The best Malwarebytes alternative depends on whether you need an antivirus that protects continuously or a tool to scan a device after a suspected infection. For Windows users seeking built-in, ongoing protection, Microsoft Defender is the simplest starting point. For a separate antivirus, compare Bitdefender, Norton and ESET; for a persistent infection on Windows, Microsoft Defender Offline is a useful built-in scan option.
Choose by the job you need done
Malwarebytes Free and a full-time antivirus are not interchangeable. TechRadar’s 2026 guide describes Malwarebytes Free as focused on manual malware removal, without real-time protection. Its paid offering is different, so check the edition rather than assuming all Malwarebytes products work the same way. TechRadar’s free malware-removal guide and Malwarebytes’ product information provide context on the distinction.
- Need ongoing protection? Compare antivirus products with real-time monitoring.
- Need a second-opinion on-demand scanner? Look for a removal tool that scans when you run it; do not treat that alone as a replacement for real-time protection.
- Suspect a persistent infection on Windows? Consider Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans after the device restarts.
Best alternatives by use case
Microsoft Defender Antivirus: built-in Windows protection
For Windows users who want ongoing protection without installing a separate antivirus, Microsoft Defender is already part of Windows Security. Microsoft documents real-time monitoring and quick and custom scans. Its real-time protection continuously monitors for potential threats, including viruses, malware and spyware. Microsoft’s Windows Security documentation explains the available protections and scans.
Microsoft Defender Offline: a Windows cleanup option
If malware may be hiding while Windows is running, Defender Offline runs after a restart, using the latest definitions without loading Windows. This can make it harder for persistent malware to hide, but it is not a guarantee that every infection will be removed. It is a scan feature, not a separate antivirus subscription. See Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance for details.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free: free ongoing protection
TechRadar’s 2026 free-tool guide describes Bitdefender Antivirus Free as offering real-time detection and web protection. That makes it a closer fit than a removal-only scanner for someone looking for a free antivirus alternative. Confirm the edition and its availability in your region before installing, since product names and availability can change. TechRadar’s guide covers the free edition.
Bitdefender Total Security: a paid suite to compare
TechRadar names Bitdefender its overall recommendation for most readers in its 2026 antivirus guide. Bitdefender Total Security is a distinct product from Bitdefender Antivirus Free; it was included as version 27.0 in AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Windows malware-protection test. A review recommendation and a test listing answer different questions: the former is an editorial judgment, while the latter identifies a product/version included in a particular test. TechRadar’s antivirus guide and AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 test describe those separate evidence sources.
Norton 360 Deluxe: consider it for family features
TechRadar highlights Norton 360 Deluxe for families, particularly its parental controls. Feature availability and plan details can differ by region, so verify the offer for your location rather than assuming every plan includes identical features. TechRadar’s 2026 antivirus guide gives its recommendation context.

ESET HOME Security Essential: another tested option
ESET HOME Security Essential is a further product to compare if you want a separate suite. AV-Comparatives listed version 19.0 in its March 2026 malware-protection test. That inclusion establishes that the version was tested; it does not, by itself, show how it ranked or whether it is the best fit for your devices. See the test’s product list and scope.
What the independent test does—and does not—tell you
AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Malware Protection Test used a consistent set of 10,000 samples, a size it says it maintains starting in 2026. The test ran at the beginning of March on a fully updated 64-bit Windows 11 system, with default settings and the latest product updates then available. It is evidence about malware protection under that test’s conditions, not a universal ranking for every operating system, product edition or use case. Read the test report and its consumer test information.
The March 2026 product list included Bitdefender Total Security 27.0, ESET HOME Security Essential 19.0, Malwarebytes Premium 5.5, Microsoft Defender Antivirus 4.18 and Norton Antivirus Plus 26.2. These are the named editions and versions in that report, not a performance ranking. Norton Antivirus Plus in the test is not the same named product as Norton 360 Deluxe highlighted for family features.

AV-Comparatives advises readers to consider price, ease of use, compatibility and support, and to consult more than one recent test report rather than choosing from one test or test type alone. Its 2026 security survey lists twelve manufacturers most commonly used among its survey participants for Windows anti-malware products; that describes the survey group, not global market share. AV-Comparatives’ consumer resources explain its testing and survey context.

- Decide between prevention and cleanup. For continuous defense, prioritize real-time antivirus. For a suspected infection, an on-demand scanner or offline scan may be more relevant.
- Check device and operating-system support. The cited March 2026 independent test is specifically for updated 64-bit Windows 11; do not assume those findings apply to macOS, mobile devices or other Windows versions.
- Compare the exact edition. Free and paid products can differ in real-time protection, web protection and included features. Match the edition you plan to install to the one being discussed or tested.
- Review practical fit. Check current price, ease of use, compatibility with your apps and devices, available support, and any family or parental-control features you need.
- Use recent evidence in context. Test versions and product features can change. Look for recent reports that cover your platform and the kind of protection you need rather than relying on a single score.
Run Microsoft Defender Offline on Windows
For a Windows PC with a suspected persistent infection, use Windows Security to start an offline scan. Save open work first: the scan requires a restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, choose Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then choose Scan now.
- Save your work and allow the PC to restart and complete the scan.
Microsoft documents this offline scan as using the latest definitions and running after restart. If the device still behaves as though it is infected afterward, do not assume the scan proves it is clean; seek current, device-specific support. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance describes the feature.
