The best PC benchmark software for Windows in 2025 depends on the workload: use 3DMark for gaming GPUs, PassMark PerformanceTest for broad hardware comparisons, PCMark 10 for office work, Cinebench for CPU rendering, CrystalDiskMark for storage, and OCCT for stability testing. HWiNFO monitors temperatures and clocks but does not produce a performance score.
No single benchmark measures every aspect of a Windows PC. A gaming laptop, office desktop, editing workstation and new gaming build need different tests because each benchmark uses a different workload.
This guide treats the title as a 2025 buying guide, while clearly labeling later information visible on official product pages as a post-2025 update. The current research date is August 18, 2026, and several products now show newer releases or successor products.

The correct choice depends on what you need to learn:
| Reader goal | Best first choice | What it measures | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming GPU performance | 3DMark | Game-oriented 3D rendering, ray tracing and CPU profiles | A synthetic score cannot predict every game |
| Broad hardware comparison | PassMark PerformanceTest | CPU, graphics, memory, storage, networking, physics and GPU compute | The aggregate score is synthetic |
| Office and everyday PC use | PCMark 10 | Web browsing, conferencing, writing, spreadsheets and content creation | UL now recommends Procyon for new customers |
| CPU rendering | Cinebench | Single-core and multi-core rendering performance | Scores must be compared within the same release |
| Cross-platform CPU or compute | Geekbench 7 | CPU and GPU Compute workloads | GPU Compute is not game-rendering performance |
| SSD or hard-drive speed | CrystalDiskMark | Sequential and random read/write throughput | Settings, drive condition and version affect results |
| Stability and fault diagnosis | OCCT | CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM and power-related behavior | A failed test identifies instability, not always the faulty part |
| Temperatures and clocks | HWiNFO | Sensor readings, utilization, power, fans and throttling | HWiNFO is a monitor, not a benchmark |
What is the difference between a benchmark, a stress test and a monitor?
A benchmark runs a controlled workload and produces a score, time, throughput figure or frame rate that can be compared with another result. A stress test deliberately loads hardware to expose crashes, overheating, power problems or calculation errors. A monitor reports what the hardware is doing, including temperatures, clock speeds, utilization, fan speeds and power draw.
| Category | Purpose | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | Measure repeatable performance | 3DMark, Cinebench, CrystalDiskMark, Geekbench |
| Stress test | Expose instability or excessive heat | OCCT, Unigine Superposition loop testing |
| Monitoring tool | Show temperatures, clocks, power and throttling | HWiNFO |
A benchmark result is meaningful only when the workload, software version, preset, resolution, power mode and system condition are known. Background applications, thermal throttling and different memory configurations can make two apparently similar PCs produce very different results.
Which software is best for gaming PC and GPU benchmarks?
3DMark is the best first choice for gaming PC and GPU benchmarking. The official 3DMark test catalogue includes workloads for different graphics APIs, resolutions, device classes and rendering techniques, along with result comparisons and hardware monitoring.
Important 3DMark tests include:
- Steel Nomad: a demanding non-ray-traced 4K gaming benchmark.
- Steel Nomad Light: a lighter option for less powerful systems.
- Speed Way: a DirectX 12 Ultimate ray-tracing benchmark.
- Time Spy: a DirectX 12 test at 2560×1440.
- Time Spy Extreme: a 4K DirectX 12 test.
- Port Royal: a dedicated real-time ray-tracing test.
- Fire Strike: a DirectX 11 gaming benchmark.
- CPU Profile: CPU scaling tests at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and maximum threads.
- Storage Benchmark: a gaming-oriented SSD test.
- Night Raid: a lower-power and integrated-graphics test.
Choose the test that matches the question. Use Time Spy for a DirectX 12 comparison, Port Royal or Speed Way for ray tracing, Steel Nomad for demanding modern rasterized graphics, Night Raid for lower-power integrated graphics, and CPU Profile for thread-scaling behavior. Results from different 3DMark tests are not interchangeable.
3DMark can compare a result with systems using the same CPU and GPU combination, and the application displays CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds and frame-rate changes during the run. The official minimum requirements include 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB of system memory and DirectX 11 graphics. Some tests and features require paid editions or separately purchased content, so a free download should not be confused with unrestricted access to every test.
3DMark is not a complete PC benchmark. A strong 3DMark score does not establish office responsiveness, CPU-rendering speed, SSD performance or stability in every game. Pair 3DMark with an in-game benchmark and HWiNFO when validating a gaming upgrade.

