There is no single best Python framework for every multi-agent application. LangGraph is the strongest general default when you need durable, stateful, auditable workflows; CrewAI is usually the fastest way to build role-based teams; Microsoft Agent Framework fits Azure, Microsoft Foundry, .NET, and AutoGen or Semantic Kernel migrations; LlamaIndex Workflows is especially well suited to retrieval and document pipelines; Google ADK fits Google Cloud teams; and OpenAI Agents SDK suits tightly scoped delegation with a compact API.
The right choice depends on the hardest constraint in your system: restartable execution, human approval, role-based collaboration, retrieval, provider portability, or cloud alignment. This guide compares the execution models, state handling, tools, observability, migration implications, and operational trade-offs so you can select a framework for production rather than for a short demo.
What should you compare before choosing a multi-agent framework?
A multi-agent framework is more than a wrapper around an LLM call. It defines how agents coordinate, where state lives, how a failed run resumes, how tools are invoked, and how people can inspect or approve work. The framework that produces the quickest prototype may become difficult to operate when a workflow runs for hours, branches repeatedly, or must survive a process restart.
Evaluate each candidate against these dimensions:
- Execution control: Can you express deterministic code and model-driven decisions together, or are you limited to a high-level agent loop?
- State and recovery: Does the runtime persist checkpoints, resume after failure, and separate short-term from long-term memory?
- Coordination model: Is collaboration represented as a graph, role-based crew, handoff, or event-driven workflow?
- Human gates: Can a run pause for review, accept edited state, and continue without restarting from scratch?
- Tools and MCP: How are tools, Model Context Protocol servers, permissions, and errors represented?
- Provider portability: Can you switch model providers, or does the framework assume one ecosystem?
- Observability and evaluation: Are traces, intermediate messages, tool calls, and outcomes available for debugging and regression tests?
- Retrieval support: Does the framework naturally model document ingestion, search, citations, and concurrent retrieval work?
- Operational complexity: How much infrastructure and architecture must your team own before the system is reliable?
No independent cross-framework benchmark establishes a universal winner for latency, reliability, token use, or cost. A 2026 comparative survey reviewed seven frameworks, but its categories are decision aids rather than a neutral performance ranking. Measure your own representative workflow before committing to a production architecture.

Which Python frameworks are strongest for multi-agent applications?
| Framework | Primary coordination model | Best fit | Important strengths | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LangGraph | Explicit graph of deterministic and LLM-driven nodes | Long-running, stateful, auditable applications | Durable execution, persistence, restart and resume, human-in-the-loop state editing, memory, streaming, and tracing through LangSmith | Lower-level model requires more architecture and state design |
| CrewAI | Flows controlling Crews of role-playing agents | Fast prototypes and role-based research, content, or business workflows | Roles, delegation, events, branching, and shared Flow state | Autonomous crew behavior can require additional controls for production reliability |
| Microsoft Agent Framework | Functional or graph-based workflows plus agents, tools, and sessions | Azure, Microsoft Foundry, .NET, and AutoGen or Semantic Kernel estates | Enterprise features, identity and telemetry integration, MCP servers, middleware, context providers, and sessions | Check the availability and maturity of each component before adoption |
| LlamaIndex Workflows | Event-driven Python steps | Retrieval, document, and knowledge pipelines | Steps can retrieve, call models, request human input, update state, branch, loop, and run concurrently | Less natural for an unconstrained conversational team whose main structure is roles rather than events |
| Google ADK | Opinionated runtime with workflow support | Gemini and Google Cloud deployments | Batteries-included runtime, workflow features, and debugging support | Provider and cloud alignment can reduce portability outside the Google ecosystem |
| OpenAI Agents SDK | Agent handoffs and tool calls | Small sets of assistants with clean delegation | Compact API and minimal abstraction for tightly scoped systems | More complex durable orchestration may require additional application architecture |
| LangChain | Higher-level agent loops and integrations | Broad model and tool integration with a conventional starting point | Large integration surface and a gentle entry point | Move to LangGraph when branching, persistence, or approval gates become central |
Why is LangGraph the strongest general default?
LangGraph is a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for long-running, stateful agents. You represent the application as a graph whose nodes can contain ordinary deterministic code or LLM-driven decisions. Edges make transitions explicit, which helps reviewers understand exactly how a run can proceed.
What LangGraph handles well
- Durable execution: Persisted state allows a run to continue after a worker failure instead of beginning again.
- Human intervention: A workflow can pause for inspection or modification, then resume with the approved state.
- Memory: Short-term run state and long-term memory can be designed separately.
- Streaming and tracing: Intermediate events can be streamed, while LangSmith provides tracing for execution analysis.
- Auditability: Explicit nodes and transitions make it easier to explain why a tool was called or why a branch was taken.
Choose LangGraph when a workflow must be restartable, interruptible, and reviewable. Its cost is design effort: you must define state schemas, transitions, retry behavior, and idempotency rather than relying entirely on a high-level crew abstraction.
Should you use CrewAI for role-based agent teams?
CrewAI is a strong choice when the business process naturally maps to specialists such as researcher, analyst, writer, and reviewer. It separates Flows, which manage state, events, branching, and overall control, from Crews, which are teams of role-playing agents that collaborate and delegate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How CrewAI structures an application
A practical production pattern is to start with a Flow and invoke a Crew only for the portion that benefits from autonomous collaboration. The Flow remains responsible for triggers, state transitions, retries, approvals, and final outputs; the Crew handles a bounded piece of complex work.
CrewAI documentation states: “With over 100,000 developers certified through our community courses, CrewAI is the standard for enterprise-ready AI automation.” That is a vendor-published claim about its community courses, not an independent market-share or quality statistic.
When CrewAI is a poor fit
If every transition must be deterministic, legally auditable, or resumable at an exact checkpoint, a graph-oriented runtime may require less custom control code. A free-form crew can also create extra model calls, unclear delegation loops, and difficult-to-reproduce outcomes unless you constrain roles, tools, and termination conditions.

