There is no evidence-backed universal winner. The right open-source coding assistant depends on where you work and how much control you want: Continue is the broadest IDE option with a terminal CLI, Cline is an agent with explicit approval controls, Aider is built around terminal-and-Git workflows, and Tabby is a self-hosted completion service. All four can fit a local-model strategy, but “open source” alone does not prove that inference happens on your computer. You must verify the configured endpoint and model.

This guide compares their interfaces, agent behavior, local-model support, deployment implications and review workflows. It also explains what the available documentation does not establish: there is no common code-quality benchmark or published minimum hardware specification for a fair ranking.

Which open-source AI coding assistant is best for local models?

The best starting point is the tool that matches your primary workflow, not a claimed accuracy ranking. Continue is the strongest fit for developers who live in VS Code or JetBrains and want chat, editing, autocomplete, agent features and a CLI. Cline suits developers who want a coding agent that can plan and execute multi-file work while pausing for approval. Aider is the natural choice for terminal-first, Git-centered pair programming. Tabby is aimed at teams that want to operate a self-hosted completion service.

Tool Best starting point Documented local-model or hosting evidence Main decision axis
Continue VS Code or JetBrains developers who want several modes plus a CLI Official documentation includes an Ollama guide IDE breadth and mode flexibility
Cline Developers who want an agent and control over each action Product page lists Ollama, LM Studio and OpenAI-compatible endpoints Agent autonomy and permission controls
Aider Terminal-first developers who review changes through Git Official page says it connects to local as well as cloud models Shell workflow and repository review
Tabby Teams prioritizing a self-hosted completion service Documentation describes self-hosting, model support, deployment and editor extensions Operating and maintaining a shared service

These are documented capability differences, not a performance league table. The official sources reviewed for this comparison do not publish a directly comparable benchmark across the four projects, so claims such as “the most accurate” or “the fastest” would not be evidence-based.

What does “open-source assistant with local models” actually mean?

It describes two separate choices. First, the client—the extension, agent or service you interact with—has source available under its project terms. Second, the client sends prompts and code to a model endpoint that you operate locally or on infrastructure you control. The first does not guarantee the second.

A client can support both local and hosted providers. Cline, for example, lists local Ollama and LM Studio endpoints alongside hosted providers on its product page. Aider likewise describes connections to local models as well as cloud LLMs. Continue documents an Ollama setup, while Tabby is designed as a self-hosted service. In every case, inspect the active provider and endpoint before assuming that source code stays on a workstation.

What “local” can cover

  • On-device inference: the model server runs on the same computer as your editor or terminal.
  • Private-network inference: the model server runs on a machine you control, such as a workstation or internal server, and the client connects to its address.
  • Hosted inference: the client sends requests to an external provider. This may still be configured through an open-source client, but it is not local inference.

Check both sides of the connection: the assistant’s provider setting and the model server’s address. Also check whether extensions, telemetry, update checks or authentication features make separate network requests. The documented capabilities establish endpoint support; they do not constitute a blanket privacy guarantee.

How does Continue fit a local-model workflow?

Continue is the broadest IDE-oriented option in this group. Its official documentation covers VS Code and JetBrains extensions and lists agent, chat, edit, autocomplete and terminal CLI modes. Developers who want one project that spans interactive editor work and shell tasks should start here.

Where Continue is strongest

  • Multiple interaction modes: you can move between conversational questions, inline edits, autocomplete and agent-style tasks instead of adopting a separate tool for each job.
  • IDE coverage: support for both VS Code and JetBrains is useful when a team uses more than one editor family.
  • Terminal access: the documented CLI mode lets you use Continue-style assistance outside the graphical editor.
  • Ollama path: the official docs include a guide for connecting to Ollama, giving local-model users a documented starting point.

Questions to answer before choosing Continue

Decide whether your team values a consistent editor experience more than a terminal-native review loop. Continue’s breadth can mean more configuration choices, so define which models and modes are allowed in a repository. Confirm the endpoint shown in your configuration rather than relying on the fact that the extension itself is open source.

Continue is the most defensible first trial for a developer who spends most of the day in VS Code or JetBrains and wants autocomplete alongside chat, edits and agent features. It is less obviously suited to a team whose primary review practice is an entirely terminal-based Git session.

How does Cline differ from a conventional editor assistant?

Cline is positioned as a coding agent rather than only an autocomplete or chat panel. Its site describes plan-and-act work, multi-file edits, IDE, terminal and desktop use, and connections to local endpoints including Ollama and LM Studio. Its defining choice is how much authority you grant each step.

Approval and autonomy

Cline’s product page says: “Approve every step, or flip auto-approve for autopilot.” Treat that as product-page copy, not as a guarantee that every task is safe to automate. Step-by-step approval gives you a checkpoint before actions such as editing files or running commands; auto-approval reduces friction but increases the consequences of a mistaken plan.

