For a long-distance walk, the best navigation setup is the one with the right map for your route, usable offline, plus a dependable way to keep it powered. A phone with downloaded maps may be enough on a well-documented route; a dedicated handheld such as Garmin’s GPSMAP 67 offers a physical map screen and long manufacturer-rated runtimes. The simpler AA-powered eTrex SE is another option. None is a universal winner: map coverage, battery strategy, screen and controls, weather exposure, weight, and whether you need satellite messaging all matter.

Choose the navigation setup that fits your walk

Start with the route, not the device. Confirm that the map covers the entire walk and shows the detail you need, then decide whether a phone, a dedicated GPS receiver, or both best suit your power, visibility, and backup needs.

  • Phone with offline maps: a practical choice when the correct region and useful map layers can be downloaded in advance. Bring a charging plan and a separate backup if the route warrants one.
  • Dedicated handheld GPS: worth comparing when you want a separate navigation device, physical controls, or a display designed for outdoor use. Check its included maps and battery approach rather than assuming every handheld offers the same mapping.
  • Satellite communicator: consider this separately if you need two-way messaging or SOS capability. Offline maps alone do not provide satellite communication.
  • Paper map and compass: useful as a non-electronic backup when you know how to use them. Great Smoky Mountains National Park lists paper maps alongside its digital resources (NPS maps).

This is a use-case guide, not a field-tested ranking: the cited evidence establishes manufacturer specifications and park-specific mapping examples, not independent comparative runtime, accuracy, or route-coverage results.

Compare the main options

Option Maps and navigation Power and stated runtime Useful distinction
Garmin GPSMAP 67 Garmin lists routable TopoActive maps for the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, plus downloadable satellite imagery. Internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery; up to 180 hours in default GPS mode or 840 hours in expedition mode, according to Garmin. Color map display, multi-band GNSS, and a physical handheld design.
Garmin eTrex SE Supports waypoint and trail tracking/navigation; the cited product information does not establish mapping detail equivalent to the GPSMAP 67. Two AA batteries, sold separately; up to 168 hours in standard mode or 1,800 hours in expedition mode, according to Garmin. Simpler, smaller high-contrast screen and digital compass that works while stationary.
Garmin eTrex 32x Garmin lists routable TopoActive roads and trails. Two AA batteries; up to 25 hours in GPS mode, according to Garmin’s regional product page. Garmin Singapore marks it discontinued; consider only after checking condition, included maps, and availability.
Phone with downloaded maps Depends on the app, downloaded area, map layer, and route data. Official NPS examples are park-specific. Runtime depends on the phone, settings, and use; the cited sources do not establish a comparable figure. Convenient when the route’s map is available offline, but the phone and map must be prepared before connectivity is lost.

Garmin’s handheld figures are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed trip durations. Modes and use affect runtime. Garmin gives the GPSMAP 67 a 3-inch sunlight-readable color display, multi-band GNSS, altimeter, barometer, 3-axis compass, IPX7 water rating, and a weight of 8.1 oz (230 g) with batteries. It also lists microSD storage up to 32 GB for added maps. These details are from Garmin’s GPSMAP 67 product listing; confirm regional product details and included maps before buying.

Garmin GPSMAP 67: a dedicated map-screen option

The GPSMAP 67 is the stronger comparison candidate if you want a handheld with a color map display, preloaded routable maps in its listed regions, and multi-band GNSS. Its listed maps cover the U.S., Mexico, and Canada; that does not establish what is included in every country or whether a particular trail is represented in sufficient detail. Check the actual device bundle and the map data for your route.

Garmin says the GPSMAP 67 manual’s Garmin Explore connected features let users download maps to a phone for offline access. See the GPSMAP 67 Owner’s Manual for the feature details. This is not a guarantee that any trail or map layer is available for download; check coverage and prepare the required content before leaving reliable connectivity.

Extend battery life

Garmin’s manual recommends reducing brightness and backlight timeout, using expedition mode, and disabling wireless, Bluetooth, or additional satellite systems when they are not needed. Those changes trade convenience or tracking behavior for lower power use; test your intended setup before relying on it on a long walk. The stated maximums do not replace a route-specific charging or battery plan.

