There is no universal “best” preset for a 3D metroidvania. The smoothest result comes from a repeatable process: verify the game’s requirements, establish a baseline, then change one setting at a time while watching frame consistency and image quality. Start with resolution or resolution scaling when delivery is poor, reduce costly options such as high anti-aliasing selectively, and match V-Sync and frame limits to your display. Keep the setting that gives the clearest image without unstable motion.

Your CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, storage, monitor refresh rate and the game’s own engine all affect the outcome. Published minimum and recommended specifications are useful starting points, but they do not promise a particular frame rate. The method below works across 3D metroidvanias while showing how to handle a game-specific case such as Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Is there one best graphics preset for every 3D metroidvania?

No. Two computers running at the same resolution can produce different frame pacing and frame rates, and a system that meets a store page’s requirements is not guaranteed to deliver high FPS. Treat presets as a starting point, not a verdict.

Metroidvanias often combine scrolling exploration, large rooms, particle effects, volumetric lighting and rapid camera movement. A setting that is cheap in one game can be expensive in another. The practical target is consistent frame delivery during ordinary traversal, combat, map transitions and busy effects—not the highest number shown in a menu.

Use two measures, not one

  • Frame consistency: look for even motion and an absence of obvious stutter when panning, jumping or entering a new area.
  • Image quality: check fine platforms, foliage, wires, diagonal edges and distant objects for shimmer, blur or jagged outlines.

When a change improves one measure but harms the other, keep the compromise that feels better during play. Do not assume a single slider always has the largest impact; game engines and hardware differ.

What should I check before changing graphics settings?

Compare your complete system with the exact game listing before tuning. Steam says each title’s Store page lists requirements and warns that meeting them does not guarantee high FPS or strong performance.

Record the relevant parts of your system

  • Processor model and core configuration.
  • Graphics card model and available video memory.
  • Installed system memory.
  • Operating-system edition and whether it is 64-bit when the game requires it.
  • Installation drive and available free space.
  • Monitor resolution and refresh rate.

Use the game’s own requirements as a baseline for compatibility. A “recommended” label is not a promise that every scene will remain at your preferred frame rate, and a “minimum” label may describe only the ability to launch and play with reduced settings.

Close variables that can mask a graphics problem

Before testing, close unnecessary launchers, browsers with many tabs, recording tools and overlays. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance identifies background applications, available memory, outdated drivers and hardware configuration as common factors in poor performance. Change one category at a time so you can identify the cause rather than guessing.

How do I create a reliable baseline?

A short, repeatable test is more useful than changing every option at once. Save a profile or write down each value so you can undo a change.

  1. Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate. In your operating system’s display settings, select the refresh rate you actually want to use. Confirm the game is running on the correct display.
  2. Choose the game’s native output resolution. Start with the panel’s native resolution and the default quality preset, unless the game is already visibly struggling.
  3. Pick a repeatable route. Use the same room, combat encounter or camera sweep for every comparison. Include a busy area rather than testing only an empty hallway.
  4. Play long enough to expose spikes. A setting that looks fine for ten seconds may stutter during loading, particles or a fast transition. Note both average smoothness and sudden hitches.
  5. Change one option. Apply the change, repeat the route and compare motion and clarity. Keep it only if the trade-off is worthwhile.

If the game provides a built-in frame-time graph, use it alongside the counter. A fluctuating frame time can feel uneven even when an average FPS number appears acceptable.

Should I lower resolution or use resolution scaling first?

When frame delivery is poor, reduce render resolution or resolution scaling before sacrificing every other visual feature. Steam notes that increasing resolution or video options can reduce FPS; the same relationship makes resolution a direct lever for reducing GPU work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output resolution versus render resolution

Output resolution is the signal sent to the display. Render resolution is the internal image the game creates before it is scaled to that output. Some games expose a percentage slider, dynamic resolution, or an upscaler; others offer only fixed resolutions. Test the smallest change that produces steadier motion, then inspect thin lines and text for softness.

How to test an upscaler or scale slider

  1. Keep the display output at its native resolution if the game allows it.
  2. Lower the internal scale by a small step rather than jumping immediately to the lowest value.
  3. Walk through a detailed area and rotate the camera slowly and quickly.
  4. Check distant platforms, animated effects and small interface text.
  5. Stop lowering the scale when additional performance is no longer worth the loss of clarity.

Nixxes describes upscaling and dynamic-resolution behavior as game-dependent. The available methods, names and reconstruction quality therefore vary; do not assume that one mode will look or perform identically in another title.

Which visual settings should I lower, and in what order?

Lower expensive options selectively. Keep features that define the game’s art direction when their cost is modest, and reduce settings that create little visible benefit during movement. There is no guaranteed universal order, but the following comparisons help you decide.

Setting or choice What it changes How to tune it
Render resolution or scale Internal pixel workload and image clarity Reduce in small steps when the GPU is overloaded; inspect text and fine edges after every change.
Anti-aliasing Jagged edges and shimmering on diagonals Try a lower sampling level or disable it temporarily. AMD notes that higher sampling quality costs performance; keep the highest level that visibly helps.
Shadows Shadow resolution, distance and softness Lower one level if scenes with many lights cause drops. Compare contact areas and platform readability.
Effects or particles Smoke, sparks, magic and other transient effects Reduce when combat or environmental effects produce spikes; verify that important attacks remain readable.
Reflections, ambient occlusion or volumetric effects Depth cues and lighting complexity Lower only if the game exposes the option and the visual gain is minor for your play style. Test a representative room.
Texture quality Surface detail and video-memory use Lower if you see texture pop-in, hitching or memory pressure. If motion is smooth and memory is sufficient, this may be worth preserving.

