The best mini PC for local AI is the one that can fit your intended model and context with enough memory left for the operating system and runtime—and can sustain the workload your software supports. Start with the model size, then compare memory capacity and type, graphics compatibility, storage, and evidence of sustained cooling. Two compact systems with 128GB configurations are documented here, but published specifications alone do not establish which runs a particular model fastest.

Start with the AI workload, not the processor name

“Local AI” can mean running a small language model for occasional questions, serving a larger model with a long context, or experimenting with image and other generative workloads. Those tasks do not impose identical demands. For language-model inference, the first practical question is whether the model, its runtime allocations, and the context you want to use can fit in memory. The next is whether the graphics hardware is supported by your chosen model runner. Cooling matters if the computer must sustain work rather than handle brief bursts.

That makes a processor label or a TOPS figure an incomplete shortcut. Neither, by itself, tells you how much memory is available to the model, how efficiently your software uses the graphics hardware, or whether the machine sustains performance under a long workload. Treat each as one specification among several, not as a stand-alone answer to “best.”

Define the model and context you want to run

  • Write down the model family and parameter size you have in mind, such as 7B, 13B, 34B, or 70B.
  • Decide whether you need a short conversational context or a substantially longer one. Context length affects memory use.
  • Identify the specific model runner and backend you expect to use. Confirm support for the mini PC’s graphics hardware and the model format before buying.
  • Consider whether you will run other applications or services at the same time; they also need system memory.

These checks narrow the field more reliably than starting with a “best mini PC” ranking. A system can have an impressive headline specification and still be a poor match if your model does not fit comfortably or your chosen runtime does not use its graphics effectively.

How much memory does local AI need?

Memory capacity sets a practical ceiling on which model configurations you can load, but a model’s weight files are only part of the total. As a planning estimate, iTechGuides’ October 20, 2026 sizing guide puts 4-bit weights at roughly half a byte per parameter before overhead. It gives these approximate weight-only figures:

Model size Approximate 4-bit weight storage What the figure does—and does not—include
7B About 3.5GB Weights only, before quantization metadata, runtime allocations, context/KV cache, the operating system, and other applications. Estimate from iTechGuides, October 20, 2026.
13B About 6.5GB Weights only, before the additional memory demands listed above. Estimate from iTechGuides, October 20, 2026.
34B About 17GB Weights only, before the additional memory demands listed above. Estimate from iTechGuides, October 20, 2026.
70B About 35GB Weights only, before the additional memory demands listed above. Estimate from iTechGuides, October 20, 2026.

These are sizing estimates, not guaranteed minimum system requirements. Quantization details, runtime behavior, context length, and software configuration can change actual use. A system whose nominal memory just matches a weight estimate may not have enough available for a useful inference session. Leave headroom rather than treating the table as a pass/fail compatibility chart.

Why context and runtime headroom matter

During inference, the model runner needs working memory in addition to stored model weights. The context—the conversation or input the model can consider—also has a memory cost, including the key-value cache (KV cache). Longer contexts can therefore push a setup beyond what a weight-only estimate suggests. The operating system, background services, and other open applications compete for the same finite pool on a shared-memory system.

If your intended use is still uncertain, choose capacity around the largest model and context you realistically expect to use, with room for the runtime and ordinary desktop use. If the memory is soldered or otherwise non-upgradeable, a conservative initial choice matters more than it would on a system with replaceable memory.

Unified memory or discrete GPU memory?

These are different approaches, not interchangeable labels. A unified-memory design exposes a shared pool to the CPU and graphics. A discrete graphics card has dedicated video memory (VRAM). Each may suit a different combination of model size, software, and workload.

Buying path What to check Trade-off to consider
Unified memory Total installed capacity, how much can be allocated to graphics, memory bandwidth, and whether the specific model runner supports the integrated graphics. A large shared pool can be useful when the model needs substantial memory, but the amount available to the model is not necessarily the full installed capacity: the OS and other work also use it.
Discrete GPU with dedicated VRAM VRAM capacity, bandwidth for the exact configuration, GPU support in the intended runtime, and the physical or external expansion arrangement. Dedicated VRAM and a supported GPU software stack can be attractive for compatible workloads. Compare actual capacity and software fit rather than assuming the architecture is automatically faster or better.