Garmin eTrex SE: a simpler AA-powered handheld

The eTrex SE is a more basic option with a 2.2-inch high-contrast screen, waypoint and trail tracking/navigation, a digital compass that works while stationary, and an IPX7 water rating. Garmin’s 2023 announcement gives maximum runtimes of 168 hours in standard mode or 1,800 hours in expedition mode using two AA batteries, which are sold separately. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent measurements or promises of trip duration.

Its replaceable AA power source may suit walkers who prefer carrying spare cells to depending on recharging. In return, the screen is smaller and simpler, and the cited specifications do not establish the same mapping capability as the GPSMAP 67. Compare the map experience you actually need, not runtime figures alone. See Garmin’s announcement for the product details.

GPSMAP 67i: choose it for communication, not just maps

The GPSMAP 67i adds inReach satellite communication for two-way messaging, location tracking, and interactive SOS coordination. Garmin says an active satellite subscription is required. That makes it a communications purchase as well as a navigation device; it is not necessary simply to use offline maps. Subscription availability, coverage, and legal requirements can vary, so check the current terms for your location.

When offline phone maps make sense

A phone can work well if the map content for the entire route is downloaded beforehand and the app supports the offline functions you need. Glacier National Park’s official free iOS and Android app offers interactive maps and lets users download park content for offline use. The park advises downloading the app and saving content before arrival because reception is unreliable there; its page notes there is no cell coverage outside Apgar and St. Mary. Those coverage details apply to Glacier, not to parks or trails generally. See the Glacier NPS App page, updated June 24, 2026.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park separately provides a free NPS app, downloadable GPS-enabled topographic maps for use in popular mobile mapping apps, and paper maps (NPS maps and guides). These are examples of park-specific resources, not evidence that one app covers every long-distance trail or that a downloaded map is complete and current.

Check the map, not just the GPS signal

A device’s position reading and the map displayed beneath it are different things. The National Park Service cautions that a consumer device’s GPS position may be more accurate than its base map. A precise location marker cannot make an incomplete or outdated trail map correct. The NPS also says it does not characterize the accuracy or precision of consumer handheld GPS or GPS-enabled mobile devices. Read its Great Smoky Mountains GPS guidance and use the appropriate official route information.

Make a route-specific buying decision

Prioritize coverage and map detail

Check the exact region, route, and map layers included with a device or available in its app. Product bundles and geographic coverage differ. The sources cited here do not establish a universal trail-map completeness rate or coverage for every country.

Match power to the trip

Compare rechargeable versus replaceable power, the operating mode behind a runtime claim, and where you can recharge or change batteries. Garmin’s GPSMAP 67 and eTrex SE maximums use different modes and power sources, so they are not a direct measure of how long either will last in your conditions.

Consider screen and controls in real conditions

Think about whether you can read and operate the screen in bright sun, rain, or with gloves. The GPSMAP 67 has a 3-inch sunlight-readable color display; the eTrex SE has a 2.2-inch high-contrast screen. The cited specifications do not provide a controlled comparison of their usability in every condition.

Separate positioning from durability

Multi-band GNSS is a receiver capability, not proof that a base map is accurate or that a signal will be available in every terrain. Check water resistance and the device’s stated features against your needs, but use current route information to confirm where you are going.

Weigh communication and carrying needs

Include the whole setup in your decision: device, batteries or charging accessories, and any paper backup. The cited sources do not provide reliable current cross-market prices or an independent head-to-head assessment of total carried weight. If you need messaging or SOS, assess the 67i’s subscription-based inReach service separately from ordinary GPS navigation.

Is the eTrex 32x worth considering?

Garmin Singapore labels the eTrex 32x discontinued. Its page lists routable TopoActive roads and trails, 8 GB of internal memory plus microSD, and up to 25 hours in GPS mode on two AA batteries. Treat it as a legacy or used-market option, not a current lead recommendation; verify the device’s condition, included maps, and availability in your region. See Garmin Singapore’s eTrex 32x page.