When Cline is a good fit

  • You want the assistant to reason over a task, create a plan and make coordinated changes across files.
  • You need to switch between an IDE, terminal and desktop interface while retaining the same agent concept.
  • You want to start with local Ollama or LM Studio and retain the option of an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • You prefer explicit permission decisions instead of an assistant that silently executes a long chain of actions.

What to control in a Cline deployment

Set a default to review actions individually until you understand the agent’s behavior in your repository. Limit the files and commands that an automated run can touch through your normal operating-system and repository permissions. Then verify which model endpoint is active; selecting Cline does not, by itself, determine where inference occurs.

Why do terminal developers choose Aider?

Aider is a terminal pair-programming tool. Its official page describes local and cloud LLM connections, codebase mapping, Git integration, and linting and testing after changes. This makes it a natural match for developers who want every AI-generated edit to pass through familiar shell commands and version-control review.

Aider’s workflow advantages

  • Terminal-first interaction: work from the same environment where you run builds, tests and deployment scripts.
  • Codebase mapping: the documented mapping feature helps the model reason about a repository beyond the single file currently open.
  • Git integration: changes can be inspected with your normal diff, branch and commit practices.
  • Lint and test loop: Aider’s official description includes running linting and tests after edits, which supports a verify-before-commit workflow.
  • Local-model choice: the project states that it can connect to local models as well as cloud providers.

Trade-offs for IDE-centric teams

Aider’s strengths are concentrated in the shell. If inline completion, graphical navigation or JetBrains-specific workflows are your priority, Continue may be a smoother starting point. If your team already treats the terminal, Git diff and automated tests as the source of truth, Aider’s design minimizes the distance between an AI suggestion and a reviewable change.

What is Tabby, and when does self-hosting make sense?

Tabby is built around a self-hosted code-completion service rather than a single-user editor agent. Its official documentation covers deployment, model support and editor extensions; the project’s repository provides the source and project context.

Tabby’s distinctive operating model

  • Service first: you operate the Tabby server and connect supported editors to it.
  • Self-hosted control: hosting the service yourself can centralize model access and configuration for a team.
  • Completion emphasis: Tabby’s documented focus is code completion, so compare it with agent-oriented tools only after defining whether you need autonomous multi-file changes.
  • Deployment responsibility: the team running the service owns installation, upgrades, model selection, access control and capacity planning.

Who should evaluate Tabby?

Tabby is worth evaluating when a team wants a shared, internally operated completion endpoint and is prepared to maintain a service. A solo developer seeking chat, terminal commands and plan-and-act behavior may find Continue, Cline or Aider a more direct first experiment. The documentation establishes the self-hosted architecture; it does not establish a universal advantage in completion quality.

Which of these assistants works with Ollama?

All four have a documented path to local or self-hosted use, but the evidence is not identical. Continue provides an Ollama guide. Cline explicitly lists Ollama and LM Studio support. Aider says it can connect to local models without naming only one runtime. Tabby documents a self-hosted service and model support rather than presenting itself as an Ollama-only client.

How should you choose between IDE modes, agents, terminals and services?

Start with the place where a wrong interaction would cost you the most time, then choose the tool that keeps review visible there.

Choose Continue when editor breadth matters

Pick Continue if you need VS Code and JetBrains support, autocomplete, chat, editing, agent features and a CLI in one project. It is the broadest match for a developer who changes interaction style throughout the day.

Choose Cline when permission checkpoints matter

Pick Cline if the assistant should plan and execute multi-file work but you want the option to approve each step. Keep approval enabled while establishing trust; use auto-approval only when your repository permissions and review process can absorb mistakes.

Choose Aider when Git is your primary interface

Pick Aider if you want to ask for changes from a shell, inspect a diff, run lint and tests, and decide what to commit. Its value is the tight loop between model output and existing engineering controls.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Tabby when a team needs a maintained service

Pick Tabby if the goal is a self-hosted completion service with editor extensions and centralized operation. Assign ownership for deployment, upgrades, model compatibility and access; self-hosting shifts work to your team rather than removing it.

Use a two-tool evaluation only for a clear reason

Some teams may use an IDE assistant for completion and a terminal tool for repository-wide changes. If you do this, define which tool is allowed to edit files, which endpoint each uses and where logs or prompts are retained. Without those rules, “local” can become inconsistent from one workflow to the next.

How do you set up a local-model coding workflow safely?

The exact screens differ by project, but the following sequence prevents the most common assumption: installing an open-source client and mistakenly believing every request is local.

