Best overall for most controlled studies: Tobii Pro Spark is a practical screen-based tracker when 60 Hz (or 33 Hz) is sufficient. Choose Tobii Pro Spectrum for laboratory work that requires up to 1,200 Hz, Pupil Core for open software and custom real-time integration, Tobii Pro Glasses 3 for mobile studies with synchronized scene video, and Pupil Invisible for unobtrusive wearable capture. For accessibility, Windows Eye Control is the simplest built-in Windows route on supported hardware; OptiKey is the strongest free, open-source option for AAC and broader computer control.
These products serve different jobs. A fast laboratory tracker, a wearable research rig and an eye-gaze communication system should not be judged by the same specification. The guide below separates those use cases and identifies the trade-offs that affect accuracy, setup, privacy, compatibility and cost.
Quick recommendations by use case
| Use case | Best fit | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| General screen-based research | Tobii Pro Spark | 60 Hz or 33 Hz video-based pupil and corneal-reflection tracking, with 0.45° accuracy and 0.26° RMS precision under optimal conditions. | Not intended for experiments where micro-saccades or extremely fast movements are the primary outcome. |
| High-speed laboratory research | Tobii Pro Spectrum | Selectable 60, 120, 150, 300, 600 or 1,200 Hz modes, stereo cameras and pupil-diameter measurement. | Higher speed brings higher equipment, integration and laboratory costs; exact capability depends on hardware version. |
| Open, programmable head-mounted research | Pupil Core | Open software, documented APIs, 200 Hz eye cameras, 3D gaze rays and real-time access through Pupil Capture. | Academic price is listed as €2,850; calibration and mounting require careful setup. |
| Natural movement with scene recording | Tobii Pro Glasses 3 | Wearable binocular tracking at 50 or 100 Hz, 1,920 × 1,080 scene camera, slippage compensation and TTL synchronization. | Recorder battery time is 105 minutes, so longer sessions need a planned charging or recorder swap. |
| Unobtrusive wearable capture | Pupil Invisible | Wearable glasses with 200 Hz gaze data after upload to Pupil Cloud and a companion app. | Confirm current cloud retention, privacy, export and account terms before collecting participant data. |
| Built-in Windows accessibility | Windows Eye Control | Cursor, on-screen keyboard, text-to-speech, Start menu, task view, calibration and pause controls are integrated into Windows 10 and 11. | Microsoft officially supports a defined device list; behavior with other trackers can vary. |
| Open-source AAC and computer control | OptiKey | Free Windows software covering symbol AAC, predictive typing, mouse control, speaking, plugins and dynamic keyboards. | A compatible eye tracker is still required. |
What to compare before buying or deploying an eye tracker
Sampling rate is not the same as accuracy
Sampling rate describes how often the system records gaze or eye-camera frames. A high rate helps resolve short events such as micro-saccades, but it does not automatically make gaze coordinates more accurate. Accuracy describes the distance between the reported and actual gaze location, while precision describes how tightly repeated samples cluster. Spark, for example, is specified at 0.45° accuracy and 0.26° RMS precision under optimal conditions; Spectrum’s headline advantage is its selectable speed, not a guarantee that every setup will be more accurate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDecide whether the participant can move naturally
Screen trackers are easier to deploy and keep the display, calibration target and participant in a controlled geometry. Wearable systems allow walking, turning and interaction with real objects, but they add fit, slippage, scene-camera and synchronization issues. A study of reading on one monitor and a study of shopping in a physical environment need different hardware even if both measure pupil size.

Check pupil and eye-state outputs
If pupil diameter, blink rate or eye-state classification is an outcome, confirm that the selected model exposes those measurements. Spectrum, Pupil Core and Glasses 3 explicitly provide pupil-size data. Pupil Invisible documentation describes gaze and eye-state outputs, including blink detection from eye video. A product that only supplies cursor coordinates may be unsuitable for physiological or detailed oculomotor analysis.
Plan calibration, slippage and head movement
Calibration quality is part of the measurement, not a one-time checkbox. Pupil Core supports a five-point calibration and can output both 2D gaze and 3D gaze rays. Glasses 3 offers one-point or automatic calibration and slippage compensation. For a screen tracker, keep the participant within the recommended distance and repeat calibration after a meaningful posture change. For glasses, fit the frame securely, mark the fit if your protocol allows it, and record any adjustment as an event.
Separate live control from post-hoc analysis
Accessibility needs immediate gaze-to-action behavior. Research may need a live stream for triggering stimuli plus a richer recording for later analysis. Pupil Core provides real-time data through Pupil Capture and post-hoc work in Pupil Player. Pupil Invisible supplies 200 Hz gaze data after upload to Pupil Cloud, so it is less suitable when an experiment must react to gaze locally with no upload step.

