There is no single official “best settings” preset for Modern Warfare 4. The strongest competitive baseline is to prioritize stable frame pacing, readable targets, clear directional audio, and a controller setup that does not drift or strain your hands. On PC, start with the Balanced graphics preset, then test shadow, terrain, filtering, and detail quality on your own system. Use a headphones/stereo audio mix with music removed, and begin controller tuning with Tactical layout, aim assist enabled, trigger effects disabled, and deadzones set just high enough to stop unwanted movement.
These are starting points, not universal values. Your platform, display resolution and refresh rate, controller wear, hearing preferences, and network environment all change the result. Test one adjustment at a time in the mode you actually play and keep a record so a patch or hardware change does not force you to guess.
Is there one best Modern Warfare 4 competitive settings preset?
No. Activision documents the available graphics and visibility controls, but it does not publish one universal competitive preset for every PC, console, display, or controller. Third-party guides provide useful starting points, while your own frame-time consistency, target visibility, stick condition, and audio equipment determine the final settings.
A competitive setup should optimize four outcomes in this order:
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Consistent response: stable frame pacing and predictable input are more useful than a high average frame-rate that repeatedly stutters.
- Readable targets: shadows, depth-of-field effects, muzzle effects, and field of view should help you identify opponents rather than obscure them.
- Information-rich sound: footsteps and gameplay effects need separation from music, dialogue, and voice chat.
- Repeatable control: sensitivity and deadzones should let you make the same small and large movements without drift or fatigue.
A competitive-settings guide updated October 23, 2026 reports that Activision’s September 29 PC blog described more than 800 customization options. Treat that figure as a secondary report of an Activision statement, and verify the current official page if you need the exact count. The practical implication is simple: copying another player’s entire menu is less reliable than building a controlled baseline.
What should you record before changing settings?
Write down your current setup before changing anything. Without a baseline, you cannot tell whether a visual change improved your low frame-rate, whether a deadzone change caused drift, or whether an audio adjustment merely made the game louder.
Record the platform and display
- Platform and input method: PC with controller, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Display resolution, refresh capability, and whether variable refresh is enabled.
- Graphics preset and the individual settings you changed.
- Average frame-rate if available, plus frame-time consistency or 1% low data.
- Controller layout, sensitivity, aim-assist state, trigger effects, and deadzone values.
- Audio mix, output mode, music/dialogue/effects levels, and microphone mode.
Activision’s May 28, 2026 release announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with an October 23, 2026 release date. That date has passed, but editions and live platform listings can change; check the current store listing for your region before assuming a feature or performance mode is available.

Campaign scenes can expose visual load, but they do not reproduce every multiplayer map, player count, or effect combination. Test in a repeatable private match, firing range, or the closest practice environment available, then confirm the result in your normal competitive playlist. Keep the same resolution, map, and display mode while comparing two settings.
Which graphics settings are best for competitive play on PC?
Start with Balanced if your PC is mid-range, then tune the settings that affect frame-time spikes and visual clutter. Activision’s official PC announcement describes Enhanced FOV, dynamic muzzle-effect masking at the point of aim, separate World and Weapon Depth of Field controls, and expanded graphics options. Those are capabilities, not promises of higher frame-rate or better aim.
Use Balanced as a measured starting point
PC Gamer tested Modern Warfare 4 on a 1440p display with a Radeon RX 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM. Its repeatable 30-second runs took place in Campaign Mission 4. The results below apply to that system and test—not to every PC and not to multiplayer.

| Preset or adjustment | Average FPS | 1% low | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 146 | 119 | Fastest result in this test, with the lowest visual quality. |
| Basic | 137 | 114 | Small performance step below Minimum in this run. |
| Balanced | 133 | 109 | PC Gamer’s simple starting point for mid-range systems. |
| Ultra | 107 | 85 | Higher image quality with a substantial performance cost in this test. |
| Extreme | 97 | 75 | Lowest result among the tested presets. |
| Ultra with four quality options lowered | 124 | 101 | PC Gamer’s tuned result after reducing selected quality settings. |
PC Gamer specifically identified shadow quality, shadow filtering, terrain quality, and possibly detail quality as useful reductions from Ultra. Lowering detail quality can make some trees appear blocky, so inspect the sightlines you use rather than assuming the lowest option is best. The test demonstrates the trade-off; it does not establish a universal multiplier for your graphics card.