When is Microsoft Agent Framework the right choice?
Microsoft Agent Framework is the natural candidate for organizations already centered on Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft identity, .NET, or existing AutoGen and Semantic Kernel investments. Microsoft describes it as combining AutoGen’s agent abstractions with Semantic Kernel’s enterprise features and as the direct successor to both projects.

- Agents and tool definitions
- MCP servers
- Sessions and context providers
- Middleware and telemetry
- Functional workflows and graph-based workflows
Because the framework and its components can change quickly, verify whether the specific feature you need is in preview or generally available before designing a long-lived platform around it. This is especially important for migration plans that assume API compatibility with an earlier AutoGen or Semantic Kernel application.
Is LlamaIndex Workflows best for RAG and document-heavy systems?
Often, yes. LlamaIndex Workflows model an application as event-driven steps written in ordinary Python. A step can call an LLM, retrieve documents, request human input, update shared state, branch, loop, or dispatch concurrent work.
Why the event model helps retrieval applications
Document systems commonly need a sequence such as ingestion, chunking, metadata validation, parallel retrieval, reranking, answer synthesis, citation checking, and human review. Event-driven steps let you make those stages explicit without pretending that the application is a team of conversational personalities.
Select LlamaIndex Workflows when retrieval and knowledge operations are the core of the product. If the central problem is instead a long-running business process with many approval points and strict restart semantics, compare its state and recovery design with LangGraph before deciding.

Google ADK
The comparative survey maps Google ADK to Google Cloud and describes it as an opinionated, batteries-included runtime with workflow and debugging support. It is a sensible choice when Gemini models, Google Cloud services, and the team’s existing operational tooling dominate the decision. Confirm the target release’s supported providers and model features, especially if you expect to move workloads later.

