For most people who already own a PS5, the PlayStation Portal Remote Player is the best handheld gaming choice. It is the only option here designed around your PS5 library, with built-in controls that support compatible DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. Choose a Steam Deck OLED if you want locally installed PC games and some offline play, or an ROG Xbox Ally X if you need a premium Windows handheld for several PC storefronts. A phone paired with a compatible controller is the lowest-cost way to try Remote Play. The crucial distinction is where the game runs: Portal Remote Play streams from your PS5, Portal cloud streaming uses an eligible PlayStation Plus Premium session, while the PC handhelds run their own Windows or SteamOS games. No option provides native offline PS5 games on the handheld itself.

Which handheld is best for PlayStation players?
Buy the PlayStation Portal Remote Player when your priority is playing games installed on your PS5 in another room or away from the television. It has the least complicated, officially supported control path: the integrated controls reproduce supported DualSense features, and Sony specifies an 8-inch 1080p LCD with up to 60 fps. It is a streaming accessory, not a separate console, so picture quality and responsiveness depend on the connection between the Portal, your home network and Sony’s service.
Choose the Steam Deck OLED when the games should run locally on the handheld. SteamOS, a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display, microSD expansion and Valve’s stated 3–12-hour gameplay range make it the clearest fit for a Steam library and supported offline play. PlayStation-published games available on Steam or Epic are separate PC purchases; owning a PS5 copy does not install that game on Steam Deck.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025, model RC73XA) only if you also want a high-end Windows PC handheld. ASUS lists Windows 11, a 7-inch 1920 × 1080 120 Hz display, an 80 Wh battery and microSD support. The 120 Hz panel does not make a PS5 stream run at 120 fps, and Sony’s Windows Remote Play instructions call for a connected DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4; the integrated controls are not automatically an officially guaranteed match.

The Logitech G CLOUD is a conditional choice for a multi-console household. Logitech markets a seven-inch Full HD device for PS5, PC and Xbox Remote Play plus other cloud services, but the checked US product page was unavailable. Stock can change, so verify availability before treating it as an option.
If you are unsure, use a phone first. Sony supports PS5 Remote Play on compatible Android and iOS devices, and the Backbone One PlayStation Edition adds physical controls. Select the USB-C or Lightning version that fits the specific phone; Sony’s Remote Play guidance notes that the official Android app supports the PlayStation Edition rather than other editions. Mobile data can be consumed quickly during streaming.
What is the difference between Portal Remote Play and Portal cloud streaming?
They are separate modes with different requirements. Remote Play sends a game from your own PS5, while cloud streaming sends an eligible PS5 game from Sony’s servers; the latter can work when your PS5 is off but requires PlayStation Plus Premium.
Remote Play: your PS5 runs the game
Your PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode, connected to broadband and running a compatible installed game. Compatible PS4 games installed on that PS5 can also be streamed. Ordinary Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus, although a game’s separate online-multiplayer entitlement may still apply. Sony’s Portal specifications and Remote Play guidance describe this as the standard PS5 connection.
Cloud streaming: Sony runs the game
Sony made non-beta PS5-game cloud streaming on Portal available on November 5, 2025, Pacific time. An adult account in a supported country needs PlayStation Plus Premium and can stream selected PS5 games from the Premium catalog or eligible owned digital PS5 games without connecting to a PS5. The desired title must be eligible at the time you play; owning a digital PS5 game alone does not guarantee cloud access. Check the current catalog and regional rules in Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming guidance.
The catalogs are not interchangeable
Portal cloud streaming does not provide PS3 or PS4 cloud titles. Remote Play can transmit a compatible PS4 game that is installed on your PS5. Games that depend on PlayStation VR, special peripherals or cloud streaming on the PS5 itself can be restricted in Remote Play, so a game’s compatibility matters more than its console generation.

Some older shopping copy says a PS5 is required for Portal, while Sony’s newer cloud-launch material describes eligible cloud sessions without a connected PS5. Read the older wording as a description of Remote Play, not as a prohibition on the separate Premium cloud mode.

Steam Deck OLED: the local-game option
Valve lists SteamOS, a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display, a 50 Wh battery and a 3–12-hour gameplay range that varies with use. Games are installed on the device or a compatible microSD card, so supported titles can work without an internet connection. That local model is the reason to choose it over Portal, not a way to install games purchased for your PS5.
Sony lists selected PlayStation games sold on Steam and Epic, but those are PC editions acquired separately. Sony does not list SteamOS for its official PS Remote Play app. Unofficial workarounds may exist, but their setup and reliability are not established here; do not buy a Deck assuming an officially supported PS5-to-Deck path.
ROG Xbox Ally X: Windows flexibility with a premium specification
The RC73XA model runs Windows 11 and has a 7-inch 1920 × 1080 display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, an 80 Wh battery and microSD expansion. Windows allows access to PC storefronts and applications beyond SteamOS, but that flexibility also brings a desktop operating system rather than a console-like PlayStation interface.
Sony supports PS Remote Play on Windows. Its published setup specifies a connected DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 controller, so verify the controller arrangement you intend to use. A 120 Hz screen can refresh at 120 Hz; it cannot turn a streamed PS5 session into a guaranteed 120-fps feed.