Set resolution and frame pacing before visual extras
- Match output resolution to the display. Avoid rendering a resolution your system cannot sustain merely to preserve a sharper screenshot.
- Choose a stable target. A lower, steady frame-rate is usually easier to aim with than a higher average that drops sharply during effects.
- Start at Balanced. Play the same short route or drill and note average performance, severe dips, and whether distant targets remain readable.
- Lower one setting at a time. Test shadow quality, shadow filtering, terrain quality, and detail quality separately before changing another option.
- Check low-frame behavior. If average FPS rises but your lows or frame pacing worsen, revert the change.
- Inspect image artifacts. Blocky foliage, shimmering surfaces, or overly dark corners can cost more visibility than the extra frames are worth.
Do not confuse an official feature with a competitive guarantee
Enhanced FOV is exclusive to PC according to Activision’s announcement. It uses lens effects to expand peripheral field of view without changing the center FOV. That can alter how much you see at the edges, but Activision does not state that it improves frame-rate, aim assist, or win rate. Evaluate it for target readability and motion comfort on your display.
How should you set FOV and depth of field?
Choose the widest view that keeps targets identifiable on your actual screen, rather than selecting an extreme value because it is popular. A very wide view can make distant opponents appear smaller, while a narrow view can limit peripheral awareness. The MW4 Field Manual advises prioritizing readable shadows and avoiding an FOV that makes targets too small.
Test FOV with a fixed drill
- Stand at the same distance from several targets or landmarks.
- Use one FOV for a complete drill, recording whether you lose peripheral information or struggle to see small targets.
- Change only the FOV and repeat the drill at the same resolution and display distance.
- Keep the value that gives you reliable target recognition without eye strain or excessive visual distortion.
On PC, Enhanced FOV and the ordinary FOV control are related but not identical: Enhanced FOV uses a lens effect to widen peripheral view while preserving the center FOV. Compare the feature in the game mode you play, because a setting that feels useful in close-quarters movement may make long-range identification harder.
Separate World and Weapon Depth of Field
Activision documents independent World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field controls. Change them separately so you know which blur affects distant scenery and which affects the weapon model. If a blurred foreground or background hides a target during your drill, reduce that specific effect and verify that the image remains comfortable during rapid movement.
Evaluate muzzle-effect masking at the point of aim
The official PC description also covers dynamic masking of muzzle effects at the point of aim. Because this is a visibility feature rather than a stated performance boost, compare it by tracking a target through repeated shots. Keep it enabled only if the result improves your sight picture without creating distracting transitions.