Is PassMark PerformanceTest the best overall PC benchmark?
PassMark PerformanceTest is the best broad hardware benchmark when one application covering many components is the priority. The official PerformanceTest product page lists tests for CPU, 2D graphics, 3D graphics, memory, disks, networking, visualized physics and GPU compute.
PerformanceTest produces a PassMark Rating and component-level results. PassMark says its comparison database contains baselines from more than one million computers; that figure is a PassMark claim, not an independent measurement. The database can be useful for spotting an unusually low result, especially when the comparison system has similar hardware.
PerformanceTest is particularly useful for:
- Checking whether a new PC performs broadly as expected.
- Comparing an old system with a replacement.
- Measuring the effect of a CPU, GPU, memory or storage upgrade.
- Testing refurbished systems for IT work.
- Running standard tests from a USB drive without a network connection.
Standard features are free, while advanced tests are available during the trial and require a license for continued use. PassMark says its license has no annual fee, no hardware locking and no online activation requirement.
The main weakness is the headline aggregate score. A PC can receive a respectable overall rating while having a slow SSD, weak integrated graphics or a configuration problem that matters greatly to the owner. Inspect the CPU, graphics, memory and disk results separately instead of relying only on PassMark Rating. Firmware, cooling, power limits, memory channel configuration, drivers and benchmark versions also affect comparisons.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is PCMark 10 better for office PCs and laptops?
PCMark 10 is better than a purely synthetic component suite for comparing everyday office and general-purpose Windows systems. PCMark 10 uses workloads based on web browsing, video conferencing, application startup, writing, spreadsheets and digital-content creation, as documented on the official PCMark 10 page.
Its workload groups include:
- Essentials: web browsing, video conferencing and application startup.
- Productivity: spreadsheet and writing workloads.
- Digital Content Creation: photo editing, video editing, rendering and visualization.
- Extended workloads: additional gaming-related graphics and physics tests in the Extended edition.
- Battery profiles: Modern Office, Applications, Video, Gaming and Idle scenarios.
PCMark 10 also includes an Applications benchmark using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Edge. PCMark 10 reports high-level, mid-level and low-level workload scores rather than only one headline number, which helps explain where a system is fast or slow.
Important current-status note: UL describes PCMark 10 as an older product, says basic support continues, and recommends Procyon as its successor for new customers. PCMark 10 remains relevant to a 2025 guide, but a current buyer should check UL’s newer Procyon products rather than assume PCMark 10 is the newest productivity benchmark.

Which benchmark is best for CPU rendering?
Cinebench is the best choice for comparing CPU rendering performance. Cinebench uses technology from Maxon’s professional rendering software, making it relevant to 3D artists, content creators and users comparing processors for rendering workloads. The official Cinebench download page should be used to identify the exact release before testing.
Recommended Free Tools
Run and report both:
- Single-core performance for lightly threaded work and per-core responsiveness.
- Multi-core performance for workloads that can use many CPU threads, including rendering.
A short run shows peak performance. Several repeated multi-core runs reveal whether a laptop or compact desktop can maintain performance after the cooler reaches a higher temperature. A first run can be faster because the system begins cold; later results may expose power or thermal limits.
Cinebench is not a gaming, storage or whole-PC benchmark. Scores from different major Cinebench releases should not be mixed. The current official page offers Cinebench 2026 for Windows x86_64 and Windows ARM64, but that later release should not be presented as though it were available during 2025.
Is Geekbench 7 good for quick cross-platform comparisons?
Geekbench 7 is a convenient quick benchmark for comparing CPU and GPU Compute performance across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. The official Geekbench editions page lists CPU, GPU Compute and online result management in the free Geekbench 7 edition.
Geekbench is useful when a reader wants to compare a Windows PC with a Mac or mobile device, share a result page, or obtain a quick single-core and multi-core CPU check. The GPU Compute test should not be interpreted as a game-rendering score; game performance depends on graphics APIs, drivers, resolution, ray tracing, upscaling and the game engine.

