For a ready-to-use multicolor FDM printer under $500, the Bambu Lab A1 Combo is the strongest all-around starting point, while Anycubic’s Kobra X is the value alternative. The A1 Combo includes the AMS Lite color-changing system and a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. Anycubic lists the Kobra X at $299 in its U.S. store snapshot, with native four-color printing, expansion to 19 colors and a 260 × 260 × 260 mm volume. Those prices and bundles can change, so verify the exact package, shipping, tax and stock before ordering.
The best choices at a glance
This guide covers filament-based FDM printers that create multicolor parts by switching between spools during a print. They are not full-color inkjet-style machines: the result is a layered plastic object, and every color change can add purge material and time.
The prices below are dated retail observations for the U.S. market, accessed October 25, 2026. They are not guaranteed checkout totals.

| Printer and bundle | Listed price or price context | Build volume | Color capability | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bambu Lab A1 Combo with AMS Lite | Below $500 on Bambu Lab’s U.S. store when accessed October 25, 2026 | 256 × 256 × 256 mm | Up to four colors with one AMS Lite | Buyers who want a complete, relatively large multicolor bundle | Open frame; Bambu Lab does not recommend enclosing it and marks several engineering materials as not recommended |
| Anycubic Kobra X | $299 on Anycubic’s official store snapshot | 260 × 260 × 260 mm | Native four-color printing; listed expansion to 19 colors | Value-focused buyers who want the lowest listed price and a larger stated volume | Confirm whether the seller’s exact bundle includes the required multicolor hardware |
| Anycubic Kobra 4 Combo | $379 on Anycubic’s official global catalog | Build volume not stated in the cited catalog entry | Four colors in the base setup; listed support for up to eight | Buyers prioritizing the catalog’s stated expansion capacity and a bundled option | Availability and package contents need confirmation for your region |
| Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo | Not stated on the cited Bambu Lab page (accessed October 25, 2026) | Smaller than the A1; exact dimensions depend on the cited listing | Combo includes AMS Lite and supports four-color printing | Small workspaces where reduced print size is acceptable | Do not assume every A1 Mini listing includes AMS Lite |
The list is deliberately narrow: these are the models for which the cited manufacturer pages supplied useful current details, plus dated market context. It is not a claim that no other sub-$500 printer exists. Tom’s Hardware’s guide, updated June 25, 2026, places a P1S AMS Combo at $899 in its publication context, illustrating why the multicolor bundle—not just the base printer—determines whether a model fits this budget.

What “multicolor” means in this price range
In an FDM system, the printer lays down one filament at a time. A color-management unit feeds a selected spool, retracts it, loads another and purges the old material before continuing. A single object can therefore contain several colors, but it is still printed from thermoplastic filament in layers.
Color count is a hardware-and-workflow limit, not merely a slicer setting. The A1 series supports one AMS Lite, which Bambu Lab says means a maximum of four colors. Anycubic’s Kobra X listing describes four-color printing built in and a path to 19 colors; reaching that maximum requires additional compatible hardware, cost, space and setup. The Kobra 4 Combo catalog entry describes four colors in its base configuration and support for up to eight.
More colors are useful only when your models actually need them. A two-tone sign, logo or character may never benefit from a 19-color expansion. Conversely, a display model with many small color regions can consume substantial purge filament and require careful slicer configuration.

Check the bundle, not just the printer name
Manufacturers often sell a printer alone and a “Combo” that includes the automatic material system. Bambu Lab explicitly says the A1 Combo includes AMS Lite. A standard A1 listing is a different product and should not be treated as multicolor-ready at the same price.
For any listing, identify these items before comparing prices:
- The printer itself and its power supply
- The automatic color or material system
- Any hubs, feeders, cables or adapters needed to connect additional units
- Included sample filament, which is useful for setup but not a meaningful part of long-term running cost
- Shipping, sales tax, regional warranty terms and current stock
Anycubic’s $299 Kobra X figure is an official-store snapshot, while the $379 Kobra 4 Combo figure comes from its global catalog. A marketplace listing can show a different bundle or omit the multicolor module. Read the package list at checkout rather than relying on a product photo.
Budget for operating supplies
Multicolor printing uses more filament than a single-color print because the machine must purge residual material during a color change. The amount varies with the model, the number and placement of changes, nozzle size and slicer settings. There is no comparable waste percentage in the cited evidence, so treat filament waste as a variable operating cost rather than assuming a fixed rate.
Keep separate spools of compatible PLA or PETG available for the initial calibration and first projects. Also check the price and availability of replacement nozzles, build plates and the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance parts before committing to an expansion system.

Build volume: match the cube to your projects
Build volume is the maximum printable space inside the machine, not the printer’s external footprint. The A1 Combo provides 256 × 256 × 256 mm, while Anycubic lists 260 × 260 × 260 mm for the Kobra X. The difference is only a few millimeters per axis, but it can decide whether a particular prop, container or replacement part fits in one piece.
Measure the largest model you expect to make in all three dimensions, including supports and any brim. If a part exceeds one axis, you can often split it and join the sections, but that adds seams and post-processing. A slightly larger volume is valuable when you routinely print helmets, tall figurines or functional enclosures; it matters less for miniatures, signs and desk accessories.
Do not substitute external dimensions for usable volume. Leave room around the machine for the moving bed, filament path, ventilation and access to the spool system.