What are the best audio settings to hear footsteps?
A current Dexerto guide’s starting mix is Headphones for Audio Mix, Stereo output, Effects Volume at 100, Gameplay Music at 0, Dialogue at 30, and Reduce Tinnitus Sound enabled. These are editorial recommendations, not official Activision values. Your headset, hearing profile, team-chat volume, and room noise may require different levels.
| Audio control | Starting value from the guide | Why you may change it |
|---|---|---|
| Audio Mix | Headphones | Use the output type that matches your actual listening device. |
| Output | Stereo | Keep it matched to the device and operating-system output path. |
| Effects Volume | 100 | Reduce it if loud effects mask quieter cues or cause fatigue. |
| Gameplay Music | 0 | Removing music leaves more room for positional information. |
| Dialogue | 30 | Raise it if callouts are useful; lower it if scripted speech masks combat sounds. |
| Reduce Tinnitus Sound | Enabled | Keep it enabled if the effect is uncomfortable or fatiguing. |
Set the microphone separately from game audio
Use the in-game microphone test to set your level, then choose push-to-talk if open-mic noise distracts your squad. Confirm that your voice-chat output does not overpower effects. Ask teammates whether your voice is clipped, quiet, or constantly transmitting; that feedback is more useful than a menu value copied from another player.
Make a controlled footsteps test
- Use the same headphones and volume position for every comparison.
- Have a teammate move at a known distance while you face away from the visual cue.
- Compare the baseline mix with one change, such as lower dialogue or a different output mode.
- Repeat while firing or moving so you can judge whether the cue remains audible under normal combat noise.
The sources do not test a particular headset or show that an expensive model improves competitive performance. Ordinary stereo gaming headphones are a relevant accessory category because the guide’s baseline explicitly specifies headphones and stereo output, but comfort, fit, and consistent left-right imaging matter more than a brand name.

Use controller recommendations as tuning points, not laws. A current Dot Esports guide suggests the Tactical button layout, Target Aim Assist enabled, Trigger Effects disabled, and deadzones adjusted to stop stick drift. No reviewed source establishes an official competitive sensitivity value or a universally best controller model.
Start with layout, assist, and trigger behavior
- Tactical layout: Try it if moving, crouching, and sliding while keeping your thumb on the aim stick feels more natural. Keep another layout if Tactical creates mistakes or hand strain.
- Target Aim Assist: Leave it enabled while evaluating the game’s intended controller behavior. Do not assume that changing unrelated assist options will improve every weapon class.
- Trigger Effects: Disable them if resistance slows repeated firing or causes fatigue. Keep them enabled if the feedback helps you control single shots and does not interfere with timing.
Choose sensitivity by control, not a copied number
The reviewed sources contain no official competitive sensitivity value. Start at a level where you can turn quickly enough for close fights while still stopping on a small target. Then change one sensitivity axis by one increment and repeat the same target-switching drill. If you overshoot consistently, lower it; if you cannot complete a turn without lifting your thumb repeatedly, raise it. Recheck horizontal and vertical behavior independently rather than assuming they should be identical.
Set deadzones to the lowest drift-free point
A lower deadzone can make a stick feel more immediate, but worn hardware may report movement when you are not touching it. Raise the minimum deadzone until the on-screen reticle and character stop moving on their own, then test again after the controller warms up during a session.

- Place the controller on a flat surface and release both sticks.
- Watch for camera rotation, menu movement, or character motion without input.
- Lower the affected stick’s deadzone one step at a time until drift appears.
- Raise it one step, then perform slow tracking, a rapid turn, and a stationary aim drill.
- Save the lowest setting that remains stable throughout all three tests.
Do not force identical deadzones on both sticks if only one is worn. A comfortable, drift-free setting is more valuable than a theoretically faster response that moves the reticle while you are holding an angle.

- Track a moving target for several seconds without firing.
- Snap between two fixed targets and count overshoots.

- Repeat while strafing and while crouching or sliding.
Record misses caused by overshooting, slow turns, drift, or accidental button presses. This identifies the problem more accurately than a single good match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do graphics, audio, and controller choices differ by platform?
PC offers the broadest documented graphics control, including Enhanced FOV and separate world and weapon depth-of-field options. Console and Switch 2 players should use the options exposed by their current build and display rather than expecting every PC control to appear. The release announcement covers all four platforms, but it does not establish identical menus, frame-rate targets, or feature parity.
PC
Use the display’s native resolution when your hardware can sustain it, begin with Balanced, and measure low-frame behavior. If you lower quality from Ultra, test shadow quality, shadow filtering, terrain, and detail separately. Keep a record of driver version and game patch so a performance change can be traced.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
Prioritize the console display mode that gives stable response and readable targets. If the game offers multiple visual modes, compare them in the same practice scenario rather than judging from a menu preview. Controller deadzone and trigger settings still require individual testing because console hardware wear varies.
Nintendo Switch 2
Confirm the current game edition, resolution behavior, and available graphics controls in the live listing and in-game menus. Do not transfer PC expectations about Enhanced FOV or detailed quality sliders unless the Switch 2 build actually exposes them.