A short benchmark may not reveal long-term thermal throttling. Use repeated runs and HWiNFO when testing a laptop or compact PC under sustained load.
Which software is best for testing SSD and hard-drive speed?
CrystalDiskMark is the best straightforward Windows tool for measuring SSD and hard-drive read/write throughput. CrystalDiskMark measures sequential and random performance and supports peak, real-world and demo modes, according to the official CrystalDiskMark documentation.
Sequential results describe large, orderly transfers. Random results use smaller access patterns and are often more relevant to operating-system and application activity. Neither result alone describes every aspect of storage responsiveness, latency or sustained write behavior.
CrystalDiskMark’s official page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support for x86, x64 and ARM64 systems. The same page warns that results depend on test-file size, test-file position, fragmentation, the controller, CPU speed and the wider storage configuration. Results can also differ depending on whether random or zero-filled data is used.
Before testing, confirm the selected drive and partition. A nearly full SSD, an active Windows boot drive, background downloads, thermal throttling, a restricted PCIe slot or a different capacity model can all reduce results. Manufacturer speed claims usually represent ideal peak conditions, so a lower real-world result is not automatically a fault.
CrystalDiskMark warns that its workload may shorten the life of SSDs or USB memory and that results are not compatible between different major versions. Keep the benchmark version, test profile, test size, queue depth and thread count identical when comparing two drives. Running CrystalDiskMark as administrator can also prevent network drives from appearing.
Which tool is best for stability and fault diagnosis?
OCCT is the best first stability and fault-diagnosis tool for a new build, overclock, undervolt or system that crashes under load. OCCT tests the CPU, RAM, memory, GPU, VRAM and power behavior, and combines stress testing with monitoring and error detection. The official OCCT page describes the application as an all-in-one stability, stress-test, benchmark and monitoring tool.
Use OCCT when a benchmark shows an unexpectedly low result, a game crashes, a new build produces black screens, or an overclock appears stable in a short application test. A useful diagnostic sequence is:
- Run a short CPU test.
- Run a memory or CPU-and-RAM test.
- Run a GPU test, then a VRAM test.
- Use a combined power test only while watching temperatures and power behavior carefully.
- Increase duration after the short tests pass.
OCCT is portable and does not require installation or external dependencies. OCCT says its free edition remains usable for most diagnosis, although limitations apply. Paid Pro and higher commercial tiers are more relevant to technicians, system builders and businesses.

Stop a test if temperatures become unsafe, visual artifacts appear, the system becomes unstable or hardware behaves abnormally. OCCT describes its CPU test as capable of producing extreme CPU heat and its power test as placing heavy combined CPU/GPU load on the system. A failed test proves that the chosen workload is not stable, but it does not always identify the defective component. Windows-based memory testing also cannot test memory reserved for other programs; OCCT explicitly notes that limitation.
Is Unigine Superposition still worth using?
Unigine Superposition remains useful as a free GPU visual and loop stress test, but 3DMark is the stronger modern gaming-comparison choice. Superposition provides a demanding 3D workload, GPU-temperature and clock monitoring, loop testing, a free exploration mode and global leaderboards through the official Unigine page.
Superposition is useful for checking GPU cooling, visual artifacts and overclock behavior in a repeatable scene. Its limitation is age: the official page lists version 1.1 from 2019. Superposition should therefore be treated as an older but useful stress and visual benchmark, not automatically as the best current standard for modern API or ray-tracing comparisons.

