Nintendo Switch Sports is the best all-around starting point if you want several sports built around Joy-Con motion controls. Choose Mario Tennis Aces if tennis is the main attraction and you want an optional motion-based Swing Mode. Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise is a related exercise game, rather than a substitute for a multi-sport collection.
Which motion-controlled Switch sports game should you choose?
| Game | Best for | Motion-control role | Play options and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Families, groups, and players who want a variety of sports in one game | Joy-Con motion controls are central to play across its sports; Nintendo describes bowling curve and tennis spin. | Local and online play. Online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, Nintendo Account, and internet access; availability varies by country. Some Soccer play uses a Leg Strap. |
| Mario Tennis Aces | Players chiefly interested in tennis | Optional Swing Mode lets you use a Joy-Con like a tennis racket; standard tennis play is also available. | Includes Adventure mode, local play, and online tournaments. Nintendo’s product page identifies these modes but does not establish comparative tracking or responsiveness. |
| Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise | Players looking for a motion-based exercise game | Grip Joy-Con controllers to punch and duck or weave. | A related fitness option, not a direct multi-sport alternative. Nintendo’s cited feature description does not establish comparable sports or play-mode details. |
Why Nintendo Switch Sports is the best all-around pick
Nintendo Switch Sports brings together eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara (swordplay). Nintendo describes motion effects including curving a bowling ball and adding spin to a tennis shot. Its sports guide explains the basic interactions for Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara.

That range makes it the clearest choice when different players want different activities without buying separate games. It supports local play as well as online competition and play with friends. For online play, Nintendo lists a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access as requirements; availability may vary by country. Local play does not require an online membership.
Choose Mario Tennis Aces for a tennis-first experience
Mario Tennis Aces is a focused alternative if you mainly want tennis. Its Swing Mode uses a Joy-Con like a racket, while the game also offers standard tennis play. Nintendo lists Adventure mode, local play, and online tournaments. The available product information supports those feature distinctions, but not claims that Swing Mode is more accurate, responsive, or comfortable than another game’s controls.

Consider Fitness Boxing 2 for motion-based exercise
Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise uses Joy-Con controllers for punches and ducking or weaving. It suits a reader who wants a guided exercise-game experience, but it is not a collection of sports in the same sense as Nintendo Switch Sports.
Check controllers, modes, and accessories before buying
Use a supported play setup
Nintendo Support says controller configurations for Nintendo Switch Sports depend on the selected sport. The game does not support Handheld Mode, and Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best experience. Check the Nintendo Switch Sports support FAQ for the mode and controller details relevant to your setup.

Check Leg Strap compatibility for Soccer
Some Soccer gameplay uses the Leg Strap. Nintendo Support explains how to select Leg-Strap Mode and states that Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. Confirm the controller generation and the particular Soccer mode you intend to play before buying or recommending the accessory.
Plan separately for online play
Online play in Nintendo Switch Sports requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access, and online availability can vary by country. This requirement applies to online play, not local play.

Nintendo advises: “Be aware of your surroundings. Wear wrist straps and allow adequate room around you during game play.” Clear the space around each player before starting, and use the wrist straps supplied for the controllers.

- Pick Nintendo Switch Sports for the broadest verified range of motion-based sports and group variety.
- Pick Mario Tennis Aces if tennis is the priority and you want a dedicated Swing Mode alongside standard play.
- Pick Fitness Boxing 2 if your goal is motion-based exercise rather than a sports collection.
These recommendations compare documented sports, motion-control features, and play modes. They do not rank tracking quality, responsiveness, comfort, or durability: the cited Nintendo materials do not provide comparative measurements or hands-on test results. The shortlist is practical rather than an exhaustive catalogue of every third-party Switch sports game.
