.3. iHeart lists 15, myTuner 15, TuneIn 16, SiriusXM 16, NPR and radio.net 17, and Pandora 18. These are current App Store snapshots, not permanent compatibility promises. An app update can raise the minimum version, and an older iPad may run an iPhone-compatible app without receiving an optimized iPad interface.
Free, ad-free, and subscription radio are different
When an app says it is free, ask which of these it means:
- Free to download: the app costs nothing in the App Store.
- Free to hear some content: selected stations or features play without a subscription.
- Free of app-inserted advertising: the app does not add its own visual or audio ads around the stream.
- Free of the broadcaster’s commercials: the station’s original stream contains no commercials, which is a separate and much rarer promise.
TuneIn has a free tier, but Premium adds selected commercial-free news and sports content, audiobooks, and reduced advertising. iHeart Plus offers commercial-free broadcast radio on supported stations. Simple Radio Premium specifically removes display ads. OpenTune claims no ads in the app. None of those statements should be interpreted as a guarantee that every live station stream is silent during its normal commercial breaks. A broadcaster may insert its own commercials, sponsorships, public-service messages, or replacement programming.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →SiriusXM and the broader Apple Music catalog require subscriptions even though their apps are free to download. Pandora has a free tier as well as paid Plus and Premium plans. Receiver is a one-time purchase rather than a free app. Check the current listing or official plan page before subscribing, particularly if you subscribe through Apple, because prices and billing terms can differ by country and channel.
Pause, rewind, and offline listening
Live radio does not automatically work like a podcast. The available controls depend on the app and the station feed:
- Apple Music live radio: Apple says live Apple Music stations cannot be skipped or rewound.
- RadioApp: advertises up to 90 seconds of live rewind.
- Audacy: advertises rewind for sports and news stations and topic chapters.
- Many ordinary streams: play live with no user-accessible rewind buffer.
Offline downloads are a separate feature. iHeart All Access supports downloading music to an iPhone or tablet. Pandora Plus and Premium support offline listening for qualifying content. TuneIn Premium’s listed benefits focus on selected sports, news, audiobooks, and reduced advertising rather than downloading an ongoing live station. A live broadcast cannot generally be downloaded as a continuously current stream.
How much cellular data does radio use?
Streaming data depends on bitrate, codec, buffering, advertising, and whether the app switches feeds. Approximate usage is:
| Stream bitrate | Approximate data per hour |
|---|---|
| 64 kbps | 28.8 MB |
| 128 kbps | 57.6 MB |
| 320 kbps | 144 MB |
At 128 kbps, listening for two hours per day would use roughly 3.5 GB per month before overhead. That is a calculation, not a provider guarantee. For long sessions, use Wi-Fi, select a lower-quality stream if the app permits it, or disable cellular access for an individual app at Settings → Cellular. Apple documents per-app cellular controls in its cellular-data settings guide.

Privacy and location considerations
Radio apps can request more data than a simple audio player because location improves local-station recommendations and can be required to enforce sports blackouts.
- Location: may be used to identify local stations or verify that a sports stream is allowed in your market.
- Advertising identifiers and usage data: commercial services may use these for advertising, analytics, or personalization.
- Accounts: some apps require or encourage sign-in for favorites, subscriptions, or syncing; Receiver advertises no sign-in requirement, and OpenTune advertises no login.
- Custom streams: OpenTune and Receiver can be useful when you want to enter a stream directly instead of relying only on a large directory.
The iHeart App Store privacy label says location, identifiers, and usage data may be used to track users. NPR’s listing discloses identifiers, usage data, location, and search history for different purposes. OpenTune’s listing says the developer collects no data, but Apple marks the disclosure as developer-provided rather than independently verified. App Store privacy labels are useful disclosures, not security audits.
What to do when a station is missing or will not play
A station appearing in search does not prove that its stream is currently available. The feed may be offline, outdated, incompatible, overloaded, geographically restricted, or temporarily replaced because of program rights.
- Search by call sign, frequency, and city. Try the official station name rather than a nickname.
- Try another listing. A directory may contain an old feed and a newer feed for the same station.