The A1’s open-frame design is well suited to common low-temperature materials. Bambu Lab identifies PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as ideal filaments for the A1. Its guidance marks ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and fiber-reinforced polymers as not recommended, and the company does not recommend enclosing the A1.
That guidance should drive your choice more than a headline speed figure. If your projects center on PLA signs, multicolor toys, display models or flexible parts, an open printer can be a sensible fit. If you need materials that benefit from a stable warm environment—such as many ABS, ASA, nylon or fiber-filled workflows—choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly supports those materials and an appropriate enclosure. Do not assume that adding a tent around an open machine makes it suitable; heat management, electronics, ventilation and manufacturer guidance all matter.
The cited A1 specification lists a maximum toolhead speed of 500 mm/s. That is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise that multicolor models will print at that speed. Color changes, purging, geometry, layer height and acceleration can dominate total print time.
Model-by-model buying advice
Bambu Lab A1 Combo: the easiest complete starting point
The A1 Combo is the lead recommendation when you want a ready-to-use multicolor package below $500 and do not need an enclosed engineering-material platform. The included AMS Lite means the color-changing hardware is part of the bundle rather than an immediate add-on purchase. Its 256 mm cubed build space is large enough for many household parts, figures and educational models.

Its trade-offs are equally clear. One AMS Lite supports at most four colors, so the system is aimed at practical four-color work rather than very large palettes. The open frame and Bambu Lab’s material guidance make it a poor default for buyers whose main workload is ABS, ASA, PC, PA or fiber-reinforced filament. The standard A1 and A1 Combo are separate variants; check the title and included-items list carefully.

- Multicolor 3D Printing: 4 × CFS for up to 16 colors. By hooking up as many as four CFS units together, you are able to print in the splendor of 16 colors. Saves the need for extra painting afterward. Also, K2 offers a build volume of 260 × 260 × 260 mm, able to cover the majority of user scenarios. (* K2 Combo includes K2 and one CFS unit)
- Ultra Quiet Printing: Silent Mode for a quieter printing experience. Annoyed by the buzzing noise? Not K2. By adopting step-servo motors and dynamically balanced fans. It is no louder than someone typing on a laptop PC
- Out-of-the-Box Experience: Pre-assembled for plug and play. You can use K2 right after unpacking and screen installation. Unlocks a wider selection of materials, including PLA/PETG/ABS/PLA-CF/PET
- Smart Auto Leveling & AI Camera: Faster leveling of only the target print area. The leveling sensor only probes and levels the bed area relevant to the desired print. Much faster and more precise. Close watch around the clock, Watch over spaghetti failure, idling, and so on in real-time
- Superior Print Quality: Sturdy frame and precise step-servo motor system. K2 uses 3 step-servo motors, both in the extruder and on the X/Y axis. They can adjust torque dynamically in less than a millisecond, taking the speed, extrusion consistency, print accuracy and noise control to the next level
Anycubic Kobra X: strongest listed value
The Kobra X is the value alternative when the lowest official listed price and a slightly larger stated build cube matter most. Anycubic’s store snapshot lists it at $299, with native four-color printing and an expansion path to 19 colors. That combination can appeal to users who want to start with four colors and add capacity later.
Expansion is not free or automatic. Verify which feeder, hub or color module is included with the exact seller’s package, and calculate the cost and physical space of the additional units before treating “19 colors” as a current capability. The official-store price is a dated snapshot and may differ from marketplace pricing, tax and shipping.
Anycubic Kobra 4 Combo: consider for the stated eight-color path
Anycubic’s official global catalog lists the Kobra 4 Combo at $379 and describes four colors in the base setup with support for up to eight. This makes it worth considering if the stated expansion ceiling is more relevant to you than the Kobra X’s lower listed price.

Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo: choose it for footprint, not maximum part size
The A1 Mini Combo is the small-workspace option in this group. Bambu Lab’s cited page says the Combo includes AMS Lite and supports four-color printing. It makes sense for miniatures, labels and small decorative parts where the reduced build area is acceptable.
The cited U.S. page did not expose enough current Combo price detail to rank it on value, and an A1 Mini product page does not automatically mean AMS Lite is included. Confirm both the build dimensions and the bundle contents before comparing it with the full-size A1 Combo.
Decide which printer fits your workload
Choose the A1 Combo when
- You want the color system included from the start.
- Your projects fit within a 256 mm cube.
- You mainly use PLA, PETG, TPU or PVA.
- You prefer a straightforward four-color workflow over a large expansion project.
Choose the Kobra X when
- The $299 official-store snapshot leaves more of your budget for filament and spare parts.
- You value the listed 260 mm cube.
- You may eventually need more than four colors and accept the cost and complexity of expansion.
- You have confirmed that the exact bundle includes the multicolor hardware you need.
Consider the Kobra 4 Combo when
- The catalog’s stated support for up to eight colors matches your planned models.
- You prefer a bundled option and can verify regional availability at checkout.
- You are willing to confirm details that the global catalog does not provide, including build volume and delivered price.
Choose the A1 Mini Combo when
- Desk space is more important than large parts.
- Your models are small enough for its reduced volume.
- You have confirmed that the listing is the Combo with AMS Lite, not the printer-only variant.
Setup checklist for a first multicolor print
- Confirm the package. Photograph or save the checkout description showing the printer, color system, cables and any required hub.
- Place the machine safely. Provide a rigid, level surface, clearance for moving components and a filament path that does not snag as spools change.
- Install the manufacturer’s current firmware and slicer. Use the profile for the exact printer and color system; do not substitute a base-printer profile for a Combo profile.
- Load and label spools. Assign each color to the correct feeder, check that the filament is dry and confirm the slicer’s material type matches the spool.
- Run calibration and a small test. A two-color sign or simple cube reveals loading, adhesion and purge problems before you spend hours on a large model.
- Inspect the color-change sequence. Preview the tool changes and purge tower in the slicer. Make sure the chosen color order is intentional and that the purge area fits on the build plate.
- Watch the first layer and first change. Confirm adhesion, clean transitions and reliable retraction. Stop early if filament tangles, the nozzle drags or the purge fails.
- Record successful settings. Note filament brand and type, temperatures, plate choice and purge settings so the next project starts from a known baseline.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Buying the base printer instead of the Combo
A product family name can cover several packages. The A1 Combo includes AMS Lite, but the standard A1 does not become a multicolor bundle by implication. The same caution applies to the A1 Mini and to Anycubic listings that show a color module in photos but do not include it in the selected variant.
Treating an advertised maximum as a day-one capability
“Up to 19 colors” for the Kobra X describes an expansion path. It does not mean 19 spools are connected in the $299 base purchase. Count the hardware in the box and price every additional unit required.
Rank #4
- Up to 16 Colors: Bring your designs to life with vibrant multi-color/multi-material printing capabilities, perfect for showcasing your creativity. Note: Connecting Bambu Lab AMS is required.
- 500mm/s and 20000 mm/s² Acceleration True High Speed: Don't wait around for your masterpieces. Lightning-fast printing speed lets you focus on creating, not waiting.
- Enclosed Design: Fully enclosed body improves print performance for advanced filaments. Automatic Bed Leveling: Say hello to high-quality, successful prints. Auto bed leveling makes 3D printing such an easy thing.
- Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
Ignoring purge material and print time
Frequent color changes create purge waste and extend the job. Grouping same-color regions, reducing unnecessary swaps and choosing sensible layer and purge settings can make a model more practical. Because waste depends on the design and slicer, compare your own test prints rather than relying on a universal percentage.
Using enclosure assumptions to justify unsuitable materials
An enclosure is not a universal upgrade. For the A1, Bambu Lab specifically does not recommend enclosing the printer and marks several engineering materials as not recommended. Select a machine whose manufacturer supports the material and thermal environment you require.
Comparing a retail snapshot with a delivered total
Official-store prices can change between the day you read an article and the day you order. Taxes, shipping, regional stock and bundle selection can all change the final amount. Treat the figures in this guide as dated reference points and verify checkout.
Recommended Free Tools
Is spending up to $500 worthwhile instead of $200?
For multicolor printing, the extra budget is usually buying the color-management hardware, a larger or more capable platform and fewer immediate add-on decisions—not simply a faster base machine. A $200 printer that requires a separate feeder, hub and additional calibration can exceed the price difference quickly. Conversely, if you only need single-color parts, spending up to $500 for a color system you will not use is difficult to justify.
Make the comparison using a complete working setup: printer, color hardware, first spools, replacement parts and the time you are willing to spend tuning it. The A1 Combo’s value is its included AMS Lite and complete workflow; the Kobra X’s value is its low listed entry price and stated expansion path. Neither is automatically the better purchase for every project.
Do you need an enclosed printer under $500?
No, not for every multicolor project. An open printer can be appropriate for PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA, which Bambu Lab lists as ideal for the A1. You should prioritize an enclosed or manufacturer-approved platform when your materials require controlled temperature, reduced drafts or safer management of fumes and particles. Decide from the filament technical requirements and the manufacturer’s guidance, not from the color count alone.
Final buying checklist
- Is the listing the exact Combo or color-equipped variant?
- Does the usable build volume fit your largest planned model?
- How many colors are included today, and what hardware is needed for expansion?
- Are your intended filaments supported by the manufacturer?
- Have you accounted for purge filament, spare parts, tax and shipping?
- Is the price a dated regional snapshot or a current delivered total?
- Can you provide the required clearance, ventilation and spool space?
For most first-time buyers who want multicolor immediately, the A1 Combo is the balanced choice under the stated cap. The Kobra X is the sharper value proposition when its $299 listing is available and its expansion path matches your plans. The Kobra 4 Combo and A1 Mini Combo serve narrower needs: a specified eight-color path in the former case, and a smaller footprint in the latter.