OpenAI Agents SDK
OpenAI Agents SDK fits a tightly scoped set of agents, tools, and handoffs where the team values a compact API and minimal abstraction. It can be an efficient starting point for delegation chains that do not require a large state machine. For long-running jobs, elaborate branching, or multiple approval checkpoints, explicitly design persistence and recovery rather than assuming the SDK supplies them automatically.
Where does LangChain fit compared with LangGraph?
LangChain is the higher-level application framework with broad model and tool integrations. LangGraph is its lower-level orchestration runtime. Start with LangChain when you need a conventional agent loop and many integrations with little initial control-flow code.
Move to LangGraph when the application acquires durable state, branching, persistent memory, approval gates, or a requirement to replay and audit intermediate decisions. Treat that move as an architectural change: identify the state that must survive a restart, define explicit transitions, and add tests for each recovery path.
Which framework should you choose for a specific requirement?
| Hardest requirement | First framework to evaluate | Why | Question to validate in a prototype |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resume a multi-hour run after failure | LangGraph | Durable execution and persisted state are central capabilities | Can a worker restart at every important checkpoint without duplicate side effects? |
| Several specialists collaborating on a bounded task | CrewAI | Roles, delegation, and Crews map directly to the work | Can the Flow constrain the Crew’s tools, budget, and stopping conditions? |
| Azure, Microsoft Foundry, .NET, or migration from AutoGen/Semantic Kernel | Microsoft Agent Framework | It is designed around those Microsoft ecosystem requirements | Are the required components available at the maturity level your deployment permits? |
| RAG, document processing, and knowledge operations | LlamaIndex Workflows | Event-driven retrieval and concurrent document steps are first-class patterns | Can retrieval, citation checking, and human review be tested as independent steps? |
| Google Cloud and Gemini alignment | Google ADK | Its opinionated runtime is designed for that ecosystem | Do the supported model and deployment features match your target release? |
| Small delegation chain with few abstractions | OpenAI Agents SDK | Compact handoffs and tool use keep the application surface small | What application layer will provide persistence, retries, and approval records? |
| Broad integrations and a conventional first prototype | LangChain | Higher-level abstractions reduce initial integration work | At what point will stateful branching require a move to LangGraph? |
How do you select a framework step by step?
- Write down the non-negotiable constraint. Choose one primary driver: durable resume, role-based collaboration, retrieval, cloud alignment, or minimal abstraction. If you list every feature as equally important, the decision will remain ambiguous.
- Choose the coordination model. Decide whether the system is best represented as an explicit graph, a Flow that invokes a Crew, an event workflow, or a set of handoffs. Sketch the workflow on paper before evaluating APIs.
- Check model and tool portability. List the providers, models, private endpoints, and MCP servers you must support. Test authentication, structured output, streaming, tool errors, and fallback behavior rather than checking only whether a model can answer one prompt.
- Design persistence and approval before production. Specify what state is saved, how often checkpoints are written, how side effects are made idempotent, who can approve a step, and how an edited decision is recorded.
- Add tracing and evaluation early. Capture model calls, tool inputs and outputs, branch decisions, latency, token usage, and final quality. Build a small regression set from real tasks.
- Prototype one representative workflow. Include a failure, a timeout, a tool error, a human pause, and a process restart. Measure reliability, latency, token use, and debugging effort; do not treat a short happy-path demo as a production benchmark.
How should a production multi-agent architecture handle state and failure?
Keep business state separate from transient conversation text. Business state might include document identifiers, approval status, account data, or completed actions; conversational state contains messages and intermediate reasoning. Persist the former explicitly and retain only the latter that is needed for replay, context, or audit.
Make side effects idempotent
A resumed run may revisit a node after a timeout. Every operation that sends an email, creates a ticket, charges an account, or changes a record should accept an idempotency key and safely return the existing result when retried.
Define retry boundaries
Retry a temporary model or network failure, but do not blindly retry a tool that may have completed successfully. Record the attempt, error class, and external request identifier so an operator can reconcile the result.

Keep approval records immutable
Store who approved or edited a state, when it happened, what evidence they saw, and which workflow version continued. Human-in-the-loop functionality is useful only when the approval itself is auditable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do human approval gates work in multi-agent systems?
An approval gate should pause the workflow at a known state, present the proposed action and supporting evidence, and resume with an explicit decision. Do not implement approval as a hidden prompt asking an agent to role-play a human; the authorization must come from your application or identity system.
LangGraph documents state inspection and modification for this pattern. LlamaIndex Workflows can model a step that requests human input. Other frameworks may require you to add a durable job store, approval service, and callback mechanism around the agent runtime. Test the case where approval is denied, expires, or arrives after the worker that created the request has been replaced.
How should you evaluate observability and quality?
At minimum, a trace should connect a user request to every agent decision, model call, tool invocation, retrieved source, retry, approval, and final output. Record model name and configuration, prompt or template version, tool arguments, latency, token counts when available, and error details.
Evaluate more than answer quality. Track whether the system selected the correct tool, respected permissions, stopped when the task was complete, recovered without duplicate side effects, and produced an answer grounded in the available documents. Run the same representative cases after changing prompts, models, tools, or framework versions.

