For PlayStation Pulse headphones, start with the PS5’s Standard EQ preset, create a personalized profile under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), and compare the result with the console’s five 3D audio presets. Choose Shooter EQ if you want more emphasis on footsteps and shots, or Bass Boost if you prefer stronger bass. There is no single best curve for every listener or game, so use these as starting points and judge them with the same game audio.
Which PS5 audio settings should I start with?
Use the PS5’s Standard EQ preset and try a personalized headphone 3D audio profile. Those settings provide a balanced baseline; change one at a time if you want more bass or clearer emphasis on particular sounds.
EQ changes the balance of sound frequencies, while 3D audio is a separate headphone feature. A preferred EQ preset does not determine which 3D audio profile will sound best to you, so compare those choices independently.

How do I set up Pulse headphones on PS5?
Connect the headset, check that the console is sending audio to it, and then choose your EQ and 3D audio settings. Menu labels and available controls may vary with the headset and PS5 system software.

- Check the output device. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset as the output device. Review Output to Headphones and Audio Format (Priority); available choices depend on the device and configuration.
- Choose an EQ preset. Press the PS button to open the Control Center, then select Sound > EQ Presets. Listen to the options before settling on one.
- Build a headphone 3D audio profile. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile, and follow the listening prompts. If you prefer the result, enable Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile. You can also compare the five preset profiles.
- Set comfortable listening levels. Adjust headphone volume and, if available, sidetone. Sidetone controls how loudly your own voice comes through the headset; this control is not available for every headset.
Listen to the same scene or passage when comparing profiles. Changing the game, volume, EQ, and 3D profile together makes it harder to tell which setting caused a difference.
What does each PS5 EQ preset do?
Choose according to the sound you want emphasized. PlayStation describes Standard as balancing low and high frequencies, Bass Boost as emphasizing bass, and Shooter as emphasizing shooting and footsteps.
| Preset | PlayStation’s described emphasis | Try it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Balanced low and high frequencies | You want a neutral starting point for general listening. |
| Bass Boost | More bass | You prefer stronger low-frequency sound. |
| Shooter | Shooting and footsteps | You want those sounds brought forward in a game. |
The console also provides custom audio modes with adjustable sliders and previews. Use those if the presets do not suit you: make a small change, preview it, and keep it only if it improves the sound for your own listening.

How should I choose a headphone 3D audio profile?
Compare the personalized profile with the five presets using content from a game you actually play. Keep the profile that gives you the clearest, most convincing spatial presentation; PlayStation does not identify one preset or profile as best for every listener.
Headphone 3D audio depends on game support. The PULSE 3D manual says the headset supports 3D audio on PS5 consoles if the game supports 3D audio, so a profile change will not add that feature to a game that lacks it.

What PULSE 3D headset controls should I check?
The PULSE 3D manual documents mic monitoring and separate CHAT/GAME balance controls. Mic monitoring lets you hear your own voice through the headset; CHAT/GAME balance adjusts the relative levels of chat and game audio.
The manual cautions that some games’ chat features may not work with the headset’s CHAT/GAME function. If that balance control does not behave as expected, check the game’s own chat settings and use its controls where needed.
Will these settings work with every Pulse or other headset?
PlayStation’s PS5 EQ instructions explicitly name the PULSE 3D among the headset families whose EQ can be adjusted. For other headset models, compatibility depends on the model and how it connects; check the manufacturer’s current compatibility guidance rather than assuming every wireless headset is supported.
PlayStation’s historical FAQ says compatible USB or analog stereo headsets can deliver 3D audio, while Bluetooth-only wireless headsets are unsupported. Because that FAQ is historical, verify a specific headset’s current compatibility before relying on it.
How can I tell whether a setting is helping?
Compare settings in a repeatable way rather than changing several controls at once. A short listening check helps separate preference from changes caused by different content or volume.

Does PS5 headphone EQ work with PULSE 3D?
Yes. PlayStation’s EQ instructions explicitly name PULSE 3D among the headset families whose EQ can be adjusted. The available controls can still depend on the connected device and console configuration.
Can I use PS5 3D audio with a game that does not support it?
The PULSE 3D manual conditions its PS5 3D audio support on the game supporting 3D audio. Changing the headset profile does not establish that a particular game has the feature.
Will my PS5 sound settings stay the same for every user or game?
The PlayStation instructions and PULSE 3D manual cited here do not establish how these settings behave across different console users or individual games. Check the settings on the user profile and in the game you are playing if the sound changes unexpectedly.