Screen-based research trackers
Tobii Pro Spark: the sensible default for moderate-speed studies
Spark uses video-based pupil and corneal-reflection tracking with dark- and bright-pupil illumination. It runs at 60 Hz by default or 33 Hz, and Tobii specifies 0.26° RMS precision and 0.45° accuracy under optimal conditions. Those characteristics fit classroom observation, usability testing, remote-testing workflows and accessibility studies in which millisecond-level timing is not the central question.
Choose Spark when participants can remain in front of a display and you value a straightforward, controlled setup. It is also a reasonable starting point for pilot work: the sampling rate is sufficient for fixation, dwell-time, saccade and area-of-interest analyses that do not depend on very brief events. Do not present its optimal-condition accuracy as a guarantee; glasses, unusual lighting, posture, display geometry and calibration quality can reduce performance.

Tobii Pro Spectrum: for intensive scientific timing
Spectrum is designed for intensive laboratory research. Depending on hardware version, it offers 60, 120, 150, 300, 600 or 1,200 Hz, stereo cameras, pupil-diameter measurement and tracking modes for human and primate work. The 1,200 Hz maximum is useful when the experiment must resolve very rapid eye movements or micro-saccades rather than simply estimate where someone looked on a screen.
The trade-off is a more demanding laboratory project. Select the lowest rate that still resolves your event of interest, because higher-rate acquisition increases data volume, storage, synchronization and analysis requirements. Confirm the exact hardware version and supported mode before budgeting; the specification lists a range rather than one universal rate.
Pupil Core: programmable, head-mounted and open
Pupil Core is a dark-pupil system built around a 3D model. It supports binocular or monocular configurations, five-point calibration, 3D gaze rays, 2D gaze and pupil-diameter measurements. Its published technical specification lists 192 × 192-pixel eye cameras running at 200 Hz, approximately 0.60° accuracy with calibration and 0.02° precision.
The open software stack is the main reason to choose Core. Pupil Capture exposes real-time data for custom experiments, while Pupil Player supports post-hoc analysis. The listed academic price is €2,850; treat that as the stated academic price for the specification, not a universal total cost. Mounting, a recording computer, accessories, taxes, shipping and staff time can add to the project budget.
Core is a strong fit when you need custom triggers, a research-specific application or access to gaze rays rather than a closed cursor stream. It is less attractive when your team wants a turnkey screen study with minimal hardware preparation.

Wearable trackers for naturalistic research
Tobii Pro Glasses 3
Glasses 3 combines binocular corneal-reflection and dark-pupil tracking with a scene camera. It records at 50 or 100 Hz, measures pupil size and supports one-point or automatic calibration. Tobii specifies 0.6° accuracy, slippage compensation, a 1,920 × 1,080 scene camera, TTL synchronization and 105 minutes of recorder battery time.
The scene video is important when the research question concerns what was viewed in the physical world. TTL synchronization helps align gaze with external equipment such as motion-capture, physiology or stimulus systems. Slippage compensation can reduce drift from ordinary movement, but it does not remove the need to check fit and recalibrate when the glasses shift. For sessions longer than 105 minutes, build charging, recorder changes or breaks into the protocol.
Pupil Invisible
Pupil Invisible is designed to be unobtrusive during everyday movement. Pupil Labs documents 200 Hz gaze data after upload to Pupil Cloud and a companion app, along with gaze and eye-state outputs such as blink detection from eye video.
This workflow can simplify collection outside a laboratory, but cloud processing changes the governance question. Before procurement, verify the current account model, data retention, export format, regional hosting, participant consent language and whether your institution permits uploading eye video or derived gaze data. Those terms can change independently of the glasses hardware.
Accessibility: Windows Eye Control and OptiKey
Windows Eye Control
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Eye Control features that can move the pointer, provide an on-screen keyboard, speak typed text, open Start and task view, and expose calibration and pause controls. Microsoft lists these supported devices: Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, EyeX, Tobii Dynavox PCEye Plus, EyeMobile Mini, EyeMobile Plus, PCEye Mini, PCEye Explore, I-Series+ devices, selected integrated laptops and monitors, and EyeTech TM5 Mini.