How do you lock in settings and recheck them after patches?
Once a setup feels good, save a short record outside the game. Include the date, patch, platform, display, graphics preset, audio mix, controller layout, sensitivity, and deadzones. This makes troubleshooting possible if an update resets options or changes frame pacing.
- Capture a screenshot of each relevant settings page.
- Write down one performance observation, one visibility observation, one audio observation, and one control observation.
- Play several matches without changing anything so you are evaluating a setup rather than a single encounter.
- After a patch, check for reset options, new graphics controls, altered audio balance, and changed controller behavior.
- Retest only the affected category first; avoid rebuilding every setting at once.
The MW4 Field Manual recommends recording platform and display details, prioritizing stable frame pacing and readable shadows, and avoiding an FOV that makes targets too small. Those principles are useful even when a launch update or platform-specific menu changes the exact labels.
What should you do when a competitive setting causes a problem?
| Symptom | Likely cause | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| High average FPS but hitching during fights | Unstable frame pacing or a setting that causes spikes | Return to the previous preset, then lower one heavy quality option and compare the lows. |
| Targets disappear in foliage or dark areas | Terrain, detail, shadow, or display adjustments reduce contrast | Restore the last readable option and test shadow or terrain changes separately. |
| Wide view feels fast but distant enemies are tiny | FOV is too wide for the display distance | Reduce FOV one step and repeat the fixed target drill. |
| Gunfire drowns out footsteps | Effects are too loud for the room, or the mix does not match the device | Keep the headphones/stereo baseline, then lower effects slightly and retest under combat noise. |
| Reticle moves while the stick is untouched | Deadzone is below the controller’s drift threshold | Raise that stick’s minimum deadzone until movement stops. |
| Aim feels slow after disabling trigger effects | Muscle memory changed, or sensitivity is too low for the new trigger feel | Run the same tracking and snap drills before changing multiple controls. |
| Teammates hear room noise or clipped speech | Open microphone level or incorrect input gain | Use the in-game microphone test and switch to push-to-talk. |
What is the practical competitive baseline?
For PC, begin at Balanced, preserve the resolution your system can sustain, and tune shadow, filtering, terrain, and detail quality against frame pacing and target readability. Test Enhanced FOV and the separate depth-of-field controls rather than assuming either is automatically superior. For audio, start with Headphones, Stereo, effects 100, gameplay music 0, dialogue 30, and Reduce Tinnitus Sound enabled, then adapt to your hearing and team mix. For a controller, try Tactical, Target Aim Assist on, Trigger Effects off, and the lowest drift-free deadzones; choose sensitivity through repeatable drills instead of copying an unexplained number.

Do I need a high-end gaming headset to hear footsteps in Modern Warfare 4?
No tested headset model is established as necessary. A comfortable stereo pair that fits correctly and produces consistent left-right imaging is enough to evaluate the recommended mix; room noise and excessive volume can matter more than price.
Should I copy a professional player’s sensitivity settings?
Use another player’s values only as an experiment. The reviewed sources do not establish an official sensitivity number, and hand size, controller wear, display distance, and stick response can make the same value feel entirely different.
Does Enhanced FOV increase FPS on PC?
Activision describes Enhanced FOV as a lens effect that expands peripheral view without changing center FOV. The announcement does not promise a performance gain, so measure frame pacing and target clarity on your own system.
What should I check first after a game update?
Verify that your graphics preset, audio mix, controller layout, deadzones, and FOV were not reset. Then repeat one short aim drill and one audio check before changing values, so you can separate a reset from a genuine balance or performance change.
