For most Windows PC gamers, Steam is the best PC game launcher of 2026 because it combines the broadest general-purpose ecosystem with strong library, controller, cloud, community, and mod features. Xbox PC Game Pass is the best value, GOG is best for DRM-free ownership, Epic is best for free games, and Playnite is best for unifying separate libraries.

Those recommendations solve different problems. Steam, GOG, Epic, and the Xbox PC app are primarily storefront or subscription clients, while Playnite is a library manager. Installing Playnite can make several storefronts easier to use, but Playnite does not merge licenses, remove DRM, or guarantee that Steam, Epic, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or another original client will not open in the background.

Key takeaways

  • Steam is the best overall PC game launcher for most players because its catalog, community tools, mod ecosystem, cloud features, controller support, and hardware integration are unusually mature.
  • PC Game Pass is listed at $13.99 per month in the United States at the current research snapshot and is best for players who prefer subscription access to buying every game.
  • GOG Galaxy is the strongest choice for DRM-free installers where available, classic games, and optional library aggregation.
  • Epic Games Store is worth keeping for free-game promotions, Epic-published releases, selected exclusives, and discounts, but it does not become the owner of games purchased elsewhere.
  • Playnite is the best unified library front end, but the original storefront or publisher client may still be required for authentication, updates, DRM, achievements, or multiplayer.

How we chose the best PC game launchers of 2026

These rankings compare launchers by catalog and availability, ownership model, client quality, features, price and value, compatibility, and interoperability. The comparison also separates three categories that are often incorrectly treated as interchangeable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Storefront clients: Steam, GOG Galaxy, and Epic Games Store let you browse, buy, install, and update games.
  • Subscription and storefront clients: The Xbox PC app provides access to PC Game Pass and Xbox PC games.
  • Library managers: Playnite and some GOG Galaxy features organize games obtained from several services without replacing those services.

A launcher can authenticate an account, sell games, install patches, synchronize saves, display achievements, provide social features, manage mods, or perform license checks. No launcher performs all of those jobs equally well, and a game can require an additional publisher account even when the game was purchased through Steam.

Quick comparison: which PC game launcher is best for you?

Rank Launcher Best for Type Ownership or access Main advantage Main drawback
1 Steam Best overall Storefront client Usually individual purchases Broad ecosystem with mature community, mod, cloud, controller, and remote-play features Some games use Steam DRM or require another publisher launcher
2 Xbox PC app / PC Game Pass Best subscription value Subscription and storefront client Subscription access; selected games can also be purchased Day-one games, EA Play access, and member discounts on the listed PC Game Pass plan Catalog churn, regional differences, and third-party-launcher exceptions
3 GOG Galaxy Best ownership model Storefront client and optional aggregator Individual purchases; DRM-free installers where supported Offline installers, classic games, and a less client-dependent ownership model Catalog is smaller and DRM-free does not guarantee modern online functionality
4 Epic Games Store Best free-game strategy Storefront client Individual purchases and claimed promotions Free-game promotions, Epic releases, selected exclusives, and discounts Imported games remain tied to their original stores; it is less useful as a universal library
5 Playnite Best unified library Library manager and front end Does not sell or transfer ownership One interface for games from multiple stores, local folders, and emulators Underlying clients may still be needed for launch, updates, DRM, or online features

Short version: Start with Steam if you are new to PC gaming. Add PC Game Pass if you play many games, GOG if DRM-free ownership matters, Epic for its promotions, or Playnite if multiple libraries have become difficult to manage.

1. Steam — What makes it the best overall PC game launcher?

Steam is the best overall PC game launcher because it offers the most balanced combination of catalog breadth, library management, community features, mod support, cloud features, controller support, remote play, and compatibility with gaming PCs and handheld-focused interfaces. Steam is the safest default rather than a perfect solution: individual games can still impose publisher accounts, third-party launchers, anti-cheat systems, or their own DRM.

Steam’s strongest advantages include:

  • Large, varied ecosystem: Steam covers major releases, indies, early-access projects, free-to-play games, niche genres, older titles, and software.
  • Library tools: Collections, filtering, search, installation management, playtime information, and game-specific community pages make a large library relatively manageable.
  • Mod support: Steam Workshop provides an integrated way to discover and install mods for supported games. Workshop support is not universal, and complex mod lists may still need a separate mod manager.
  • Community infrastructure: Reviews, forums, guides, screenshots, broadcasts, and user discussions can help a player evaluate or troubleshoot a game.
  • Cloud and remote features: Steam supports cloud saves for supported games and features such as Remote Play and Steam Link. Support remains game-specific, so cloud synchronization should not be treated as a universal backup.
  • Controller and living-room support: Big Picture mode, broad controller compatibility, and Steam’s hardware ecosystem make Steam a practical choice for couch gaming and handheld-style use.