A comparison guide updated October 21, 2026 uses capacity, bandwidth, and software ecosystem to compare 128GB unified-memory Ryzen AI Max+ 395 systems with NVIDIA DGX Spark and Mac mini configurations. Those are useful comparison axes, not a guarantee that every configuration remains available or that one architecture wins every workload. The guide identifies CUDA, ROCm/Vulkan, and Metal/MLX as ecosystem distinctions among the systems it compares. Verify current support for your exact model, runner, and backend; an ecosystem name alone does not establish compatibility or speed.

Compare bandwidth without treating it as a benchmark

Memory bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors under specified conditions. It can affect throughput, but it does not by itself predict end-to-end performance in a particular application. Compare the manufacturer’s bandwidth specification for the exact configuration, then treat it as one factor alongside memory capacity, supported software, and independent results for the workload you care about. The available product specifications here do not establish comparable application performance across the listed mini PCs.

Two documented 128GB compact candidates

The following examples show what to inspect in a high-capacity compact system. Their specifications are manufacturer statements, not independent evidence that a particular local model runs at a particular speed. No directly comparable benchmark, temperature, noise, or throttling results are established here, so neither can be declared the overall performance winner.

System Memory and graphics listed Cooling and expansion listed What the specifications establish
GMKtec EVO-X3 Ryzen AI Max+ 395; Radeon 8060S; 128GB onboard LPDDR5X-8000. Three cooling fans and three heat pipes; two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots; OCuLink. The memory is described as non-upgradeable. GMKtec’s product page, accessed October 25, 2026, lists these configuration and design details. It does not establish comparative sustained performance.
MSI PRO MAX EDGE AI+ Ryzen AI Max+ 395; Radeon 8060S; up to 128GB LPDDR5X unified memory; up to 96GB allocatable to graphics. MSI describes a triple-fan cooling design. Its August 30, 2026 announcement, published September 28, 2026, identifies the desktop as a 4-liter system. MSI’s product information and announcement are vendor statements. “Up to” describes a maximum listed configuration, not proof that every retail configuration has it or that it delivers a particular model speed.

These systems illustrate a compact, high-capacity unified-memory route. The matching Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Radeon 8060S labels do not, on their own, prove equal behavior: the exact memory configuration, firmware and software, workload, and cooling under sustained load all matter. Check the precise configuration being sold rather than assuming every version carries the maximum memory or graphics allocation.

What the EVO-X3’s memory and slots mean for a buyer

GMKtec describes the EVO-X3’s 128GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory as onboard and non-upgradeable. If you select this system, decide on memory capacity at purchase; adding an internal M.2 drive is not a way to increase the memory available to load a model. The listed pair of M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots gives you an internal storage expansion path for model files, subject to checking compatibility with the exact configuration and drive.

How to evaluate graphics and AI software support

Graphics hardware only helps when the software path you intend to use can take advantage of it. Before choosing an integrated GPU or discrete GPU, check the current documentation for your model runner, backend, operating system, and model format. Confirm support for the specific graphics device—not just for a broad vendor ecosystem—and look for evidence tied to the workload you plan to run.

  1. Name the software first. Identify the model runner and version you plan to use, along with the model and quantization format.
  2. Check its supported backend. Look for explicit support for the system’s graphics hardware and operating system. The terms CUDA, ROCm/Vulkan, and Metal/MLX identify different software ecosystems; they are not interchangeable promises of compatibility.
  3. Confirm memory behavior. Determine whether the runner can place the model and relevant allocations in the system’s shared memory or the GPU’s dedicated VRAM, and whether your intended context fits.
  4. Look for workload-matched results. When independent results are available, prefer tests using the same model family, quantization, context, and software path. A score from a different workload may not answer your question.
  5. Check the exact configuration and availability. Retail versions can differ from a manufacturer’s maximum specification. Verify installed memory, storage, and software support for the system actually offered.

If you cannot verify that your intended runner uses the graphics hardware, do not buy on the assumption that a high graphics specification will automatically accelerate local inference. A clearly supported, sufficiently large memory configuration is a more defensible match than an impressive but unverified label.

