Topaz Photo is the strongest choice for high-quality prints, Photoshop is best when an AI pass must be corrected by hand, VanceAI suits affordable batch repair, Remini is the quickest phone option for portraits, and Palette.fm is the specialist pick for colorization. Hotpot.ai is useful for trying a single restoration free, while Lets Enhance fits repeatable print workflows. The right choice depends on the damage, the amount of manual control you need, and whether the result is for a phone, a small reprint, a wall-sized print, or archival storage.

Quick comparison

Tool Best fit What it handles well Main limitation Platforms and workflow
Topaz Photo High-quality restoration and large prints Blur, dust, damage, sharpening, colorization and upscaling Paid plans; less suited to detailed hand painting than Photoshop Desktop workflow with strong automated processing
Photoshop with the Photo Restoration Neural Filter Important images needing human correction AI enhancement, faces and scratches followed by layers, masks and pixel editing Steeper learning curve and recurring subscription Desktop, layer-based manual control
VanceAI Photo Restorer Budget batch repair Automatic restoration and colorization across a family-photo backlog Credits can make large batches costlier than the entry price Browser-based, streamlined workflow
Remini Fast portrait enhancement on a phone Face sharpening and one-tap cleanup May invent plausible facial detail Mobile-first
Lets Enhance Repeatable print and resale output Restoration plus upscaling with batch-friendly presets Credit system and less manual control Online service
Palette.fm Colorizing an already-clean black-and-white photo Dedicated colorization with style choices Does not replace scratch, tear or stain repair Colorization-focused online workflow
Hotpot.ai One-off testing or a single image Free preview before paying for a final file Full-resolution and commercial output consume credits Browser-based
Fotor or Picsart Restoration that immediately becomes a design Basic restoration alongside cards, posters and social graphics Broader suites are less specialized for severe archival damage Web and mobile editing ecosystems
Luminar Neo or DxO PureRAW Photographers beginning with RAW cleanup Noise reduction, detail recovery and modern-camera processing Adjacent tools, not dedicated physical-damage restorers Desktop photography workflows

These are use-case recommendations rather than results from a controlled benchmark. The dated prices below come from product pages or Dupple’s September 2026 comparison and can change by country, billing term and plan.

Choose by the problem you need to solve

For scratches, tears, dust and stains

Start with Topaz Photo for an automated pass that addresses blur, dust, physical damage, sharpening and overall quality. Photoshop is the better destination when a tear crosses an eye, a hand or an important object: its Neural Filter can make a first pass, then layers, masks, cloning and healing let you decide exactly which pixels remain.

For soft or damaged faces

Remini is the fastest option for a handful of phone portraits. Its convenience comes with the greatest risk of an altered identity, so compare the result with the original and avoid treating newly generated eyes, teeth or skin texture as recovered evidence. For valuable family records, use Topaz or Photoshop and retain the unedited scan.

For a box of family photographs

VanceAI’s dedicated restorer and colorizer favor a single automatic workflow and batch volume. It is a practical budget starting point, but count the credits required for every image rather than assuming the advertised monthly entry price covers the entire box.

For colorizing black-and-white images

Palette.fm is purpose-built for colorization. Use it after physical damage has been repaired; it is not a substitute for removing scratches, tears or stains. Its styles are interpretations, not proof of the exact colors originally used.

For printing or resale

Lets Enhance combines restoration and upscaling with presets intended to keep a series consistent. Topaz Photo offers more control for a demanding wall print. Decide the final dimensions before processing so you can judge whether the exported resolution is sufficient.

For a free trial on one image

Hotpot.ai provides a free preview. Credits are required for full-resolution or commercial output, and the final charge depends on the image and settings rather than a single published restoration price.

Why the original scan matters more than the software

Topaz Labs advises scanning or photographing the print at the highest resolution available before restoration. A sharp, evenly lit scan gives an algorithm real edges and grain to work with; a small, blurred phone copy forces it to guess.

  1. Scan the print, or photograph it square-on in diffuse light, at the highest practical optical resolution.
  2. Save the untouched scan as a master file. Never overwrite it.
  3. Work on a duplicate and keep notes about the tool, settings and date.
  4. Crop or straighten only on the working copy so the full original remains available.

AI restoration reconstructs missing information

Restoration software can remove a visible mark or rebuild a plausible texture, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured. On a badly damaged face or a blank section of paper, the output may be a convincing reconstruction rather than the exact original.

  • Zoom into eyes, mouths, jewelry, lettering and repeated patterns after every pass.
  • Compare the restored image beside the scan, not just the enlarged result by itself.
  • Reduce the strength of a filter when it smooths skin or repeats an artificial texture.
  • For historical, legal or genealogical records, label generated areas and preserve the unaltered scan.

Manual control: when Photoshop earns its place

Dupple describes Photoshop’s Photo Restoration Neural Filter as an AI first pass with controls for enhancement, facial enhancement and scratch reduction. The decisive advantage is what follows: layer masks, healing and cloning, adjustment layers and compositing let you correct one area without changing the rest.

Adobe says Firefly can repair physical damage, revive faded color and recover cracked portraits with Generative Fill, and describes the feature as usable without manual retouching skills. Free accounts receive daily generations; paid plans support higher-volume use. Firefly is therefore a convenient starting point, while Photoshop or Adobe Express provides a path to finish the image and build a card, poster or other design.

Special cases for photographers

Luminar Neo

Digital Camera World reports that Luminar Neo’s 2026 updates added old-photo restoration and colorization tools. It can make sense if you already use Luminar for general photo editing, but a severely torn archival print may still need Photoshop’s pixel-level work.

DxO PureRAW 5

DxO PureRAW 5 is aimed at noise reduction and detail recovery in RAW workflows. It is useful when the job starts with a modern camera file or a noisy scan, not when you need to reconstruct missing sections of a paper print.

A reliable restoration workflow

  1. Capture: make the highest-resolution scan or photograph you can.
  2. Preserve: store the original scan separately and duplicate it for editing.
  3. Diagnose: identify the dominant defect—physical damage, facial softness, fading, colorization or insufficient output size.
  4. Start gently: run the least aggressive AI setting first.
  5. Inspect: check faces, lettering, edges and repeated textures at 100% and at the intended print size.
  6. Correct: move to Photoshop or another layer-based editor when the result needs painting, masking or compositing.
  7. Export twice: keep a high-quality archival master and make a separate sharing or print copy.

Bottom-line recommendations

  • Best overall for demanding prints: Topaz Photo.
  • Best for maximum control: Photoshop, optionally starting with Firefly or the Photo Restoration Neural Filter.
  • Best budget batch option: VanceAI Photo Restorer, after checking credit limits.
  • Best mobile portrait shortcut: Remini, with careful identity checks.
  • Best colorization specialist: Palette.fm.
  • Best single-image free preview: Hotpot.ai.
  • Best for consistent print batches: Lets Enhance.