Steam’s main weakness is that buying a game through Steam does not always mean Steam is the only software involved. An EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, or other publisher client may launch after Steam, and a game may require a separate account or online check. Steam ownership also should not be described as DRM-free or as a guarantee of indefinite offline access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Steam as your default if you want one general-purpose store, play mod-heavy games, value community troubleshooting, or expect to use a controller, handheld PC, or remote-play setup. Check the individual game’s requirements before assuming that Steam’s own client handles every part of the experience. Steam’s official product overview is available on the Steam about page.

2. Xbox PC app — Is PC Game Pass the best value?

PC Game Pass is the best value for players who sample many games, want access to a rotating catalog, or prefer Microsoft releases and day-one availability over permanent ownership. The Xbox PC app is the Windows client; PC Game Pass is the subscription service accessed through that client.

Microsoft’s United States PC Game Pass listing showed $13.99 per month at the research snapshot. The same official listing describes day-one games, EA Play access, and member discounts on selected games. The price, promotions, plan benefits, catalog, and availability can change by country and date, so treat the price as US information rather than a worldwide rate. See the current PC Game Pass listing before subscribing.

PC Game Pass strength What it means in practice
Access instead of individual purchases You can try many included games without buying each title separately while the subscription and catalog eligibility continue.
Day-one releases Microsoft advertises day-one games on the current PC Game Pass page, but the exact titles and plan terms remain time- and region-dependent.
EA Play access The listed plan includes EA Play access, subject to the applicable catalog and platform conditions.
Discounts Members receive discounts on selected games, but a discount does not turn subscription access into ownership.
Catalog changes A game can leave PC Game Pass, and access can end when the subscription expires or when a title is removed.

The central trade-off is simple: PC Game Pass rents access while Steam and GOG generally sell individual licenses. PC Game Pass is a strong choice for someone who plays a wide range of games for a few weeks or months. Buying a favorite game can be better for someone who plays one or two titles for years and wants permanent access to a specific purchase.

Xbox also presents Xbox, Game Pass, installed games, and games from other PC storefronts in a combined library interface on its Xbox on PC page. That feature is an aggregation and discovery layer, not proof that every external game has been transferred into the Xbox license system. Some PC games requiring third-party launchers or Battle.net are excluded from specified Game Pass rewards or access conditions, and individual games can require separate publisher accounts.

The current Xbox PC app requirements include Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display. Individual games require additional hardware, storage, and operating-system capabilities, and Windows S mode may need to be disabled. Confirm the current requirements on the Xbox PC app requirements page.

3. GOG Galaxy — Is GOG the best alternative to Steam for ownership?

GOG is the best choice for players who prioritize DRM-free ownership where available, offline installers, classic PC games, and the ability to retain a usable installation outside a constantly running storefront client. GOG.com is the store and ownership ecosystem; GOG Galaxy is the optional desktop client.

GOG’s ownership model is the reason to choose it, not the expectation that every game will behave identically without restrictions. Many GOG purchases provide DRM-free offline installers, but online multiplayer can still depend on servers, an older game can have compatibility problems, and game-specific technology can impose limitations. DRM-free also does not guarantee future support for online services, modern operating systems, or every mod.

GOG Galaxy is useful when you want a client for installation, updates, cloud saves where supported, achievements, and social features. GOG’s developer documentation identifies Galaxy features including cloud saves and user chat. Cloud saves remain game- and platform-specific, so keep manual backups of important saves before changing installations or adding mods.

Galaxy can also aggregate libraries from other services. That makes Galaxy more convenient for discovery, but an imported game remains governed by the store where the game was purchased. GOG Galaxy does not convert a Steam license into a GOG license, and an external game may still need its original client for authentication, installation, updates, achievements, or multiplayer.

Choose GOG when you value Do not assume
Offline installers and DRM-free releases where supported Every GOG game has identical offline, multiplayer, or compatibility behavior
Classic games and older PC releases Every older game will work perfectly on every current Windows configuration
Optional use of the Galaxy client Galaxy eliminates all account, update, or online-service requirements
One view of several libraries Library aggregation merges ownership or removes the original launcher

Choose GOG instead of Steam when ownership resilience and offline access matter more than the broadest ecosystem. Many PC gamers will reasonably use both: Steam for its community and mod infrastructure, and GOG for titles where DRM-free installers are the deciding factor. Browse the current GOG store for the release-specific ownership terms.