- Choosing by demo speed alone: A five-minute prototype does not reveal restart, approval, or observability costs.
- Letting every agent call every tool: Use role-specific permissions and narrow tool schemas to reduce accidental actions.
- Allowing unbounded delegation: Set maximum turns, time, token budgets, and explicit completion conditions.
- Persisting only chat history: Save structured business state and external request identifiers as well.
- Ignoring provider lock-in: Test the exact models and features you may need, including structured output, streaming, embeddings, and tool calling.
- Skipping failure tests: Force timeouts, malformed tool responses, duplicate callbacks, and process restarts before launch.
- Confusing vendor claims with benchmarks: Community certifications or framework popularity claims do not establish reliability, cost, or market share.
Is AutoGen still maintained, and what does migration mean?
Microsoft describes Microsoft Agent Framework as the direct successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel. That makes the new framework the Microsoft-documented path for teams planning forward development, but it does not by itself guarantee that every older AutoGen package, extension, or API will receive the same treatment.

Before migrating, inventory agent abstractions, tool contracts, state stores, telemetry, prompts, and deployment assumptions. Build a compatibility test around your real workflows, then migrate one bounded path while preserving a rollback route. Verify the current maintenance and release status of every dependency at the time you commit.
What should you know about cost and published comparisons?
Framework choice affects engineering and operating cost through the number of model calls, retries, tracing volume, persistence, and infrastructure components, but the available material does not provide a neutral cross-framework cost benchmark. Do not infer price or performance from a framework’s marketing language or repository popularity.
Cloud alignment can still create a genuine deployment decision. Azure AI Foundry, Google Cloud, and AWS Bedrock or equivalent services may simplify identity, networking, model access, and operations when the selected framework already fits that ecosystem. Check current pricing, regional availability, quotas, and partner eligibility before treating a cloud integration as an economic advantage.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the practical recommendation?
Use LangGraph as the default evaluation starting point for a serious, stateful workflow. Choose CrewAI when role-based collaboration is the defining shape and a Flow can contain the autonomous work. Choose Microsoft Agent Framework for Microsoft-centered estates, LlamaIndex Workflows for retrieval and document pipelines, Google ADK for Google Cloud alignment, and OpenAI Agents SDK for compact delegation with limited orchestration complexity. Use LangChain for a high-level integration-first start, with a planned path to LangGraph if durability and control become central.
Whichever framework you select, prototype the failure and approval paths—not only the happy path—and measure your own reliability, latency, token use, and debugging effort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine two Python agent frameworks in one application?
Yes, if you define a narrow boundary between them. For example, an orchestration runtime can call a retrieval workflow as a service or node, while the retrieval component owns indexing and citation logic. Keep one system responsible for durable state and retries so that a failure cannot leave two runtimes disagreeing about progress.
What should I log when an agent makes a harmful or incorrect decision?
Preserve the complete trace: workflow version, model configuration, messages, tool schemas, tool arguments and results, retrieved context, retries, and approval events. Redact secrets and personal data, and apply retention rules that match your legal and security requirements. A final answer alone is rarely enough to reproduce the decision.
How can I migrate a prototype without rewriting everything?
First freeze the prototype’s tool contracts and create tests for representative tasks. Then introduce structured state, bounded turns, idempotency keys, and tracing around the existing agent loop. Move one workflow branch at a time into the target runtime and compare outputs and failure behavior before retiring the old path.
Does the framework determine my model bill?
Not by itself. The largest drivers are model choice, prompt and context size, number of agents and turns, retrieval volume, retries, and parallel work. Instrument those values during the prototype; without measurements, a simpler-looking framework may still produce a more expensive workflow.
