For OGG files encoded with Vorbis, use quality-based variable bitrate (VBR) when you want a balance of sound quality and file size and do not have a strict bitrate limit. If a service requires a bounded bitrate, use Vorbis managed-bitrate settings instead. Opus in an Ogg container has different encoding and playback guidance: do not apply Vorbis quality numbers to Opus.
What are the best OGG settings for good quality and small file size?
Ogg is a container, not an audio codec. Vorbis and Opus are separate codecs that can be stored in Ogg, and their settings are not interchangeable. First confirm which codec your encoder or player is using.
For Vorbis, Xiph recommends VBR when bitrate constraints are not required. VBR allocates data in response to the audio rather than aiming for a fixed rate throughout. Higher Vorbis quality settings generally produce larger files; lowering the setting can reduce size, with a corresponding risk of audible loss. There is no universally optimal value established by the codec documentation.
- Choose quality-based VBR when your priority is a consistent quality preference and file size can vary.
- Choose managed bitrate when a streaming, delivery, or storage system sets a bitrate limit.
- Keep the source sample rate and channel count unless your workflow has a specific reason to convert them.
- Check playback compatibility on the target device or application if it matters where the file will play.
These recommendations reflect Xiph’s libvorbisenc examples and VBR initialization documentation; they are encoder guidance, not results from comparative listening tests.

What Vorbis quality setting should I use?
Vorbis quality is a preference control, not a promise that a file will be transparent or a fixed file-size target. Xiph documents a scale from -0.1 (low) to 1.0 (high), with higher quality generally requiring more data. The documentation does not designate one setting as best for every recording or listener.
- Encode a short, representative passage at a quality setting you are considering.
- Listen to the result on the playback setup that matters to you, comparing it with the source.
- If you hear unwanted differences, raise the quality setting; if you need smaller files, try a lower setting and compare again.
- Repeat with passages that expose the content you care about, such as complex or delicate sounds, rather than judging only one easy section.
File size and audible results vary with the material and encoder, so a setting that works for one collection may not give the same size or result for another. The scale and its behavior are described in Xiph’s Vorbis VBR documentation.

Should I use VBR or a fixed bitrate?
For Vorbis, Xiph states that VBR is the recommended mode when there is no need to impose bitrate constraints. Use managed bitrate setup when those constraints matter. Vorbis provides minimum, nominal, and maximum bitrate settings; decide which limit or target your delivery system actually requires rather than treating them as equivalent.
In VBR, bitrate figures associated with a stream are hints and may be substantially off. A bitrate value should not be read as a guarantee that every moment—or even every file—will remain at that exact rate. Xiph’s programming documentation describes the managed bitrate controls and this qualification on VBR bitrate fields.

For Opus, VBR also varies bitrate over time to pursue consistent quality. Its selected bitrate is an approximate average calibrated across varied audio, not a guarantee that each file or segment will have that exact rate. What sample rate should I use for OGG playback?
Vorbis encoding
For Vorbis, retain the source sample rate and channel count unless there is a specific conversion requirement. Xiph’s Vorbis specification supports input rates from 8 kHz to 192 kHz and a wide range of channel arrangements. It notes 44.1 kHz for CD audio and 48 kHz for DAT as examples, not as instructions to convert other sources to either rate.

Changing a sample rate is not automatically a way to improve fidelity or reduce file size. The encoder setup uses the input sample rate and channels, so preserve the source parameters by default. See the Vorbis I specification and VBR initialization documentation.
Opus playback
For Opus, the original input sample rate is not the playback rate, and lossy Opus does not preserve the original sample rate. Xiph recommends decoding at 48 kHz when the device supports it; the Ogg Opus guidance describes the fallback and resampling procedure for other cases. Follow the player’s Opus implementation rather than trying to make Opus playback mirror the source rate. See Xiph’s OggOpus guidance.

What Opus encoding settings suit ordinary files?
Keep Opus settings separate from Vorbis settings. Xiph’s Opus FAQ says a 20 ms frame works well for most applications. Smaller frames can reduce latency but reduce quality at a given bitrate; longer frames can constrain encoder decisions for file encoding. For a typical file rather than a latency-sensitive use, 20 ms is a reasonable starting point.
Opus VBR adjusts bitrate over time, and the chosen bitrate is an approximate average across varied audio. It should not be interpreted as an exact per-file or per-moment rate. Xiph’s Opus FAQ covers the frame-size and VBR guidance.
How to choose between OGG options
When comparing two encodes, check that you are comparing the same codec and that the destination player supports it. Then consider the quality-versus-size tradeoff, whether the destination imposes an average or strict bitrate requirement, and whether the source and destination require particular sample rates or channel counts. A Vorbis quality value and an Opus bitrate are different kinds of controls, so they cannot be compared as equivalent numbers.