4. Epic Games Store — Why is Epic worth installing?

Epic Games Store is worth installing as a secondary launcher for free-game promotions, Epic-published releases, selected exclusives, and occasional discounts. Epic is less compelling as a universal replacement for Steam when your existing collection is spread across several storefronts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Epic’s best reasons to exist on a Windows gaming PC are:

  • Free-game claims: Promotions can add games to an Epic account without requiring a conventional purchase price at the time of the claim. Promotion schedules and available titles change, so verify the current offer in the Epic Games Store.
  • Epic-published games: Some Epic releases and platform-focused experiences make the Epic client necessary or especially convenient.
  • Selected exclusives: Exclusivity is title- and time-specific. A game’s availability can change, so do not treat every Epic release as permanently exclusive.
  • Discounts and account features: Epic periodically runs discounts and promotions, while individual games can provide their own cloud-save or cross-platform features.

The most important limitation is ownership fragmentation. Epic’s support documentation says that games purchased through Steam, Origin, or Ubisoft Connect cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher merely because Epic is installed. In other words, adding a shortcut or seeing a title in a library view does not transfer the license. Epic’s explanation of this limitation is available in Epic Games’ launcher support documentation.

Epic is therefore a sensible “keep it installed” client rather than the automatic first choice for every game. Use Epic when a free promotion, Epic account feature, price, or specific release gives you a reason to use it. Use Steam or Playnite as the daily library front end if most of your collection lives elsewhere.

5. Playnite — Can it really combine all your PC game launchers?

Playnite is the best unified library manager for players who own games across Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox, publisher clients, local folders, emulators, or other supported integrations. Playnite is not a storefront and does not merge licenses; Playnite presents games in one interface and hands launch, authentication, or other responsibilities back to the original software when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playnite is particularly useful for:

  • Replacing a desktop full of separate shortcuts with one searchable library.
  • Using a full-screen interface for couch gaming and controller navigation.
  • Organizing games from several stores alongside locally installed games.
  • Managing a Windows handheld PC where switching between storefront clients is inconvenient.
  • Including emulators and non-store games in the same front end.

The practical limitation is that a unified view is not a unified technical stack. Playnite may still invoke Steam, Epic, GOG, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, or another client. The original service can remain necessary for ownership authentication, updates, DRM, achievements, anti-cheat, cloud saves, or multiplayer. Imported metadata, playtime, achievements, and launch behavior can also vary by integration and by game.

Playnite requires more setup and maintenance than simply installing one store client. Integrations may need account authorization, metadata may need correction, and a launcher update can affect how an imported game starts. Those trade-offs are worthwhile for a fragmented collection but unnecessary if almost all games are already in Steam. Download Playnite from the official Playnite project page.

Which publisher launchers might you still need?

Even the five recommendations above do not remove the need for publisher-specific clients. A publisher launcher usually has a narrower catalog but may be mandatory for a publisher’s own games, account services, anti-cheat, updates, or cross-platform progression.

Launcher Why you may need it Why it is not a general-purpose winner
Battle.net Blizzard and selected Activision titles, account services, updates, and multiplayer Excellent for its own ecosystem but not a broad multi-publisher storefront
Ubisoft Connect Ubisoft games, account-linked entitlements, updates, and publisher features Primarily useful for Ubisoft releases
EA app EA games, EA account services, and EA Play-related access Mainly a publisher client rather than a universal PC library
Rockstar Games Launcher Rockstar account authentication and selected Rockstar releases Relevant mainly to Rockstar games
Riot Client League of Legends, VALORANT, and other Riot titles Designed around Riot’s own games
itch.io app Indie, experimental, freeware, and creator-distributed games Strong in its niche but not a full replacement for major PC storefronts
Heroic Games Launcher Epic, GOG, and Amazon libraries, especially for Linux and handheld use Better treated as a platform-specific alternative than the default Windows recommendation

Publisher-operated clients are not necessarily bad software. Battle.net can be the correct answer for a Blizzard-focused player, just as Ubisoft Connect or the EA app can be unavoidable for players centered on those publishers. They are excluded from the general top five because their primary value is tied to one publisher’s catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the main launcher problems and how should you avoid them?