Why anti-aliasing deserves its own test

Anti-aliasing smooths stair-stepped edges. AMD’s graphics-setting guidance explains that higher sampling quality increases the performance cost. In a side-scrolling or isometric view, you may notice the difference most on sloped platforms, chains and thin foliage. Compare a lower level during movement, not only in a still screenshot; shimmering can be more distracting than a small reduction in smoothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not lower everything automatically

A “low” preset can reduce several settings that have little effect on your bottleneck while making the scene unnecessarily flat. If only combat effects cause drops, lower effects rather than textures. If the GPU is busy throughout a room, resolution scaling may be a more direct fix. If the GPU is underused while the frame rate remains low, investigate CPU load, background processes or a game-specific limit instead of blindly reducing image quality.

How should I configure V-Sync, refresh rate and frame limits?

Refresh rate determines how often the display can present a new image. V-Sync synchronizes frame delivery to that display and can prevent tearing. The best combination depends on the game, monitor and graphics driver, so test the game’s own controls first.

A practical sequence

  1. Confirm the operating system is set to the monitor’s intended refresh rate.
  2. Use the game’s V-Sync option and play the same test route.
  3. If tearing appears, enable V-Sync and check whether motion becomes clean.
  4. If input feels delayed or frame pacing is uneven, try the game’s alternative synchronization mode or a frame limit that your system can sustain consistently.
  5. Only after testing in-game controls, inspect graphics-driver overrides. A driver profile can replace or conflict with the game’s choice.

Do not expect a higher refresh-rate monitor to make the PC render more frames. It can present frames more frequently when the computer supplies them, but the rendered frame rate still depends on the game and hardware.

Why a frame limit can feel smoother

An unlimited setting can make the GPU run at full load, then fluctuate as scenes change. A cap that the system can hold steadily may produce more even frame times and lower heat or fan noise. Choose a limit based on observed behavior rather than a universal number; the sustainable value differs by game and configuration.

What if performance is unexpectedly poor?

Work through software and hardware variables before assuming the game needs a new graphics card.

Quick recovery checklist

  • Exit unnecessary background applications and overlays.
  • Check that enough system memory remains available.
  • Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer, then restart the computer.
  • Verify that the game is using the intended GPU on systems with integrated and discrete graphics.
  • Return to the baseline profile and change one setting at a time.
  • Check for a game update or a known issue in the developer’s support documentation.

Steam lists unnecessary background programs, memory availability, drivers and hardware configuration among general performance considerations. These checks are especially important when a game that previously ran well suddenly stutters.

Diagnose the type of limitation

  • GPU-limited behavior: lowering render scale or demanding effects improves the test route.
  • CPU-limited behavior: visual reductions make little difference, while busy scenes or many entities still cause drops.
  • Memory or streaming behavior: hitching appears during area transitions, textures pop in, or closing other applications helps.
  • Synchronization behavior: the counter looks adequate but motion tears, judders or feels delayed; test V-Sync, refresh rate and frame limits.

These labels are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. A game can move between limits from one room to another.

Silksong-specific V-Sync troubleshooting

Team Cherry’s official support page identifies a title-specific issue in which NVIDIA Control Panel’s Fast V-Sync option may cause cutscene problems. If that occurs in Silksong, try Vertical sync On, Off or Adaptive instead. This advice applies to that support case; it should not be treated as a universal fix for other games.

How do I choose between image detail and frame stability?

Use a decision framework instead of chasing a preset label.

Your observation First experiment Keep the change when
Motion is generally slow or the GPU is saturated Lower render scale slightly Camera movement becomes steadier and text remains readable.
Edges shimmer or look jagged Test anti-aliasing levels A lower level removes enough shimmer without an unacceptable performance loss.
Only effects-heavy fights dip Reduce effects or particles Combat remains legible and frame delivery improves during those effects.
Image tears across horizontal lines Test in-game V-Sync and verify refresh rate Tearing disappears without objectionable latency or judder.
Stutters continue after visual reductions Close background apps, check memory and update drivers The same route no longer produces transition or hitching spikes.

Keep a written record of the winning values. If a later driver update or game patch changes behavior, you can return to the known baseline and retest only the affected option.

Should I buy a variable-refresh-rate monitor for smoother gameplay?

A variable-refresh-rate monitor can make a fluctuating frame rate appear smoother by adapting presentation timing, but it does not increase the number of frames your PC renders. Consider one only after confirming that your system’s sustained frame rate and the monitor’s supported range suit the games you play. The monitor’s refresh behavior, the game’s synchronization support and the graphics driver must work together; a new display cannot compensate for a CPU or GPU bottleneck.

How often should I retune settings?

Retune after a major game update, graphics-driver change, operating-system change or hardware upgrade. Keep separate profiles for different resolutions or displays when the game supports them. A setting that was ideal in an early area may need adjustment in a later zone with denser effects, so test more than one representative location before declaring a profile finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

What FPS should I target in a 3D metroidvania?

Use the frame rate your PC can sustain consistently at your monitor’s refresh rate rather than chasing a universal target. A stable, even presentation is usually preferable to a higher counter that fluctuates during combat or transitions.

Does lowering texture quality always improve FPS?

No. Texture quality primarily affects surface detail and video-memory use. If your limitation is rendering resolution, effects, CPU work or background activity, lowering textures may change image quality without fixing the underlying stutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my game stutter when the FPS counter looks high?

An average counter can hide uneven frame times, streaming hitches or synchronization problems. Test a repeatable route, watch frame-time behavior if the game exposes it, and check background memory use, drivers, refresh rate and V-Sync.

Can I use the same settings on a laptop and desktop with the same GPU model?

Not reliably. Laptop power limits, cooling, processor configuration, memory and driver profiles can differ from desktop versions, so compare actual behavior on each machine and tune from a separate baseline.