Logitech positions its seven-inch Full HD handheld for PS5, PC and Xbox Remote Play and for other cloud services. That breadth can suit a household that changes ecosystems, but vendor positioning does not establish identical behavior for Sony’s app with every integrated control. The US Logitech page checked for this article showed the product unavailable, so check current stock rather than relying on that status indefinitely.

Phone plus controller: the lowest-commitment route
A compatible Android phone or iPhone can run Sony’s Remote Play app, and a Backbone One PlayStation Edition supplies physical controls. Match the connector to the phone: USB-C and Lightning versions are different products. A phone is convenient for testing the network and deciding whether streaming fits your routine, but it shares battery, notifications and mobile-data limits with the rest of the device.
Is Portal worth it if you just bought a PS5?
For a new PS5 owner who wants to continue the same games away from the television, yes—Portal is the most direct purchase. It uses the PS5 games already in your library, keeps the DualSense-style control layout and avoids buying a second PC edition. The trade-off is that every session is a stream: the PS5 must handle Remote Play, or Premium and an eligible title must handle cloud streaming.
- Choose Portal now if your PS5 is your main gaming system, your home Wi-Fi is reliable and you mainly need a second screen.
- Choose Steam Deck OLED if offline play, Steam ownership and local installation matter more than carrying PS5 purchases over.
- Choose Ally X if you want Windows software and several PC storefronts in addition to occasional PlayStation streaming.
- Choose a phone controller if you want to validate Remote Play before spending on dedicated hardware.
- Choose G CLOUD conditionally if its multi-service streaming focus fits your household and current US stock is confirmed.
What internet connection and subscription do you need?
Portal’s network requirement depends on the mode and quality setting. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum to establish Portal cloud streaming, 13 Mbps as the minimum for its 1080p cloud mode and at least 15 Mbps as a general Portal recommendation for a better experience. Sony’s broader cloud page separately lists 23 Mbps as a recommended 1080p connection; that is a recommendation, not the Portal-specific 13 Mbps minimum.

These figures describe connection speed, not guaranteed latency or frame rate. Wi-Fi interference, router placement, household traffic and the behavior of the game can change the result. Portal’s Remote Play mode also depends on the PS5’s broadband connection and the handheld’s route to it.
Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus. Cloud streaming does require Premium, and only adult accounts in supported regions can use the eligible Portal cloud mode. Catalog availability changes by country and over time, so do not subscribe solely for one game until its current cloud eligibility is confirmed.
How do I set up PS5 Remote Play on Portal?
Prepare a PS5 with the latest system software, a broadband connection and the game installed. Keep the PS5 near a stable network connection, and use Rest Mode only after enabling the settings that allow the console to wake for Remote Play.

- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network if you want Portal to wake the console.
- Sign in on the PS5 and Portal with the same PlayStation Network account. Put the PS5 in Rest Mode or leave it running.
- On Portal, select the PS5 shown on the connection screen. If more than one console is associated with the account, choose the one containing the game.
- Start a compatible installed game. If the connection is unstable, move the PS5 to wired Ethernet or improve the Wi-Fi path before changing display settings.
Sony’s Remote Play requirements cover supported mobile devices and controller details as well. A game that needs VR hardware, a special peripheral or cloud streaming on the PS5 may not be playable through Remote Play.

- Confirm that the account is an adult account in a country where Portal cloud streaming is supported.
- Subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium if the account does not already have it.
- Open the Portal cloud-streaming area and search for the specific PS5 game. Verify that it is listed as streamable; a digital purchase alone is not enough.
- Connect Portal to a network meeting Sony’s speed guidance. The PS5 can be off because this mode does not depend on an active Remote Play connection.
- Start the session and select the available quality option. Sony began a global rollout on March 18, 2026, for a 1080p High Quality mode that uses a higher bitrate than the standard 1080p setting; availability can depend on rollout status and service conditions.
Sony reported that Portal cloud-streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year for January in data covering December 2025 to January 2026, and that more than half of Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. The practical rule is simple: Portal follows the PS5 library through streaming, while PC handhelds follow PC storefront licenses. Check the edition before buying a second copy.

Which accessories are actually useful?
Keep accessories secondary to the streaming decision. Wired 3.5 mm headphones work with Portal, while PULSE Explore earbuds use PlayStation Link. Sony also sells a PlayStation Portal Remote Player accessory bundle through its store; confirm the contents with the merchant because bundles can change. For Steam Deck OLED or Ally X, a compatible microSD card expands the documented storage path, but it cannot turn Portal into an installable game console.

Do I need to buy my PS5 games again for Steam Deck?
Usually, yes. A SteamOS handheld uses the PC edition sold through a PC storefront; a PS5 license is not automatically a Steam entitlement. Only games you separately own on a supported PC storefront can be installed locally.
Can I use PlayStation Portal on hotel or public Wi-Fi?
It may work when the network permits the required connection and provides enough sustained bandwidth, but captive portals, blocked traffic and congested Wi-Fi can prevent or degrade streaming. Test the network before relying on it for travel.
Does Portal cloud streaming include every game in the Premium catalog?