Why should HWiNFO run beside a benchmark?
HWiNFO should run beside a benchmark because it records the temperatures, clocks, utilization, power and throttling that explain a score. HWiNFO does not benchmark performance itself; HWiNFO reports system behavior while 3DMark, Cinebench, CrystalDiskMark or another test produces the result.
Useful readings include:
- CPU package and core temperatures.
- GPU temperature and hotspot temperature.
- CPU and GPU core or boost clocks.
- CPU and GPU utilization.
- Package and board power.
- Thermal or power-limit throttling indicators.
- Fan speeds and SSD temperature.
- Memory usage and available system memory.
The official HWiNFO download page lists Windows x64 and ARM64 packages and version 8.50 in the current research. HWiNFO 64 and ARM64 freeware editions are identified as free for non-commercial use; commercial technicians and organizations should review HWiNFO Pro licensing.
How should you benchmark a Windows PC correctly?
A repeatable Windows benchmark requires the same software version, settings, power mode and system conditions for every comparison.
- Update the system: install relevant Windows updates, motherboard firmware where appropriate and current graphics drivers.
- Reboot: start the test from a clean session.
- Close background work: exit browsers, game launchers, cloud-sync applications, downloads and unnecessary monitoring overlays.
- Set the power condition: plug a laptop into AC power and record whether Windows is using Silent, Balanced or Performance mode.
- Stabilize the starting temperature: allow the PC to reach a consistent idle state before the first run.
- Record the configuration: note the CPU, GPU, RAM capacity and channel arrangement, storage model, Windows version, driver version and benchmark version.
- Use a defined preset: record resolution, graphics API, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, test-file size and other relevant options.
- Run at least twice: investigate large differences between runs instead of averaging inconsistent results blindly.
- Monitor the run: use HWiNFO to record temperatures, clocks, power and throttling.
- Validate stability separately: use OCCT after performance testing when the purpose is a new-build, overclock or undervolt check.
What should laptop owners control?
Laptop results depend heavily on conditions beyond the processor and graphics model. Record AC or battery operation, Windows power mode, fan profile, ambient temperature, display resolution, external-monitor use, battery charge level and whether the laptop sits on a desk or soft surface.
Repeat Cinebench or another sustained test several times. A cold first run can be faster than later runs after the cooling system reaches its limit. A lower sustained result may indicate a manufacturer power limit or thermal design choice rather than a defective processor.
What should gaming benchmark reports include?
Gaming results should include resolution, graphics API, ray-tracing state, upscaling and frame-generation settings, graphics-driver version, GPU power limit, fan profile and ambient temperature. A 1440p DirectX 12 score cannot be compared directly with a 4K ray-tracing score.
Use a repeatable built-in game benchmark when the question concerns one particular game. Use 3DMark to compare standardized graphics workloads, then use HWiNFO and OCCT to investigate temperatures or stability.
What should storage benchmark reports include?
Storage reports should identify the drive model, capacity, interface, PCIe generation, free space, test-file size, queue-depth and thread settings, whether the drive is the Windows boot drive, and whether CrystalDiskMark used a peak or real-world profile. CrystalDiskMark specifically documents that test-file size, position, fragmentation, controller and CPU speed can affect results.

Why is my benchmark score lower than online results?
A lower-than-expected score usually reflects a difference in conditions rather than one immediately identifiable hardware fault. Check these causes:

