One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a smoother PlayStation Portal session, start with the network: connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if possible, put the Portal on 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and use the Portal’s quick menu to check network status and adjust its maximum resolution. Sony recommends an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps, but that is guidance—not a guarantee of smooth play.
Set up the PS5 and Portal before troubleshooting the stream
A connection failure and a choppy stream are different problems. First confirm that the console is configured to accept Remote Play and, if you want to start from Rest Mode, that it can wake over the network.

- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Make sure the PS5 is online and signed in to the same account used on the Portal.
- To start Remote Play while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Install available system software updates on both devices. Sony’s support page identifies Portal software version 7.0.2 as including performance and stability improvements, but the retrieved page does not give a release date; check Sony’s current update page rather than assuming that version is still the latest. PlayStation Portal system software.
Prioritize a stable network path
Sony’s recommended setup is a wired internet connection for the PS5. If wiring the console to the router is practical, Ethernet removes the PS5’s Wi-Fi link from the connection path. If the PS5 has to use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network. These are setup recommendations, not a promise that one arrangement will fix every household’s connection.
- PS5: Connect it to the router with Ethernet when possible. If it must use Wi-Fi, use the same Wi-Fi network as the Portal.
- Portal: Connect on 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If the router’s band-steering feature keeps shifting the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Sony recommends disabling band steering if possible.
- Internet connection: PlayStation Support recommends at least 15 Mbps. Treat this as a general recommendation rather than a sufficient-speed threshold or guarantee; Sony also emphasizes connection stability, and the quality of public Wi-Fi may be outside your control.
If you need to wire the console, an Ethernet cable is the relevant accessory; it helps only when the PS5 can be connected to the router by cable. Sony does not specify a particular cable model.

- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Router menus differ, so consult the router’s own instructions to locate band steering or separate Wi-Fi bands. The goal is to keep the Portal on 5 GHz instead of letting the router move it between bands.
Choose a maximum resolution in the quick menu
During Remote Play, the Portal adjusts video quality automatically according to the internet connection. Its Max Resolution setting sets a ceiling; it does not force the stream to sustain that resolution. Sony lists two choices: 1080p High Quality and 1080p Standard.
- Try 1080p Standard if the stream stutters or becomes unstable.
- Try 1080p High Quality if the connection is stable and you prefer more image detail.
Compare the choices on the same network under similar conditions, and keep the one that works better for your session. Sony’s support material does not publish controlled tests showing that either option is universally smoother. The High Quality option was added in Portal system software version 7.0.0, according to Sony’s system software notes.

Check the connection while the problem is happening
Open the Portal’s quick menu during Remote Play and check its network status or troubleshooting tips. Sony’s documented quick-menu tools include network information; labels can vary with software version or activity. Checking during a stutter is more useful than relying only on a later impression of how the session felt.
- Open the quick menu while the stream is experiencing trouble.
- Review network status and any troubleshooting guidance shown there.
- If the stream remains unstable, test one change at a time—such as moving the Portal to 5 GHz, wiring the PS5, or lowering Max Resolution—so you can tell which change affects your connection.
Use comfort controls for comfort, not stream quality
The quick menu also includes Display Brightness. Controller settings let you adjust vibration and trigger-effect intensity. These options can make the Portal more comfortable to use, but Sony’s retrieved support material does not say they improve Remote Play smoothness.

If the Portal cannot connect to Wi-Fi
- Check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi network. If none can, the issue may be with the access point or internet service; Sony advises contacting the internet service provider when Wi-Fi fails across devices.
- Review the Portal’s Wi-Fi and access-point settings. If the problem continues and you can do so, try another Wi-Fi network to see whether the issue follows the Portal or stays with the original network.
- If many devices are connected to the access point, disconnect some and see whether the problem changes. Sony lists this as one possible Wi-Fi troubleshooting step, not a universal fix.
If the Portal connects but the stream stutters
- Check network status in the quick menu while the issue is occurring.
- Confirm that the PS5 is wired to the router if practical; otherwise, put the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm that the Portal is using 5 GHz and, if band steering is moving it between bands, consider disabling that router feature if possible.
- Try 1080p Standard as the maximum resolution, then compare it with High Quality under similar conditions.
If Remote Play will not start or wake the PS5
Recheck the PS5’s internet connection, account sign-in, and Enable Remote Play setting. If you are starting from Rest Mode, verify both network wake options under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.

If you are using public Wi-Fi
Public-network quality may be outside your control, and Sony notes that the Portal may not support some public-network connections, including certain 5 GHz networks, due to regional regulations. Availability depends on the network and region; do not assume that a public hotspot will work just because it uses 5 GHz. Check Sony’s current Remote Play setup guidance for compatibility information.
Optional audio connection
The Portal accepts wired headsets and earbuds with a 3.5 mm audio input. This is an audio option, not a remedy for connection stutter. Sony’s PS Portal quick-start guide covers the device’s connections and controls.