Fragmented ownership

A game bought on one storefront generally does not create a transferable license on another storefront. A unified library view can show several purchases together, but the accounts and purchase records remain separate.

Multiple clients opening at launch

A Steam purchase can still open EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, Battle.net, or another publisher client. Multiple clients can increase startup time and create account-recovery, overlay, mod-loader, cloud-save, or anti-cheat complications.

Cloud-save conflicts

Cloud saves are not universal, interchangeable, or always immediate. A cloud save can be unsupported, restricted to one storefront, delayed, or placed in conflict after a device change. Keep manual backups of important save folders before moving a game, changing launchers, or installing mods.

Subscription churn

PC Game Pass is access rather than permanent ownership. A game can leave the catalog, and access can stop when a subscription expires. Check the current catalog and buy a favorite game separately if long-term access matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRM-free misunderstandings

DRM-free means the relevant release does not require that form of copy protection; it does not guarantee that online servers remain available, that a title works on every modern Windows version, or that every multiplayer and mod feature is preserved.

Best Value
HP 14 inch Laptop, 2027 Edition, Intel N150 CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB Cloud Storage, Long Battery Life, Win 11 with Microsoft 365
  • 【Powerful Performance】Equipped with an Intel N150 CPU, featuring up to 4.4 GHz, ensuring efficient and powerful multitasking capabilities.
  • 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.

Windows, Linux, and Steam Deck differences

This ranking is aimed at Windows PC gamers. Do not assume that every launcher works equally well on Linux or SteamOS. Native support, Proton or Wine compatibility, anti-cheat, third-party account requirements, and individual game behavior must be checked title by title.

Which PC game launcher should you choose?

If your priority is… Choose first Why
I am new to PC gaming Steam It is the strongest general-purpose starting point for catalog coverage, community tools, mods, controllers, and library management.
I want the most games for a monthly fee Xbox PC app with PC Game Pass The subscription provides access to a changing catalog, including advertised day-one games and EA Play access on the listed plan.
I want offline installers and DRM-free releases GOG GOG provides DRM-free installers where supported and makes Galaxy optional for applicable purchases.
I want free games Epic Games Store Epic’s promotions are the main reason many players keep the client installed.
I hate separate libraries Playnite Playnite combines supported storefronts, local games, and emulators in one front end without pretending to merge ownership.
I mainly play Blizzard games Battle.net The publisher client is the natural and sometimes necessary home for Blizzard’s ecosystem.
I mainly play Ubisoft games Ubisoft Connect Ubisoft account-linked games and services are best handled through Ubisoft’s own client.
I mainly play EA games EA app EA releases and EA account services are centered on the EA client.

Most Windows PC gamers do not need every launcher. A practical setup is Steam plus one specialist client: add Xbox PC Game Pass for subscription access, GOG for DRM-free purchases, Epic for promotions, or Playnite when the collection spans several stores. Install publisher clients only when a game or service actually requires them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Steam still the best PC game launcher in 2026?

Yes, Steam is the best overall PC game launcher in 2026 for most Windows PC gamers because it balances catalog breadth, community tools, mod support, cloud features, controller support, and library management. Steam is not universally DRM-free, and some Steam purchases still require a separate publisher client.

Is PC Game Pass better than buying games on Steam?

PC Game Pass is better for players who sample many games or want subscription access to a changing catalog, while Steam purchases are better for players who want a specific game for long-term access. PC Game Pass access ends when the subscription expires or when a game leaves the catalog.

Does Playnite replace Steam, Epic, or other launchers?

No. Playnite is a library manager and front end, not a storefront or ownership-transfer service. Playnite may still open the original client for authentication, installation, updates, DRM, achievements, anti-cheat, or multiplayer.

Are GOG games completely free of launchers and DRM?

Many GOG releases provide DRM-free offline installers, and GOG Galaxy is optional for applicable purchases. Individual games can still have compatibility limits, online-service requirements, multiplayer restrictions, or game-specific technical dependencies.

Can Epic Games Launcher play games bought on Steam?

No. Epic’s support documentation says games purchased through Steam, Origin, or Ubisoft Connect cannot be played through Epic merely because Epic Games Launcher is installed. A library shortcut or aggregation feature does not transfer the original license.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Steam remains the best overall PC game launcher of 2026, but the best setup depends on how you play. Add PC Game Pass for subscription value, GOG for DRM-free ownership, Epic for free-game promotions, or Playnite to organize a fragmented collection. None of those choices guarantees that publisher clients or platform-specific account requirements will disappear.