Cooling: fan count is not sustained-load evidence

Local inference can involve extended periods of work. A cooling design’s existence is relevant, but a fan count or heat-pipe count does not tell you the temperatures, noise, or clock behavior under a sustained model workload. The EVO-X3 specification lists three fans and three heat pipes; MSI describes a triple-fan system. Those details establish the manufacturers’ stated designs, not which system runs cooler or quieter.

For a meaningful comparison, look for independent tests that report sustained-load temperatures, noise, and throttling under comparable conditions. Short burst benchmarks and isolated specification claims cannot substitute for those measurements. The available information does not provide a comparable cross-device thermal test for these two systems, so no temperature, noise, or throttling winner can be named.

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.

What to do when thermal evidence is missing

  • Check whether an independent review reports sustained rather than momentary load behavior, and whether its workload resembles local inference.
  • Look for both noise and temperature: a machine can keep components cool by running fans loudly, and a temperature without the test conditions is hard to interpret.
  • Distinguish a manufacturer’s cooling description from a measured result. Treat “triple fan” or “three heat pipes” as design information only.
  • If you already own a system, monitor its behavior during a representative session and keep its vents unobstructed. Do not infer thermal capacity from a short idle or burst test.

Storage, configuration, and buying checks

Model files can occupy substantial storage, and the system also needs room for the operating system, applications, and other data. Check the included drive capacity and the available expansion before purchase. For the EVO-X3, GMKtec lists two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots; verify that the specific drive and configuration you plan to use are compatible. No exact SSD capacity or universal drive compatibility is established by the listed slot specification alone.

Compare complete configurations, not bare model names. Installed memory, SSD capacity, operating system, power requirements, and current availability affect the system you actually receive. Prices and stock are volatile; the manufacturer page displayed a price when accessed October 25, 2026, but that does not establish a current or recurring price. Check current listings directly and compare like for like.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Model fit: Estimate weight memory for your chosen model and quantization, then leave room for runtime allocations, context/KV cache, the OS, and other applications.
  • Memory type and upgrade path: Distinguish unified memory from dedicated VRAM, check the exact installed capacity, and establish whether memory can be upgraded.
  • Graphics support: Confirm that the intended runner and backend support the specific GPU and model format.
  • Cooling evidence: Seek comparable sustained-load temperature, noise, and throttling measurements; do not use fan count as a proxy.
  • Storage and expansion: Check slot type and count, drive compatibility, and any external expansion interface you expect to use.
  • Complete configuration: Confirm memory, SSD, operating system, power, regional availability, and current price for the exact unit.

Which mini PC should you choose?

Choose around a larger shared memory pool when model capacity is your priority

A documented 128GB unified-memory configuration can be relevant if you want to explore larger models on a compact system and your software supports the graphics path. The EVO-X3 is one concrete example, with 128GB onboard LPDDR5X-8000, Radeon 8060S graphics, and non-upgradeable memory. MSI lists the PRO MAX EDGE AI+ with up to 128GB unified memory and up to 96GB allocatable to graphics. These are candidates to investigate, not performance recommendations: verify the available configuration and the software path before purchase.

Choose a discrete-GPU route when its software and VRAM fit your workload

A discrete GPU can be a sensible alternative when the desired model runner supports its ecosystem and its dedicated VRAM meets the workload. Compare the actual VRAM capacity, memory bandwidth, form factor or expansion needs, and total configuration. The comparison guide’s coverage of DGX Spark and Mac mini configurations gives readers additional architecture examples, but current configurations and prices can change. The provided product information does not support declaring one of those systems faster or better value for your particular model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for better evidence if sustained performance or noise is decisive

If you need a quiet machine or plan long inference sessions, prioritize systems with independent, comparable thermal measurements. The listed fan and heat-pipe designs can help you identify what manufacturers claim to have built, but they do not answer how a system behaves during hours of work. Where comparable measurements are absent, make that uncertainty part of the decision rather than assuming a cooling design guarantees a result.

Bottom line

For local AI, buy for the model and context you intend to run: estimate memory use, reserve runtime headroom, verify the graphics backend, and check storage and upgradeability. The 128GB GMKtec EVO-X3 and MSI PRO MAX EDGE AI+ are documented compact options, but their specifications do not establish a speed or thermal winner. Match the exact configuration to your software and look for workload-specific, sustained results before treating any mini PC as the best choice.