  1. Choose the interaction surface. Decide whether your first trial is an IDE extension, a terminal session, an agent with approvals or a self-hosted service. Start with one repository and one clearly defined task.
  2. Install the model runtime and model. Use the runtime’s own documentation and confirm that the model is available locally. The Ollama library is a reference for Ollama model entries, not a hardware recommendation.
  3. Configure the assistant’s provider. In Continue, Cline, Aider or Tabby, select the local server or endpoint documented for that project. Do not leave a hosted provider selected as a silent fallback if local inference is a requirement.
  4. Run a harmless connectivity test. Ask for a small explanation or a change in a disposable file. Confirm in the runtime or server interface that the request arrived at the local endpoint.
  5. Establish review boundaries. For an agent, keep per-step approval on initially. For terminal workflows, work on a branch or clean working tree so that Git can show every change.
  6. Verify generated code. Run the repository’s normal formatter, linter and tests. A successful model response is not a test result.
  7. Document the configuration. Record the endpoint, model identifier, allowed tools and who maintains the runtime. This prevents one developer from using a hosted fallback while another believes the same assistant is fully local.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the main failure modes, and how can you fix them?

The assistant is installed but requests fail

Check that the local model server is running, the endpoint address is correct and the selected model exists in that runtime. A client can be healthy while the model provider is unavailable, so test the server independently before changing assistant settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responses are unexpectedly slow

The reviewed project pages do not publish common hardware requirements or a cross-tool speed benchmark. Avoid assuming that changing assistants will solve a runtime bottleneck; first check the model, context size, server load and whether another process is using the machine.

The tool edits more than expected

In an agent, turn on step-by-step approval and narrow the repository permissions available to the process. In a terminal workflow, use a branch or clean working tree and inspect the diff before staging anything.

Code appears to leave the machine

Recheck the provider and endpoint in the active configuration, including any fallback provider. “Open source” describes the client’s project status, not the destination of every request. Confirm the runtime’s own network behavior and your organization’s logging policy.

The model cannot understand the repository

Use the tool’s repository-aware features where documented: Aider describes codebase mapping, while agent and IDE tools may need explicit files or context. Reduce the task to a small reproducible change, then add context deliberately instead of sending an entire repository without a review plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do the official sources not tell you?

They do not provide a shared accuracy benchmark for Continue, Cline, Aider and Tabby. They also do not establish a minimum CPU, GPU, memory or storage specification that guarantees a useful local coding workflow. Model size listings and runtime documentation can help you plan an experiment, but they are not a substitute for testing the model on your repository and hardware.

That evidence gap matters when reading rankings. A tool can have excellent approval controls or a convenient IDE integration without producing better code on your language, framework or codebase. Treat capability claims as reasons to run a controlled trial, not as proof of comparative quality.

What should you measure in a short evaluation?

Use the same small set of tasks with each candidate and record observations rather than relying on impressions from a single prompt.

  • Task completion: did the assistant make the requested change without unrelated edits?
  • Review effort: how much manual correction was needed before the diff was acceptable?
  • Verification: did the project’s formatter, linter and tests pass after the change?
  • Context handling: could the tool locate the relevant files and respect repository conventions?
  • Permission behavior: were command and file changes visible at the point you needed to approve them?
  • Locality: did the active provider and server logs confirm that inference used the intended endpoint?
  • Operations: how difficult was it to install, update, monitor and troubleshoot the runtime?

Keep the model and task constant when comparing clients, then keep the client constant when comparing models. That separation will not create a universal benchmark, but it will reveal which combination fits your own constraints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which assistant should you try first?

Try Continue first if your work is primarily in VS Code or JetBrains and you want the widest set of interaction modes. Try Cline first if controlled agent execution is the central requirement. Try Aider first if your terminal, Git diff and test commands are already the way you collaborate with code. Try Tabby first if your objective is a self-hosted completion service that a team will operate.

Whichever path you choose, make the endpoint an explicit acceptance criterion. The practical distinction is not “open source versus closed source”; it is whether the assistant, model runtime, approval policy and repository review process work together in the way your team requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a local-model coding assistant work without an internet connection?

Possibly, if the model runtime and client are already installed and configured on your network, but the reviewed project pages do not promise completely offline operation. Extensions may still perform update checks or require downloads, so test your intended disconnected environment rather than assuming offline behavior.

Do these projects include the AI model itself?

The assistant and the model are separate components. Continue, Cline, Aider and Tabby document ways to connect to model endpoints, while the model’s own availability and license come from the runtime or model publisher; verify both before deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can a team keep local-model settings consistent across developers?

Standardize the approved endpoint, model identifier, fallback policy and review permissions in your team documentation. Then have each developer verify the active provider with a small test request and record the result before working on sensitive code.

Is self-hosting automatically cheaper than using a hosted model?

Not necessarily. A self-hosted setup shifts spending and effort toward hardware, electricity, storage, maintenance and administration, while hosted services charge for usage. The sources reviewed here do not provide a cost comparison, so evaluate the total operating burden for your environment.