- Thermal throttling, a conservative fan profile or a higher ambient temperature.
- Single-channel memory or an incorrect XMP or EXPO configuration.
- Background applications, downloads or cloud synchronization.
- Older BIOS, chipset or graphics drivers.
- Manufacturer power limits, especially on laptops.
- Different cooling, memory speed, storage capacity or motherboard slot.
- An online result produced by an overclocked system.
Compare the same benchmark version and settings first. Then inspect component-level results and HWiNFO sensor data. A high CPU score paired with a slow storage score, for example, can explain a system that feels slow during application launches despite a good overall rating.
What should you do when a benchmark crashes?
A crashing benchmark warrants a structured diagnosis rather than repeated identical runs. Check the graphics driver, CPU or GPU overclock, undervolt, RAM stability, temperatures, power supply and Windows Event Viewer. Also verify that the benchmark supports the GPU and graphics API and that the system has adequate virtual memory and disk space.
Run OCCT’s CPU, memory, GPU and VRAM tests separately. A component-specific test can help narrow the problem, although no single failed test proves which physical part is defective. A benchmark can pass while a game crashes because the game uses a different API, shader path, VRAM pattern or prolonged heat load. Game-specific driver problems and frame-generation or ray-tracing paths can also expose instability that a general benchmark misses.
How much do the main benchmark tools cost?
Pricing and licensing change, and availability can vary by country and edition. The practical distinction is whether a free edition is sufficient or whether automation, commercial use, advanced tests or extended features justify payment.
| Tool | Free or basic availability | Paid or commercial consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 3DMark | Some content may be available through basic or trial access | Paid editions and separately purchased benchmark content exist |
| PassMark PerformanceTest | Standard features are free | Advanced tests, support and multi-user or site licensing require paid options |
| PCMark 10 | Edition and workload availability varies | Business users should also evaluate UL’s successor product, Procyon |

| HWiNFO | 64-bit and ARM64 freeware editions are for non-commercial use | Commercial monitoring requires reviewing HWiNFO Pro licensing |
What changed after the 2025 guide period?
This article keeps “in 2025” in the title because the requested guide is framed around that year. The current research date is August 18, 2026, so the following details are later updates rather than claims about what existed throughout 2025.
- Maxon’s current download page offers Cinebench 2026 for Windows x86_64 and Windows ARM64.
- UL’s current 3DMark page lists version 2.32.8874 dated June 15, 2026.
- CrystalDiskMark’s official page lists version 9.0.3 dated May 24, 2026.
- HWiNFO’s download page lists version 8.50 for current installer and portable packages.
- UL continues to support PCMark 10 but recommends Procyon as its successor for new customers.
Always record the exact version used. Current version numbers should not be used to compare results from a historical 2025 test unless the same release and settings were used.
Final verdict: which Windows benchmark should you install?
Install PassMark PerformanceTest when you want one broad synthetic hardware check. Install 3DMark when gaming and GPU performance matter most. Use PCMark 10, with the Procyon succession qualification, for office and everyday laptop workloads. Choose Cinebench for CPU rendering, CrystalDiskMark for SSD speed, OCCT for stability and fault diagnosis, and HWiNFO to understand temperatures, power and throttling.
The most trustworthy evaluation is usually a combination: 3DMark for gaming graphics, Cinebench for CPU rendering, CrystalDiskMark for storage, OCCT for stability and HWiNFO for telemetry. Use identical versions and settings, report the test conditions, and treat every score as evidence about one workload rather than a verdict on the entire PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free PC benchmark software for Windows?
The best free combination is Geekbench for a quick CPU and GPU Compute check, CrystalDiskMark for storage, OCCT’s free edition for diagnosis, Superposition Basic for GPU stress testing and HWiNFO for monitoring. No free tool measures every workload equally well.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can one benchmark test the whole PC accurately?
No single benchmark accurately represents every Windows PC workload. PassMark PerformanceTest offers the broadest component coverage, while PCMark 10 models everyday productivity more realistically and 3DMark focuses on gaming graphics.
Should I use OCCT or Cinebench to test my CPU?
Use Cinebench to measure CPU rendering performance and OCCT to look for instability, errors and excessive heat. Cinebench produces a comparable performance score; OCCT applies stress and diagnostic workloads and is not a replacement for a rendering benchmark.
Why should benchmark versions match?
Benchmark results should use the same software version, preset and settings because changes to workloads can change scores. CrystalDiskMark explicitly warns that results are not compatible between different major versions, and the same comparison principle should be applied to other benchmark software.
Does HWiNFO benchmark a PC?
No. HWiNFO is a Windows hardware-monitoring companion that reports temperatures, clocks, utilization, power, fan speeds and throttling while another program performs the benchmark.