- Check the station’s website. Open its Listen Live player in Safari and confirm that the broadcaster is streaming.
- Try the station’s own app. This is often the best fallback for a high-priority local station, team, or public broadcaster.
- Try another directory. Use Apple Music, TuneIn, iHeart, Simple Radio, radio.net, or myTuner.
- Switch networks. Test Wi-Fi and cellular separately, especially if the stream works in a browser but not on one connection.
- Update or reopen the app. A changed stream URL or temporary session failure can look like a missing station.
TuneIn specifically lists incompatible formats, unreliable feeds, network issues, territorial restrictions, and licensing restrictions among the reasons a station may not work. If an app plays a different program than the FM signal, that may be intentional: the internet feed can be delayed, web-only, ad-inserted, or substituted because of rights. Do not assume it is an app defect unless the broadcaster confirms that the online stream should match the terrestrial broadcast.
Fixing common playback problems
The app stops when the screen locks
Confirm that the app supports background playback, then check the network signal, Low Power Mode, and whether iOS terminated the app after a crash. If only one app stops, test the same station in the broadcaster’s app or website. Some stations use app-specific sessions that fail when the player is backgrounded.
A sports stream says you are in the wrong location
Update the app, enable location access, and in iHeart use Settings → Account → Use Current Location. Then retry the stream. This fixes an inaccurate location estimate but cannot bypass a legitimate blackout or designated-market restriction.
The local recommendations are wrong
Location databases can be broad or outdated. Search manually by call sign, frequency, city, or station website. Apple Music supports searches by station name, call sign, frequency, and nickname. TuneIn says location services improve local-radio results, but manual search remains the more reliable test.

Check your Apple Account’s App Store country or region. App availability is often determined by the store region associated with the account, not only by the country where you are physically standing. A service may also be installed but show different stations after your IP location changes.
Which radio app should you install first?
Use this practical order:
- Try Apple Music if you already know the station you want. It costs nothing extra for live Apple radio and supported broadcast stations, although availability varies.
- Install TuneIn when you need one broad directory for local, international, news, sports, podcasts, and more.
- Add the broadcaster’s own app when one station, team, public-radio service, or local-news source matters most.
- Choose iHeart or Audacy for the relevant U.S. commercial-radio network and its participating sports or talk programming.
- Use Radio Garden, myTuner, or radio.net when international discovery is the priority.
- Choose OpenTune or Receiver if privacy, custom streams, simplicity, or avoiding an ongoing subscription outweighs having the largest catalog.
- Choose Pandora if you really want personalized music rather than a live station, or SiriusXM if you specifically want its exclusive subscription channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I listen to AM or FM radio on an iPhone without internet?
The apps in this guide stream stations over Wi-Fi or cellular data. They do not provide ordinary over-the-air reception, so use a physical radio when you need AM/FM reception without an internet connection.
What is the best free radio app for local stations?
Start with Apple Music for a known station, then try TuneIn, iHeart, Simple Radio, or the broadcaster’s own app. Free does not necessarily mean ad-free, and a station may be unavailable outside its broadcast market.
Why is a station listed but unavailable?
The stream may be offline, outdated, incompatible, overloaded, geographically restricted, or blocked by program or sports rights. Search by call sign or frequency, try the station’s website or own app, and test another directory.
Which radio apps work with Apple CarPlay?
NPR, OpenTune, RadioApp, Receiver, myTuner, Simple Radio, and Audacy advertise varying levels of CarPlay support. Confirm the app and vehicle support CarPlay, then manage compatible apps at Settings → General → CarPlay → select your vehicle → Customize.
Can I download live radio for offline listening?
Generally no. iHeart All Access and Pandora paid plans support offline downloads of qualifying music or other content, but that is different from downloading a continuously live broadcast. Podcasts may have separate download features.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Install Apple Music first if you want to test a known station, and use TuneIn as the general-purpose directory. Add the broadcaster’s own app for the station, team, or public-radio service you care about most. Choose OpenTune for a no-login, privacy-oriented player, Receiver for a one-time Apple-focused purchase, Radio Garden for global exploration, Pandora for personalized music, and SiriusXM only when its exclusive subscription programming is the point.