- Immersive In-Game Head Tracking — Converts natural head movements into camera control for ultra-realistic gameplay in flight, racing, and combat simulators..
- Precision Tracking with TrackClip PRO — Attaches to hats or visors and reflects infrared signals for accurate, low-latency tracking—even in low-light environments.
- True 6DOF Motion Capture — Tracks yaw, pitch, roll, and movement across X, Y, and Z axes for full 3D control in supported games and simulation software.
- Customizable Software Profiles — Fine-tune tracking speed, motion curves, and dead zones, or select from preset profiles for plug-and-play setup.
- Stable Mounting on Most Monitors — Magnetic base and adjustable legs ensure secure installation on nearly any screen, with quick setup and removal.
Microsoft’s list is the compatibility boundary to start with. The documentation says experience with other devices may vary, so a tracker working in a research SDK is not automatically a reliable Windows Eye Control device. Test the exact Windows edition, USB connection, display position and user profile before deployment.
OptiKey
OptiKey is a free, open-source suite of Windows applications for eye-controlled communication and computer access. OptiKey Symbol provides symbol-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). OptiKey Chat supports typing and predictive text. OptiKey Mouse provides cursor movement, clicking, scrolling, dragging and zooming. OptiKey Pro adds full computer control, speaking, plugins and dynamic keyboards.
OptiKey does not replace the tracker: a compatible eye-tracking device is required for eye operation. Its advantage is flexibility. A school or assistive-technology team can choose a symbol layout, keyboard or plugin without committing to a proprietary communication environment. Plan dwell-time settings, accidental-activation prevention, keyboard size and text-to-speech voice as part of the user’s access assessment rather than treating calibration alone as setup.
Where the consumer Tobii Eye Tracker 5 fits
The Tobii Eye Tracker 5 is a concrete consumer model for basic Windows interaction or experimentation. Its specification lists an IS5/custom 850 nm near-infrared sensor, 133 Hz gaze frequency, a 40° × 40° field of view, Windows 10/11 support, recommended 8 GB of RAM and a USB port.

Implementation checklists
For a controlled screen experiment
- Define the event you must resolve: fixation, dwell, pupil change, saccade or micro-saccade.
- Set the minimum sampling rate that captures that event; consider Spark for moderate timing and Spectrum when very fast events are central.
- Fix the participant-to-screen geometry and lighting, then run the manufacturer’s calibration procedure.
- Record calibration quality, display resolution, viewing distance, tracker position and any corrective lenses.
- Run a short validation block before the real task and repeat calibration if the participant’s posture or tracker position changes.
- Synchronize stimulus and eye data with the same clock or a documented trigger. Keep raw data and software-version records for reproducibility.
For a mobile or field study
- Choose a wearable model with a scene camera and synchronization method that match the other sensors in your protocol.
- Fit the glasses, check eyelid and frame clearance, and perform the required one-point, automatic or multi-point calibration.
- Walk, turn and perform representative tasks while checking for slippage, dropped frames and scene-camera obstruction.
- Budget battery time; Glasses 3 specifies 105 minutes of recorder operation.
- Decide whether processing can occur in the cloud. For Pupil Invisible, document consent, retention, export and access controls before recording.
- Mark events such as frame adjustment, calibration repeat, battery change and researcher intervention in the data.
For Windows eye-gaze access
- Confirm that the tracker appears on Microsoft’s supported Eye Control list, or test the unsupported combination with the intended Windows build before relying on it.
- Place the display and tracker so the user can maintain a comfortable head position; adjust pointer speed and dwell timing gradually.
- Configure the Windows on-screen keyboard and text-to-speech, or install OptiKey for symbol AAC, predictive typing, mouse functions or plugins.
- Create a pause or lockout gesture to prevent accidental activation during conversation or rest.
- Practice calibration and recovery with the user, including what to do after glasses move, lighting changes or the tracker disconnects.
Common failure modes and fixes
Gaze appears offset after the participant moves
Recheck head position and calibration, then validate again. Wearable systems may need a new calibration after frame movement; Glasses 3 includes slippage compensation, but compensation cannot correct every fit problem.
Pupil measurements fluctuate with lighting
Keep illumination and screen brightness consistent, avoid direct sunlight or reflective eyewear where possible, and log lighting changes. Dark- and bright-pupil methods depend on the relationship between infrared illumination, the eye and the camera.
The tracker records but Windows Eye Control does not respond
Check whether the exact model is on Microsoft’s supported list, confirm the Windows 10/11 build and USB connection, and test with the manufacturer’s current driver. A research stream or SDK connection alone does not prove Eye Control integration.

Pause deployment until your institution approves the data path. Verify where eye video and derived gaze are stored, who can access them, how long they remain available and how participants can exercise deletion or withdrawal rights.
High-speed data overwhelms the analysis pipeline
Reduce the acquisition rate to the lowest defensible setting, define a storage and backup plan, and separate real-time triggers from archival raw data. A 1,200 Hz mode is valuable only when the research question and analysis method use the additional temporal information.
